BRIDGE

Once on the bridge, Inzjana felt even more self conscious of not being in uniform and she chided herself for such an emotional thought, seeing that the ship's roster was in beta rotation.

"I apologise for my attire captain," Inzjana stated coming on to the bridge and making her way to science station one where Lieutenant T'Prina was currently residing "Welcome to the Discovery Lieutenant, it will be agreeable to serve with you."

Inzjana waited for the officer to vacate the terminal and was wondering whether it was appropriate to call T'Prina 'ma'am' due to her fellow science officer being a smidgen above her on the ranking scale.

[Bridge]

Adeyemi was not long in appearing after the Vulcan hybrid science officer. When he had been a raw ensign, a grizzled old petty officer he'd befriended had had a saying: Admirals are never late. Everyone else is early.

Still, for a middle aged man who outranked everyone else on the flagship he hadn't been too slow. The admiral had been slowly taking over the security department since he had arrived. It used to take a joke and a small conversation with the officer on duty, now all it required was a look. The yellow garbed security officer merely logged out of the terminal and went on her way.

"Reporting for duty, captain," Adeyemi said. On the viewscreen, he noted that they had arrived at Zacrim V. The petty officer, Reyes, was trying to hail them.

The admiral glanced at the Discovery's highest rank enlisted crew member, a touch sourly. The woman had always struck him the wrong way. Her technical expertise was off the charts, but that was about all that was remarkable about her, in his mind. Reyes had a reputation. He made a mental note to check her evaluation and fitness reports. Surely she wasn't going to be representing the Federation on this mission.

Was she?

Back in her days of colony jumping and thumbing her nose up at daddy, Kali had quickly discovered it only took a smile that promised adventure and a sashay of hips to fall spoiled from lonely officers and opportunistic explorers. From there she quickly went from jumping on top of apple boxes for free beers to table dancing at top-end bar establishments on Risa. All of it paid her post-grad studies in astro-mechanical engineering.

So having scrounged for single bar latinum in clubs, she knew the clientele from top to bottom. But what did this have to do with present time?

The admiral looked at her with the same stink-eye she's seen from the prude jobs that were dragged by their peers for drinks and a dance. Holier than thou, may every sinned dancer be struck by lightning or worse - be given their first wrinkle at the age of 24.

So Kali did what she did best with such clientele while she waited for the captain's response. She turned a bit, crossed her legs for days, and smiled indulgently (sharply) at Adeyemi.

"Admiral," she greeted.

The admiral reacted to her gestures as if he'd been electroshocked. A nearly lifelong Christian, security officer, and athlete, he clearly wasn't used to dealing with women. A shy, attacked expression flirted across his face.

"Chief," He mumbled, stress or nerves resuscitating his accent. He sounded as if he was fresh off the boat. He mentally chided himself. Who did this woman think she was, throwing him off his game like this? He'd stared down death on the battlefields...at least a dozen times. If he had a slip of latinum for every time he had the good admiral would have enough for a root beer and a plate of gagh on noodles back at Puzzle's. Adeyemi cleared his throat.

"I see you have not been able to raise the colony or the planet on comms, Chief Reyes." He said with just the barest hint of a peeved tone. There. Let her deal with that.

Kali tilted her head in a shrug and played shrewd. "Sorry Admiral." She sounded anything but apologetic.

"Seismic activity can disrupt ground comms," she repeated. She then crossed her arms over her chest - and squeezed. "That means lots of feedback. Not the good kind. You'll need men on the ground to either fix it or tune into a special channel the Discovery can tap into via comm buoy. Unless of course, my crewman wants to take a stab at the interference."

She gestured absently over at Jeb.

BRIDGE

Inzjana sat at her post and immediately switched the subspace sensors over to RADAR, LIDAR and Hyperspectral sensors. As soon as the telemetry data came poring in, Inzjana set the computer and Science Lab Two to work.

