Early Life
Malik was born on the Federation paradise planet of Risa, in 2372 a younger sibling to his sister Taja, one year prior to the outbreak of the Dominion War. Malik enjoyed a fulfilling and prosperous youth in the Federation's subsequent resurgence following the long drawn out war, and Risa in particular saw an increase in tourism following the end of hostilities. His parents were staunch advocates of the Federation and its ideals, and although they did not serve in Starfleet they aided the Risan government in providing support and rehabilitation to the returning wounded and traumatised of the war. Malik's father operates an independent business that offers pleasure cruises to some of Risa's tourist hotspots and less well known, secluded areas. Operating the latest in atmospheric/submersible pleasure craft, the business (Grippen Excursions) has been a source of income and pride for the family for many years.

Malik learned how to operate the pleasure craft before he could string a sentence together, under his father's tutelage he would often join him on the tourist excursions of wealthy businessmen and private sight-seers, as they skimmed along the surface and underwater of Risa. Malik's mother held an influential position in Risa's department for conservation and felt personally responsible for ensuring the marine wildlife or Risa remained undisturbed and protected from the increasing tide of tourists. This would often lead to some heated arguments between Malik's parents, particularly when Leif wished to visit particularly sensitive wildlife areas.

Teenage Years
Malik continued to work in the family business doing what he loved, flying in Risa's crystal azure skies. A natural pilot, Malik's excursions grew to become a firm favourite of Risa's visiting masses as he would offer both thrills and rarely seen sights. Malik and his father, often accompanied by their sister and mother enjoyed an idyllic life where nothing much ever seemed to go wrong. His sister Taja who shared her mother's inquisitive nature, decided to see the universe and apply to Starfleet Academy. Malik who was still too young to join, would follow his sister's progress through her training with great interest. When his sister graduated and was posted into the fleet, Malik would spend hours thinking of her and all the amazing things Starfleet afforded her to do.

Starfleet
The minimum enrollment age came and went, for two years Malik was indecisive as to whether to join his sister in the stars or remain on Risa and continue his work in the family business. It was his father who eventually persuaded him to enrol, for as much as Risa is a paradise the universe held many more wonders as yet undiscovered. That and the prospect of piloting a starship convinced Malik to enrol and pursue a career in the school of flight control.

Malik found life in the academy difficult at first, although Earth was considered near to perfection he sorely missed his paradise home of Risa. More than a few times did Malik consider leaving, but spurred on by his parents and sister's encouragement, and finding solace in the other Risian cadets he continued with his studies. He would eventually grow to love the academy and form many firm friendships that lasted throughout his time there. Piloting starships came naturally to him and he grew to love it. Now with his graduation completed, Malik at the relatively older age of 24 was ready to explore the universe.

Personality
Malik has a sunny disposition and projects an optimistic image of professionalism and jovialness that aids him in making friends and going about his work. If the situation calls for it, he'll try to brighten the situation. Malik's an ambitious and conscientious young pilot officer, dedicated to ensuring the vessel he's piloting gets from A to B in the best way possible.

Malik plunged the nose of the small craft down through the fluffy white clouds of Risa. The passengers held on tightly, the ship's inertial dampeners purposefully reduced for a thrilling ride. Down they went, their rate of descent ever increasing. The vast ocean spread out before them as they stared out of the near invisible forward structure. "Shouldn't we be slowing down? Maybe??" came the call of one particularly worried looking ferengi as he gripped his seat nervously. Mailk chuckled, "You didn't pay for a slow jaunt around the crystal cove, you're with Grippen Excursions, slowing down isn't part of our business model!"

The craft thundered towards the azure water with Mailk's steady hand on the controls, the passengers closed their eyes and screamed as they impacted. Fully expecting to be thrown forward and out of the cockpit, the nervous passengers were pleasantly surprised to find the craft had slipped into the water with the grace of a marine animal. Under the waves was just as if not more beautiful than the surface world with a plethora of rainbow coloured coral and ocean life. The craft ducked and weaved under great coral archways along the white sandy ocean floor and Malik pointed out particularly things of interest following his father's style of presentation and engagement.

After an hour the craft resurfaced and skimmed along the surface of the water back towards the dock. The passengers all bore smiles and talked excitedly amongst themselves at their experience. Another successful voyage, thought Malik.
