Captain's Log

We're off again. After a brief layover in order to do a personnel swap, we're headed out to see what kind of trouble we can get into this time. While on the base, I was able to hear a few stories that had been relayed from person to person that had come from Petty Officer Reyes. Apparently, the alien that had joined with her on our last mission had caused her to have hallucinations. Thankfully, our new Counselor, Crewman Bixox, was able to separate the two and we completed the mission with no harm done. It was pretty basic and low key. Those types of missions are good and all but I think we need a little more to keep us on our toes.

[Personal Quarters - Senior Officers]

"Young lady... you are stalling." the Bajoran said with a smile, as he laid on his couch.  The two were talking about the big talk on the ship: Kali's adventure.  He was taken back by her sudden hug when he first... well... met her.  And as he was the officer assigned to extract the alien from Counselor Bixox, he was able to take an interest in this unusual tale.  Kali didn't really know it, but hearing how Briggs was an ensign and apparently blacklisted made him grimace.  It seemed that their situations were reversed in her vision.

Still.... first officer suddenly seemed within reach again.  And the more drive he had to clear his name for such things.  If he could make first officer... it would make bringing the family back together a lot easier for the two of them.

Ruthie, of course, was spending her asking question after question... even those she asked before.  She had gotten a lot brighter.  It was almost hard to tell that this young girl was a prisoner for a majority of her young life.  But thats why Nevir wanted to take her with him... if anyone knew about surviving the Cardassians, it was the Bajorans.  He had an insight that Hrafn wouldn't have known.

Though right now she should be studying and doing her homework.

The call from Briggs made him sigh, and he got up.  "You're lucky, Ruthie... but have this done when I come back, okay?  I would hate to have to tell Sassa to cancel later today." he said brushing himself off and heading out to the Bridge.

[Conference Room]

Everything sounded rather routine, and Nevir was oddly curious about the old ship.  Honestly, though he wasn't sure why he was going to Engineering of all places.  Sickbay would make a little more sense, but the Bridge is where he honestly wanted to be.  Still.. orders are orders and... wait a minute.  Who was leading the bridge team?!

"Captain, in the XO's absence, I have to object.  Why not have Wu lead the Bridge team, or even myself.  We can't have you on board a derelict ship with unknowns around." he said, giving the Captain the look of 'you die and I'm as good as dead'.

He sighted Kali Reyes, and gave a small smile.  He, Wu, and the Captain had had a talk while they were at base... and there was a reason why she was now here.  If the Captain didn't mention it, he would, as was planned.

[Deck 15/Ops]

The last incident was behind her. She made sure Doctor Cottle knew this because she wasn't sticking around longer than she should in Sickbay. When she was finally clear, she didn't expect Yates and Anderson to bombard their shared quarters with holographic pop rockets and a PADD that said she was promoted to Petty Officer Third Class. She couldn't pinpoint what earned the rank and when she wasn't bragging about it to piss off Yates, she was secretly developing an inferiority complex to cope with her new responsibilities.

Now her friends answered to her, though it didn't stop Yates from questioning how the hell she managed it in such a short time.

"Charisma," she had said with a wicked grin. "And a copious amount of it." Yates made a face, walked away, and probably wished Kali was bumped another few ranks so she could finally move out.

The insecurity continued to eat at her as she finished off next shift's roster. While waiting for the confirmation to come in from Lt. Winters, the ship's comm sang throughout the deck.

Quote from: Kyle Briggs

"Dismissed, PO Reyes," Winters said. He walked past her and took her PADD before she could open her mouth to respond. PO. That was gonna take some getting used to.

[Conference Room]

Kali betrayed little nervousness sitting down with the rest of them. She felt like she should be back down on the Ops Deck chasing tardy Ensigns than share in the direction of the next mission. Her face was even free of oil or whatever muck she usually got into in maintenance. Anderson did her hair this morning so she looked the part of a Petty Officer. It still unnerved her.

Quote from: Kyle Briggs

Her stylus flickered in her fingers as she tried to edge away the nervousness. Was she allowed to speak? They were going into an extremely old ship with their Captain heading the away team. What if he fell through a rusted metal grate and into a vat of acid? What if he was chomped on by space zombies? Kali's expression twisted from horror to courage when she opened her mouth to protest, but Tekin wonderfully answered for her.

Kali viciously nodded and then gave Tekin a shaky grin back. It was a bit hard associating this Tekin from the XO in her hallucination, but there are moments where they'd align and made her wonder. His recent promotion only helped move the process along. At the very least, he didn't seem unwelcoming as she initially thought. That kind of lifted her spirits about the future on the Discovery.

