[Conference Room]

Ruth entered the Conference Room and looked around at the arrangements.  Lahr had done well.

She tried, and failed, not to smirk at Ian's comments.

"Three things Ian, and I'm being informal here as I'm speaking as a friend not your sub-ordinate.  And as someone who's been there.  One - the first one when it's on your head that the axe will fall is always the hardest... no pun intended there about the axe by the way.  It's fine being XO or a department head or whatever, but that's scary enough too first time around, when the buck stops at you... yeah it's terrifying.  Bringing me to Two - you're an awesome Captain, a brilliant negotiator, and I know you can do this and have every confidence in you.  Three - Nope, sorry!  Well you could but I don't think Kyle or I would thank you for resigning.  That said, if you need us, if you and Jess want to have time off together, we got you covered.  Likewise in this situation they start blindsiding you or starting a bloody war in here I'll have Lahr beam in those axes!"

She grinned.  "Relax, think of running with woad on your face in only a kilt and boots, sword in hand and yelling something unintelligible in Gaelic if they start being pains in the butt.  I did it but in Norse.  It helps!  Want a drink... I'll even turn a blind eye if that's a quick dram but I was thinking more a glass of water or a coffee!"

On hearing the leaders had beamed aboard she pulled her tunic straight in all directions.  "Time to fix on the perma smile..." she put on her best resting slight smile face.  "Will that do?  Too phoney?"

[Conference Room - USS Challenger]

Ian made a face at Ruth's praise as he remained skeptical about his chances of success in being a negotiator. Any response he might have had was interrupted by the arrival of the two Nelvar leaders. He put on his best smile and spoke in what he hoped was a pleasant tone.

"Welcome aboard the Challenger gentlemen, I hope your presence here is just the first step in a meaningful conversation."

"That is unlikely human. I'm only here to see if you are as big a fool as the other representatives of the Federation have been."

Primus Thebos spoke in a tone of withering contempt.

"Now you see the futility of speaking with a Trellion."

First One Greshak replied with dry amusement.

Ian winced internally and began to wonder if negotiations with the Space Nazis might be more enjoyable.

"Primus, the first stage of any useful interaction is an open mind. Your worlds have been at odds for decades and based on the current level of tension, I'm certain a war would not benefit either of your peoples. Please, in the interest of peace, let us talk as civilized sentients and find a way forward. One of Earth's greatest physicists once said 'the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results'." Please Sir, let's be willing to try something different today."

It was difficult to determine whether Ian's words amused or intrigued Thebos, but he relented and he gestured for Ian to continue. Ian indicated Ruth and added.

"Allow me to introduce my Chief Science Officer Ruth Sigurdsdottir. As part of our reason for being here is, once we've reached a negotiated peace, to discuss mining rights with your governments, she is here both to assist me in peace negotiations and then to determine the extent and quality of the dilithium in your asteroid belt. Please choose your seats and we can begin."

The two planetary leaders eyed each other suspiciously, but took their seats as Ruth and Ian did the same. Once seated, Ian began his pitch and hoped he wouldn't prove to be as big a fool as Thebos already thought he was.

"Morning Bluey, and 'Breakfast to Go' right behind you!" she said first returning the kiss and then handing him a muffin.  "Chocolate or Blueberry?  I figured would give us a few more minutes together if I picked you up here, ate on the go and well everyone on Alpha Shift knows about us and doesn't care so if we arrive up there together no-one will bat an eyelid!"

As she'd bent over her necklace slipped out of her tunic since the zip was still down a little.  She kissed it and popped it back, then did up the zip, looking deep into Lahr's eyes she smiled.

"I don't think you know how special that is do you?"

The choice of muffins perked his antenna. "Chocolate of course.  I wouldn't want to deny you something blue to eat." he remarked with an over abundance of innuendo.  Lahr just loved to tease Ruth.  It was a game Lahr had played for nearly a year and half with her as he jokingly denied how he truly felt.  Now that they were together and others knew... it was still just as fun.

He smiled at seeing her still wearing the necklace.  Part of him thought, that yeah most women would wear the gift the first week or two... but this was going of what?  week 3 or 4?   The fact that she was still wearing was pretty impressive.  He'd done good at picking out something that she would appreciate.

As they were walking out of the Observation Lounge she questioned if he knew how special it was.  He shook his head as he moved nearer to slide his arm behind her back and hold her by the waist as they walked. "I could hazard a guess... but I'd rather you tell me."

