[Medical Lab?]

Jessica stood there, silent, with a complete poker face as she was verbally assaulted by the first officer.  She showed no sign of being affected by his words, as if she had been prepared for something like this.  When he was done, she pushed herself up and walked to one of the computer consoles, bringing up a screen that showed alien symbols and the Discovery itself, before the symbols flashed to different shapes until common tongue letters could be seen.

"Expendable... let's see.  Lieutenant Commander Ian Galloway, recently assigned First Officer.  Senior Chief Petty Officer Kali Reyes, Chief Operations Officer.  Lieutenant Junior Grade Inzjana.. Junior grade, really?  Chief Science Officer.  Interesting... looks like your Captain had just put in for promotions for two of you... whoops!  I think that was supposed to be a surprise." she said with a grin, turning to face the group.

"If you want to kill yourselves to save your Captain the trouble, be my guest.  But I'm calling your bluff.  Three of you represent half of the senior staff.  You might be ready to end your careers on the high note, but think about what it looks like to Starfleet.  The first time the Discovery was involved with me, your Captain was strung up for losing both a Federation outpost and his own ship.  What do you think will happen if he returns to Federation Space having lost his entire away team?  There are plenty of others who have already taken notice of him, I'm sure they would love an excuse to get rid of him.  To be honest, I thought after they sabotaged your ship, he would be done, but hey, looks like you have more friends than we thought."

The sweet tone began to drop, as Jessica began talking more harshly.  "Riddle me this, Commander.  Are you so naive to think that the Federation has never turned a blind eye in the pursuit of security?  Do you think I just happen to hold a lot of personal sway to get what I need to survive and continue my work?  What are the odds that I find a perfect facility for medical research just being on the run?  Think Commander.  The only reason you get to hold onto your precious ideals and rule of law is because we are there in the shadows to do the dirty work that keeps your hands clean, and your society of plenty intact.  We've been protecting the Federation in one form or another since its founding.  Whether you want to accept it or not doesn't matter."

The darker look on her face faded as the doctor checked the time.  "Oh!  Time flies when you're being berated.  I have an errand to run.  If you want to kill yourselves, now is the time." she said, reaching out near her and pushing something  only she could see, before her image distorted and then vanished.

[Bridge - USS Discovery]

After ten minutes, with the activity going on the bridge, the doors to the ready room opened.  Nevir was brisk, but a bit unsteady as he made it to the center of the bridge.  His eyes caught a person he didn't recognize, but the hue of her blue uniform gave away her medical department.  Shy doctor on the bridge hiding her face?  From what he heard earlier, she could really only be one person.

"Ms. Santiago, you don't need to hide yourself on the Bridge.  I know what happened between you and Galloway, but you have a place on my ship regardless of whether this ship is exploration or military.  The next time we reach drydock, I have a requisition for a counseling module to be put in.  Jaeger, don't go too far... I'll need a pilot." he said, standing by his chair as the chime for a hail came in.

"Right on time... on screen."

Jessica was once again on screen, smirking.  "I hope you make your choice Captain... I might not even need to execute them.  Your first officer seems eager to end his own life on his own."

Nevir grimaced.  Dammit, man.... this crew needs you more than me... "I'll go.  One shuttle, one pilot.  You let them go after I arrive, and send my people back, and release my ship.  Can you agree to that?"

"Works for me.  Once you land, I'll send them right back to your ship.  See you soon Captain." Stamen said, cutting the connection.  With the silence on the bridge, Nevir was shaking slightly, mostly in the hands.

"Jaeger... you're with me.  No runabout... just a shuttle. The rest of you... if I'm not able to speak with Galloway before he returns, then I need you to relay my orders.  As soon as they are on board, make for Columbus immediately.  Captain's orders.  Can I count on all of you?" he asked, hoping that they understood.

[Caves]

In the midst of peering around the tunnel, she jumped a foot in the air when Nathan approached. Her heart already beating thrice as much today, she patted her chest and sighed, leaning against the damp wall. "Shouldn't have had quad shots of expresso today..."

