Captain's Log,
I pulled some strings to get the crew some much needed time off. It seems like since our first encounter with The Liberation we've been running non-stop with no time to rest. While it was good to be home on Earth again, it seems the work of a Captain doesn't stop when the ship does. In our time here my newest Executive Officer was transferred off the ship without a word to me until after it was already done. To my knowledge her replacement has not been decided on yet, so it looks like I'll be leading our next mission alone. The Athena was called to assist at an archaeological dig site in Beta Hydri. The initial survey team seems to have discovered a massive structure just underneath the surface of a planet that up until recently was completely uninhabitable. Our ETA is under an hour.
End Log

The doors to the Ready Room swished open to reveal Carter standing in its' frame. His eyes quickly glided over his bridge crew to make a mental note of who was there and who was absent. A strange silence seemed to fill the bridge as he took his first steps into it. "Mrs. Brighton." He called to make sure he had her attention. "As you may be aware, the Athena is currently without a first officer. Until Command chooses a replacement for Trilarck I'd like you to step in to the role. I'll need you to pull double duties until this mission has run its' course." He continued dryly as he turned to face the viewscreen. "Now, on the topic of the mission, I'm going to want at minimum one person from every department present for the away team. No more than a skeleton crew to keep the ship in orbit should be necessary here. As soon as we've arrived I want to mobilize. We'll be taking a shuttle down due to harsh environments on the planet itself. And tell Morgaine that we'll need her down there too. I don't want anyone dying of dehydration." As James finished he brought his arms to cross against his chest and a small satisfied grin appeared on his face. "Any questions?"

As the doors opened, Susan saw the captain standing in the doorway. "Attention on deck! Captain Carter has arrived!" she said as she stood at attention and saluted the Captain. After he entered the room, she lowered her salute and stayed at attention. "Now, on the topic of the mission, I'm going to want at minimum one person from every department present for the away team. No more than a skeleton crew to keep the ship in orbit should be necessary here. As soon as we've arrived I want to mobilize. I don't want anyone dying of dehydration." she heard the Captain say, as she watched the others around them with great detail.

After being recently recruited to the Athena, Susan was eager to get started as a Security and Tactical Officer, even though she was just a Cadet fresh out of the Academy. She didn't want to screw up too badly on her first job, let alone a mission right off the bat. She waited for a few more minutes before volunteering herself on behalf of the security team. "Any questions?" Captain Carter asked. "Captain Carter, sir. I know I am just a Cadet, but you may need extra security on the ground. We don't really know what or who is down there, sir." Susan said as she stepped forward and waited for acknowledgement.

Suzie was manning Ops when the Captain entered and made his announcement. She was stunned at the sudden transfer of the acid-tonged former Counsellor. 'Unless.' She supposed. 'It was another one of those things that happen when you have powerful parents.'

When he announced there was to be an away team she was prepared to step up as always because the COO, if he was even on board, never went on away missions And none of the others were experienced enough. Then she remembered there was a new addition to the Ops team, she decided to clarify if both were wanted on the away team. She decided to speak up.

"Captain, we have a new Ops officer on board and I was wondering if you want both of us to accompany the away team or of you would prefer one of us to remain on the ship?" She asked.

The COS had been on shift for the last couple of hours after spending some time with the twins and settling them with their sitter as well as catching up on paperwork and more importantly making changes to the shift rotation. As much as she had enjoyed shore leave on Earth with her husband and children and introducing Elise and Aleksander to her parents, grandmother and Makayla, Katheryn was glad to get back into their usual routine and return to work with a renewed vigour and appreciation for life aboard the Athena.

The memory of their last mission was still fresh on her mind as had the several crew changes that had occurred before they had set out on this mission. Everyone would be missed in their own way and yet as with any change it also brought new people aboard who of course were welcomed warmly to the Athena family.

The mission itself sounded interesting and no doubt would bring its own mysteries to solve and she was looking forward to visiting the archaeological site. However when the doors to the Ready Room opened and Captain Carter stepped out, her attention was firmly on her CO as he called out to her.

