Kirok

Several weeks had passed since the end of the war with the Gorn as well as the memorial service that followed.  It had also been several weeks since the Discovery had been relaunched from drydock after it's latest repairs.   She and her crew were currently on their way to the Romulan Empire on a mission of mercy.

Kirok sat in the central seat.  He had kept more to himself over the past few weeks.  Meditating more than usual in order to help him deal with the recent losses.

Despite this, Kirok was well grommed and focused on the task at hand.  In fact, he was looking forward to this mission of mercy.  He and the crew needed it to help remind them of the good they could do in the universe.

=/\=Kirok to Engineering.  How is the new warp core handling?  Do we have any concerns before we enter the Neutral Zone?=/\= Kirok said after tapping his comebadge.

"Seika!  Don't touch that!"  Archangel snapped, pulling her daughter out of one of the maintenance crawlways.  She seemed to be getting into everything these days and it was starting to annoy her.  She had no idea what had gotten into her recently.

Once her daughter was once again in her office, Archangel moved back to the MSD, checking over the readings on their new warp core.  Every core that their own behaviour, their own personality complete with all its little quirks and necessities.  It always took a little time to understand a new one.

She sighed as she heard the communication come in from the bridge.  They were heading towards Romulus.  Her homeworld.  She had no idea why they were heading there, but it had her on edge.  Bracing herself against the MSD, she made every effort to keep her tone even and calm.

"Engineering here.  I'm not reading any problems with the core.  It's not up to maximum efficiency yet, but we're working on it."

Ask any engineer, and they'd probably tell you that the sounds of a humming starship are some of the sweetest in the known space.  These sounds were made even sweeter to Gabriel's ear, due to the fact that the Discovery had spent so much time cooped up in drydock.  They'd taken a hell of a beating during the Gorn incursion, and it made Gabe happy to hear the constant thrum of the warp core once again.

Looking up as Chief Engineer T'Koris entered Main from her office, Gabriel gave her a smile and a nod in greeting.  The Romulan looked a bit at wits-end, likely from her daughter, who continued to try and push boundaries, as little children were wont to do, or possibly from the destination of the ship's current mission:  Romulan space.  Gabe didn't know what kind of relationship she had with her own people, since she'd never mentioned it.  Oh well.  He supposed if he needed to know, he would.

"Hullo, ma'am," Gabriel said from the station he was working.  He'd been going over the reports handed in from the night shift, and everyone had been keeping a close eye on the new core.  "The readings from the transfer grid all show normal, so there's some good news for your morning."

Archangel brought up a new set of readings, quickly running a projection in order to analyse the likely effects of going to maximum warp.  So far, no adverse readings.

"I'm not reading any problems with going to maximum warp, sir.  You can proceed when ready."

"Oh, you've just earned your pay for the week, Ensign," Archangel replied, pinching the bridge of her nose.  She was definitely not looking forward to this mission.  If they were lucky, she would be able to hide out in Engineering and not have to meet any of the Romulans.  Even better, her father might not get himself involved.

Revek Tre'el

With their typical whoosh, the 'lift doors slid open and Revek stepped out onto the bridge. Though he wouldn't show it, the Cardassian was happy with the repairs. It's nice to not worry about being showered with sparks and bits of LCARS console shards. Taking his seat next to the Captain, Revek handed the Vulcan a PADD. "All the humanitarian supplies are accounted for and situated in cargo bay 1, Sir." Revek paused before adding, "Though I think Lieutenant Novaar wouldn't mind some of it going missing." It was about as close to a joke as the Cardassian had ever come.

As far as Orion's went, Novaar wasn't that bad in Revek's opinion. At least she's always professional... The last Orion crewman that Revek had worked with had a proclivity to flirt with any and everyone, which drove the Cardassian mad while they were on duty together. With an inward sigh he repeated the thought to himself.

"Sounds like a plan," Gabriel grinned.  "I think I'll put in for a raise - double or nothing."  Continuing to monitor the ship's systems, Gabe glanced over toward the Chief Engineer's office.  "You know," he said quietly, "when I was a little underfoot in my mother's office at the Proxima shipyards, she would often give me puzzles to keep me occupied.  Sometimes they were physical things - match this piece here, or what have you...or sometimes, she'd have interactive holopuzzles programmed."  He laughed softly as he tapped his padd.  "I think it's the only reason she didn't go grey until later in life."

Archangel looked up at Ensign Arthur, giving a half smile.  Normally, she wouldn't have given it a second thought, but she was considering the young officer to be a friend, especially since Seika had taken such a liking to him.

"I've tried.  She knows I'm nervous, even if she's not old enough to know why.  Getting underfoot is just her way of trying to distract me."

=/\=Acknowledged.  Please let us know if we begin to exceed maximum efficiency.  Kirok out=/\= Kirok replied.  Then he tapped his combadge and ended the comlink.

"Ms. Hayo, please send work to the Romulus.  Let them know we will be entering the Neutral Zone shortly.  Also give them our ETA" he said.

"Aye, Sir" Hayo replied.  She set about the task quickly.  "Mr. Beggon, please increase to maximum warp" Kirok added.  "Aye, Sir" Beggon replied.

"Thank you, Mr. Tre'el" Kirok replied.  He picked at the data padd.  He trusted the Cardassian to have done his job and thus gave it only a cursory glance.

Novaar looked up from her station.  She knew the comment was rhetorical.  So, she simply offered the man a smirk and then returned to her work.

"When we reach Romulus, we will no doubt need to send down an away team.  Have you given any thought as to whom you will take with you?" he asked as he turned toward Revek.  He placed the data padd down on the arm rest of his chair.

Gabe nodded, giving his Chief Engineer a sympathetic look.  He considered asking T'Koris what she was nervous about, and might have even done so, had they not been in an official setting.  As it was, he chose the better part of valor, not wanting to appear prying or nosy.

"Well," he said, moving to another terminal, "if it makes you feel any better, I solemnly swear to do my best not to blow up the warp core this time."  He nodded to another readout.  "Speaking of which, the antimatter containment fields are holding strong.  Everything seems to be reading green."  Setting his padd down, Gabe cracked his knuckles with a boyish grin.  "Looks to me like we're ready to cook."

Ser Conley

[Flight Control Office]

Crew evaluations, navigational sensors reports, shuttle maintenance reports, and reading up on the mission current objective, Ser felt his mind slow turning into mush.  So Ser stood up, form his desk, and stretched out his legs.   Then he walked over to the replicator.

"Earl Grey, milk and sugar.", it didn't happen as much now, but every now and then, Ser would marvel over the simple thing like the replicator.  The thought that given enough time, this machine could manufacture most everything you want still amazed Ser.

He grabbed his cup from the replicator, and moved back towards his desk.   Pressing his badge along the way.

Then he tapped his combadge and said =/\=Beggon here.  We are ramping up to maximum warp and proceeding on course to Romulus.  All systems are reading normal, Mr. Conley=/\=.

Archangel couldn't help but smile at the junior engineer as he spoke.  There was something about his good mood and enthusiasm that was contagious, thankfully.  She took a deep breath, trying to concentrate on her duty.

"An intact core at the end of this mission would be most appreciated, Mr Arthur.  I think Commander Kirok's is getting fed up of having to sign for new warp cores.  Let's do him a favour."   She listened to the ship as the humming changed tone, the ship beginning to speed up to warp as they headed for the neutral zone.  A muscle in her jaw twitched.

"Let's keep our eyes on the readouts.  I'd rather prevent accidents than have to clean up after one."
