Ian's normal reaction to undue familiarity would have been to arch an eyebrow, but the idea of a pregnant woman subjected to the stresses required to fly a P-40 absolutely appalled him and his reaction showed in his expression.

"Lieutenant, some of the best pilots I've ever know were women, but Lass, you do not understand the nature of these atmospheric craft. There are no inertia dampeners of any kind, thus ye and thy bairn would be subjected ta up ta 6Gs on a routine basis and I don't think the holodeck safety protocols would protect either of you from injury. I seriously doubt any sane doctor would sign off on your participation in such a program, but before I will allow you into the cockpit of a Tomahawk, I'm goin' ta have ta see authorization by the CMO."

Ian shook off his uneasiness as the discussion had gotten out of hand and he needed to reestablish propriety.

"Sir, barrin' your objection, I will be in the shuttlebay preppin' the Zambezi and organizin' the shuttles should they be needed."

[Bridge]
Ardy nodded, a bit chastised at that thought.  "Obviously, it'd have to wait Á¢â,¬Ëœtil after the baby comes. I don't think I'd fit in such a tight space anyways." She had to mentally stop herself. Old habits died really hard, and she had to account for the baby slowing her down with things now, a tough pill to swallow for someone who always  lived life "in the fast lane" as the saying went. Getting back to the job at hand, she readjusted the coordinates. "We are approaching the planet.

Ian sighed internally, grateful that she'd seen fit to see reason, but that deserved to be acknowledged.

"And on the day you are cleared, I will replicate your Flyin' Tigers uniform myself as you will be more than welcome Lass."

Ian felt happy as he headed for the shuttlebay. He liked to think he'd made a positive impression and may well have found some flying buddies and that was a good day in his view.

Somewhere during this nerdfest, despite her fifth cup of coffee, Kali was trying valiantly to look at the comm frequencies to avoid falling asleep. Sure, Kali could fly things like any average Federation citizen and maybe join an illegal hoverbike circuit every once in awhile, but she was no savant with the kind of stuff they were talking about. She was more privy to the engineering aspects of a ship than its flight ability.

Kali started to wonder if she could just quietly get one of her Ops crewman to take over the station and slip off into the turbolift. "Psst... Crewman..." Schrute? Shroc? Shrok? "Schrock." There it is!

"Take over for me, will you?" She stole his seat before, she could easily un-steal it again. "Evaluation time!"

[Bridge]
Jeb was halfway to the replicator when his boss summoned him back for a second shift on the bridge. He was hungry, but the plucky young crewman wouldn't let that stop him from doing his duty (a favorite word of his).
"Yes, ma'am," he replied, forcing himself to be enthusiastic about an evaluation. He walked fast, continuing to pretend to be happy.
Jebby pulled up the console seat, and monitored comm frequencies (the most boring, routine part of Ops work). Nothing came up. Absolutely nothing.
After a minute of nothing, Jeb noticed his stomach growling again. He was hungry, and bored, the latter feeding into the former. As Jebby thought of that, the word 'feeding' made him even hungrier.
Finally, he hatched a plan for how he would get to the replicator.
Jeb looked up to Kali and asked, "Ma'am, would you like a refill of your coffee?"

Kali said 'evaluation', but really this was her chance to shirk responsibility onto the crewman while she made her escape. Once he sat down and worked the console, she did little more than nod and make noises of approval, all the while inching back for the turbolift.

She was halfway there when he queried. She laughed hollowly. "Oh, don't be silly, Schrock! You're a bonefide crewman, not a yeoman! In fact, I'm just going to do you a great favor and get my coffee myself - bye!" If anything, she started stabbing the button for the turbolift a bit too hard waiting for the damn thing to come back up.

Quote from: Malcolm Adeyemi on July 05, 2018, 10:47:28 PM

[Science Laboratory]

"Quite simple, admiral," Ensign Mrrov hissed for the third time, but Adeyemi still didn't get it.

The holographic model of Zacrim V orbited on the viewer in a gentle circle that threatened to put Adeyemi to sleep. He was not a scientist, never had been. To him, science was the product of a more exotic mystery, God. Why study His works with so much zeal when one could study Him?

He'd passed all kinds of science at the Academy and various training programs and schools, of course. Most of which he'd forgotten. Thank God. But geology and seismography were supposed to be fairly basic.

"When the tectonic plates grind together it produces seismic activity," Mrrov was saying. "You folks would call it an Á¢â,¬Ëœearthquake.'"

That much he knew. Every schoolchild did. Adeyemi went from bored to alert and resentful in a moment. Was the Caitian mocking him?

