Kyle listened as everyone voiced their concerns for him going over. When it settled down, he cleared his throat.

"Hmm, Hmm. Listen. I appreciate everyone's concern but being a nut for older ships coupled with the fact I've never been on an Antares-class, I'm pulling Captain's prerogative, and going over. I've assigned a Security Officer to each of the bigger groups." he added as he looked over at D'Angelo. "If you 'd like to assign an additional person to join the Doctors, feel free." He than started around the table.

"Kaz. I was hoping your Trill side would be able to help us here." he said as he faced over to where Mackenzie was sitting. "And forgive me Ensign. Your stature always causes me to forget your true age. I'm sure you'd probably know a thing or two about the ship as well. Now the scans we have show that Life Support and the gravity are the only two systems still functioning although the gravity has been going in and out. I figured we can deal with it until Kaz is able to get it settled. It's sporadic so it could stay working the whole time or we could find ourselves floating around a bit. Either way, I'm not calling for any EVA suits." He sat back in his seat for a brief second before continuing. "Also. My inner children have been at war since we got here. The Captain in me wants to see that Bridge but the old Engineer in me wants to see the Engine Room. So. Commander Tekin. I think you and I will switch places. You handle the Bridge team and I'll take Engineering. I want everyone ready to depart in thirty minutes in Transporter Room Two. Any other questions?"

"Oh. Before we go. Commander Tekin. I believe you had an announcement to make?"

Briefing Room

Jane nodded, knowing full well this was the best she was going to get.

"Yes Captain." She replied, taking a note to organize a security detachment to accompany them. She was not happy, but at least she had made her concerns known. "Also Captain, I would recommend that the entire away team go armed. Type 2's should be sufficient with the security personnel armed with compressed phaser rifles." She said.

The Bajoran actually had to remind himself not to smirk, or show any sign of snickering, but he had to admit.. the timed comment was almost perfect.  Oh, she was in for some serious surprises real soon.  The timing was just whatever the Captain dictated.  He was going to mention science's findings on the atmosphere inside, but the Captain was already speaking again.

"Shame.. and I was using that to get her to work." he said in response, quietly so she could hear.

He nodded in response.  He'll take the Bridge, then.  There were just some situations where the best you can do is remind the Captain of what the regulations are, and note his objection in the mission log.  Captains had their prerogative to do what they wanted, as long as they didn't do anything to endanger the ship, the crew, or the Federation.  It was certainly a habit of the more daring Captains, at least.  Certainly the biggest names in Starfleet.

He was slightly caught off guard when Briggs put him on the spot with the personnel change.  He was only the Second Officer.. he expected if anything for Wu to handle it... but the Captain asked for him.  Then again, he was the one to formally recommend her.

"Aye sir.  As you know we've had a recent shuffle of personnel following our last mission, including the departure of our Chief of Operations.  Now I'm sure on a ship this small, nothing is normally kept secret.  I can guess we all know by now some detail of Petty Officer Reyes's experiences.  The command staff took the time to review her report from the mission, and to be perfectly honest, despite the actions of myself and Dr. Black to save the crew, it was within my expert opinion that without Reyes, this mission would have ended much differently."

Nevir took the time to glance at the young crewman, and then back to the Captain.  "Computer, make note of the following record: On the recommendation of the Second Officer, and on approval of the Captain.  Petty Officer Kali Reyes will be heading the Operations department." he said, giving the computer the change to chirp in affirmation.

=/\= Acknowledged.  The Chief of Operations of the USS Discovery is now Petty Officer Kali Reyes =/\=

In case there was confusion to this, Nevir had already done the research.  "There is a provision within Starfleet that allows for a non-commissioned crewman holding at least the rank of Petty Officer to serve as a Department Head at the discretion of the Captain.  And to be candid, I think I speak for most when I say I want to see what you are capable of, Kali.  Congratulations."  he said, finishing the formal announcement.

Jane smiled, not having been on board during the previous mission, she knew for a PO to be recommended as department chief, they must have done something extraordinary.

"Congratulations Ms Reyes." She said.

