PO2 Danjar-Torra Addams
[Carraya IV - Archeological Ruins]

While the others clustered about the pillar to read its inscription, Torra moved off a distance to get a bit of perspective on the problem of deciphering the Vulcan-like symbols.  When the Captains' adopted daughter spoke of finding a storage facility rather than a weapon or ship, Torra couldn't contain her curiosity.  "We should definitely see what's in that storage facility.  Is there some reason we can't subsurface scan using the ship?"

[Archeological Ruins - Carraya IV]

When Torra spoke up, it reminded Ian of something he had forgotten to do and as the bulk of the away team had gathered to hear the new discovery, he figured now was as good a time as any to make his announcement. He tapped his commbadge so that what he had to say would be heard aboard the ship as well."

=/\= "Gentlebeings, this is Commander Galloway, your attention please. As you know Petty Officer Torra has filled many roles aboard Discovery, security, medical, and operations. What you might not know is she challenged the commissioned officer's exam and it is my distinct pleasure ta announce that Petty Officer Second Class Torra Danjar-Addams is now Ensign Torra Danjar-Addams.

"That is the good news, but for those of you aware of the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition, the 285th Rule states 'No good deed goes unpunished' and as a result, Ensign Danjar-Addams is assigned to the science department effective immediately. I guess your yeoman work in isolatin' the Iaba virus is the reason for your new assignment. Congratulations Ensign."
=/\=

Ian  reached into his pocket and removed Torra's petty officer insignia and replaced it with the single 'pip' of an ensign.

=/\= "Computer. Recognize Ian Galloway, Commander, USS Discovery." =/\=

"Acknowledged."

=/\= "Computer. Log promotion of Petty Officer Second Class Torra Danjar-Addams to Ensign." =/\=

Ian smiled at Torra and added.

As Cadet Ruthie Falleq-Tekin

The red-head beamed at the announcement from her father's First Officer, and held out her hand to the new officer.  "Congrats!"

However, there were few things that would force the attention of the young science cadet from her passions, and this certainly wasn't one of them.

"The planet's lithosphere is rich in inhibiting metals that make surface scanning nearly impossible.  Add that the concentration around the site, and its easy to see why this planet was selected as their weapon location." Ruthie stated, pointing back at what looked like just jungle-laden hills.

"What we have is an ancient Farraday cage for our modern sensors.  You wouldn't know it, but none of that vista is natural hills... at least they weren't natural to begin with." she stated, turning back to the First officer as another Federation scientist came up the path and made a beeline for him.

"Commander, sir, we think we got access to the chamber.  The Star Science Academy workers are just getting the doors open, and they requested your team take point on security." stated the non-Starfleet scientist, inciting a large grin on Ruthie's face.

"I can't wait to see what is in there!  Let's hurry!" she said, practically bouncing down the path... looking a whole lot like her mother back on Katra station.

Back at the site, as the Romulans opened the vine covered doors, the inside was surprisingly dry and clean.  It certainly wasn't a vacuum seal, but it was close.  Inside was old ancient computers with push keys instead of touch screen panels, and lines of cables around the facility.  It looked like an ancient research facility alright, a classic laboratory.  There was no sign of the so called weapon itself, but there was a lot of testing locations, and a lot of old notes.

Perhaps it would mean someone she can work with in regard to forensics? Nira thought. After all, she still needed a science lab to use as her own forensic science lab.

Torra tilted her head in confusion at the Commander's oddly timed and unexpected announcement of her promotion.  She'd passed the exam?  She'd passed the exam!  She was an Ensign now?!

"Uh... Thank you, sir." she quietly acknowledged.  And tried to wrap her head around not just that she had passed... but that somehow she'd been assigned to Science now?  "I'll do my best."

Torra smiled towards the cadet at her congratulations. "Thank you." Torra acknowledged with a dip of her head, yet was glad when the cadet turned to the Commander and went right back to work describing the finding, as it took the focus off her.

The Grazerite listened closely.  The Commander had said that as of this moment she was a member of the Science department... which meant she should report to the lead science officer to get her orders.   From her rounds earlier she knew that Lt Cadbury was still on the ship and that the lead Science team member was Ensign Rajagopalan.  When she turned to him questioningly, he motioned her to follow him and the cadet.  So she did.   The cadet lead them to where the entrance to the newly found chamber was being opened.