"Some planets and areas of planets are more prone to activity, naturally." The blue clad science alien went on. "Fault lines, unstable lithospheres, that sort of thing."

"Has Zacrim ever had a sizable quake?" Adeyemi asked. His voice was a strange mixture of accents, between two worlds, as the man was. The outermost layer was good old fashioned King's. Under that was a touch of working class London. But the foundation was deeply flavored with West African creole, a hypnotic and deceptive accent. He hoped he didn't sound bored.

"Not on record, sir." Mrrov said. He turned off the viewer and smiled, showing his considerable incisors. Adeyemi decided he wasn't being mocked. The fellow just enjoyed lecturing.

"So why all the recent seismic activity?"

"That's what we are going to find out."

"Fine." Sitting here was beginning to wear on him. Lectures and figures always did. He wanted action: exploration, discovery. A solution.  What was his Academy wrestling coach had said about him, thirty years ago? Mister Adeyemi, you must learn to pick your spot. A full out attack is the strategy of fools. Mrrov and Inzjana and other scientists like them would help Captain Tekin pick his spot. They sounded ready.

"Fair enough. Thank you for the lesson, ensign. I needed bedrock for the mission."

"Amusing, sir. You learn fast." To his credit, Mrrov didn't feign a laugh but he didn't look bored or roll his eyes, either. He knew how to deal with the brass. That was half the battle, anyway.

"Excuse me, young man." Adeyemi said, and tapped his commbadge. " =/\=Adeyemi to Tekin. Sir, I've been doing research in the lab and I've had as much as I can stand. I'd like to go over the rescue procedures with the security and flight teams. =/\= "

Personal quarters - Science Lab Two

Inzjana was by now used to chopping and changing when it came to quarters aboard a starship, after all, no post was permanent and much to her credit, Inzjana's rabbit was taking it in her stride as well.
Especially seeing as the rabbit's Vulcan Á¢â,¬Ëœmummy' was the only one of her race to still have a pet at her age and a rabbit of all things. But the little fur ball was a gift from her mother and so there was nothing more to say on that matter.

Being born on a starship, Inzjana found that she felt best when she could feel and hear the thrum of the engines and found that other spacers felt the same, although if she was to be honest with herself, her family's estate on the outskirts of Shi'Kahr city where her mother currently resides was Á¢â,¬Ëœagreeable', due largely to the hidden entrance to a large underground cave system where Inzjana spent most of her childhood exploring when her mum thought she was tucked nicely away in her bed asleep.

Even in adulthood, Inzjana never told her mother of her exploits, nor did she ask the reason why a cave system had a hard-light door concealing it. But then, Inzjana's upbringing was far from normal for any Vulcan, being half Romulan and born on a vessel that changed its name and registry more times than anyone on board could count, let alone the highly advanced labs it had, would not be considered a Á¢â,¬Ëœnormal' life by anyone's definition.

Which lead her to her present predicament; trying to remember just where the hell she had been for the past month or so and when did the Discovery get a new science officer, lieutenant T'Prina?

Trying to shake the worry about her memory loss for the last month, Inzjana was cuddling her rabbit which was currently, happily, licking her face and sniffing around. Even though they were on beta shift and therefore Inzjana was no longer on duty, she felt that being alone in her quarters was at present an intolerable situation and therefore she decided that perhaps it would be best to do occupy her mind on in the lab, after all, it was illogical to worry about something you can't change.

Putting the rabbit back in her hutch, Inzjana got undressed and had a sonic shower. Even then she was reminded of being shot, for her shoulder hadn't fully healed yet despite the treatment from the dermal regenerator. The wound just above her left breast and covered the whole area of skin from her left armpit to the base of her neck. It was looking much better though, which reminded her to go to sickbay for another treatment Á¢â,¬"œ when she made the time.

Putting on civilian clothes and refreshing her makeup, Inzjana made her way to science lab two, although her station now as chief science officer was science lab one, she wanted to formerly welcome the new science officer.

The door to the lab whooshed open to reveal Ensign Vinod Rajagopalan chasing a wayward stylus that he seemed completely unable to pick up. Mart'Ang and Inigo Montana were currently attempting to design a new weapon Á¢â,¬"œ typical Klingon Á¢â,¬"œ with Montana joking with the Klingon who seemed to be on the verge of shoving his fist down the young officer's throat and Admiral Adeyemi musing over geological instability Á¢â,¬"œ all-in-all a normal day aboard this ship.

"Admiral" Inzjana stated respectfully, showing more surprise and embarrassment that seeped through to her usually stoic facial expression, after realising that here was a line officer in the lab and she was wearing civilian clothing, being off duty. She suddenly felt self conscious looking down at her Vulcan designed tunic dress, black tights and boots.