"Of course Captain. This class of starship was in service for a long time. I have two past hosts with experience with these ships. They were work horses. I better make sure I pack a hammer. That's probably the best fix for the grav generator." She flashed a mischievous smile, but she knew she wasn't exaggerating.

Leela took a sip of her tea as Tekin announced the news. She raised her cup slightly in a toasting fashion. "Congrats Chief." She said with a slight pause.

"I don't think any extra security is needed for a sickbay. Life scans come back with nothing, correct? What makes you think that we'll even need security, much less for the Medical crew."

"I understand, Doctor. But I just want everyone else to be as safe as all of you want me to be." Kyle answered just before Mackenzie spoke up.

"And to answer yer question Captain I have been on those ships a few times. I wonder if this ship has those cryogenic freezer bed things? Some of them did. And if the life support is still working, then they would be too. And ya might not find any life signs if they're working either."

Kyle nodded. "Thank you, Mister Mackenzie." he said as he turned back to Cottle. "And there's another reason, Doc." he added. "We may just yet find someone over there." he said in a positive voice. Kyle hadn't known Cottle long, but he respected the man and didn't want him to think Kyle was being a smart ass.

"Wonderful. So we'll have at least some knowledge with us over there. That's better then going in blind. And if you believe a hammer will help, by all means, bring it." Briggs replied.

"Anyone else?" Kyle asked.

"Yes Captain. I would recommend that the entire away team go armed. Type 2's should be sufficient with the security personnel armed with compressed phaser rifles." She said.

"Completely agree with you, Ensign. When we break up here, everyone will make their way by the armory for you to issue the weapons." He stood and straightened his uniform blouse. "Okay. Let's gather what gear is needed, draw weapons and meet in Transporter Room Two in fifteen minutes. Dismissed."

As they all stood and began filing out, Kyle made his way over to Kali. He extended his hand as he approached.

"Congratulations Petty Officer Reyes. It's well deserved. And I'm sure you'll do an amazing job." he said. Oh. And remind me when we're finished with the Hargraves. I hear you have some wonderful stories to tell." he teasingly added with a wink.

Kali Reyes

[Conference Room]

To avoid the blush rising up her neck at the congratulations, Kali cleared her throat and tried to shrug it off with an easy grin. Praise wasn't exactly what fed her growing up and she was almost out of her element. Still, there was a gleam in her eyes that enjoyed it. It felt like whatever hard work she had done was starting to pay off.

The meeting came to its conclusion and Kali realized she had not offered input for her own department. "I'll just... get my hands on one of the consoles. Rosters, logs - anything that can explain what the hell happened to it." And if there was anything she was good at, it was some good ol' data retrieval, no matter how corrupted it got.

That reminded her about the anti-zombie kit she wanted to compile before the whole promotion bit. Deciding on an experimental dilithium-powered cattle prod or an old fashioned machete she'll have to fight with the replicator over, Kali mindlessly picked up her PADD from the floor as people filed out for preparation.

Then he mentioned the stories - the word she now permanently associated with 'the event'. Kali swallowed hard at his wink and, for a brief moment, he was a medical ensign again.

"I dunno, there's a long list of people waiting to hear all about their alternate selves, and I don't easily play favorites - even for the Captain," she recovered cheekily. "Make it worth my while if you want to cut to the front of the line."

With the meeting dismissed, Nevir decided to take his time.  Especially considering he just had a relatively new officer on the ship promoted to a high position.  He was honestly just waiting to pull over and pestered with why.  Instead, he stood back and enjoyed the banter between her and the Captain.  It was definitely something interesting to watch.  She seemed downright insulted of Kyle's rank in her little reality.

"This is a big promotion for a couple of reasons.  I'll have to work with you to get your senior officer accesses.  And this will mean a change in quarters.  For right now, this is your chance to prove to yourself as well as us of what you can do.  I wasn't sweetening you when I said you saved the ship and crew.  You were the essential variable that I couldn't figure out.  The link that was missing.  And I have a feeling that you might not make a good Security Chief, but you will make a good Operations Chief.  If anything, I think this means you're part of my team to the Bridge."

