Judy rolled her eyes when Saya and Kyo took Max's side, but she knew they were all correct. Retirement had been treating her very kindly, and the little bit of color in her pale skin wasn't even the beginning.

After some more walking, as the waterfall was only concealed by a curve in the ravine and thus the trail, Kyo asked his question.
"Well, where do you want me to start?" she asked. "Parenting fundamentally transforms your life on virtually every level."

Kyo shrugged uncertainly, now that it came down to it. He gave Saya a questioning look. She should really be the one to decide what she wanted to know. He'd ask questions as they occurred to him based off of what his mate asked.

Saya considered for a moment and said, I would like to know more about your experiences of pregnancy and birth, if you are comfortable talking about that time. I don't know if my own birthing process will be anything like a human's; in fact, we are hoping for a Bajoran birth since my pregnancy seems to be following that route, but I am preparing myself for the possibility that it won't be.

I don't know how much you know about Vulcan births, but they can be exceptionally painful and labor can last for days.

Kyo'd heard this already, but he still paled (as much as his already fair skin could) upon hearing it again.

They came upon a bench as Saya spoke.
"Let's sit down, shall we?" Judy offered. "Max still has all his original organs, so he needs to rest more."
"That I do," Max echoed as he sat down on the bench, with Judy taking a spot at his side. From here, the waterfall could be seen clearly.
"My pregnancy experience is probably going to be a little different from yours, for a number of reasons," the older woman said somewhat apologetically.
"First of all, I had two in there at once. This means they were a lot more crowded in there, and I could feel them a lot more. You definitely feel the little person growing inside you, whether you want to or not, day or night."

Then, she sighed.
"The other reason I'm useless to you is this," she then remarked, as she unbuttoned the lower few buttons of her shirt. "I had a c-section, very recommended for twins, and not a lot of fun. The little scar, as you can see, is still there after all those years. In your case, in light of all the hybrid biology in play, I think something similar might be in order. A natural birth could get a little messy. And, as a bonus for all the pain they caused you, you can make sure the kiddo never lives down the fact that they were too spoiled to come out like a normal baby. Neither of the Eastman boys will ever forget it."
The last few comments drew a chuckle from Max, as they ought to.

Saya joined Judy and Max on the bench, sitting next to Judy and leaving space on her other side for Kyo. However, he chose to stand facing the others, listening to Judy's story and smiling down at Saya, as well as keeping an eye on Alieth as the three-horn began sniffing around the bench.

Saya listened attentively, her brow furrowing slightly as the older woman described the twins' birth and showed her scar. Her eyes jumped up to Kyo's, who had glanced briefly at Judy's stomach then looked back at Saya.

I hadn't considered simply asking for a c-section. A fetal transport might also be a possibility. She chewed her lip as she considered. Would you be disappointed if we didn't have a 'natural' birth experience? she asked Kyo.

Absolutely not, he asserted firmly. I want whatever is best and safest for you and the baby, whatever that is.

Saya blinked in surprise at his vehemence, but then smiled at him. She shouldn't have been surprised that he'd want what was best for her.

"Safety has to be the first priority," Judy echoed as she buttoned her shirt back up. "You should consult with a doctor to see if a natural birth would be a safe option, which it could be, I don't know for sure, but my gut feeling is that a transport or c-section would be less stressful and probably more pleasant. The hybrid physiology, and the Vulcan half especially, can make it a rather tricky affair."

At this point, Judy stood back up, pushing off with her hands against Max and her walking stick. He followed suit.
"There's a picnic table right at the base of the fall, where we can set up the instruments," the older woman explained. "Do you have more pregnancy questions, or are we ready for the next phase?"

Yes, let's move on, Saya said agreeably. You've given me something I want to think about. I'm not sure who to speak to in Sickbay, however. I'd been seeing Dr. Juraan, a Bajoran, but he was recently transferred. I haven't yet had an opportunity to express any of my concerns to another doctor. Simply learned that I was pregnant and a couple of check-ups since then.

You know how I feel about doctors,
she added wryly.

Kyo returned to the cart and set off down the trail, taking the lead since there was only the one path to follow. Because of his longer stride, he was able to reach the picnic table ahead of the others and begin laying out the instruments.

"I can put you in touch with someone," Judy answered Saya. She knew of the young woman's past concerns, but she thankfully also knew some tactful, caring doctors. She also knew Darby Nelson and Kece Lunn, but that was neither here nor there.

"So, after birth, you enter into very difficult phase #1. At that point, the baby has one way to communicate - screaming - and relatively simple demands - food, sleep, diaper changes. In terms of the abilities of the little bundle of joy, you're looking at significantly less cognitively than Alieth or these two goons."

At calling the dogs "goons", Judy made a face at them, and then continued.

"You'll be getting very little sleep, that's for sure. I can't really speak to feeding, since I had to deal with two at once, but that's a mess in and of itself. Although, although, I should note, it's not as bad as when they get interested in boobs again in their teenage years. Their teenage dating will either bring you joy or ruin you."

