Captain's Log

The Discovery has been dispatched to the Narada Solar System to transport some very special Diplomats to a negotiation that will be between three planets in that system, Tauri, Crucis and Vorti. Apparently, there is an asteroid field located right in the middle of all three planets and they all believe that they have the mining rights to the field. Since each culture refuses to allow the other to travel through their space, let alone step foot on their planet, the planet Melian, in the next system over, has agreed to host these negotiations. The hardest part for us is, they won't even travel together. We've had to deliver the Vorti Representatives first. Then we taxied over the Diplomats from Crucis.  We beamed the Tauri party aboard and got them settled into quarters yesterday. Now we're nine days away from Melian. On the bright side, we were ordered to just deliver them to the negotiation table. There was nothing said about sticking around to take them back home. As we were leaving Tauri, our scanners picked up what read as an inert spatial anomaly directly in the course we had planned to take. I ordered Ops and Science to maintain a watchful eye on it in case anything changed. So far, there's nothing to suggest we need to avoid it and add time to our travels. I guess we'll find out in about ten minutes when we get to it.

[Deck Four - Junior Quarters, Ensign Kyle Briggs][Sickbay]

He walked in and found a few of the Gamma shift folks finishing up their last minute jobs and getting ready to head out.

"Morning T'Ren. Bruce. Quite night?" he asked.

"Not bad. Just had a couple guys that got into a fight brought in by Security so we could treat them before they were taken to the Brig." answered Ensign Bruce Tanner. He and Kyle had graduated together and were lucky enough to be posted here on the Discovery together.

"Man. you guys see all the action. Well. I guess I better get things set up before the Chief arrives." Kyle replied. "You two enjoy your day."

The others left and Kyle went about getting Sickbay set up the way the Chief Medical Officer liked it.

[Deck 2 - Senior Officer Quarters]

"Good morning sweetie." Nevir said, kissing the top of Ruthie's head as he headed for the mirror.  He stretched himself as he adjusted his uniform, keeping the crispness of the red as he had been.  A quick check to his earring, and he walked over to the replicator.

"Bajoran tea, hot, hasaphrat, eggs benedicts and Bajoran bacon." he said, as the computer created the half-human, half-bajoran hybrid breakfast.  He took his plate down to the table with Ruthie, and started to eat.

"Don't you snicker at me young lady, you're the one who introduced me to them." he said with a grin, as his daughter laughed at seeing her papa eating human food.  He picked up his PADD to check the update from the bridge.

"Well.. since everything looks normal... and you don't have horns... I'd say that anomaly didn't do anything bad.  Alright, daddy has to report to the bridge.  Make sure you do your studies, and I'll take you to the holodeck when I get off, alright?" he said, taking his now empty plate and putting it back in the replicator.  He gave Ruthie a hug goodbye, and then headed out of the room.

[Bridge]

The red-uniformed Bajoran exited the turbolift as the watch officer stood up from the big chair.  With a greeting, Nevir took his report, and then let the night crew go.

"Computer, begin Alpha shift." he said, as the light levels on the bridge increased, and Nevir took his place in the Captain's chair.  The computer recognized him and the alpha shift officers took their places.

"Helm, verify ETA, and send it to the Captain.  And I don't want to run our luck.. make sure there are no residual anomalies on the path."

"Aye Commander."

Nevir sat back.  Thank the Prophets their transport mission was finally over.

Captain Leela Kaz, Commanding Officer

[Deck 2: Captain's Quarters]

Leela awoke to the non-descript voice of the Dicovery's computer. "The time is now 0530 hours. The time is now 0530 hours and 30 seconds. The computer seemed to mock the Trill with it's incessant reminder that it was ridiculously early. "Alright, alright. I'm awake!" She said as if the computer was her mother attempting to drag her from the bed by her ankle. As she sat up and moved from the bed the wheels in her mind started to ponder the myriad of things that occupied her 'to do' list.