Ruth giggled at Lahr's promise to memorise the spatial co-ordinates.  "I'm going to hold you to that Mr. ch'Verret!" she said with a grin.  Seeing Kyle's grin she pulled a face at him and going past put out the tip of her tongue in mock rebellion.  "I'll get you later!" she said in her best 'little sister threatening big brother' way, and hip bumped him as she went past enough that he'd notice but Ian probably wouldn't.

Lahr grinned at Ruth and gave a nod. "Aye, ma'am.  I'll get on that right after I got the conference room set up.  I'll have each of your preferred drinks on hand for you.  Your non-alcoholic preferences I should say."

His antenna danced in amusement at the thought of Ian and Ruth sharing a fifth of scotch and getting tipsy while in the middle of the negotiations.

Lahr had received orders to configure the conference table so that Ian would sit in the center of the table with his back to the viewports and Ruth sitting across from him. The two leaders would sit at the ends of the table with the two sets of honor guards along the bulkheads.

With instructions provided on how to set up the room, Lahr followed them to the T.  Besides the table set up, Lahr had to make sure there were a selection of snack foods and beverages for all in case the meeting ran long.

Unfortunately, there were no Nelvarish foods in the replicator database so Lahr had to send his list of his best guesses foods and drinks down to medical to be sure that they would be edible.

On the drink list was the Captain's black chai and Ruth's raktajino, as well as sparkling water, orange juice, prune juice and Vulcan spice tea.   The food included an assortment of fruits, cheeses, grain crackers and sliced meats with three different sweets for a dessert tray.

=/\= "ch'Verret to Dr. Belmont. Hey, Doc can you have your medical teams double check all the food and drink items on the list are safe for both Nelvar species and get back to me ASAP.  Thanks." =/\=

The decor of the room was set as neutral as possible.  Lahr balanced not only the seating at the table but the position of the table as well making sure.

The familiar whine of a transporter completing it's cycle trailed off and the anthems of the two planets played in the perspective transporter rooms of the two Nelvar leaders. The honor guards snapped to attention as Greshak and Thebos stepped down off of the platforms to be greeted Wessex and T'Kel respectively.

Lahr, back at his station on the bridge was keeping watch on the two transporter rooms via the ships internal video system for the arrival of the two Nelvarish species.

"Both Nelvar delegations have been beamed aboard.  Honor Guard Team A and B are introducing themselves....  And now both are on the move."  Lahr announced to Kyle on the Bridge, before adjusting the camera views to the hallways outside the transporter room.

Since equalness in all things seemed to be the goal, Lahr hoped that by tracking both groups  he could assist in ensuring the same arrival time at the conference via different routes to opposite ends of the room.

=/\= "Lieutenants Wessex and T'Kel. You have both passed the first 1/3 of the route in perfect sync.  Just keep that pace." =/\=

With the Nelvar settled into the conference room with the Captain and Ruth and the Honor Guard, Lahr was reminded of the last time he's been ask to stand as Honor Guard to one side of opposing factions.   That day had not been a good one with him ending up having to help Lek diffuse a missile.  Lahr REALLY hoped this negotiation went better than that one.

Mondo looked down at the offered hand for a moment, having been rarely offered such a greeting by a superior officer.  Then he took the hand, shaking it gently.  He took note of the pronunciation of 'Lieutenant' as 'Leftenant', but he had long since known about the multitude of Earth accents and dialects due to the Captain's own unusual method of speaking.   "Pleasure to meet you, Sir."

Wessex had a bright and shining quality to his personality, and his smile was infectious.  The corners of Mondo's mouth even managed to quirk upwards very slightly.

Now Mondo handed the man a PADD.  "I have thus far prepped for the usual diplomatic arrangement: Type I hand phasers in concealed carry, dress uniforms, and a two-man reinforcement team armed with phaser rifles ready to beam in if serious trouble develops.  But you may wish to alter arrangements according to your experience and training."

Mondo did not mind it when officers made additions, subtractions, or other changes.  That was the point of an officer, after all.  They had several times the training, in a wide array of disciplines, and were expected to employ a holistic understanding of situations.

A short time later, the representatives of the warring governments had been beamed aboard, escorted to meet with the Captain by the 'honor guard' each had been allocated.  Mondo was but one member of the team for one of the planetary leaders, deployed according to Wessex' preference.

With the meeting now underway, there was little to do but to observe and hope that no escalation occurred, and the process of peace could unfold.

