Kirok offered the Russian Flight Control Officer a silent nod.  It was a hard message to get across to his crew.  But one they needed to hear.

[Bridge]

"I think that would be wise, Mr. Nevir.  In fact, I have an assignment for the Science Department.  The Wells ship seems to prefer avoiding Ion Storms.  I would like to see if our Science Department can someone figure out a way to exploit that weakness.  Specifically at times when an Ion Storm may be too far away to offer us any protection" Kirok said.

"In addition, I would like for someone from the Medical Department to be posted on the Bridge at all times.  He or she can obviously move to Sickbay if needed" the half Vulcan said.  Then he turned back to Filitov and looked up the Sec/Tac.

"And after we reach our next destination, we will be adding some fighters to our hanger.  With that addition, we will need to star staffing the TIC.  Any questions?" he asked the group in general.

Katcha looked back at the Admiral in some surprise but nodded in understanding.

"Vill ve be getting additional crew to man ze fighters and TIC? Or vill ve need to staff it from ze existing crew?" She asked. "I believe zat Ensign Mackenzie has fighter experience and vould be a good choice to fly one of zem. Ve also have several others who have TIC experience. We coulf handle it if ve cannot get more staff." She replied after a few seconds thought.

Nevir had remained silent throughout this whole thing, choosing to let the Captain finish.  As he confirmed that Tekin could take over, the Bajoran nodded.  Welp... now that it was official, he would have to wear red.  Great.

At least it was something he could tell his daughter later on.

But the end of the meeting, he kept his eyes on the two science officer.. neither of which had followed his instructions.  And somehow, he had to choose one of them to lead the smaller science department.  Come to think of it.. did either of them even realize he was their superior?

With the Admiral's final words, it was time for Nevir to speak, in his opinion.

"My promotion does mean that we have a gap in the command structure.  In case some of you have forgotten, I'm the Chief Science Officer... or I was.  We can't afford to find a replacement to come aboard, so I'll be looking over the Science department for a suitable replacement.  I would prefer officers who are able to follow orders." he said, looking to the two science officers on the bridge.

"It is all the more important that we remain alert and cohesive.  Ignorance will mean that you or your friends will not survive.  I don't want to be the hardass, but the truth is that we need everyone at their best, which means my expectations have to be high."

"That also means when this meeting is done, I need to speak with the Science department." he said, shaking his head.

[bridge]

Mr. Nevir's point was very clear to Kinley. Now that he was the XO, the science department didn't have anyone to manage it. Which meant that either she or Jettis probably were going to be the Chief Science Officer. A task which, especially considering what was going on, seemed especially daunting for the young scientist. They wouldn't choose a newbie still fresh from the Academy, would they? Though if she had to, she would definitely accept the job.  The lives of her friends and crew members would be at risk if she didn't do her best.

Admiral Kirok's idea about the Ion storms encountered in the past intrigued her. She was no engineer, by any standard, but if she could find a way to  mimic and integrate the ionic particles similar to the ones found in the nebula, that would possibly create a sort of buffer that would protect the Discovery  from the Wells ship. It was a long shot, but perhaps the best way of keeping the crew safe. She would have to tell her idea to the others in the coming meeting.

We're in Starfleet here. Weird is part of the job description.

Klabax sauntered onto the bridge behind his boss. The meeting was well under way, but he decided he'd catch up later. He walked into formation with the other people around him, looking around. He didn't have much of an expression on his face, but the emotion he gave off was clear disdain that they both had to gather and secondly he'd been made late.

He heard Admiral Kirok's last statement and tightened visibly. He calmed down in a moment, but his muscles were quite tense. He'd had a flashback to another ship he'd served on. The USS Eagle. He had served as the medical officer assigned to the bridge during time of conflict during a Dominion boarding effort. The bridge crew had mostly been wiped out. He realized he was staring off into space, and tried to refocus. He just hoped nobody here got the wave of shock he'd sent out. His facial expression had remained unchanged, but he was definitely on edge. His hand slid down to his tricorder, sitting with him on his hip in a combat sling as it always did when he was on duty. He waited for his orders, keeping his mouth shut lest he open his mouth and, to use the Human phrase, insert his foot.