"Computer, Vulcan Tea blend Kaz 218. Hot." The computer gave two beeps indicating that her beverage was ready. She moved from her bedroom into the living room and wrapped her robe around her on her way towards the replicator. As she cradled the hot beverage in her hand she took the first sip. The first one was always her favorite. With an audible sigh of relief and the first sip taken she was ready to tackle her day. Her desk was organized, with everything housed in an appropriate place. PADDs were stacked neatly in the upper left corner. It wasn't quite right, Leela had many endearing qualities but her organizational skills certainly weren't on that list. Her work space was, typically described as, unkempt on a good day. In the upper right corner was a small frame encapsulating a certificate of sorts. She read the words. 'To Doctor Daniel Briggs in honour of your years of service and dedication to our community.' She shrugged off the idiosyncrasies and moved to the business of the day.

Locating a PADD she turned the device on. "Computer, please download the latest status reports from Gamma shift onto the PADD." With two beeps the computer acknowledged her requests. [/I]"Download complete."[/I] The ships computer confirmed.

Leela sat down at the desk with her team in her left hand and the PADD lightly grasped in the right. Within a few sips she had skimmed the reports. There was mention of some minor repairs following a trip through a harmless anomaly but nothing that required her immediate attention or follow-up.

"Computer, begin log...

Captains Log,
We remain on course to Melian, just eight more days and we can move on from this fiasco. I have never seen a group of diplomats and negotiators so unwilling to talk to each other or even share the same space. All of their requests and demands are going to drive me insane, however, I guess that's irrelevant. Just eight more days. From the mission brief I received we will not be required to stick around and I certainly will spare no hast in getting us out of this god forsaken star system. Although, I must admit, I find the idea of the image of all of these diplomats sitting at one table to be comical. Perhaps we should stick around. We could setup a video feed and let the crew watch live from the lounge. Ensign Drummond introduced me to popcorn last week, a human concoction, I believe this would be the perfect instance to replicate some. Other than our difficult passengers, life aboard the Discovery is running at its usual pace. Engineering tells me that they are taking the opportunity to scrub the dilithium storage chambers and operations seems to be having a field day updating several holo emitters on our holodecks. Once we make our trip to Melian, I am going to request to explore a new type J nebula that appeared on long range sensors last week. We just happen to be in the neighborhood.

End Log"

She set the PADD down and moved back into the bedroom to get herself ready for another day. With her red uniform on, her hair doing everything right and a cup of Vulcan tea she was ready to conquer the day.

[Bridge 0550]

Leela arrived to the bridge early, still nursing her cup of tea. There was a magical 15 minutes on a starship. That time as the night team trickled off duty and Alpha shift streamed onto watch. The ship was a quiet place. Most of the day the ship was a buzz of activity and noise. The conversations on the bridge were a constant hum that buried into the background of everyday life. She always strived to arrive at least fifteen minutes early to relieve the night watch. This gave her those few and precious quiet moments each day. Ever since taking command this had been her secret. A secret held by Leela and the night watch commander alone. He never bulked at leaving a few minutes early and Leela got her precious moments of peace on the bridge.

This morning, however, was different. The executive officer had arrived ahead of her and begun the day watch. Leela sighed slightly, those few precious moments that she took refuge in were lost. This is going to be a terrible, terrible day. She thought as she moved across the bridge and quickly saw the executive officer residing in her seat. Horrible day, maybe I should just give up and go back to bed. Leela thought. She shot the young Bajoran man a glare. "Commander, let's get on with this. I'm ready to get this ambassador off of our ship, so we can move on with our lives." She commented, setting her tea beside the center seat. "And, if you don't mind, Commander. I would like my chair back?" She commented, fighting the urge to roll her eyes.

Leela often had wondered why they made her a Captain. Her temperament and ability to be diplomatic certainly left a lot to be desired. Her former host, Juval, oozed charisma and Leela had her own form. But people genuinely liked Juval however, Leela had a list of people who refused to speak to her.

"Ah Lieutenant." She said to the night watch commander as she made her way towards the center seat. "Anything to report?" She asked.