Surprised at the grace and decorum of the huge Petty Officer, Paul took his hand - which was immediately enveloped - and pumped it warmly. The moment was brief, as Nari was clearly a man of duty. He took the proffered PADD, and listened to the recommendations.

He nodded, scrolling through the suggestions. "This looks fine to me, Mr Nari" he agreed, honestly. He then looked up, his friendly smile turning earnest. "Until I find my feet, I will look to you for your experience and expertise for guidance in these matters." It was an old, well-understood and much-followed protocol: new officers, and perhaps even experienced ones, dismissed the input of the senior Enlisted at their peril - be it professional or literal. Petty Officers didn't get their justifying esteemed rank for not being superbly qualified and respected by their senior and peers, and Wessex was too new in these shallow shores to assume he knew everything enough to override the submission of an established member of this ship, and this Department. "I hope this will not prove to be embarrassing or uncomfortable for you; yet if this proves to be then, without prejudice or negative impact to your career, please bring to my attention and I will adjust accordingly."

He returned the PADD, with a nod. Despite his desire to be initially guided by Nari, he already very much appreciated and agreed with the submission - it was discreet, but flexible if the waters became...choppy. "Please select, in your expert opinion, the best available staff in the team for each of these roles - but I'd like you to consider yourself for the honour-guard." That was more than just an empty gesture or watery compliment: the Hupyrian was a formidable physical presence - or was that deterrent? - but his manner clearly excluded an aura of calm and solicitude that may prove to be a positive influence during the possibly fractious proceedings.

Oh. That's right. "I'll then submit, on your behalf and with my support, to Lieutenant T'Kel."

He was still too used to still being a Chief of Security; it was a change in authority he had to remind himself of swiftly, or he could find himself guilty of overstepping his authority.

Challenger - Conference Room>

There was a light feeling of dÁ©jÁ  vu as Wessex stood, with the two teams, as the delegates arrived in unison at the Conference Room. It had been a pleasurable experience to have the Bridge update the progress of the escort parties - it had made the co-ordination seamless and without accusations of bias. And now, standing - at rest - in the quiet corners of the room, observing the proceedings for signs of escalatory behaviour, it was a return to a role that spanned across the Federation: Naval Patrol and StarFleet did one thing in common...standing around, waiting for something to happen.

After two hours of negotiations, Ian couldn't remember having a more thunderous headache as neither Thebos or Grelak were interested in actually talking. All either wanted to do was air out grievances going back decades, if not centuries. Ian was surprised that neither of the two leaders had stormed out of the 'negotiations', so it was rather like watching an old fashioned train wreck. One feared to watch, but one could not turn away.

When Thebos came back around to some slight that occurred forty years ago and had been hashed to dead an hour ago, Ian had reached his limit. Had he been armed, he would have seriously considered stunning both men and throwing them in the brig in the same cell until they could figure out how to listen instead of just yelling. However, the Federation files on negotiations were quite clear about such a tactic and he chose instead to raise a hand to interrupt Grelak's current tirade.

"Gentlemen. I appreciate the time we've spent together. I believe we've cleared the air on multiple topics, but how about I suggest a neutral topic. The Nelvarish system boasts a lucrative commodity in the form of extensive dilithium crystals. I suggest that both parties return to their homes to talk to their governments and allow my science team to survey the deposits for quantity and quality of the crystals. If this is acceptable, we can meet again tomorrow at the same time to discuss the findings and use that as the basis for peace negotiations."

Grelak and Thebos both stared at each other with their typical unrelenting suspicion before they turned that unfriendly gaze on Ian. Keeping a beatific smile on his face, Ian waited for one of them to speak, and finally Thebos did.

"Acceptable."

"I can agree to that." Grelak added.

Ian sighed internally and stood.

"Thank you gentlemen. I will see you tomorrow."

Both leaders grunted in reply and the honor guards led them back to the two transporter rooms. As soon as the transporter chiefs reported they were off the ship, Ian pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed out loud for the first time as he spoke to Ruth.

"I believe that was the most agonizin' thing I've ever done. Okay, this a science show now. Coordinate with Flight and Ops to shuttle out, with both government's permission, ta get as good a survey as you can within a twelve hour limit. Stay on your toes Commander, because these people are lookin' for a reason ta start shootin' and I nae want ta be the one that gives them that. Dismissed."