"Very Well." he said, then added the "Sir". He didn't know just how much a stickler the Captain was for the formalities, but he wasn't really caring either way. "If there is anyone, they've survived a lot longer than I'd have given them credit for. Then again, people do adapt to the scenario." he said, thinking of how some people had survived the Dominion war. However, he didn't personally like the idea of cryo tubes, it seemed to be unlikely that those were there. Then again he could always be wrong.

[Sickbay]

He stood up and left the room with everyone else, going down to sickbay and grabbing a standard away team kit, medical tricorder, and a phaser. The phaser wasn't usual, but the Captain had said to draw weapons, so draw them he would.

[Transporter Room]

He entered the room about five minutes before the prescribed time, and watited for the rest of the team to arrive, going to a wall terminal and looking up ships of the time. Maybe there would be something for him to look at interesting. Or maybe the ship had been looted by raiders long ago and now it was just the hulk he found floating around.

He looked at the Phaser Sassa indicated and motioned to his own. "I do not know, but it's better to have them then not." he said. They may be going on a mission of mercy, but those could go south quickly if the conditions were right. "Though the scans show nothing wrong, I don't trust scans as far as I can throw them. Cloaked devices can always be there." he said, thinking of the subspace mines of the Jem'Haddar. He wasn't much help... but this blunt manner was his usual bedside manner, and it never curried favor with his patients, or his commanders.

"I see the long standing tradition of hazing the new promotes haven't died," she quipped dryly. "Nice speech, SO. You'll make a fine one if you didn't hear the congrats from me yet." And she meant it.

Her unspoken questions were at least answered. Aside from her work ethic, she hadn't been sure what prompted the swift promotion to Petty Officer, let alone Chief of an entire department. But if the brass actually bumped heads together and was unanimous, who was she to look a gift horse in the mouth?

That just left the jealous ones like Yates. But she had a contingency plan for that. All those shiny new authorization codes leads right to a nice airlock. And all of the words of encouragement really just boiled down to one thing.

New quarters. Maybe she can finally squirrel a papasan in. The rest she could do in spades. No pressure. "Haven't disappointed anyone yet. Kind of want to keep that record spotless if it's all the same to you," she replied confidently.

Certainly, Lennox managed to make a quick turnaround with his phaser. He knew exactly how long it would have taken him down to the armory and then back up to the transporter room. He aimed for the weapons cupboard that he would have sorted out, knowing that they would have been checked and doubled checked. Not to take anything away from Jane, who had most likely had done the same thing.

Kyan Mackenzie

:: USS Discovery| Crew Quarters ::

Kyan was happy. Kyan was... VERY... happy. Today, instead of sitting at the helm, or reading the navigational reports, or one of the other mundane things one usually did on a starship when there was nothing better to do between point A and B, he was actually going on an away mission! An away mission to a spooky old derelict ship. This right here? This is what he signed up for! Whistling as he worked, the little Miran packed his gear for the trip.

"Ahh sure and we'll probably be needin the extra power cells too won't we?" he asked rhetorically as she stuffed them into their proper place in his backpack. "But which blade though? Mek'leth or jejtaj?" Kyan pondered the decision as he considered both weapons sitting before him, sharp and glimmering under the lighting. "Hmm..." he wondered aloud as the doors whisked open and his cabin mate shuffled in.

"Ahh! Allistair.... do you suppose the now I ought to be takin me Mek'leth on the away mission...or the jejtaj?"

Alastair considered the layout before his diminutive cabin mate without so much as a blink. Truth told, he'd seen the array of weaponry that Kyan kept on hand many times. The little Miran pilot was positively obsessed with keeping it all in good working order. He was always sharpening blades or cleaning and checking his various beam weapons. He'd found it a little odd at first, but now it was just the routine. Also, Kyan collected various whiskeys and beverages from around the quadrant, but didn't imbibe much... and shared. So there was that dynamic to consider....and preserve.

"Wellst, why not both of them aye? Ya never know." Alastair offered, tossing his jacket on the desk chair and making for the liquor shelf. "And have we any of the 2033 left?"