"No ma'am." The Lieutenant in gold replied. "We're still on course for Melian at warp 6.2. All systems are operating within established parameters."

"Very well. I'll have to have a talk with the engine room. Maybe if we bump to 7.5 we can get this ambassador off of our ship and move on with our lives." Leela acknowledged the report and let out a slight chuckle at her joke. It was said in jest but she found herself wondering if she could convince the good chief to push the engines a little harder. She certainly wouldn't have minded finishing this mission early. "You're relieved, lieutenant. We'll let you off the hook early." The Trill chuckled and gave the officer a soft slap to the shoulder. With an eager smile he left the bridge. Poor guy. No one like the night watch. She thought to herself.

"Computer, begin day watch." With her orders a series of automated orders cascaded through the ship. The illumination on the bridge was brought to maximum and she took a seat in the center chair.

Lennox woke up to a blinding headache, perhaps it was that last bottle of scotch that he had managed to sneak down his hatchet before he had gone to sleep. It was strange that he had been affected so much, and was led to believe that someone was spiking his scotch. Though, he had to keep it under wraps as he looked at himself in the mirror, running a hand down his ginger stubble.

It would remain there until it finally turned into a proper beard, something that wasn't a common sight for the lieutenant. He began to get ready, hoping to snag the corner seat of the mess hall.

Of course, his plan altered across the few minutes that it took him to get ready. He checked that his uniform was all in order and neat before making his way out of his quarters.

[Bridge]

The Scotsman walked onto the bridge, just as the bridge began to light up. His eyes squinted, having been accustomed to the darkness of the night shift as he slowed his approach to the captain.

[Personal Quarters:  CMO Sukal]

Sukal had already been up for an hour, but was already attired for duty complete with all the things needing to be done on his PADD.  Today, Ensign Kyle Briggs was responsible for making sure Sickbay was ready.  The man was rather decent at his job, and Sukal really didn't expect any problems.  There had been a couple of fights according to the medical log, but nothing serious.  Fights were a bit out of place, but that was not really his concern...not really.  It did make Sukal think about talking to the Captain about the stress crew might be enduring.  Fights aboard a Federation starship were not normal.  Oh, they happened from time to time, but they were usually the rare oddity rather than the norm.

"Something to think about later," Sukal thought aloud as he left his quarters for Sickbay...a healthy breakfast and exercise already completed for the morning.

It wasn't long before he made his way to his domain right on time.  Sukal was always rather punctual...early even.  One could almost set time to how his routine would go.

"Good morning, Kyle," Sukal greeted the man as he entered.  It was something most of the crew seemed to still be getting used to with him.  Sukal was half-Vulcan, and half-Betazoid, but one almost never saw the Vulcan side of him.  Oh, he could be stern, strict, and calm, but most of the time he was compassionate, professional, kind, and a bit less formal than most officers that were Department Heads.  It went with his bedside manner...something also the crew had trouble with a times.  He supposed it had to do with him having pointed ears and smiling at them.

"I saw we had two fights last night on Gamma, but nothing else serious.  Anything you need to bring to my attention?" Sukal continued as he made his way over to take the medical coat he usually wore over his uniform.
"'The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably.' Those words were uttered by Judge Aaron Satie as wisdom and warning. The first time any man's freedom is trodden on, we're all damaged."  ~Captain Jean-Luc Picard:  2367

[Quarters Lt. Sassa - Chief Flight Control Officer]

The Vulcan sat up in bed and stretched.  "Just another day at the office..." she thought to herself and went through her ablutions finally pinning her commbadge on the red uniform.

She replicated herself some Vulcan tea, two slices of wholemeal toast, buttered and a lightly boiled egg.  She never ate that much at breakfast but deemed it sensible to have something when she knew from experience that she might be on duty longer than the regulation hours...especially if that darn new cadet insisted on turning up 30 mins late.  Now she'd checked with the CMO to make sure that it wasn't anything that was medical like he had to have some sort of infusion at a certain time and that meant he would be late by 30 mins to shift... she would have simply adjusted the rota to fit around that.  Nope, this was just tardiness.  She would have to have a word.