"Yeah, but that bravado isn't going to help us much in the long run," Kali reasoned meekly. "If we're not expendable, don't say we are. Look at what happened to Huqma! He completely bailed out of fear!"

As if summoned, Huqma turned the corner and came across them. Kali sighed and pushed off the wall. "Dammit, Huqma! There you are! Why the hell did you run? You could've been caved in or-"

Whatever spiel she had in store for him never saw the light of day. Huqma had wordlessly pulled out a phaser and shot her in the midsection.

After a beat, Kali thought she might have been hit with a mild stun, but when she instinctively clutched her abdomen and pulled her hand back, she found blood. She blinked twice in confusion and fell to her knees.

[Alien Cave System]

Nathan almost laughed at how Kali jumped when she noticed him, but then he saw the look on her face and all amusement fell away. While he completely agreed with what she said, there was nothing he could say in that moment that would help her feel better. Unfortunately, his concern for Kali's mental wellbeing had his reaction timing a touch slower than it could have been.

Although he moved to aim his phaser at Huqma the moment he saw the Edosian's weapon, he fired a second too late. The light of his stun passed the light from Huqma's phaser as it sped towards Kali. The stunned Edosian fell hard to the ground as Nathan moved to try and catch Kali. "Chief?? Kali!" Each word that fell from his lips grew increasingly louder. By the third one he was bellowing as he turned his head and called back the way he came, "Commander!!"

Protocol be damned, Nathan checked to see if the blast had gone all the way through. There appeared to be no damage to her spine, so he pulled one of Kali's arms over his shoulder and swung her into his arms bridal style. Not waiting for the rest of their team to come find them, he ran back towards the lab.

[Cave]

The shock and ensuing adrenaline rush after she realized she was shot hit her hard. Her brain was beating furiously in her head and the wild pulsing sound in her ears sounded like it was her heart overclocking.

"Ry...?" she questioned quietly, then her sight went first in a blaze of white when she fell to her knees from surprise and pain - and that was all that she could remember.

She weaved in and out of consciousness, not even sure if she was being transported somewhere or recognizing that Ryder was carrying her off. Whenever she was conscious, her abdomen burned and throbbed in unimaginable pain. She may have alternated between gasping out in a horrible sob or fall silent as she continued to fall unconscious over and over. It was like she was stuck in boot mode.

And the more they moved, the more the pain jostled about. She was conscious enough to evolve from gasps to sobs of pain. Stabbing, explosions, physical beat downs - she's experienced them all - but she had never been shot before (successfully at least).

Ian snarled the medic's name when he saw Ryder carrying Kali.

"Gibbons!

Moving to help Ryder he growled.

"What happened? Did that wench Stamen send in security?"

Not waiting for and answer, Ian focused the science officer.

"Mister Inzjana, new orders, find out what this jackal of a scientist was working on!"

Ian looked at growing fiasco and wondered what he'd done karmically to account for his badly this mission was going, as each minute continued to be worse than the last.

UNKNOWN CAVE

Inzjana was down a tunnel that lead to a dead end, or more to the point, was now a dead end when she heard the distinctive sound of Phaser fire. Bolting back the way she had come, Inzjana made it to where the Phaser rang out to see Kali unconscious and being carried back to the main group and a stunned medic with a Phaser in his lap as he sagged against a wall of the tunnel.

Anger welling up inside of her, Inzjana calmed herself using the Vulcan technique of expelling emotions without the need to meditate and waited for Ryder to round the corner with his charge. Like a stalking cat, Inzjana moved to the prone Edosian, picked up the medics Phaser and with all her Vulcan strength, broke the weapon in two and tossed it aside.

Knowing what it was like to be shot by another Starfleet officer, Inzjana raised her Disruptor and aimed it at the Edosian, knowing full well that she could pull the trigger on her own weapon that was set to 'kill' and no one would be the wiser. How easy it would be to pull the trigger and end the life of this pitiful being in front of her and make all the bad thoughts go away. After all, it wasn't the unevolved pond scum of a science officer that had shot Inzjana and left her for dead, but this low life had still tried to terminate Kali.

