Character Bio:

Buck Harlan McNair, born the eldest child to Helen and Austin McNair on the 15 October 2370 in Arlington, Texas. Both of them having met on ship when Helen McNair boarded as a temporarily assigned JAG officer on one USS Saragossa and for years they had remained in contact before they finally admitted they had feelings for one another and eloped. Their individual lives making it difficult for them to maintain their relationship but their first child had seemed to be the glue which had been needed to bond them together.

Helen returned to her home in Arlington, where she spent maternity leave making sure that Buck was healthy and safe with the babysitter as she cut her leave short by three months to assist.

Perhaps by the birth of his third brother, it seemed that his fate to join Starfleet had been more or less sealed as he progressed through school and his chosen pathway to join up as Starfleet personnel; initially as an enlisted member but such the way of life had opened the door to the Academy. Whilst his brother, Trent, would later be quick to pick up the Sciences as a track he wanted to pursue - Buck wanted to see and explore what had been out there first.

He knew his strengths and he knew his weaknesses as a person and in academic life; though he hadn't appreciated exactly how difficult it would have been to pass the initial sift of applications for Starfleet officer training. Buck had been eighteen when they had turned him away, initially expressing concern over how little he had experienced life despite his parents having served Starfleet through and through. There were no shortcuts in life, one of the first lessons that he had learned as he turned to his hometown in Arlington, and started his life as a Texas Ranger.

Buck had thoroughly enjoyed the time that he had spent in the Rangers; having learned and developed several crucial life skills and lessons - he had looked back towards attempting the Academy again once Trent had contacted him saying that he had been assigned to a ship. He had heard of the wars that Starfleet were engaged in, how difficult it had been to make sure that his father was safe (as his mother had been on maternity leave once more with their fourth child, and only sister, Wynn) and that his worry over his brother and his health seemed to grip him from time to time as he eventually made it through the gates of the Academy to start his training to become an officer.

Be it what it may, his time at the Academy had not come without its problems, especially as an older member and a son of two Starfleet officers. His rough and tumble background clashed with fellow classmates at times, reports of him getting into a fight during his third year nearly jeopardized his career before it had started but the report had failed to mention that he had only engaged after the other party had been caught in a bigger infraction afterwards and was let off with a warning not to engage the next time.

2388 - First attempt to join Starfleet Academy, failed

Buck hefted his bag over his shoulder, squinting as he watched the craft which had dropped him off fly off into the distance. Probably to pick up another fare or someone with a lot more to say about their time at the Academy. Granted, he was a year away from finishing and they had been broken up for a break so that they could go back and see their families; if they had families to go back to. The dust had settled and Buck started to walk up the winding road which would take him to their home; an old converted ranch which had been passed down from generation of McNair to the next.

Barely even arriving at the door, he could hear the excited yips from Beethoven, a dog he had adopted one year as their family pet. Though Beethoven was officially Buck's dog, it stayed living with AJ and Wynn for the time he spent away. A crooked smile crossed his lips as he could see Wynn approaching the door, opening it and laughing as Beethoven rushed out to him. "Hey buddy, how's it? You been protecting the house? Good boy." He ruffled his dog's head, trying to find a way around the large dog as he moved towards the house and finally entering out of the heat.

Wynn unfolded her arms, trying to look serious, "Been a while."

"I know, missed your birthday by a couple of days, I'm sorry, Winnie. You gonna get all mad with me now? Especially when I did get you a lil something on the way in--"

He had been quickly cut off by the sudden shift, Wynn latching herself around her big brother. "Missed you too." He chuckled as he settled into the hug. She had grown since the last time he had seen her, even if they did have a chance to speak over the communicators almost every week if he had the chance to.

"You just missed mom, she deployed out last night but she did leave you something because I told her you were getting back home today before she had left. Dad - same detail. You know the gig, right. Don't need to be telling you all this."

Beethoven barked, nudging the back of Buck's leg as he went to scratch him behind the ears. "Still good to be kept in the loop, which ship they get posted to?"

"Mom's Paladin and Dad is on....USS Endeavor? I think that's what he said. Anyway, we got time to catch up - I'll go get you a cold one. Betcha missed that."

Excellent application. As a returning member, there is no need for an Academy Training Course. Question is, which SIMM do you want to join Challenger, Discovery, or Katra?

Buck McNair

Many thanks!

I'd like to join the Challenger please :)