Mondo had rarely been insulted by a superior.  He was not even sure it was in the capacity of Starfleet officers to be insulting.  Especially towards someone who had worked with Ferengi.  However, neither had all of his superiors been particularly complimentary or extended such gestures of honor.  It seemed likely that he would enjoy his service under Lieutenant Paul Wessex.

"It will be my honor to serve," he said, "and Thank you, Sir, for endorsing such a position."

The negotiations were long and circuitous, and Mondo could see that they were weathering the Captain's composure.  To his credit, he never broke.  The passions for which he was known did not consume him.  In the end, there was nothing for Security to do.

That was good.

When the issue of dilithium was raised, Mondo couldn't help but wonder if that was why Starfleet had taken an interest in these negotiations.  As much as the Federation liked to distinguish themselves from nations concerned with profit, he had noticed that they also sought the acquisition of resources and assets.  They merely approached such acquisitions with a velvet glove.

With the session finally ended, Mondo and the diplomatic protection detail proceeded to take the representatives back to the transporter rooms.

"For an initial negotiation between warring powers," Mondo opined once the final sparkle had faded, "I think that went very well."

His legs grateful for the opportunity to be in motion once more after, the protracted - if not exciting - discussions, Paul glanced at the Petty Officer, who's bass timbre echoed in the chamber. He nodded contemplatively at the observation. It was an usually drama-free arbitration. And yet, often danger wasn't from the gale, but of the undercurrent. Starfleet's turning me into a cynic, he thought to himself wryly. "Good job, all" he announced brightly instead, pushing the creeping incertitude from his voice. "Return arms to the lockers, and loop to your next regular duty assignment."

He, for his part, would head back to the Conference Room to sweep for any lingering devices.

Yes, definitely a cynic.

If they didn't, she hoped they didn't know the normal stereotypes regarding redheads very much played out with her.  Hurt her, her loved ones, her (as in those she served with) crew or just generally acted like complete numpties and got her back up and you found that out sharpish.

Dismissed."

Ruth let out a long breath that she hadn't realised she'd been holding, went over to the replicator and came back with two old fashioned Tylenol and a glass of water and handed them to Ian.

"You did great, but I'm with you on the headache.  I don't know if Lisa has Tylenol, but this always worked for me, and it's something we can self-medicate.  If we ran to her for every little thing, she'd never get a moment's peace. For the headache...Unless you want to pop down and see Dr. Fellows?!" she said with a wink.  "Let me get out of these and round up the usual suspects and we'll make the best we can of the 12-hour window. May I assume I can assemble pretty much any team I want?"

=/\=Commander Sigurdsdottir to Dr. Belmont, Lt. Litt, Lt. Morgan, Petty Officer ch'Verret and Lt. =/\=Please send one of your crew members at your discretion to head up the Science investigation, I leave it to you as to who you can spare as I trust each and every member of Challenger's crew.  Have them in Shuttlebay 1 in 5 mins as I want to head out as soon as I can.  While this is a Science gig, bring side arms as I don't trust either side of the Nelvar factions.  Mr ch'Verret even if you are selected for the away team I'd like you to inform both sides and indicate that the Mjolnir will be the one conducting the survey.  Sigurdsdottir out. =/\=

She waited until one of the Security crew came down and then said "You'll have had more recent experience than I about this I suspect and I respect your judgement...Is there any way we can load up on ordinance on the Mjolnir, like it's a normal thing and won't look like any kind of an aggressive act.  I don't want to give them any indication that we are trying to side with one or other of them or against both... "  she gave a wry smile.

"Sorry shouldn't lay it on you, but the negotiations this morning rather wiped me out and my brain is stuck in Science mode rather than Tactical!"

Conference Room - Challenger

Ruth fought hard, and for once won the battle against her eyebrows.  She already didn't like Thebos but she smiled slightly and inclined her head.  She did however, appreciate Ian's use of the quote by Einstein.

"As a Science Officer, I'm committed to facts, Sirs and that's all I'll be looking for..." she raised her shoulders in a slow shrug.  "Beyond that and a peaceful discussion, you can almost pretend I'm not here!" she highly doubted that a woman with bright auburn hair would exactly be inconspicuous but she was meaning to imply she was no threat if they played nice. If they didn't, she hoped they didn't know the normal stereotypes regarding redheads very much played out with her.  Hurt her, her loved ones, her (as in those she served with) crew or just generally acted like complete numpties and got her back up and you found that out sharpish.