"Captain, initial reports from the sensors show that the seismic instability is not due to any rogue celestial body, at least, not one of any significant mass to cause gravitational distortions strong enough to have this kind of affect," Inzjana stated, back to her usual Vulcan self, "however - I am reading planet wide electrical storms...category five atmospheric vortices, I believe humans call them, sharknadoes, err, no, tornadoes, hurricanes and cyclones...several erupting volcanoes...and constant, planet-wide ground-quakes averaging nine point seven on the Richter Scale and higher."

Inzjana paused to take in more of the telemetry and ignored the banter between Reyes and Adeyemi for the present moment, adding, "Currently the colony's shields are holding but for how long is unclear - Any form of communication, subspace or otherwise, would be impossible - Transporters are out of the question sir, given the high levels of static electricity in the atmosphere. It is unclear as to what is causing the planet's instability, however, it does appear to be originating from below ground."

The doors had just slid open and she had one foot into freedom before the Captain threw an order at her. Kali paused, swore mutely between her teeth, and turned back around for the Comm station. After a heartbeat's worth of button pushing, she connected frequencies to the colony planet side and used her best customer service voice.

=/\= Zacrim V, this is the USS Discovery. We are inbound to your colony's location for immediate evac. Please respond. =/\=

At first, she was sure someone had picked up, but the call fell through in a smattering of static. Her nose wrinkling, Kali flipped for the planet's entire frequency channels just in case.

=/\=Zacrim V, this is the USS Discovery. We're having a communications issue and are broadcasting on all available channels. Please respond. =/\=

Again, something sounded like it was trying to establish connection, but it all devolved into static. Kali was fully in her seat now and turned around. "Captain, I'm getting too much feedback for a clear channel. It's probably from all the seismic activity down there and it's definitely putting their comm towers on the fritz. I've got a couple of solutions to fix that, but that'll require someone to head down planet side."

Nevir frowned, his eyes glued to the planet.  Coordination efforts would be much more difficult if they couldn't get the comm systems established on the planet.  He tried to go back to his younger days as a planetary scientist.  But it just wasn't coming back to him.

"I agree, Lieutenant." he said, nodding towards Inzjana.  "Sub-lithospheric destabilization is going to be more difficult to deal with..." he said, tapping his fingers on his chair before standing up.

"Alright, this is now officially a full evacuation.. and a mystery.  Adeyemi, Reyes, I want you down there to try to re-establish communications and increase the shielding... I want to give those people as much time as possible.  Inzjana, get together a team and try to find out what happened down there.  I feel like I've heard of this situation before... I just can't remember what.  Get temperature, magnetic, and mineral data.  If it's from the planet's core, then there has to be something going on in there.  Just to rule it out, also get the solar reading." he said, sighing as he hit his badge.

=/\= "Bridge to Shuttlebay.  Galloway the transporters are not an option; we are doing a full evacuation.  I'm sending teams down with you to assist.  Get all the shuttles prepped."  =/\=

Jebediah Schrock

With all the intensive banter around him, Jebby needed a place to hide. He found just such a place in his work. Unlike the bizarre interaction between the Admiral and his boss, the movement of the tectonic plates (and communication towers on them) was predictable at least on the micro scale. Jebby tried to predict it.
Furiously entering data into his console, the young, scrappy, hungry crewman worked on and on until he could successfully model the movement of three transmission nodes using =, as well as the electrical storms around them.
Looking proudly at his work, Jeb was about to show it off when he was ordered to do it.

"Already done, boss!" Jeb announced with pride. "Using a ninth-degree Taylor Polynomial, I've managed to account for the storms and plate shift for three towers in a quieter area. I can send or receive a clear message."
Jebby smiled very proudly. He was helpful!

Ian smiled when he heard he captain's order. "Think ahead and you are never behind." He thought as he tapped his commbadge to reply.

=/\= "All embarked craft are already prepped and on hot standby Captain. Ready to launch on your order." =/\=

Ian felt like shouting 'scramble, scramble, scramble', but this wasn't Kunming. This was here and now and real. Instead he shouted to the pilots milling about the shuttlebay.