As she sat down at the picnic table, she laughed.
"I know this is a tangent, but my mother was absolutely evil to all my boyfriends."
"Including me," Max added.

Saya chuckled weakly at Judy's words. She hadn't gotten as far as thinking of feedings and lack of sleep, at least not beyond the sleep they were already missing because of her sudden fits of sneezing in the middle of the night.

That'll all take some juggling, no doubt. I'll do everything I can to help, too. I know I can't do everything, but I can make sure Saya doesn't have to do it all.

She smiled at him and moved to sit on the bench where she could tuck herself under Kyo's arm. He wrapped the arm affectionately around Saya's shoulders and pressed her close.

"Funny you should mention juggling," Judy replied as she took her guitar out of its case. "Friends of mine, who had their kids one at a time, have said that having multiple kids is like juggling an increasing number of balls. You know all the motions, at least in concept, but the amount of moving things in there at once is the determining factor. So that's something to think about, in the future, if you want to have more kids."

Max sat down next to Judy, resisting the temptation to scoop her into his lap. They didn't want to make their guests uncomfortable.

"Well, what shall we play first?" Judy asked, as Max wrapped his arm around her waist and gently tickled her - just enough where she was holding in a giggle.

Kyo chuckled and said, I think we'll just worry about one for now, with a glance at Saya.

She nodded earnestly with wide eyes. Yes, let's see how one goes before we think about more.

Kyo had already removed his tivara from its case and had been holding it while they talked. Now he gently removed his arm from around Saya and raised it to his lips. He had a song in mind that fit this spot perfectly.

When Kyo began, Saya turned to watch his face, loving the joy she found there as he played.

As Kyo began to play a tune Judy had not heard before, she devoted a minute to getting a feel for the music.

And then, once she felt confident enough, she tried her hand at the chords. Not having sheet music, she was purely reliant on her ears, but she managed okay.
Max was, as usual, impressed.

"That was beautiful," he praised.
"It was. I like it," she added. "We absolutely must try it with sheet music sometime."
And then, as often happens, Judy was struck by an out-there idea.
"You remember 'Something'?" she asked, looking primarily at Saya. "One of the songs we did on Mt. Seleya? The Uke works really well, I think, for most of it, but there are slide guitar transitions that the Uke can't really handle, and scatting really doesn't do justice to. I wonder if we can make those work with the tivara?"

Placing the guitar back on the table, Judy opened her backpack. A solid 3/4ths of it was devoted to medical stuff, including documentation, weeks' worth of meds, and a solar-powered spare charger for her heart's monthly juice boost. However, there was also a pad of paper and a pen, and that was what she was after.

Thank you, Kyo said, flushing slightly. I'll have to send you a copy of the sheet music. It's not published yet. Maybe we can write the guitar part together?

Saya smiled as she unzipped her cello case, pleased that Kyo had felt comfortable enough with Judy and Max to play one of his own compositions.

I might be able to, Kyo answered Judy. It's more a matter of practice for things like that, and knowing the song helps.

Was that one of the songs that ended up on the news service?

Saya got her lightweight cello settled between her knees, settling the endpin into the dirt and making sure it was firmly seated. Soon she was drawing the bow across the strings to test the tuning while the others talked.

"Bold of you to assume I remember," Judy replied. "I don't even remember if I took my lunch meds. Did I?"
She reached for the primary pill tray, and, sure enough - she hadn't.
"Oh, gosh. It's a minor miracle my acid reflux hasn't murdered me yet," she kvetched as she put the small assortment of pills into her palm, and then in her mouth, and downed them with water.

"Well, now that that's taken care of, let me work out the sections we need."
With the guitar, she started first by playing the slide intro. Switching off, she sketched those notes on the paper.
Then, the whole first verse (with pronouns switched in the lyrics, because Max), and the transition after that. Max, knowing Judy's habit of slightly changing lyrics like that to convey her love of him, blushed a little.

"It just goes like that, the transition, and then we can maybe improvise other ways to weave the tivara in elsewhere. Does it seem doable?"

Kyo watched over Judy's shoulder as she wrote out the notes for him. Yes, I can do that, he said. I'm sure I can come up with some improvisations. He played a few bars while Judy held the paper to get the feel for it, then nodded. I've got it. Everyone else ready? He glanced to his other side where Saya was sitting.

Go ahead. I'll be jumping in with an improvised bass line, Saya said, bouncing her bow against the cello strings eagerly. She'd not had a chance to play in awhile and was looking forward to it.

"I'm ready," Judy answered. "Since we don't have a drum to do the drum solo, Kyo, you have to start, so I'll count us in."

Uke in her lap, Judy counted them in with her voice and her fingers.
"One, two, three, four."

While playing and singing, Judy cast her eyes at times to her fellow musicians, other times to the waterfall, and most of the time to her hubby, just in case there was any ambiguity as to who she associated the lyrics with.

Once they were done, Judy set the uke aside and did an exaggerated bow.
"Oy! My back!" she then kvetched. "Don't let me do that again."

Sitting back down, she looked over at the youngsters.
"I wouldn't mind seeing more of the tivara in the spotlight."