Kyan dismissed the last question as he pondered the first, finally deciding. "Yeah, yer probably right. Can never be too prepared, as Lugh teaches us. Very well. Mek'leth AND jejtaj is is then." Kyan sheathed the mek'leth, which was  sized for him, on his back and affixed the jejtaj on his pack. He then holstered his two 2275 type two phasers on either side of his shoulder holster and put his jacket back on before finally grabbing his current model type 2 phaser, the standard issue nowadays, and placing it in the holster at his side.

Alastair by this time had found the 2033 and poured himself a snifter of the aromatic Scotch. He took a seat on the couch while Kyan looked around the room to see if there were anything he'd forgotten. Satisfied that he was ready and had everything he needed, he waved at his friend and made for the doors.

"Alright then." he said over his shoulder. "If these grups get me killed off, you can have the lot of it, and please make offerings to Morrigu for me."

"Uh huh...." Alastair mumbled over his glass. "I'll see you when you get back. Have a good time on the derelict."

With that, Kyan exited the cabin and set off toward the transporter room, where the rest of the away team would be drawing weapons and preparing for the mission. Kyan made his way to the transporter room at a brisk clip and was soon walking through the hissing double doors, where he met his fellow crew members getting ready.

"Aye Merry Met all of you he offered cheerfully as the doors closed behind him and he walked over to the pad. It's a fine day for an adventure such as this isn't it!?"

"Interesting choice of words, Doctor.  Were you correcting me on my semantics or actually referring to the fact that while they would potentially serve as a deterrent for people just knowing that we possess them and have the ability to fire at them, you hope we don't have to put that theory to the test so to speak?" Jane nodded in response.

"Aye Captain." She said. Getting up and exited the Briefing room. She made her way straight Back to the Amory where she assembled her security team and issued phasers to the Away team. With a type 2 phaser and a tricorder at her waist and holding a compressed phaser rifle in her hands, she led her team to the transporter room.

Assigning two members of the security team to each of the groups. She went over to where the Doctor was.

"Doctor. These are Petty Officers T'Parr and Dawson. They will be accompanying you to sickbay. They won't get in the way but they are responsible for your safety." Jane said, introducing the two crewmen.

Kyle Briggs

[Briefing Room]

Everyone else had left the room and a he watched Kali leave, Kyle turned toward Tekin. "I' think we'll be okay with her in charge. She's a bit informal at times and likes to crack wise but with the right training, she'll be a hell of an officer. And I'm tasking you with said training." he added. "I have no doubt in my mind that you can file those rough edges right out of her. So. If you have no more arguments about me getting off ship for a bit, let's go get our weapons and meet our merry band of heroes in the Transporter Room." he said with a smile. Kyle and Tekin had served together several times and he had always liked the young man. Briggs wasn't aware just how much Nevir knew about what he had to go through to get him assigned to the Discovery, but in Kyle's mind, it was worth every ounce of it. He had one hell of a Science Officer and SO.

[Transporter Room]

Kyle entered the Transporter Room and surveyed the already gathered faces. They were only waiting in a few that still had some time. He saw Doctor Cottle eyeing his Security detailed as if he were wishing they'd disappear. He smiled as he started walking around and checking on everyone and their gear. He noticed a bulge under Mackenzie's jacket. "You prepared there, Mister Mackenzie?" Kyle asked with a knowing grin. Kyle had read the man's files and had noticed his fondness for weapons. As Kyle enjoyed learning about and using new weapons, he decided he would approach Kyan after this mission if all went well.

"Looking good, everyone. Just a few more arrivals and we'll start beaming over. Any last minute questions or thoughts?" he asked.

Kali Reyes

[Transporter Room]

Everyone got weapons so she grabbed all the scavenger gear she could grab down at Ops first. And given her shiny new promotion, she quickly took advantage of the extra data crystals and a few extra chips that may or not be illegal in Federation space, she wasn't sure. It's been awhile since she's checked the extranet comm buoys on hacking contraband.

Bag strap over her shoulder and a scanner on her hip, she took her place next to D'Angelo, Mackenzie, and Tekin. She was woefully low on weaponry, but by what Mackenzie looked like he was packing in his jacket, Kali thought they were more than prepared for any surprises - space zombies included.

She still had her cattle-prod though.

Kali shrugged and shook her head. "Easy peasy, Captain."