Listening as he explained that he wanted her to be his Acting XO until Command chose a replacement for Commander Trilarck who she knew had left the ship suddenly and was honoured to step into the role and pull double duties for the duration of the mission. Career advancement was something she had discussed at length with Caleb and should this role be made permanent she knew that she would have his full support but if not then she would fully support whoever Command chose.

" Thank you Captain and of course " she replied before he continued and spoke about their mission in more detail. Listening to what was said, she understood what was required and couldn't help but smile at the mention of Ash and not wanting anyone to die of dehydration.

However before she answered her newest recruit Cadet Markington spoke up and addressed the Captain, now she hadn't had much time to speak with Markington yet but admired her enthusiasm and initiative. She also had a good point and when Lieutenant Venator spoke next, Katheryn waited then answered Carter.

" Understood Captain, I'll make sure Miss Morgaine is informed as I don't think Medical would want that either and I'll have the shuttle prepped" she said " Also Cadet Markington does have a good point and if you agree, I can have a small team put together".

Academy Commandant

Ruth Sigurdsdottir

[Bridge]

Ruth, while she didn't feel 100% back to normal quite yet was still perfectly well enough to be performing her duty. The recent down time had helped a lot. Naturally, she had insisted on the doctor having her down for regular checks, and being the good doctor that he was (she'd forgiven him for not getting Jules to her, after all, Jules was also employed by the Federation and had a job to do, if she really wasn't going to die, and here she was living proof that she wasn't... at least not immediately!, then she wasn't going to split hairs about if it was ethical lying to a patient ... he, the doc or someone in his team, had sent the message that she was going into surgery to have the tumour removed, even if Jules wasn't somehow miraculously at her bedside when she woke up.) he'd said that it was a good idea anyhow.

Still she was enjoying a day free from the splitting headaches she'd been having, in fact the only thing aching was her knee, and that was only cuz she'd pulled her seat in and bashed it against the underside of the terminal workstation... it would bruise but the pain would fade.

Susan said as she stepped forward and waited for acknowledgement.

Ruth didn't know the new security girl but Cadet Mornington was a regular eager beaver.  She blinked at the girl and wondered if she had ever been that enthusiastic.  'No, ' she thought to herself, '... I just made off with a spaceship with the Captain and an Admiral in tow... and now I'm a cynical bitch that's been there seen it done it.  Still let the girl work out life for herself, Ruth, she'll soon not be quite so squeaky new, no need to tarnish the enthusiasm just yet! The shiny on her will wear off soon!'

She exchanged a smile with Katheryn and a nod in the direction of the new cadet as if to say 'This one is full of beans!' but it was a kind smile.  It was always good to have the reminder that once upon a time they were all cadets and while they all had pride and enthusiasm to do well for James, the ship and the Federation, we could all do with some of the young woman's energy without the use of KDF Morning Special strength Ratkajinos.  Enough caffeine to make even William Quentin Waring wince.  Ruth chuckled at that thought.

She also winked at the other Susan on the Bridge, her friend Suzie.  It was a good job that they went by Suzie or rank when on duty, because the names could be confusing.

"Sir, I'm willing to go on the away team unless it is more prudent to have me here, in which case I nominate Ensign Baxter."

Ruth had a bit think to herself who they'd make First Officer.  Or more accurately second.  It was likely that Katheryn would take the position permanently unless they sent someone from somewhere off ship and she didn't really think that was going to happen when they had perfectly good officers to recruit from within, far easier to get a few Cadets or Ensigns that could see how their merry band worked.

'So who does that put in the running for Second Officer?'  she mused to herself. 'On rank and experience alone there was herself, who had been a First Officer under Julia Rellek... she wasn't sure if she was ready for it with the medical stuff lately though, Suzie... who was in her, possibly biased opinion, perfectly capable, Caleb who was probably happier doctoring and unlikely they'd have both Brightons on the command, Savar... what rank was he now anyhow??... but he'd been around forever... '  Still it was just musings.

"I'm pulling everything I know about the geological make up of the planet prior to this dig finding things, Captain, thus far there's not much other than the basics."

Caleb Brighton

[ Medical Bay ]

Caleb hummed himself as he was preparing for a shift. The time off was much needed. Being alone with the twins and his wife was refreshing. He also got to let the twins meet Makayla. He was glad that the two were able to sleep at night.