But to the matter at hand. The Captain needed a reason for her siding with Tekin - a good logical reason why this wasn't a good idea.

The words tumbled out of her mouth faster than she could revise them. "Space zombies." It was probably the stupidest thing she had ever said as Petty Officer, but she didn't really want to work under her zombified Captain aboard the Flying Dutchman. She liked him handsome and healthy and not dead, thanks.

[Sickbay]

At least with her current co-pilot, Aretah always had something to do. It was better than attempting to ambush stray crew members into sitting still for their psych evaluations. Honestly, it was just a small, on the record, chat; not the end of the world. Oh well, at least she could work on trying to construct a home for her guest that was outside her head.

[Bridge]

The young woman was crunching numbers on a console in Sickbay when the call rang out for her and the Chief of Medical to report to the Conference room.  If she was human she might sigh or roll her eyes, but the half Vulcan-half Betazoid did none of that. Her Vulcan part simply saved and closed her work, while the Betazoid glanced around Sickbay to ensure everything there was alright without her.

Hardly being the superior Officer for her department, Aretah was content to sit silent at first. Commander Nevir did have a good point; even if Ms. Reyes' rejoinder was more amusing than helpful. "Perhaps not zombies, but the atmosphere? Do you have data from the scan's, Captain? And is the ship's gravitational system still online?" Two very important questions. If either of the answers were no, then they would have to suit up for the mission; and it would increase the danger to the Captain's safety.

Leela looked to Reyes, before the Captain replied. "I have some experience with this technology. If the life support and gravitational systems are malfunctioning; it shouldn't be to difficult to setup a remote link and bring them back online." She added to Kali's statement while looking to the captain for guidance.

[Sickbay]

Klabax was finishing up a physical. With the recent... events aboard the Discovery, medical procedure required that all members of the ship's complement undergo a new physical. Unfortunately, he'd had to cite that regulation more than once in order to get people into sickbay. He was just finishing up with a particularly grumpy Tellarite engineer, who was difficult, even for a Tellarite.

Klabax had eventually just told him to shut up, sit down, and learn to deal with it. Though for most  species that would be rude, it impressed a matter of respect onto the tellarite. If you weren't rude, you were being rude according to their philosophy. Klabax and Tellarites fit in well with each other, unlike most species. Klabax was rude, annoying, with no bedside manner and for all intents and purposes had the personality of a bastard.

He got a message from the Captain broadcast to the rest of the ship.

Klabax tapped his commbadge. =/\= This is Cottle, Acknowledged.=/\=

He turned to the Engineer, pointing over his shoulder with his thumb. "Out." he said, going to clean up sickbay. The Tellarite gave him a piggish grin, smiling. "Gladly." the man said, before leaving back to his job.

Klabax cleaned up his work, and left the room.

[Conference Room]

"Fifty year old medical tech... might as well still be Leeches and blades." he muttered. "Medical tech has gone quite a ways, not sure how useful the computer systems will be for medical records."

He looked at the diagrams of the ship, but he wasn't an engineer... he couldn't make heads or tails of it. He might recognize the ship if he saw it, but not from these. It seemed to him that Engineers went out of their way to make diagrams and models as convoluted and confusing as possible, and as useless as possible for everyone else.

Sassa's Quarters

Sassa looked up at the chronometer, she had been preparing another language lesson for Ruthie.  The girl was coming along admirably and it was a pleasure to teach her.  Right now though she had duty to attend to so she stood up, straightened her lapel pin and tugged down her tunic and then put in the chair she'd been sitting on then walked to the turbolift.

As she walked she heard the internal comms message from the Captain

Quote

She stepped out of the turbolift on the Bridge, nodded formally to Mr. Wu then crossed to the Conference Room, the door was open so she walked in.

Quote

Sassa nodded at the Captain then looked to Commander Tekin.

"Looks like Ms. Falleg-Grix's Vulcan lesson may have to be postponed this afternoon!" she said with a wry smile.

"That position, Mr Scott, would not only be unavailing but also undignified."

[Bridge]

Armory - Deck 14

Jane was in the middle of checking the phasers, making sure they were charged, cleaned and ready for use, when the call came in. She turned to the duty Chief.

"Take over please Chief." She said.

Upon receiving the nod in reply, Jane replaced the type 3 she had been checking and headed up to the Bridge.

Bridge

Jane exited the turbolift, acknowledged the XO with a nod and headed to the briefing room.