Perhaps it would mean someone she can work with in regard to forensics? Holy Rings of Betazed, she thought to herself,

Torra waited patiently outside the entrance while others took their first looks then it was her turn.  The first thing that caught the Grazerite's attention was the papers.  If it was a laboratory, then the papers likely had notes on what was being studied or developed here.

She lowered her head to step through the doorway and moved over towards one of the tables, scanning with her tricorder all the while.   The papers were ancient.   Direct contact could potentially damage them making reading them impossible.  Torra set her med-kit down on the floor carefully and pulled out a set of forceps and a pair of sterile gloves.  With extreme care she began to take scanned photos of the table and the notes laid out on it's surface. Once that was done she, with extreme care using the forceps, slid the top paper over off to the side, to see if there was more written on the opposite side and what might be written down before.

"The characters written seem the same as those on the pillar.  They'll need to be deciphered." she called out towards the others in the room.

[ Carraya IV - Archaeological Ruins - Away Team ]

" Don't get me wrong , Lieutenant , i understand your general feelings perfectly . I would be lying if i'd say i wouldn't think the same way , if i were in your shoes . I hold no love for the Dominion either , many people tend to forget it but ... their last victims were us . Cardassia Prime was practically levelled in its entirety . "

The Lieutenant's feelings were " legit " , so to say . Like most people's , actually . A lot of them had very good reasons to feel the way they did , the only thing Deryn very much disapproved of was being put in the same basket as the previous generation who had committed those crimes and potentially helped the Dominion kill millions of innocents .

" There is no need to apologise , really . Just wanted to clear things up , now that nobody's shooting at us , yet . I don't want to get off the wrong foot with anyone . But i'll leave you be now , i've borrowed enough of your time . "

She straightened and saluted . " Lieutenant . "

Not long after she walked away , the Commander made a rather peculiar announcement through the combadges to make the whole team know about PO Torra's promotion to Ensign . She was a kind , hard-working person . . Several of the nearby crew members offered her congratulations one at a time . When she could squeeze in , Deryn offered her a hand in turn accompanied by a honest smile .

" My congratulations on your well-deserved promotion , Ensign Torra ! "

Continuing to explore the local ruins , the Away mission eventually stumbled on something interesting in the ruins . A laboratory of all things , that seemed full of old technology . Everything seemed so out of this time in the lab that it almost looked like a weird holodeck sim .

Species : Cardassian | Age : 26 | 5'9"

[USS Discovery - Sickbay]

Reset. The words was bad as root canal work. The inside of him screamed in fear. He had wanted to leap off the biobed, run for a shuttle, and fly away to get away far from the 'reset'

"I sure can try," he started to unzip the coat. He slowly lifted both arms but cringed as he bent his right elbow. Seething pain came through his gritted teeth.

There was no hope. He had to allow the new medical person to man hand his jacket. "Is that good enough?"

[USS Discovery - Deck 10 - Sickbay]

Leesill watched the man cringe as he attempted to remove his jacket on his own. She hated to image the pain he must have been in just trying to put it on himself in the morning.

"Here, let me help you," she offered as she gently rolled down the collar of his jacket while gently supporting his forearm so he wouldn't bend his elbow more than necessary. Sure enough, with the bulky outer jacket out of the way, she could see the unnatural dip in his shoulder from where the arm had come out of the socket. The rear muscle group of the shoulder hung slack while his humerus seemed to have pinched brachial axis against his pectoral muscles.

"This should be simple enough to put back into place," she said as she gently probed his scapula with her fingers, looking for any additional signs of injury. "First let's get you something for the pain." Setting down the medical tricorder and retrieving a hypospray from the nearby tray, she dialed in a dose of Asinolyathin, just enough to dull the pain, but not enough to render him unable to function for the next few hours. Then, she placed the hypo to his jugular vein. "This should help with the pain, and then we'll get you fixed up and out of here in just a few moments."

Torra urged the Ops officer to come with as she headed off to the chamber opening...