Being a father changed a lot of his thinking. He couldn't help but wonder how his own father felt holding him. Had he had the same worries as him? He knew a lot about his father, but after the realization of his partial Vulcan heritage, he called into question a lot of his past. He found out a bit from the calls with his uncle, but there was still a lot he didn't know. He knew at his current status on the ship, he wasn't privy to a lot of information. The death of his parents still boggles him and since it was classified information he was left wondering a lot.

Caleb clapped his hands together and made a whistle. "Alright everyone time for our daily powwow," He said. He smiled as his staff settled in. "we have some new faces joining us. First let's welcome Doctor CJ Dawson. You may have seen her around, but this is her official welcome. I would also like to welcome Molly Baker as well. She is studying to become a Doctor herself and I graciously accepted her into our ranks so she can get the practical time she needs to finish her studies. " As he said this he motioned to CJ as well as a tall blond woman who stood with the group. Molly was very much welcomed and he accepted her as a favor to his close friend Jenna. "I know we have all already given introductions, but this was just a formal welcome for both ladies. Ok so today is just like any normal day. Take care of any bumps and bruises. No surgeries are scheduled today, just physicals. Other than that you are free to go."

As the Cadet addressed Carter his gaze shifted to Brighton a moment. A small grin appeared on the corner of his lips before he quickly pivoted to face the Cadet. "Formalities aren't really my specialty Cadet." He began in a kind tone. "Brighton." He continued, now slightly more stern. He allowed the air to settle around him before he continued. Swiftly he turned back to the center of the bridge to speak to the rest of his crew. "Sigurdsdottir I want you and a small science team to work closely with engineering on the dig. Doran will be working directly with you. I want a full medical team down there, and Venator you'll be the liason between the teams, myself, and Mrs. Brighton. Dr. Brighton can choose his ground team." He paused as his mind tried to glide over anyone he might have missed. "Dihsar will pilot the Zeus down to the dig site with the primary teams as well as Mrs. Brighton. The Cadet, myself, and the newest addition to our medical staff will be taking the Redtail to make contact with the survey team at their outpost before we meet up with the rest of you." It was as simple a plan as they came for the Athena. Plus, James enjoyed getting to know his new blood.

Selden Perren Mestral

Mestral stood on the bridge, awaiting their first command. They tapped their foot on the floor, keeping the beat of a tune they had once heard in an effort to keep their mind occupied. I wonder if I'll need to calibrate the equipment before I get to work on this project. they thought, letting their eyes scan the other members of the bridge. They glanced over at the human security officer standing near them, wondering how much time members of different departments spent together on the ship.

As James finished he brought his arms to cross against his chest and a small satisfied grin appeared on his face. "Any questions?"

Mestral abruptly turned and saluted the captain, doing their best to hide their surprise. Listening to the captain, they realized that any prep work required of them would need to be done quickly. After the captain had spoken and the woman next to them had replied, Mestral nodded and stood at attention. "Captain, as a new member of the scientific department, I believe it would be beneficial to start working with the information available about this structure as soon as is possible. I can report to either the lab or the shuttle to prepare for my work at your discretion, sir" they said curtly, forgetting to blink in their anxiousness.
Curiosity killed the cat, satisfaction brought him back.

Ashlynn Ren Morgaine

[Mess Hall]

Ash hummed to herself as she worked on cutting the strawberries in front of her into bite-sized squares. In spite of their close call with the Liberation at the Academy - and the subsequent dead ends of any leads they had uncovered - the shore leave seemed to have lifted the Mess Hall Manager's spirits substantially... Or perhaps that was more a result of the sudden, unexplained departure of the Athena's previous XO. As short a time as the two of them had known each other, Trilarck had quickly earned the title of one of the most unpleasant people Ash knew - and as someone who had interacted with an adolescent Borg Queen, that was saying something.

Perhaps the two of them would have learned to get along with time, or, even more unlikely, perhaps they would have one day developed their own form of friendship - but Ash wouldn't miss her. Although a part of her whispered that she was a terrible person for being so excited over someone's departure, the Mess Hall Manager was still happily baking a small celebratory feast to start of their next mission.