"Mount up and prepare for departure. Accordin' ta sensors, you gentlebeings are about ta have ta do some serious flyin'. Given the chop in the atmo down there, I suggest cuttin' your inertia dampeners ta no less than 75%, it will give you a bumpy ride, but you'll be able ta feel how your ship is flyin' as opposed ta havin' ta wait for the computer ta tell you."

Ian boarded the Allegheny and strapped in, knowing that conditions were bad and were unlikely to improve any time soon. As he listened to the bridge chatter, he thought.

"Seems like my opportunity ta see who is a pilot and who is a driver is comin' up sooner than I thought."

Adeyemi let the order register in his brain. He forced himself to not speak.

"We'll head right down, sir," He managed to croak out. "Establishment of communication and shielding will be our top priority. We'll get it done."

Adeyemi realized he was babbling. Covertly, he snuck a glance at Reyes, wondering how she was taking the news. Knowing her, she'd probably need a nip or two at a flask and a PADD filled with technical schematics and dance routines.

"We'll take my personal shuttle," He announced to Reyes and Tekin. "It's too small to be used in the evacuation, and so we can spare it. I'll have my aide meet us in the shuttlebay."

Without another word, the former lifelong Starfleet Security man executed a sharp about face and strode towards the turbolift, not bothering to see if Reyes was following. He was already becoming overly stiff and formal, a bad sign for things to come. Adeyemi could only hope whatever disaster was brewing down on the planet would be easier to solve than having Kali Reyes on his team.

Kali opened her mouth to protest about her new tag team partner, but the Admiral was already rattling off and skirting for the lift. With pinched lips, she could only nod at Tekin and clap a hand on Crewman Schrock's shoulder, bless his little mathematician heart.

"You sure did," she said proudly. "And you have a few seconds before the next seismic activity scrambles the connection. We'll raise the odds when I get the tower up."

She pulled the specialized repair belt kit underneath the console and strapped it on. "Keep a clear channel on my communicator in the meantime. I'll be on channel Bravo-Echo-Echo-Romeo. Good luck, crewman!" She winked and spirited quickly after the Admiral before he got any ideas about closing the doors on her face.

"Bet it has Klingon leather seats," she snarked at the Admiral as the doors closed.

"It has standard issue seats, to go along with everything else." Adeyemi informed her bluntly. "Including a standard issue pilot. Which will go with our mission here today. Lift, full stop."

When the turbolift had slowed down, Adeyemi turned to the petty officer and narrowed his eyes just a bit. He crossed his arms over his chest and set his jaw. It was his I am brass look.

"We're there to normalize planetary communications and reinforce shielding. The captain and these people are counting on us, Reyes. I know you've got the technical know how." Why Adeyemi himself had been placed with her he would never know. He only had his experience to offer. Hopefully it was enough. "And that's all that is required of us. No games, nothing else."

Adeyemi had tossed the dice, but it was clear he was no gambler. He'd said his piece and tried to stare her down. Hopefully Reyes didn't have enough frontline experience with this type of thing.

Kali rolled her shoulders back until she was in perfect parade rest, which pushed her chest and chin up. The guy practically towered over her. Well, almost everybody did. She mentally decided to synthesize a pair of lifts for her boots one day. Kali put on her best straight face when he tried to dress her down, but eventually a light popped in her head and suddenly she didn't feel keen on listening to him anymore.

Her closed expression changed to something akin to coy. "Hold that thought, Admiral. Aren't you just here to supervise? I found nothing on the syllabus about pulling rank. As a matter of fact, I think I outrank you here - on this ship at least." She took one step forward, stood as tall as possible, and leaned forward into his space, asserting dominance.

"For all intents in purposes, I think you have to adhere to my command," she said thickly, grinning. "What do you think, admiral?"