"Captain. I have to agree with Commander Tekin. However I cannot order you not to go but I would request that you allow me to bring a full security team with us. After all we don't know what happened on that ship, anything could be there waiting for us." Jane spoke politely, knowing she was the junior person here.

[Armory - Deck 14]

Lennox had pulled himself away from the armory as he had received the call. He was quick to respond as Lennox carefully placed the phasers he had been checking, away and safely locked up before making his way to the briefing room.

[Briefing room]

Exiting the turbolift, the Scotsman straightened up before giving a curt nod towards the XO, as he would have saluted those above him prior to when he left the military. Spying an empty seat, Lennox quickly went for it and sat down. His eyes picked up who was already here, eyes lingering on Kali before focusing in on Kyle.

He sat quietly, attentively as he listened to what was happening with an eyebrow arched at Jane's suggestion. Lennox certainly did not shy away from a task, though, he was keen in finding out what he had missed.

Kyle listened as everyone voiced their concerns for him going over. When it settled down, he cleared his throat.

"Hmm, Hmm. Listen. I appreciate everyone's concern but being a nut for older ships coupled with the fact I've never been on an Antares-class, I'm pulling Captain's prerogative, and going over. I've assigned a Security Officer to each of the bigger groups." he added as he looked over at D'Angelo. "If you 'd like to assign an additional person to join the Doctors, feel free." He than started around the table.

"Kaz. I was hoping your Trill side would be able to help us here." he said as he faced over to where Mackenzie was sitting. "And forgive me Ensign. Your stature always causes me to forget your true age. I'm sure you'd probably know a thing or two about the ship as well. Now the scans we have show that Life Support and the gravity are the only two systems still functioning although the gravity has been going in and out. I figured we can deal with it until Kaz is able to get it settled. It's sporadic so it could stay working the whole time or we could find ourselves floating around a bit. Either way, I'm not calling for any EVA suits." He sat back in his seat for a brief second before continuing. "Also. My inner children have been at war since we got here. The Captain in me wants to see that Bridge but the old Engineer in me wants to see the Engine Room. So. Commander Tekin. I think you and I will switch places. You handle the Bridge team and I'll take Engineering. I want everyone ready to depart in thirty minutes in Transporter Room Two. Any other questions?"

"Oh. Before we go. Commander Tekin. I believe you had an announcement to make?"

The Bajoran actually had to remind himself not to smirk, or show any sign of snickering, but he had to admit.. the timed comment was almost perfect.  Oh, she was in for some serious surprises real soon.  The timing was just whatever the Captain dictated.  He was going to mention science's findings on the atmosphere inside, but the Captain was already speaking again.

Sassa nodded at the Captain then looked to Commander Tekin.

"Looks like Ms. Falleg-Grix's Vulcan lesson may have to be postponed this afternoon!" she said with a wry smile.

"Shame.. and I was using that to get her to work." he said in response, quietly so she could hear.

"Oh. Before we go. Commander Tekin. I believe you had an announcement to make?"

He nodded in response.  He'll take the Bridge, then.  There were just some situations where the best you can do is remind the Captain of what the regulations are, and note his objection in the mission log.  Captains had their prerogative to do what they wanted, as long as they didn't do anything to endanger the ship, the crew, or the Federation.  It was certainly a habit of the more daring Captains, at least.  Certainly the biggest names in Starfleet.

He was slightly caught off guard when Briggs put him on the spot with the personnel change.  He was only the Second Officer.. he expected if anything for Wu to handle it... but the Captain asked for him.  Then again, he was the one to formally recommend her.

"Aye sir.  As you know we've had a recent shuffle of personnel following our last mission, including the departure of our Chief of Operations.  Now I'm sure on a ship this small, nothing is normally kept secret.  I can guess we all know by now some detail of Petty Officer Reyes's experiences.  The command staff took the time to review her report from the mission, and to be perfectly honest, despite the actions of myself and Dr. Black to save the crew, it was within my expert opinion that without Reyes, this mission would have ended much differently."

Nevir took the time to glance at the young crewman, and then back to the Captain.  "Computer, make note of the following record: On the recommendation of the Second Officer, and on approval of the Captain.  Petty Officer Kali Reyes will be heading the Operations department." he said, giving the computer the change to chirp in affirmation.