Recycling her dishes she stood and tugged on her tunic to straighten it then walked to the turbolift, deciding she would give the cadet one last chance since she'd given him a dressing down the day before.

[Bridge]

Sassa stepped out onto the Bridge and to her amazement, although save one slanted brow twitching up a few centimetres, she didn't show it, the cadet in question was actually there.

"Good to see you there Cadet Wainthrop, had enough of that vile stuff they call coffee then?!"

"Aye Ma'am, remembered to set the alarm on my chronometer too, must turn down the volume a little however as apparently it woke the cadets 3 doors away too.  No harm done however, they are on Alpha shift too, other than they now know my sordid secret..."

"Sordid secret?!"

"Aye, that I really like the 1970s Earth band...ABBA"

"I'm not familiar, I'm assuming this is a bad thing?!"

"Well... it's deemed not erm... manly!"

"If you enjoy it, and it gets you out of bed, I don't see that it's going to harm anyone! Anyhow, report?"

"Nothing really to report Ma'am... nice and clear out there until or unless Sciences tell me otherwise.  We are on course for Melian at warp 6.2. All systems are operating within established parameters, though I'm sure I heard the Captain mention something about bumping that up to warp 7.5 but it's not been executed as yet."

"Thank you cadet, you are relieved here.  Ensign Ford needs a hand down in the Shuttlebay checking them over.  Join him there for the remainder of your shift."

"Aye Ma'am"

Sassa sat and checked over the systems, everything panned out.

"Do you wish to increase speed Ma'am?" she asked of the Captain.

Katcha had been up for an hour going through her regular Tai Chi. She dressed in the gold uniform, making she her newly won JG's pip was on display. She finished her cup of grape juice and left her quarters heading for the Bridge, making sure she was early.

She stepped out of the turbolift 10 minutes early and headed to the Ops station at the front. Relieving the previous officer, she ran through a full check of the systems before turning to the Captain.

"Ships operations optimal Captain, though we have had numerous requests from the various diplomats for extras that would require substantial resources. They are hold pending your approval." She reported, not taking her eyes of the various readouts.

How did he miss the Captain's entrance??  The Bajoran turned red and stood up immediately.  "Sorry M'am, just trying to get a start on the day." he said, as he quickly took his position to her right.  He sighed... everyone had off days, and normally Nevir was good about judging Leela's mood.  However... this mission was perhaps the most annoying.

The Bajoran sighed.  "Probably half of the computer core and a third of the crew as their personal servants, no doubt." he said, leaning back.  These ambassadors were some of the worst he ever experienced in his career, and the only time he wished that he was anywhere else.  "And of course, they still want your personal attention for every little detail.  I've been tempted to tell them to suck it up.  Shall I handle this latest batch of issues?"

[Bridge]

How did he miss the Captain's entrance??  The Bajoran turned red and stood up immediately.  "Sorry M'am, just trying to get a start on the day." he said, as he quickly took his position to her right.  He sighed... everyone had off days, and normally Nevir was good about judging Leela's mood.  However... this mission was perhaps the most annoying.

Katcha smirked slightly.

"I wish it was only a third Commander!" She replied, rather heavily on the irony, as she concentrated on the readouts.

[Science lab 1 -  Lt/Chief Of Science]

"The degree of separation in these samples is inconsistent with past readings." Pardek was not speaking to anyone in particular  but rather verbally giving notes on the experiment in front of her. She tapped the side of the stilled centrifuge. The empty plastic sound it made didn't give any clue as to the reason.  The Romulan made an additional note to recalibrate the device. Her PADD beeped in acknowledgement and made the appropriate adjustment to her work notes.

It had been a relatively long day,  though she'd had the fortune of being able to delegate the other science officers to other parts of the ship. Peace and quiet aided in experimentation,  she'd always found.

She glanced at the time. Perhaps she'd go rotate the cultures she was growing in a few moments...  After she finished tinkering with her equipment.