Adeyemi was over six feet tall and weighed in at just a skosh over 200 lbs, and a lot of that was still muscle. A big boy. He had faced down defeat and fought the odds to win numerous times, both in his career, sports, and his personal life. He liked to think of himself as a victor, a hard ass, a tough, no nonsense and fair officer. Someone to respect, perhaps even fear a bit. But the tone and cunning and posture of this much smaller, lower ranked officer defeated him.

His shaved head drooped just a bit, chin to chest. He muttered something that might have been an affirmative, or a word in his native language. Whatever it was, it sounded beaten.

"...lift, resume." Adeyemi said quietly. He uncrossed his arms and backed away as far as he could from her, which wasn't much at all. " =/\= Smythe, get your ass to the shuttle bay, double time. I want my personal vessel prepped. =/\= "

" =/\= Are we going to on a holiday? Lord knows I deserve it, with you ordering me-- =/\= " Smythe's English voice was saying.

" =/\= Just get the shuttle prepped. Myself, and Chief Reyes. Adeyemi out. =/\= "

Adeyemi wasn't in the mood for any more disrespect. He hoped by rolling over for her she'd cut him some slack. But in his heart of hearts he knew it was going to be a long away mission.

[Turbolift]

Dad always said, "Your mouth is going to get you killed." And that was ironic because the last biting insult she threw at him before leaving was straight up murder - until he was actually murdered by greedy trading partners. Since then, her mouth had taken her places both wondrous and troubling, with barely a filter there on par to a Tellurite.

So she waited for something. And waited. It was a very small turbolift, but a big guy like the Admiral could probably make one hell of a use with it. He could smack her around or kill her like a Klingon whose honor was threatened. Or at least scream at her until she succumbed to either deafness or fear.

The corner of her mouth twitched, almost giving away her gamble. But the Admiral folded his cards and resumed with hardly a response. And when he exited the lift, Kali almost doubled over behind his back, scared from hell to back like a recoiled cobra.

She was going to put coffee on the stand for her impending court martial. She didn't know why she mouthed off like that. The way he spoke just kind of pushed her into it. Like a spray bottle hovering over a cornered cat.

"Oh my god," she whispered to herself in horror. "I think I broke the Admiral."

Tekin was going to kill her. She almost comically stumbled chasing after him. "That was just lift-talk, Admiral! Please don't court martial me!"

Don Damien Addams

#59

[Shuttle bay to Space]

Don felt he was in his game now. Since he was a kid he learned to fly. Joy riding his mother's ship. He was a flight officer and a Lieutenant Commander in Starfleet, then he was grounded for taking a shuttle to attack Romulan ship without orders. The action was his hatred against Romulans cause they killed his mother and her ship. The hatred was still there. That was a personal issue he had to work out. When he was free from Work Camp Prison he flew his own ship that was money from his mother's account. He had done races and won all lot. This was his territory.

Later he was pulled by a gravity pull to a planet where Starfleet came to save him. The Flaming Addams was destroyed. There was no way for him to retrieve and fix it.

So when he heard Ian being a pilot. Then Ian had the speech about Pilots versus Drivers. Don knew he was the man. He even flew Beta battle bridge in Manual in a tight squeeze too. So he knew he was the best. This was the time to show it.

He was happy he had take Flame-1-go; which was Flame I go and not Flame One Go. It was a cool name. That would had worked for a racing space ship.

He rejoin Starfleet by a little autistic skilled girl who had photographic memory who actually forged his re-application to join up. It was wrong, and it was sweet.

This was going to be great. His heart was feeling the rush, he felt home. "Okay, we will do it my love," he spoked to the ship's computer. "I see what I can get you for a treat if do superb job!"

Manual piloting skills out of the Discovery. It was wonderful.  =/\= Addams here, we ALL got this! I believe in you all! =/\= that was last part was a lie, but confidence was need to be built.

One problem, Don had realized he forgot one thing.  =/\=  Addams to Galloway, Did I forget the order? Sorry, I am bad.  =/\= He would his head against the console if he could. How could he forget the order. This was gonna be on his back. He had done that before on a race. He jumped the gun before it signaled the pilots.