Turning around to face one of the dry storage shelves, Ash opened her mouth and allowed her humming to progress into soft singing as she searched for some confectioner's sugar. Her voice wasn't the prettiest, but she obviously knew the song well, hitting all of the notes with relative ease. When the sugar wasn't immediately visible, however, the song paused, replaced by soft muttering as Ash rearranged the shelves. The Athena had restocked at Earth, so the shelves and storage were all newly full... But now she didn't know where anything was. Spotting a familiar light blue label, Ash leaned forward, perching on the tips of her toes as she reached for a canister on the top shelf.

"Come... On..." She muttered, hopping with each word as she tried to snag the sugar. When all she succeeded in doing was nudging the canister further back, she crossed her arms and huffed in annoyance. This was the last time she let other people stock her kitchen. From what she could tell, Starfleet seemed to have an overabundance of freakishly tall people stocking ships.

Katheryn responded to Markington's thank you before she saw the Captain's grin and acknowledged it as  he then turned to address Cadet Markington in a kind tone regarding the formality that she had used. Then when he became a little more stern and spoke to Katheryn directly, the COS understood exactly what he meant and why the order had been given. She agreed that this experience would be good for her latest recruit and quickly replied.

" Yes Captain and understood " she replied as the Captain's grin returned and he spoke to Markington once more. She saw the " I'm sorry look " that the Cadet gave her and she nodded in response although could quite clearly see the relief over not being reprimanded. Being new aboard a ship was indeed a massive learning curve but she was sure that Markington would fit in well and that this mission would also allow Katheryn to see how she worked.

As the Captain then addressed those on the Bridge and issued orders as to who he wanted to include and what he wanted them to do, Katheryn listened and began to mentally prepare for what had been asked and for the upcoming mission. She knew what she needed to do and once the newest Science Officer had spoken acknowledged Carter.

" Understood Captain, I'll contact Engineering and Medical as well as Miss Morgaine" she said " I'll also have the Redtail prepped along with the Zeus".

With that Katheryn turned to her console and began contacting who she needed too.

=/\= Commander Brighton to Flight Control, we need both the Redtail and Zeus prepped immediately as we'll be departing from the ship once we arrive at Beta Hydri =/\=

It wasn't long before her order was acknowledged by Ensign Lawson, then Katheryn contacted Engineering and Medical.

=/\= Commander Brighton to Chief Bash and Doctor Brighton, you've both been chosen to join the away mission to Beta Hydri, please prepare small ground teams, then report when ready to the Zeus =/\=

Katheryn then opened another channel to speak to Ash.

=/\= Commander Brighton to Ash, we would like you to join us on the away mission to Beta Hydri and will need to stay hydrated, please report to the Zeus once you're ready =/\=

The COS then waited for their response.

"You have a Cadet that needs to learn how the crew operates. It's a good thing a seat just opened up on the away team." He paused a moment to make sure the order was understood.

The sheepish grin from before reappeared on his face as Carter began to address the Cadet once more, his tone lightened once again. "I like your enthusiasm. Don't let go of that." Swiftly he turned back to the center of the bridge to speak to the rest of his crew.

Suzie gave a nod.

"Aye Captain." She replied, wondering exactly why a liaison was needed.

Calling for relief, she did a quick handover before standing up. She then gave a nod to Ruth before waiting on Kat. It would be better if they headed down together.

"Acknowledged Captain!" she'd heard a lot about this Spots Dorran from her friend Hrafn Falleg... apparently he'd managed to teach her some engineering, well Ruth herself wasn't totally useless with engines of the old Terran flying machines and automobile type... perhaps they might share some common ground.

Ruth hadn't noticed the quiet girl with the Vulcanoid features standing on the Bridge, then again, she hadn't made herself known to her department head, Ruth herself.

Ruth had known that she was getting a new person in the department but as yet hadn't seen hide nor hair of them.

"Oh Hello, you must be..." Ruth wrestled with her brain..."Mestrel?  is that right?  Sorry I had surgery recently and I wasn't around to welcome you personally... Lt. Ruth Sigurdsdottir, CSO." She inclined her head rather than shaking hands in the Vulcan manner of greeting.