What to do? Allow Huqma to live and be sentenced to rehabilitation at a Federation facility? Was that justice? After all, Kali could die from her wounds, as Inzjana almost did from her own shooting, what justice was that for Kali?

Inzjana depressed the trigger even more, not quite to the firing position but it was close? She wanted to, but what would that say about her? After all, Vulcans have a respect for all life in all its forms, but right at this moment, a moment of anger at the injustice of it all, she really didn't care about Vulcan philosophy, or did she?

For what seemed like ages, Inzjana stood there with her Disruptor pointed at the Edosian medic, her finger beginning to ache as she maintained the position of pre-fire of the trigger.

Luckily for Huqma, Inzjana's better angels got the best of her, as her Vulcan side reasserted itself as she deactivated the Disruptor and placed it back in its holster and made her way back to the rest of the away team, in time for Inzjana to receive new orders. It was just as well, that no one knew how close Inzjana had come to murdering Huqma, a fact of life that every Vulcan must live with, but control.

"Aye Commander," Inzjana stated, redirecting her direction slightly to arrive at the mad scientist's lab, doing her best to ignore the remains of her fellow beings.

Gibbons, the more seasoned medical officer, wasted no time reaching for his critically injured patient and urged Ryder and Galloway to slowly ease her onto an empty biobed instead of the floor. He instinctively applied pressure to avoid losing any more blood to her abdomen and was already feeling around her wrist for a pulse.

"Heart rate is low. She's losing blood," Gibbons announced, placing both hands now on her stomach. "Shot in the abdominal cavity by phaser." He pulled her up a bit to look at her back. "No exit wounds, possible spinal injury. Both hands on the wound and hold tight, Ryder. You look stronger than both of us."

His hands were covered with blood when he pulled back to get his tricorder, but he was naturally unfazed as he quickly scanned her. While it worked, he asked, "Where's Huqma? He was carrying the Chief's specialized meds. I need to sedate her and start injecting plasma replenishers."

[Bridge - USS Discovery]

He tell just from looking at her that she was a mix of conflicting emotions.  He was absolutely sure that she didn't understand why he selected her.. and it was clear from the bridge crew that no one else did.  Prophets, he barely had an understanding himself.

Nevir sighed before turning to his loudmouth, but frankly compassionate officer.  "Your objection is noted, Ensign.  But this is not up to debate." he said, thinking that it was the end of the conversation.  But true to his image, Addams persisted.

"Ensign... Addam... Don... listen to me.  You are not the only one who owes Wu.  Do not delude yourself into thinking you are the surrogate for Alex.  I understand your feelings, and I share them.  But I would not be bringing her if she didn't have the qualities I needed for this.  Just like I need her with me, I need you at the helm.  If anything, ANYTHING, goes wrong, I need the flying you demonstrated when I first let you behind the helm.  And Galloway will need you.  I have no intention to let anything happened to Miss Jaeger.  She's my responsibility."

"Ardyn... let's go." he said, turning on his heels and walking out.

[Shuttlecraft]

Without allowing any more objections or delays, Nevir boarded the shuttle with Ardyn, and they took off towards the planet.  Nevir was silent for a while, but then turned to Ardyn.

"I'm sorry for using you like this."

[Engineering]

Five months ago, Declan was in this very engine room, another victim of the polywater virus.  In fact many of his compatriots suffered a similar fate, leaving the ship exposed to numerous failures. After the vaccine was synthesized, repairs were required. Speed forward and repairs were required once more.

An engineer was never satisfied with simple repairs for the most exotic love stories were with their machines, their starships. They would spend an eternity mending her wounds and curse all that would put one bolt out of place. Engineering had not been Declan's first love but he was soon to be captivated by its embrace.