[Bridge]

Jettis' attention shifted as Tekin began speaking. If Jettis were to be completely honest, his words were only half-heard, but that wasn't to say the El-Aurian didn't get the point Tekin was trying to get across. And he looked far from vacant. "Yessir." He murmured shortly. Words were running around in his head, but none of them reached his lips. He should give Tekin a break, after all; as much of a first impression Jett was making, he actually liked Tekin. Had the Commanding officer been lax about who he chose, and the severity of their situation, he would have been a lot more pissed. As it was, the weaker officers couldn't be placed outside of their comfort zone - much less in a position of power. The less assertive ones did their job well where they already were, and likely had no ambition to advance anywhom. And he fully stood by that, regardless of if that meant he himself couldn't receive the position.

Jettis nodded again, silently, if only to offer confirmation he was indeed thinking, rather than just remaining silent out of shyness, or lack of attentiveness. Of course, the first solution that came to his mind was to alter the Discovery to mimic an Ion storm. But that would only work so long as they were out of sight. But there had to be a reason that such an advanced ship would avoid something like an Ion storm. Some sort of weakness stemming from the way the ship was built. If he could find and exploit it, it could give them an instant upper hand.
He glanced over at Kinley, who also looked like she was thinking. He resolved to ask her opinion on it after the meeting. Although, he wasn't sure how competitive she was for this spot, but hopefully she was willing. This wasn't a race for promotion, this was a race to protect the lives of everyone on this ship.

Mahak was silent throughout the captain's announcement and the resulting discussion. This was all news to him, and so in his mind it was more important to keep silent and absorb what was being said And after all, Chief Reyes was present and his superior, undoubtedly she could fill in the admiral with whatever was needed from the Operations department.

The admiral was talking about casualties. A sobering thought, after the announcements. But it was part of the job. Mahak resovled to do his well. Section 31 was not to be underestimated.

"The bridge," Kintiss replied. "I need to bring ssssomeone from the department." The reason as to why escaped him. Perhaps it was a large-scale away mission or they were being dropped into a dangerous environment and he might have to co-ordinate his new team. It might be a good excuse to see what they were capable of. He'd taken a few moments to read their files and was impressed by what he saw, particularly in the case of Dr. Cottle.

It didn't take long to reach the Bridge, where Kintiss offered a short apology for tardiness.

[Bridge]

Kintiss barely concealed an irritated sigh. Of course it was too much to expect Kirok to not mention his personal vendetta, and now it seemed he was foistering it on the rest of the crew. This he would just have to put up with for now.

For a moment, Kintiss considered volunteering himself, but he had a feeling Kirok wouldn't appreciate his view on things during this mission. Still, it was best to give the rest of his team the option as well.

"I'll bring it up in Ssssickbay," he said.

[Bridge]

Kirok offered the Medical Officers a nod when they finally entered the room.  "Thank you Dr. Kintiss" Kirok replied.  Then he turned his attention to Filitov.

Katcha looked back at the Admiral in some surprise but nodded in understanding.

"Good questions, Ms. Filitov.  Initially, we will be sourcing staff from our existing crew and cross training as needed.  Which reminds me, if any of you have interest in Sec/Tac or Flight Control, please see Mr. Marshall and Ms. Filitov respectively" Kirok replied.

"Now, if there are no other questions it is time to give out some assignments.  We will be heading to the Badlands.  Specifically to an old hide out of Star Fleet Intelligence.  I hope there, we will find some additional information about our enemies" the half Vulcan added.

"That is all for now.  Dismissed" Kirok said.  Then he offered them a slight, but respectful bow.

Kali chewed the inside of her lip the more Kirok continued. More department changes for the Badlands and she'll have to start asking around to staff the TIC. First things first, she had to put herself on the clock today.

She turned to Mahak and playfully poked him on the chest. "Got a lot to do today. Crew shake up, your impending promotion if I get shot out of airlock, pretty much a regular day, really." And with him being so Vulcan-y, things were going to go a lot faster with his efficiency.

