General/Personality Overview
Lex is single-minded in her pursuit of what she wants. Dogged in her ambition, she is intelligent, but it was undoubtedly her focus that propelled her to succeed at the Academy and beyond. She likes to consider herself as being without undue preoccupation for issues of morality, and while not completely unprincipled, will do almost anything in order to see a task completed to her satisfaction.

She does not trust easily, and can appear quite aloof. She is cunning and not above manipulation to get her way, though she feels uncomfortable around those who appear to have received a more well-rounded, stable education than she. As a result, Lex has developed a bit of an inferiority complex when it comes to many of her superior officers. She has a rebellious streak, but rather than refuse to follow orders, she will sometimes try to find ways to circumvent them to suit her own agenda.

Lex is not without a temper, but she is not one to show it. Any ill mood will likely be hidden behind a blank expression or, on occasion, depending on her environment, a sneer. She can come across as youthful and innocent to some and she uses this to her advantage often. She has a penchant for all things that glitter and sparkle, most especially if they do not belong to her.

Fortunately for her peers, Lex isn't without charm. She is quick-witted, sharp of tongue and tells a decent story. Once her trust is won she will become a friend for life, though those can be counted on one hand. She needs no excuse to let her hair down or relax, provided there's nothing more important to be done.

Strengths & Weaknesses
+ Cunning
+ Resourceful
+ Light-fingered
- Shiny things

Hobbies & Interests
Lex likes a good fight, be that via the medium of words or fists, though she'd prefer to vent her frustrations physically. She loves watching boxing, legitimate bouts or not, it doesn't matter to her. She has quite a few bad vices and she is usually open about them. She has a keen interest in astrophysics in general, as well as a habit of tinkering with things that she is unable to reassemble. She's obsessed with the history of piracy and the origin of the practice, and she likes naps. She was raised mostly on hermetically sealed rations but instead of being fussy she's found instead that she wants to try everything.

Personal History
Born to Daniel and Jun Costa, merchant traders operating out of capital city Cochrane of the Proxima colony, Alexa Costa had something of an unstable early childhood. Due to the nature of the fledgling business enterprise during that period, the Costas' visits to established colonies were short, and young Alexa's upbringing lacked any sense of permanency or security.

When Alexa was thirteen, Jun was diagnosed with Iverson's Disease and returned to Cochrane for treatment and respite. The disease, having gone undiagnosed and ignored for years, had unfortunately already begun to cause extensive damage to her motor skills and kidney and lung function. She took her own life two years following her relocation to Cochrane.

During this time, Daniel had kept Alexa with him, needing the help and recognising the young teenager's potential, but also, in his own very misguided way, protecting her from having to witness much of her mother's illness. Thus, when Jun passed, Alexa was not at all equipped to deal with it. It was at this stage of her young life that Alice, Daniel's mother and Alexa's grandmother, decided to make her influence known.

Alice insisted that Alexa return to Proxima and receive some consistent schooling; the type of education that Daniel Costa had neglected to provide for his daughter. Of course Daniel resisted; insisting that Alexa learn the family trade. The teenager already had a decent engineering knowledge of their flagship freighter, the Presto, as well as a mind for organisation and negotiation. But Alexa was already beginning to outgrow what living on the freighter could offer her. The same route, the same stars, the same destinations and the same boys looking for her attention. She wanted to know what was beyond the Presto's limited scope.

And so the now young woman made the decision for herself, and the responsibility for raising Alexa fell to her grandmother for a time. With Alice's encouragement, and to her father's fury, Alexa threw herself into her studies and eventually moved to Earth to attend Starfleet Academy. Those years would prove to be easy in comparison to the career that followed. Federation life and service soon became an unexpected challenge for the spacer.

[USS Kildara - Captain's Ready Room]

Lex had decided that she wasn't a fan of Captain Bronski's mustache.

"Well your references are stellar, Costa, but your results are decidedly mid-table average."

Her expression was totally blank as she looked at old Bronski, offering nothing but a submissive nod as he continued speaking and she went back to studying his obscene facial hair. It was really bushy. And while it looked like almost every strand had been carefully separated and brushed and placed so very precisely, there was one grey hair that was pointing in the opposite direction to the others. She wanted to reach out and pull it viciously out of its follicle. Lex knew that when Bronski caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror, he'd be upset that his once perfectly groomed 'tache was rebelling against his will.

In truth, she was examining the older man's face so intently as a means to distract from the jade paperweight on his desk. As he read from the PADD Bronski would unknowingly pluck the eye-catching ornament from the surface, roll it around one-handed in his palm, then replace it in the very same place. A tic, she thought, though strange that the man would use such a solid thing in lieu of a soft, malleable stress ball.

You should take it.

"... much stead in examination results, really. Instead I'd like to know what it is you think you'd bring to this crew?"

Lex glanced up quickly from her study of the shiny, green thing, feeling a little bewildered at the prospect of having to interview for a position she believed she'd already been given. Nevertheless, she answered the useless flibbertigibbet.

"Well, sir, aside from my results, my profile also includes various recommendations and statements from previous instructors and lecturers. They all agree that my work ethic is second to none, and that I have formidable focus. Once I set my mind to a task sir, success is my only acceptable outcome."

Who has a paperweight these days, anyway? There was no paper in the Captain's ready room. A pointless gift. Those were Lex's favourites. The light glinted off one of the many softened corners of the shiny thing. A chiliagon, perhaps. Purchased as novelty by someone with either no appreciation for practicality, or someone that had stopped personalising their gifts. Mother in law? Lex's head shifted ever so slightly as she considered, watching the way the man handled the many-sided jade shape, and then the very ghost of a smile fluttered across her pursed mouth. Emotionally distant wife.

"That does indeed appear to be your greatest strength, Costa. But what would you say would be a weakness?"

Your chin.

Take the thing. Take it take it take it take it take it take it.

"I do sometimes find impulse control a tad challenging, sir." She smiled then, all earnest charm as she leaned forward and engaged with her new Captain. "My grandmother often says it's my generation's curse; this need for instant gratification instead of achieving goals through hard work and dedication." She shoved her hands in between her crossed thighs and continued, shoulders forward, body language open. "Her influence is what kept me going through the harder months at the Academy."

"A wise woman, your grandmother!" Captain Bronski had stood and was leaning over his desk, hand offered to her. Lex followed suit, and grasped it in a solid, sure grip, her other hand splayed upon the surface of his desk as though to balance her as she stood.

"That she is, sir."

"Welcome aboard the USS Kildara, Costa. I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do."

"Me too, sir, me too." With a dismissal from the Captain and a smile from the newly graduated officer, she left the ready room with a shiny green treasure up her sleeve.