Though he had been gone for a while, a temporary transfer for training, he had been reassigned back to the Discovery just in time for this supposedly routine survey mission. However, he had not the chance to enjoy such excitement since Chief Engineer Donovan had him assigned to general maintenance duty for the past few weeks. He had questioned a lieutenant's order and for his insuordination, he received their version of latrine duty. Declan certainly did not relish it but it was over and he was once again welcomed to the heart and lungs of their ship. A ship in yet another crisis.

Said lieutenant was no where to be seen which suited him just fine. The officer was incompetent as far as he was concerned but that was for a different time. Not exactly his finest hour returning to the Discovery but then, no one messed with his baby.

Sven, his neurotic, conspiracy theorist companion of old had attempted, since his return, to fill him in on all the things that happened over the time he was gone, including some of the new officers that he would be required to report to. One of those was Lieutenant Stark. A looker to be sure but intelligent, knew her way around engines, unlike the other officer he got in trouble over. She was still younger than him, but he was use to it. If you wait till middle age to enlist, expect to be the one old cranky fart among a boatful of kids.

Ariste was by all means surprised to get a call in from the bridge. Halting her work on the systems, she tapped her badge.

"Exactly as well as you're seeing up there, Lt. Shields yet but we're working on it. As for getting out of here..." Glancing over her shoulder, she scanned over all the Engineers panicked and trying to get everything up and running. "I'll keep you updated."

Declan approached her, among the ordered chaos of their peers. "Ma'am, Petty Officer Vincent, returning to my duties in Engineering. I can see an extra pair of hands can be useful right about now. Where do you want me?". One thing Sven never told him was Stark's leadership style. Guess he was about to find out.

USS Discovery ? Bridge

It appeared that the person who had requested her presence aboard the bridge was not eager to reveal themselves to her. While she slumped further in her seat, the doors slid open to reveal the Bajoran captain striding across the bridge. Attempting to not attract more attention to herself from the command staff, the counselor slowly began hoisting herself up on the seat to regain a proper posture that was suited for the bridge. The counselor's brows shot up in surprise when the captain addressed her by acknowledging her moment with Galloway before promising to consider updating the ship with a counseling module.

"That's kind of you, sir," she sort of mumbled while lifting up her gaze but it was already too late. Nevir was on the way near the turbolift doors when he called for the fair-haired flight Lieutenant to assist him in his away travel. Her eyes traveled back over to the view screen with the darkened station floated in the vastness of space and a shudder crawled down her spine just as a hail came through at the Operations console. The view screen morphed in front of her eyes before the face of a young woman filled the screen, taunting the captain while holding the lives of an away team that included Galloway in her hand. The counselor immediately stood from her seat when the captain acquiesced to her demand.

Before she could open her mouth to speak, the communications line was cut off and the captain addressed the crew with an order to return to the Starbase once the away team had returned. Just as P'Larr opened up her mouth to protest, the impassioned helmsman pleaded with the captain to take Yaeger's place. Her crystal blue eyes darted towards the front of the bridge where she saw the sunkissed blonde stand from flight controls to reveal a small belly.  The counselor's eyes widened with a bit of surprise mixed with horror at the thought of a pregnant woman being thrust into a hostage negotiation.

Captain Nevir cut down the ensign to size, immediately shooting down his idea due to the personal nature of the mission. P'Larr shook her head in disappointment towards the captain's decision but remained quiet until his form disappeared behind the turbolift with Yaeger in tow. Once the silence had settled a bit on the bridge, the ensign threw her hands out to the side, "Does anyone want to tell me what is going on?!" she hissed, her Klingon ridges becoming more pronounced with the agitation she felt at being kept in the dark despite negotiating being her specialty more than the psychiatric aspects of her discipline. Running a hand through her hair, she sighed deeply to calm herself.

A voice intruded her calming thoughts, once again belonging to Ensign Adams who inquired about the possibility of tracking Yaeger and the captain's movements through her unborn child. "It's a bit far out there... but perhaps a viable solution. I need to know the status of the ship's systems first before delving into Ms. Yaeger's medical file to pull up some preliminary information on the fetus. Then, scanners would have to be adjusted and refined in order to pick up a proper fetal signature. I don't even know if that's ever been done. Also, I'm not sure how safe it would all be. You seemed to be very intent on the child's security, this might put her baby in even more danger."