And the new kids. Oh, boy was this going to be a riot. She tilted her head at Garrison and Jyur. "Ops is especially keeping a close eye on you two! Show who's boss to the top!"

Nevir nodded as the Admiral ended the meeting, and immediately turned to whoever was currently at that station.

"Helm, set course for the Badlands, Warp 6." he said, before turning back.

"Science department with the exception of Ensign Samara, meet me in the main Science lab in ten minutes.  Samara, you have the bridge station.  The rest of you, I want a full personnel record including the department chain of command before the end of shift." he said, before turning towards the others, and then leaving the bridge.  For now Kirok should be able to handle things here, he needed to take care of his own department.

Well... all of that decorating, making his office feel comfortable to work in, and now it would be for naught.  Sure, he was getting a bigger office... but his passions were for the sciences.  They always were.  For now, he could handle the switch later.  He had some officers to talk to.

=/\= "Garrison, Jyur, and Michaels, please report to the CSO office.  Tekin out." =/\= he said, sitting back.  This... this was bound to get interesting.

Jettis looked over at Kali, quirking an eyebrow with an almost-invisible smirk. "Noted. I'll keep that in mind." He commented. After they were dismissed, Jettis turned to look over at Kinley - only to be interrupted again. Closing his mouth, he uttered an 'aye, sir', and resolving to talk to her the moment he got a break.
Turning back to Kali, he nodded again with a smile. "Congrats, again, on your promotion. Try not to kill us all." He quipped. "But really, you'll do fine." He added a moment later, softer. Deciding he had nothing else to do on the bridge, he nodded to Mahak, excused himself, and headed to the Turbolift.

"Deck four," He commented to the computer, standing patiently as he arrived at his destination.

Just as he had almost reached the lab, he got Tekin's message.
He confirmed, rounding the corner to reach the lab. Stepping inside, he rang the bell to the CSO's office, waiting for the go-ahead to enter.

Katcha got up from her seat and nodded in response to Nevir's orders.

"Aye Kommander." She replied, relieving the duty helm operator and setting course for the Badlands.

She set the course and engaged the engines at Warp 6. She hoped they would not have to go too far in as the Discovery was not nearly manoeuvrable enough to avoid the plasma storms. She then turned to confirm the course and speed to find that Nevir had left the Bridge.

"Ve are on course for ze Badlands Admiral. Varp 6. Do you have an exact location for zis base as it would not be vise to take zis ship too deep into ze Badlands. Ve do not have ze manoeuvrability to nawigate ze plasma storms if zey get too dense." She reported.

"I am unfamiliar with the method you mentioned," Mahak said. He knew the tale, to be sure. He had, after all, worked among humans for a long time. "But how that fairy tale applies to the Technology Information Center I do not know."

It was true that the TIC needed an update, and maintenance, especially if they were heading into trouble.

"Perhaps we should...slip into something more comfortable?" Mahak asked. "And by that, I do mean a standard Starfleet toolkit with harness."

It was a lame joke, but quite a feat for him. Perhaps Reyes's jocularity was rubbing off.

She nearly tripped on a step herding him into the turbolift. "W-what?" All she could do was blink, her bottom jaw open in shock, and when her second wind came back she was ready to double over in laughter.

"Holy hell! I can't with you - twice in a day? My poor heart!" Kali regained her footing and jumped into the turbolift with a wry grin. "I'm a very bad influence on you. Bad, bad, bad."

Indicative New Database Evaluator Redistribution Exit Logistics and Labeled Arranger. CINDERELLA. Worked every night the past month to get the bugs out. Let me show you!"

Mahak did not comment on the chief's seemingly endless jokes, but nevertheless he did not appear to be offended, either.

"It would be agreeable to see your new fighter technology, Chief. On the Starbase Columbus I spent time in the Flight Control department. I have over a thousand hours spent in small craft over the course of my career." He said. "What does CINDERELLA do, exactly? A sorting program for what?"