"May I be of assistance? I apologise for my attire." Inzjana stated, looking up to the Admiral.

"I'd appreciate some help, ma'am." Adeyemi didn't know her rank, but from the way she spoke and carried herself he took her to be an officer, so extending her that courtesy seemed safe enough. She also was clearly not on duty and yet visiting the laboratory. Definitely an officer, perhaps a highly ranked one. He reminded himself that he had to go through the files on the Discovery--but things had certainly been hectic so far to the point that standard paperwork was going to fall by the wayside.

"I'm Admiral Adeyemi," He said lamely. Everyone on the Discovery knew who he was, but he still felt the need to introduce himself.

"I have to admit that geology and seismology are not my fields," The admiral went on. Any kind of science wasn't, but she didn't need to know that. The last thing he needed again today was a scientist talking down to him. "Anything you could share to help the security and flight teams would be appreciated."

SCIENCE LAB TWO

Inzjana listened to the Admiral explain why he was in the lab but in point of fact, although she knew a lot about subspace physics, xenobiology, biotechnology etc, she her knowledge of geology and seismology wasn't what you would call great, after all, Inzjana would rather explore caves than be interested in what actually caused them, which was only three events anyway, so not challenging enough.

"Indeed Admiral, we have met before, as we were in captivity together on that alien world, I am Lieutenant Inzjana sir," she corrected respectfully. She wasn't surprised really, they only met the once.

Inzjana invited the Admiral to sit at the table in the lab so that they could be more comfortable as she explained about what could be happening to the planet they were currently heading for.

"There are multiple reasons sir, as to what could be causing this planet's instability," Inzjana stated matter-of-factly, "there could simply be shifting of the magnetic poles. The collision of tectonic plates on a global scale. Planetary Volcanism. Excessive underground mining, although this would be highly unlikely. Or the planet's sun could be going through an expansion phase, or mass coronal ejections...There could even be a rogue celestial body orbiting near the planet, the tidal forces of which would definitely cause global seismic instability..." Inzjana took a breather from talking enough to swallow.

"The truth is Admiral, we will simply not know what could be causing the planetary instability until we arrive."

Inzjana didn't know if the Admiral knew anything about science, after all, it wasn't a requirement. But that did't matter to her, science was her religion and she preached it every time an opportunity presented itself. Something her Starfleet Academy lecturer and friend, Professor Andre Offenbach, encouraged in all his students and colleagues alike.

Instead of leaving to go have some fun, Nevir had ended up staying on the bridge, listening to the back and forth with the old and new crew.  Yup... Ian was a little too sharp as an officer, but he was already fitting in nicely.  That would bode well for his long term plans.

When Jaeger announced that they were arriving, he could not believe that time flew that fast.  But here they were, nearly there.  Sighing, he moved past the other officers, and took a seat.

"Steve, get rid of this." he said, tossing the wig to the hologram, and watching as the raptor nodded with it in his mouth and ran off the bridge.

"Okay, to your stations.  Lieutenant, bring us out of warp.  Let's see what we're dealing with." he said, feeling as the Discovery slowed, the streaks of light returning to dots on the viewscreen.  The planet looked drier than last survey, and there were plenty of dots spewing smoke.  The dot they were concerned about was in the center of one of the northern continents... what was just a large mountain was growing and spewing smoke.

"It's a worst condition than we thought.... " he said, a grim tone on his face.  He turned to the science station on the bridge, and though the crewman there was capable, he wanted his top people on this right now.

=/\= "Bridge to Science Lab 2 - Adeyemi and Inzjana, please report to the Bridge."  =/\=

"Miss Reyes?  Hail the colony." he said, not yet aware of her attempts to leave the bridge.

[Shuttlebay]

Ian had completed the pre-flight on the Allegheny and was satisfied that the runabout was ready for operations, whatever that might turn out to mean. He then mustered every Alpha shift flight officer and had them prep the ship's shuttles as well. For a ship so much smaller than the Tempest, Discovery had a respectable fleet of embarked craft. Once he was satisfied that all the shuttles were as ready as they could be, he gathered the flight crews to speak to them.

"As you may or may not have heard, you have a new chief of flight operations and that happens ta be me. Lieutenant Commander Ian Galloway. I have a simple rule fly right and everything is good with me. Now obviously, flyin' right is more than the pilotin', it's maintenance, inspections, and knowin' your bloody bird. I need pilots, not drivers. If you consider havin' the computer do all the work and pushin' buttons when the computer can't do it fer you is flyin', then you and I will have ta have individual conversations.

