As Thompson and some of the others came back to the bridge, Scott turned to his XO

" Commander, take the tactical station, load quantum torpedo's. We're going to scuttle the Albatross. "

Reece entered the bridge holding the data chip.

"Aye sir." he said before tossing the chip to Lee. "Armstrong. Analyse the data on that chip when you get a moment. Klein swears blind he saw a ship after we escaped the field. We just a second look at it."

He took the station and primed a spread of Quantum Torpedoes.

"Shame to see a good ship go to waste in such a way." He remarked as he fired.

They watched as several blue bolts slammed into various structural weak points in the Galaxy carcass. The ship exploded violently, internal explosions finishing what the Quantum's could not.

"Albatross is gone sir. I suggest we go as well, before those anomalies find their way through the Asteroid field.

Scott sighed. Another ship lost and still no closer to finding out why someone would attack them.

" Get us out of here Alan, warp 6 "

The Discovery wasted no time in leaping to warp, as she did the anomalies expanded, tearing the majority of the asteroid field to pieces.

[4 hours later]

The Discovery was on route back to starbase, and most of the crew was working on the data they recovered from the Albatross, however the XO and Scott had been asked by Lee to come to the science lab. Both men walked in and saw Lee hard at work.

" What have you got for us Mr Armstrong? "

Lee had been using the science lab to improve his chances of finding something on the data chip commander Thompson had sent him. He had been trying every trick he could think of, and now he thought he had something. And it was unnerving.

" Commander, Captain. As you know, crewmen Klein was sure he saw something when the runabout was heading back to us. At first it seemed like there was nothing there, but using our lsb i've spotted something.

Lee brought up the image on the main screen, even with the enhancements it was hard to see.

" Do you see here, it's hard to make out, but it looks like the profile of a small ship. "

Lee shook his head.

" No, that's the best we have commander. Now usually this would be useless, but look here. "

He pointed to a small section of the ships outline, what was there was barely visible.

" The spatial distortion? That's caused by the ships impulse exhaust being expelled. Now I ran a scan on it, and we have a partial match for that particular reading.

Just one. The ship that escaped from cold station 12. "

Scott stared intently at the screen. Could this small speck on the viewer be the same ship? He leaned over the console, his brow furrowed as he sighed.

" It looks like our raider just got a lot more adventurous. "

Adolph Klein

Paperwork. Klein hated it. Especially after a long away mission, to say nothing of those tense moments during their escape from the asteroid field. But Starfleet thrived on bureaucracy. Klein idly wondered how much space all the paperwork, just on this ship, would take up without electronic storage. But after logging and documenting the circumstances in which the runabout Higgins was damaged, he had another report to fill out.

This one would be more simple at least. A priority repair request to the engineering department to have the starboard nacelle repaired. He did patch in a copy of the request to his supervisor Lieutenant Christopher, hoping he'd push it along. Otherwise a request from one Crewman Klein, as opposed to someone important, was likely to get lost in the shuffle.

Klein examined the damaged warp nacelle before letting out a noise that was a half sigh, half yawn. Not exactly a sterling impression on his first away mission to bring back a damaged shuttle, but for the life of him he couldn't think of anything else he could have done in that situation. The damage ran the entire length of the nacelle in one jagged gash as if someone had taken a knife and slashed it quite crudely. Minor repairs he could handle, and would have gladly done so being this was his fault. But he was hardly a warp engine engineer and repairing it was beyond him.

Grumbling a curse he finally left the shuttlebay and headed for the turbolift. With a brief detour to feed himself, which he did with as much mechanical precision as if he were replacing warp plasma as he didn't even recall what he ate, he headed to his station on the bridge.

Kyle Briggs

After the small crew of the Higgins had departed the hanger bay, Kyle began making his way to Engineering. He hadn't seen Lt T'Koris, so he assumed she had went to the bridge with the XO. As soon as he entered, the Assistant Chief Engineer looked up and smiled.

"Mr. Briggs. What timing. I just received the report about the Higgins being damaged. Why don't you grab a couple of the others and go ahead and begin the repairs?" he said as he handed the PADD with the damage listed.

"Aye, sir." came the reply.

He read over the list carefully and choose two other engine specialists to assist him. With his tool kit in hand and the Discovery now warping away from the Albatross, he headed back to the hanger from which he had just come.

Scott was in his ready room, he had to report his findings, he had been informing Adrmial Kawolsky  of the siuation.

" So with some kind of device, they've created heavy gravimetric distortions, and it's ripped the Albatross apart. We recovered what we could, but the ship was lost and I gave the order to destroy her. "

Kawolsky, sat on the other side of the computer screen, was in his office going over the report he had received from the Discovery while listening to Captain Bradley's account of events. He was saddened to hear about the loss of one Starfleet's more advanced starships.

"I'm sorry to hear that, Captain"  he said, "But you did what you had to."

Kawolsky paused, placing the PADD he was reading down on the table in front of him.

"I take it there were no survivors?"

" None. most of the ship was exposed to space, and what bodies we found had there insides almost liquefied, they where shaken to death. "

Kawolsky bowed his head at the thought of the one thousand crew who had perished on the Galaxy-class starship.

"That's unfortunate. Captain McDonald was a good man. The Albatross had a fine crew."

A couple more beats passed. Kawolsky leaned back, resting against the comfortable chair he had acquired for his office.

"What's the Discovery's ETA back to Starbase 83?"

Another beat passed.

"Agreed."  he replied  "Get yourself back here for some R&R and then we'll debrief. Kawolsky out."

With that, the com channel was terminated, leaving just the Federation logo gracing the screen.