It might be worth the risk but P'Larr couldn't be so sure. Turning to the security crewman, her eyes widened in his direction hoping for some assistance during her first day on the bridge.

Ian left Gibbons to work on Kali as he joined Inzjana, he put on the odd glasses and growled as he read the messages.

"Specimen my arse! That leam-leat will not be turnin ' me into a lab rat, I don't bloody care who is backin' her."

Ian handed the glasses back to the science officer and continued.

"Once you have a chance ta get the gist of what she's doin' report directly ta me. No need ta have anyone  else go Huqma on us. If that worthless git survives Ryder, he won't be survivin' me as I have a powerful need ta hurt someone right now."

Ian then moved off to a place where he could provide security for Gibbons as he continued to work on Kali.

[Engineering]

To say she was expecting to be spoken to was a lie. When she suddenly heard a voice, very close and addressing her, she tried (and failed) to suppress a jolt of shock. Sucking in air through her teeth, she quickly smoothed her ruffled feathers, turning around to face the man.

A newbie, or a rather a returning crewman. Her eyes - VISOR - scanned him up and down, gathering a good reading from the reporting officer. Damn, when did she become high-ranking enough to be reported in to? But as usual, Donovan wasn't in Engineering, so with a quick glance around the room, it was easy to see she was the highest ranking present.

"Right you are, Vincent." A wry smirk accompanied her words, as she did another once over of Engineering. Already duties had been doled out - everyone available was already working on something. The only one working solo was of course, Stark herself. Why she'd been isolated was a mystery, she was barely even allowed in Engineering. But since she was, no harm in getting some help right? Vet the newbie while she was at it.

"You can join me. I'm sure you're briefed already but to recap," turning around, she motioned toward her station, before twisting back around. "Weapons and shields are down, and they shouldn't be. Our job to find out why, and fix it. Don't hesitate to ask me about the systems if you need to, and you can contact the other Engineering teams for status on repairs. If you're up for it, that is?"

Circling around to her original perch, she turned to glance at him, trying to get a read on his readiness to work. Reporting in to a crisis is never fun, she'd had her fair share of it too. She wouldn't blame him if he felt overwhelmed.

Quote
A voice intruded her calming thoughts, once again belonging to Ensign Adams who inquired about the possibility of tracking Yaeger and the captain's movements through her unborn child. "It's a bit far out there... but perhaps a viable solution. I need to know the status of the ship's systems first before delving into Ms. Yaeger's medical file to pull up some preliminary information on the fetus. Then, scanners would have to be adjusted and refined in order to pick up a proper fetal signature. I don't even know if that's ever been done. Also, I'm not sure how safe it would all be. You seemed to be very intent on the child's security, this might put her baby in even more danger

Declan gave Stark a mischevious smile. " I was born for it, Ma'am."
He could have added that calamity had become the new normal aboard the Discovery. Of course after doing punishment duty of fixing toilets, repairing lights , replicators and other assorted doodahs, peril was a great change of pace. Stark never stated that they could die, which might have been the proverbial buzz kill. Considering they were Starfleet, it was pretty much implied.

He looked at the monitors she had showed him. "You say there was no reason for the problem with shields and weapons..Prometheus class is a twenty year old design and often new technologies don't mesh with what we have without hiccups so firmware is always possible. Operations can do a diagnostic but before we give our cousins any glory..  He studied the data which revealed very little. " It could be a minor glitch which has cascaded. A gel pack, relay or even a junction could be compromised. Both shields and weapons use a lot of power, mostly from the warp core so plasma manifolds need to be checked. Jefferies tubes T19 and T45 both have subsystems that could cause a problem but zero energy output seems an unlikely result...Primary Quantum Emission Capacitors could be influx" Declan sighed, the capacitors were a pain in the ass to get to. Hoping it was just an ejected chip would be asking to much. He had gone over the potential theories out loud with Stark, though his own mind was pondering all these possibilities.
