"Na'shaya," T'Ra replied to her fellow Vulcan. She moved over to the ops console once Inzjana was situated at Science. The console was currently unoccupied. The Ops department being tasked with a great number of other things had decided staffing the bridge was not their first priority.

A blinking light in the corner of the screen caught her attention, and with a few quick key strokes, T'Ra pulled up the alert. It was an audio transmission. Much of it was garbled, but once she filtered out the static, it was unmistakably Vulcan. She patched it through the main audio for the bridge before turning to Inzjana.

"We have a distress call," T'Ra said, addressing the bridge in general. "Inzjana, can you pick up any ship emissions?" she asked, scrawling a quick message to Mr. Adams, requesting he reported to the bridge. She wanted to know if he'd come across this kind of situation before.

BRIDGE - SCIENCE STATION ONE

"Na'Shaya Captain," Inzjana answered back to her captain, with a nod.

Watching T'Ra move to ops, Inzjana was confused as to why the captain of the Discovery wasn't actually in the command chair but in the spirit of 'there must be a logical reason', Inzjana decided not to query it.

Inzjana, in response to captain Jones' question began scanning for any engine emissions as well as trying to clear up the largely garbled transmission but was clearly coming from a subspace emergency channel.

[Holodeck]

A door opened On the left wall. A human female came in with wet tears rolling down her cheeks. She had stopped to see she walked in a new world. It was not her quarters.

Don turned around his head with his upper body turning to see what was up. He saw her. Rather she looked sad and confused.

"Hey," he said softly to her.

"I am... am ... am s-s-sorry," her lower lip was trembling fast and her body was shaking with chills.

Turning his whole body to look at the sad female. Don held his hands up like a person trying to calm a wild beast. "Shhh...honey, calm down," he told her. He had wanted to see get her calm down first and then he could attempt to help her.

Then she spun around to escape him. As she got to the door it did not open because she had stopped far enough so it won't open.

The hot shot pilot stopped in his tracks. "Hey...You need some help?" He felt for her. He hated to see someone in pain. So he had waited for her.

[hologram]

The female shook her head as denying that she needed help.

"Oh, Come on... Look-" he was cut off by a small chirp from the DATA pad he had tucked in his cargo pocket.

"We have a distress call," T'Ra said, addressing the bridge in general. "Inzjana, can you pick up any ship emissions?" she asked, scrawling a quick message to Mr. Adams, requesting he reported to the bridge. She wanted to know if he'd come across this kind of situation before.

He slipped it out to see what it was. The Captain was asking for his presence on the bridge.

"Oh." He was startled. Female in distress versus a Captain's calling. Bad timing he thought.

"Hun, O Captain on the bridge is summoning me," he told her. Biting his lower lip. "My name is DD Addam. Look. I would love to help you now...But, but," he held the DATA pad up. 'Contact me later.....okay?" He was standing to be sure she was going to handle that.

Her face was down cast and she looked down mumbling...Men... they are all the same.

DD heard it. Oh. She was not in good terms with some fellow. "Okay...Okay...uh...go on think me as what you want...just try to seek help...And sorry I have to go," he rushed out.

He forgot to leave the program shut off. That he would figure shut down on its own. Deep inside, he felt like a total jerk walking out on the poor female who had a broken heart. And he made a wound deeper. Go men! How bad can they hurt her. Sigh.

[bridge]

A moment later, DD came walking in. "You summoned me, Captain?" He asked. His dark eyes darted to the screen where there was no nebula. Why was he expected to see it on the screen. Silly him.

Nevir was pleased seeing Inzjana getting settled in and starting immediately, and he had to admit, he was also curious about this signal.  Especially more so now that it was a distress signal.

"Check to see if it has any Federation frequencies." he said, going over and standing back the Captain's seat.  He was unsure whether to take it, considering that T'Ra was technically on the bridge... even if she was pretending to be an ops officer currently.