=/\= Acknowledged.  The Chief of Operations of the USS Discovery is now Petty Officer Kali Reyes =/\=

In case there was confusion to this, Nevir had already done the research.  "There is a provision within Starfleet that allows for a non-commissioned crewman holding at least the rank of Petty Officer to serve as a Department Head at the discretion of the Captain.  And to be candid, I think I speak for most when I say I want to see what you are capable of, Kali.  Congratulations."  he said, finishing the formal announcement.

Speaking was obviously not her forte today, so Kali gracefully cowed and refocused on her PADD full of the mission's dossier and what little information they had on a fifty year old Antares-class ship. She felt a pair of eyes on her, looked up, and then gave Len a sheepish grin in greeting. Sometimes she dreamed of him dressed in science blues, but she was glad he was back in his standard gold. Just like that her nervousness ebbed away at his presence.

Kali had been trying to recall the various tools she had back in her quarters that could double as a zombie-repelling kit when silence fell to Tekin. She looked up in a moment of distraction before returning to the PADD. The Captain was switching to Engineering's team now? Probably for the best. Kali couldn't hold a phaser the right way let alone-

The PADD fell from stiffened fingers and bounced off her lap until it clattered uselessly to the floor. She blinked a couple times at him as she tried to rewind the speech. Her mouth opened slightly when it all finally processed, but couldn't find the words. What just happened?!

"I..." Oh, finally she got a sound out. Department Head?! The gaping wound of insecurity just opened up into a chasm of nope. Sure she knew the rosters and every magnetic bolt on the ship by heart, but she was in charge now. This wasn't a little temporary jaunt on the Captain's chair but an actual position delegating the entire starship.

And they gave it to her?!

She squelched every bit of fear down the back of her throat and managed to look as chill as possible. No big. This isn't a big deal. "Wow, um... gosh. Okay." Such elegance, Kali. She gave them a grin and a half-salute. "I won't let you down, Cap. Commander. Thanks. Really!" Hopefully they didn't promote her based on oratory skills.

[Conference Room]

[Briefing Room]

Klabax nodded to the captain's override. He didn't agree with the Captain's idea, but he let the issue drop. He wasn't fond of the captain's suggestion that the Doctors needed more security, and did challenge that one. "I don't think any extra security is needed for a sickbay." he stated, bluntly and 'matter-of-factly'. "Life scans come back with nothing, correct? What makes you think that we'll even need security, much less for the Medical crew.

He did nod in appreciation for Reyes promotion. He wasn't big on Rank, but he did recognize the accomplishment that it was for her, especially as a petty officer, to be a department head. She'd earned it too, especially with the work she'd done last mission in keeping them alive.

[Holodeck Program KyMack023]

The Miran sighed. "Sure and always when the foolie gets good, the grups come calling." he said. "I've gotta go to a meeting. Can the two of you come back later on?"

"It is......"

"possible." finished the other Bynar.

"Ok." Kyan nodded happily. "Then I'll go see what the boss wants and we will meet back here later. Computer, Save Program and exit."

The dead planet fell away and was replaced by the gold grid lines again.

"See ya!" Kyan offered as he darted through the double doors and into the corridor.

[Conference Room]

Kyan didn't have any questions yet, although he did find it interesting that the captain was to go on the away mission. In his experience that was a rarity. Apparently Starfleet had some rules about that. But then they had rules and regulations for everything so. Apparently other people were not as indifferent to the Captain going on the mission as he was, because several of them spoke up. Of course they didn't change Briggs' mind, and the grup continued.

"Oh. Before we go. Commander Tekin. I believe you had an announcement to make?"

Tekin made his announcement, followed by Reyes' awkward acceptance.

"Congratulations sure!" Kyan offered, before returning to business. "And to answer yer question Captain I have been on those ships a few times." Such as the time many of them arrived at his home planet to deposit the teachers and doctors and all manner of other federation grups to "help" the Mirans. But Kyan dismissed the residual anger he still felt at the Federation for annexing his planet more than a hundred and fifty years ago. As the grups liked to say, the past was the past.

"I wonder if this ship has those cryogenic freezer bed things? Some of them did. And if the life support is still working, then they would be too. And ya might not find any life signs if they're working either."

"Shame.. and I was using that to get her to work." he said in response, quietly so she could hear.

Ready Room

Equally quietly after the announcement had been made, Sassa said "I'm sure if time permits we can do some pronunciation work, however..."  she pressed some buttons on her PADD.  "There is some written work for her to practice with in the meantime!  Can't have our little linguist being lazy now can we?!"

Turning to Kali she gave her a beaming smile.  "Congratulations, well deserved."

"That position, Mr Scott, would not only be unavailing but also undignified."