"Who is a pilot and who is a driver is summat I'll be figurin' out in time as I get ta know you. For now, I'm givin' the lot of you the respect of considerin' you all pilots until you prove otherwise. The main event on today's agenda is largely a mystery. Our part in this dance is stayin' light on the skids and bein' ready ta perform an extensive number of tasks with virtually no warnin' and precious little idea of what is and isn't ground truth.

"Regardless of the task we get assigned, we will succeed because that is what Starfleet does. Failure is nae part of the equation. Now, until we get some direction from the bridge, the lot of you are all on scramble status, that will includes me as well. As I will never ask any of you ta do summat I would nae do myself. Fer the time bein' hang loose here in the shuttle bay and be ready fer whatever comes up. Carry on."

Ian was pleased with the men, women, and beings he saw before him. He hoped that they really were all pilots and not drivers, but now was not the time to be concerned about that. He strolled around the bay introducing himself to the others and concentrated on matching faces to names he'd read on the Cernan while traveling to meet with the Discovery. A new ship and new department members were both a challenge and an opportunity he intended to exploit to the fullest as part of his greater plan to move forward, and he was truly looking forward to this new assignment.

This was just what Adeyemi had needed: someone laying out the truth for him in simple but not condescending terms. She was unusually polite, in his experience, for a Vulcan. Though they seldom meant it, it was more of a way that they talked. Throughout Inzjana's explanation the admiral nodded and listened attentively.

"Thank you," He said honestly. He almost apologized for not having remembered her, but as a flag officer he came into contact with so many different faces in their career, and she knew it.

The doors had just slid open and she had one foot into freedom before the Captain threw an order at her. Kali paused, swore mutely between her teeth, and turned back around for the Comm station. After a heartbeat's worth of button pushing, she connected frequencies to the colony planet side and used her best customer service voice.

=/\= Zacrim V, this is the USS Discovery. We are inbound to your colony's location for immediate evac. Please respond. =/\=

At first, she was sure someone had picked up, but the call fell through in a smattering of static. Her nose wrinkling, Kali flipped for the planet's entire frequency channels just in case.

=/\=Zacrim V, this is the USS Discovery. We're having a communications issue and are broadcasting on all available channels. Please respond. =/\=

Again, something sounded like it was trying to establish connection, but it all devolved into static. Kali was fully in her seat now and turned around. "Captain, I'm getting too much feedback for a clear channel. It's probably from all the seismic activity down there and it's definitely putting their comm towers on the fritz. I've got a couple of solutions to fix that, but that'll require someone to head down planet side."

Don stood there with the others watching and observing Lieutenant Commander Galloway going about meeting his crew. They all departed to do their duties. Don had gone to one the roundabout RD-4,  no name yet (well there is one possible next paragraph). He climbed in sat down in the pilot's seat.

"Yeah, Flame-I-go," he said to the air. Okay it was a nick name to the ship Don gave the ship. Cause he had lost his beloved racing space ship. The adventure Flaming Addams.  It was more talking to the ship itself. "That is good...we be able to manual fly you. It was the only way to fly," he said as he was pressing buttons to check the system.

Flicking the switch to check the power readings. "Old school too. Everything is manual for me, I should have been using a data pad to help," he stared at the data pad on the co-pilot seat. He was staring at it as he was thinking about his mother. It was she taught him very young how to fly. "Man I miss you mum," he muttered under his breath.

"Looks like that's us," Adeyemi said with a nod. "I'll see you up there, lieutenant."

"It would appear so sir," Inzjana stated whilst rising from her seat and straightening her tunic-dress, musing over the human penchant for stating the blatantly obvious. Just then realizing that she was in her civvies, not a very appropriate form of clothing to be coming on the bridge with, adding, "By your leave admiral?"

Weighing the odds to whether she had time to return to her quarters to change and the need for her to be on the bridge. Inzjana decided that the logical course of action was simply to forgo the change of outfit and ascertain, if any, urgency that might be derided from the planet's colonial population that might be in effect. After all, one of the highest Vulcan edicts was to respect all life in all it's forms - in point of fact - it was used as a symbol for their entire civilization, known as the IDIC.

Once on the bridge, Inzjana felt even more self conscious of not being in uniform and she chided herself for such an emotional thought, seeing that the ship's roster was in beta rotation.

"I apologise for my attire captain," Inzjana stated coming on to the bridge and making her way to science station one where Lieutenant T'Prina was currently residing "Welcome to the Discovery Lieutenant, it will be agreeable to serve with you."

Inzjana waited for the officer to vacate the terminal and was wondering whether it was appropriate to call T'Prina 'ma'am' due to her fellow science officer being a smidgen above her on the ranking scale.