"Captain..." he said, not sure exactly what to ask... is she going to take her chair, or stand at ops?  Nevir was frankly confused.

T'Ra looked up from the ops station when the doors parted to admit Mr. Adams to the bridge. It was probably the first time a civilian had ever been to that part of the ship, so it was no surprise to see his eyes dart around.

What she did not expect was to see was to see the first officer freeze upon reaching the center chair, brows furrowed and the muscles in his shoulders tensed. Unlike Vulcans, humans tended to communicate quite a bit through body language. "No need to be confused, Mr. Tekin," T'Ra replied, stepping away from ops and back towards the captain's chair. "With the lull on the bridge, I simply did not feel like sitting. But," she continued, "the situation has intensified. You may want to sit down as well for this next part."

She motioned for the civilian to come closer. "Thank you for coming to the bridge, Mr. Adams. I was hoping you might be able to clarify something for us." That said, she played the second half of the message.

Starship parts? Now that was interesting.  Responding to Alex, she put the ship into full speed "Increasing speed to Warp 9. If all things go well, we should be there in an hour, maybe less ." she said  her usual cocky smirk crossing her face. Full speed. Now this is where it was at.

Of course, as any space traveller knows, space is cold, near to absolute zero in point of fact, unless near to a star or other form of optimal mass. And seeing as all spacecraft burn fuel and use power, they give off a tremendous amount of thermal radiation, making them completely visible to sensors.
Unfortunately this wasn't going to help them much as all electromagnetic waves propagate at the speed of light or slower and they were at warp. But Inzjana had an idea to use subspace itself to determine what type of ship they were heading for, well at least it's mass-shadow anyway.

All spacecraft in the universe using a warp drive run on the same principle: At warpspeed, the starship is not travelling faster-than-light, that would be impossible. It is space itself that is moving faster-than-light because unlike mass, space has no speed limit. But in order to circumvent the light barrier, the warp drive must use negative energy to to compress spacetime in front of the ship and expand it behind. Negative energy has a negative pressure density allowing a ship to seem to achieve the impossible and does so via the Casimir Effect. It was found long ago that negative energy exists in subspace, the dimensional realm that exists under normal spacetime and has a warped geometry.

Starships that use warp drive require a subspace bubble, or warp bubble as it is also referred to. This protrusion in to subspace would obviously produce a measurable effect.

Inzjana measured the subspace warp frequencies and had her answer. "Commander," Inzjana called, motioning to the screen with her left hand.

Don was very confused. Seeing the First Officer in the Captain's chair and the Captain at the Ops station. He placed his hands up. "Woah....who's commanding this ship?" He asked.

He took the ear piece and placed it in his right ear. He listened to the beginning. His eye brows crunched up for the action of hearing the beating drums and the instruments. He tapped the ear device in his ear. Turning his head toward the console hoping to get better hearing.

On the twelfth second he turned to look at the Captain. "Is this a joke?" He asked. Honest. He walked in with first officer in the captain's chair and the Captain of the ship was in Ops station. He saw her expression and went back to listening.

He was trying to stop giggling but then words came up. "oh lyrics!" He made it sounded like an alarm like the ship was being shot at. "Thank for the fish....."after a few words he mumbled. Then he stopped laughing as he really trying hear the sound distress. He looked up. The serious look washed over his face,  "Fish. Destruction of a planet... sheesh Captain I think the world is in danger with to much fish!" Then he held his hand up to shush everyone. "They mention dissolved by a planet and pregnant women and so long so long so long..."

He snapped his fingers. "Aha, that bug is still in the system.... we not flush it," he replied. Wishing he did not use the word "we" cause he was not Starfleet. "Can I try a different approach?" He leaned to press a few buttons to adjust the reading. "It has to be a bug...why would we hear that?" He was skeptic on this.

"Okay. System says it's real....we gonna need all lot of tartar sauce for this one," he joked.