Ruth let out a long breath that she hadn't realised she'd been holding, went over to the replicator and came back with two old fashioned Tylenol and a glass of water and handed them to Ian.

Ian took the proffered tablets despite never have heard of them, anything to muzzle the headache that threatened to split his skull. When Ruth asked about being able to compose her own team, he nodded wearily.

"As I said, this is a science show now. You take whoever you seem fit ta make the survey a success. You already know ta be on the look out for trouble. I'm goin' ta my ready room now and file a preliminary report ta Starfleet Command."

Ian exited the conference room, waved Kyle back into the center seat and plopped down behind his deck in the ready room. He leaned back and stretched vigorously before sighing and beginning his report.

Ruth grinned at the innuendo and giggled.  She loved it that Lahr hadn't changed a bit in that way, in fact the only way he'd changed was becoming more committed to her, bringing her thoughts neatly to the necklace.

"Well, the necklace.  It's on silver in a blue surround for the pendant, and it's a snowflake.  Right there it's my favourite colour metal, favourite colour anyhow and reminds me of home... both our homes.  Snowflakes are unique, and perfect, just like someone I could mention..." she pressed into his side as they walked along to give him a hint if he didn't realise.

"Course... I could just show you tonight and make you dinner then you could stay over?! How about lasagne?! For the first course anyhow. But for now..." they were right next to the turbolift that would take them up a deck.  "Will this do?!" she turned to face him, and left a searing kiss on his lips.

At being handed the chocolate chip muffin, Lahr took a large bite of it, while Ruth answered her own question as to why she viewed the necklace as special.  She listed all of the varied reasons that he'd picked it in the first place.  That she recognized them all, caused him to smile around the second bite of his muffin.

When she pressed to his side in hint of who that 'someone' was, Lahr tightened hold at her waist.  He thought about teasing her, joking about who this mystery man was that she thought was so perfect... but he wasn't quick enough in swallowing his last bite of the muffin before she turned the topic to her idea of 'showing' him how special she thought the necklace was.  The emphasis she gave the word 'showing' had the Andorian's mind envisioning all sorts of intimate things... but baked pasta in tomato sauce hadn't topped the list.  But he was adaptable.  "Sounds g..."

But his answer was cut off by her unexpectedly passionate kiss. Definitely adaptable.  Lahr continued the kiss, deepening it until the slide of the turbolift doors announced that their ride up to the Bridge was present.

The split screen images appeared on the viewer and Kyle watched as the delegates were led to the Conference Room. He couldn't put a finger on it but something gave him the feeling things wouldn't go too well. He did NOT envy Ian on this one.

Lahr continued his aiding until the two factions entered at the same time.  After which Lahr, closed the comms and video feeds.  He did a mandatory check of the ships various sensors before glancing over his shoulder towards Commander Briggs.

"Do we know what initially started the hostilities between the Nelvar?" he asked because nothing in the briefing he'd seen had any mention of it.

As he prepped the requested communication out to the two Nelvar planetary governments, he waited on pins and needles for a call from Lieutenant Morgan.  Would she call on him, as Ruth sort of hinted?  Or would their now officially open relationship mean that he would get sidelined and have to remain back on the ship?

Ruth's Mjolnir led a small flotilla of shuttles consisting of the Resnik, McNair, Jarvis, McAuliffe, and Onizuka out of the Challenger's shuttlebay and split up to cover as much of the field as they could within their limited time frame they had. It was immediately apparent that both the Loceans and the Trellians had extensive mining complexes serviced by multiple sublight transports operation within the field. Initial surveys found that the amount of extent of the dilithium was impressive. However, the quality was perhaps not the finest, but the volume was enough to make up for the quality.

Another fact that was immediately apparent was the extent of the laser defenses of the mining complexes. Fortunately, the coordination with the two governments kept those batteries silent, but their constant tracking remained unnerving.

Primus Thebos watched the feeds of the Federation shuttles moving through the asteroid field with intrest. Behind him, a tall Nelvari in the ostentatious uniform of the Supreme Commander of Trellion spoke with concern.

"This was a mistake."

"It was my mistake to make General Gathik."

"I don't question that Primus. I question allowing these interlopers free reign within our territory. We know their technology is superior to ours, they may find more than just dilithium."

"You were the one who told me personally that the new emplacements were undetectable."

Chastened, Gathik did not reply and simply joined Thebos in monitoring the progress of the survey team in silence.