[Carraya IV - Archaeological Dig]

Holy Rings of Betazed, she thought to herself,

[Archeological Ruins - Carraya IV]

Ian could only smile at the cadet's boundless energy and excitement. This was her area of expertise and she could barely contain herself with the discoveries being made. Ian followed the others to the chamber and he remembered a 'farraday cage' was a sort of old sensor suppression technique to block the radio spectrum.

He wasn't sure about the link to a nuclear weapons control room as Said suggested, but it clearly was a control room and it was known the Romulans built something on Carraya IV of great power. It made sense that this room could be where they controlled it.

Even though he wasn't a scientist by trade, he did possess a healthy dose of paranoia regarding touching things before they understood them.

"As we are dealin' with a technology both primitive and advanced, we've got our work cut out for us. Based on the farraday effect Cadet Falleq-Tekin implies we are in, it is unlikely our tricorders will of much use. You should be able to take images of what you see and make audio recordin's without trouble, so that's what we will do.

"I can't emphasize this next part enough, don't bloody touch anything. We don't know if this system is active nor the consequences of what activatin' it will do. Until we have a better idea of what we are doin' limit your curiosity ta pictures."

[USS Discovery - Sick bay]

The man had a grimaced smile on the question if he was ready. "To be honest I am not ready. However I don't have a choice," he grinned. "Please do it quickly before my happiness wears out."

[USS Discovery - Deck 10 - Sickbay]

While pressing the hypospray against his jugular vein until she heard an audible hiss, she attempted to reassure him. "You should start to feel a diminishing level of pain in, 3...2...1...right about now." Setting down the hypospray she picked up the medical tricorder once more to quickly scan him. There was a momentary spike in his blood pressure and heart rate, likely brought about by his fear that the procedure would be painful, followed by a slow but steady decline as the medication began to kick in.

"You shouldn't feel much pain now. I'll get this arm popped back into place, make sure you haven't damaged yourself any further and then you will be free to go." Setting the arm was fairly easy. Another scan showed no further damage to the nerves or muscles of the rotator cuff, but they may experience a level of stiffness or soreness once the medication wore off.

"Now I want you to take it easy with that arm, no strenuous activity, and maybe be a bit more careful how you sleep on it." Leesill had never heard of someone dislocating their shoulder from sleeping on it wrong, but for some patients it was easier to go along with their story than to press further. "You are free to go now. Congratulate your wife later on my behalf, I'm guessing with her going into science that I may not get as much of an opportunity to work alongside her." A slight smirk appeared on her face as she attempted some playful teasing, "however, I might suggest coming up with excuses to spend time with her that don't involve ending up being poked and prodded in a science lab."

Torra glanced up from her recording of the notes and hoped her careful documentation wasn't considered as 'touching'.  It was just a few papers after all.  "Yes sir.".

She of course would be extra careful.  She was fully aware of the human adage of the 'Bull in China shop' and given her large size and horns didn't want to viewed in that light.

Torra, having been around as part of the crew during the visit to the station in the Gamma Quadrant, knew exactly who the cadet was and her relationship to the Captain - not that Torra had had any opportunity to have met the cadet before today.  No... What she knew she had picked from those mourning along with Captain due to the then believed death of his son, Tidu.  That had been a sad time for the ship as a whole.  Ruthie had been with them then too. A surprise intended for his wife.

Torra shook her head at her distracted thoughts and continued on with her recording.

Once finished with the papers on the one desk, Torra returned them to the position she'd found them in and moved to the next pile of notes and repeated the process.  Torra was quite methodical as she worked.

From outside the chamber, George's deep rumbling voice could be heard inquiring to the Commander about allowing Evi to take a look.   It was an interesting notion that the young Romulan might be able to help decipher the symbols.  For a moment she hoped that the Commander allowed it, even if just so that she had someone to speak to on her same level, but then realized that was a silly reason to involve a civilian- especially one so young.

Ian had to admit Hugo's suggestion was certainly non-linear thinking, which was unusual for an engineer, sohe replied in a quiet tone none of the Romulans  could hear.

"Interesrtin' thinkin' Lieutenant. I have no objections, but let's  see what Miss Annhwi has ta say about workin' with Romulans first."