"Unless the Captain says otherwise you'll work with me, I understand you want to get going but I believe we're all going down in the Zeus. Though you could potentially go with the Redtail and get cracking straight away... Captain?"

Ruth smiled in the knowledge that both Bash and Ash would be joining them.  The three of them always worked well together, she was becoming increasingly friendly with Ash who had one hell of a brain on her, and her Jules... well...

Calling for relief, she did a quick handover before standing up. She then gave a nod to Ruth before waiting on Kat. It would be better if they headed down together.

She handed off to the Ensign sat at Science 2, stood, and nodded back to Suzie as if to say 'Let's get the show on the road.'

"Mestrel, run down to Sciences, get yourself a Science tricorder and could you pick up the canvas shoulder bag in my office, the door is open.  Don't worry it's just some archaeological tools and my personal PADD, it has a few bits on there that might be useful for cross referencing materials and such.  Meet us at the Zeus.  Thank you."

Turning to Katheryn she smiled "Are we to be armed for this or are we just relying on you and Ms Markington to kill any baddies?!" she grinned, knowing that Katheryn knew that both she and Suzie at least were more than adept at using most weapons carried on the ship, and quite a few other things like a Bat'leth and throwing axes in Ruth's case, and unarmed or oriental combat methods for both of them.  They were more well equipped than most away teams in terms of ferocity in combat, but their secret weapon was that people like Ruth, Suzie and Ash looked sweet and innocent... and were far from it!

As Susan handed over her console and stood as if waiting for her and Ruth, Katheryn figured that it didn't matter where she was when the others responded and she could get a head start with ensuring the Zeus was prepared. However before she had Ensign Baker take over Sec/Tac, the COS acknowledged Ruth when she turned to the COS and smiled before asking if they were to be armed or rely on her and Markington to stop the baddies.

Katheryn grinned at the last part before she replied.

" We shouldn't need to be armed given the brief for the mission and I'm sure myself and Cadet Markington can easily stop any baddies that may come our way, however I think for safety's sake, we should take some with us and keep them stored in the Zeus should they be needed" she replied thinking it was better to be safe than sorry even if they didn't have a use for them.

Turning to Captain Carter " The others have been notified Captain and if there's nothing else, I'll head to the Shuttlebay and get everything prepared".

[ Medical Bay ]

Coming aboard this vessel was a big thing for her. Both her mom and dad were very proud of her. Especially her dad because he served on a fleet himself. The first few days she arrived here were already hectic and CJ already saw a brain surgery from up close. This was exactly the way she imagined it would be and she couldn't wait on much more to come.

Today she needed to report to Medical bay again and was happy to do so. On her way to the bay she greeted the people who passed by with a big smile. CJ walked into the medical bay and signed herself in. The moment she done that she saw and heard Doctor Brighton clapped his hands and they all gather round. It was her official welcome and that felt quite good. When Doctor Brighton mentioned her she nodded to the rest of the crew. Also another new face was introduced and CJ saw this woman for the first time. A tall, blond woman was standing in front of her and CJ smiled at her to make her feel more welcome. Another normal day in the Medical bay and her first job was doing a physical check-up on a crewmember.

Ofcourse it wasn't for her to hear this but she couldn't help but eavesdrop. CJ was standing with her back to Doctor Brighton. In front of her was her patient she was doing a check-up on. They needed a crew back on Beta Hydri and she was so hoping she could join. "So, Doc, am I OK?" Ensign Jackson asked her. "Oh sorry Jackson. I see nothing, you are perfectly healthy and good to go," She smiled and Ensign Jackson smiled back at her. "Good Doc, I will go back to duty then," He said and jumped of the bed. "Have a good one," CJ said to him and turned towards Doctor Brighton. To be honest, she wasn't really that type of girl to ask if she could join his team. If she didn't ask maybe he didn't take her. "Doctor Brighton... I am sorry but I overheard what commander Brighton said to you over the console. I-I-I don't want to be rude but... I know I am new and it's maybe a lot to ask. And I can accept it if you say no sir but... Can I join you on the away team to Beta Hydri?" CJ rambled but it made her quite nervous to ask him.