Nevir resisted the urge to groan as Adams made it to the bridge and brought with him the typical boisterous demeanor of an intergalactic bush pilot.  He ignored the question about who was in command, instead opting for what the Captain said and taking a seat... or at least he would had Inzjana not called him over.  At Adams's last joke, Nevir turned to him.

"Mr. Adams, just the work, please.  I can assure you, we have trained officers who have assured us that all systems are normal."

Walking over to the science station, he looked over the CSO's shoulder, trying to get a sense of what she was talking about, and why she called to him.  He followed her gaze to the screen, and raised his eyebrows.  "That's Federation alright... not Starfleet.  It's.... Vulcan?"

"See what you can do to get any clearer picture on the signal.  See if you can find a registry.  Captain... if this is a Vulcan signal, it can't be broadcasting that... fish thing.  Recommend going to Yellow Alert?"

Feeling perturbed that they had so many misadventures recently and were most likely flying into another one, he instinctively reached down, squeezing Ardyn's shoulder before leaving the helm and heading to Ops, joining T'ra and Addams. "Fish? Tartar sauce?" Alex queried quietly, glancing at Jones. "Captain, could this be a similar case to the polywater incident?"

Inzjana surprised herself, making a joke in reference to the song at the end of the degraded message being, 'So long and thanks for all the fish' a song from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Professor Andre Offenbach one time, made Inzjana and a friend of her's and fellow cadet, Natasha Delacroix play the Holodeck version with him. Andre is like that, he always distilled a sense of wonder in all the students of his class at Starfleet Academy. Along with his eccentricities. His favourite bit was the Infinite Improbability Drive of the starship Heart of Gold. After going through the entire program, with Inzjana saying "Illogical" although secretly enjoying herself and Natasha wanting to play it again. Thankfully it was just that one time.

Last Inzjana heard Natasha was dropped out of science and went in to flight, or security, Inzjana wasn't sure, because Natasha wasn't sure herself.

After a moment, Inzjana had ran the special filter she had made when the last time they had received a degraded message.

"Captain, Commander, this is the best I can do," Inzjana stated, "I shall play it on the main viewer."

"My apologies Captain...I was referencing the song 'so long and thanks for all the fish', the last part of the message. It is from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. As the author explains, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy outsold the Encyclopaedia Galactica largely because it was cheaper, but also because it had on it's cover the phrase: Don't Panic! Written in large friendly letters. It is a book series written in the Earth year 1985 called The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. My Professor at the Academy had the Holonovel version ma'am," Inzjana stated stoically.

Inzjana turned back to her UI somewhat embarressed by her out-of-character referencing of a Holonovel, but it was one of Andre's favourites so she couldn't help but remember those times. As well as his extensive knowledge of science, he taught Inzjana one more important life lesson and that was to not take everything so seriously. A bit of humour can be good for you, he had told her while playing with a Yoyo.

Written in large friendly letters. It is a book series written in the Earth year 1985 called The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. My Professor at the Academy had the Holonovel version ma'am," Inzjana stated stoically.

Inzjana turned back to her UI somewhat embarrassed by her out-of-character referencing of a Holonovel, but it was one of Andre's favorites so she couldn't help but remember those times. As well as his extensive knowledge of science, he taught Inzjana one more important life lesson and that was to not take everything so seriously. A bit of humor can be good for you, he had told her while playing with a Yoyo.

"So long and thanks for all the fish."  Ardy turned behind her, the familiar line ringing back the memory of buttered popcorn and a dimly lit holodeck with a movie screen on the back wall, and all the old classics of the 20th century playing until the early hours. Those were one of the few times she could ever remember having her dad truly to herself. More often than not, she'd have fallen asleep by the time they were done, but life was good.
Shaking herself out of her nostalgia with Alex's nudge, Ardy nodded as Inzjana mentioned the movie in question. "I remember that movie too. It was weird, I'll tell you that. Think there might be some code inside the message?"
