Fun in the Sun (open to all)

[Puzzles]

Leanna stood back and admired her and Seamus's handiwork and if felt good to get her hands dirty and be involved especially after yet another near death experience. However this time it had been sabotage on the holodeck and not some alien bug or plant wanting to kill them all. So once she had recovered from the foray into the past, the Betazoid had decided to throw a party but with a difference and with the Admiral visiting the station thought it was the perfect opportunity to get everyone together and have some much needed fun.

Her vision had been to create a artificial beach and had commandeered a portion of the play area as well as the spot she usually allocated for the grotto at Christmas and together with Seamus had transformed it into a small piece of paradise.

It had sun loungers, parasols, blankets to sit on and a BBQ which was in the capable hands of Marketh one of the chefs. Alongside the BBQ there had been tables set up and some of the staff were currently filling them with all matter of salads, sauces, side dishes such as mac and cheese and other delights. There was also a dessert station and of course a table dedicated to the cocktails that had been made especially for the event.

Leanna had even dressed accordingly in a blue and silver bikini with a matching wrap draped loosely around her middle and a large blue orchid in her hair. Now all she had to do was wait for her guests to arrive for the private get together.

[Puzzles]

The last time Felicity had walked into Puzzles she'd been dressed in finery and looking forward to an entertaining night. This evening she was less about the finery, dressed as she was in a flowing and white halterneck summer dress, completely backless and so comfortable that she wondered if T'Rell had felt similarly in her colourful native Caitian garment. She'd certainly moved beautifully and with freedom through those cars on that bloody Orient Express. Their last party might not have been quite the success Felicity had hoped it to be, but she still had high hopes for Leanna's barbecue.

"FLICK!"

She'd barely stepped inside when a large body clashed with her much, much smaller one, grabbed a hold of her and squeezed tightly, lifting her up off the ground in the process. "Jack!" She'd just about caught enough of a glimpse of her jubilant attacker before the breath was knocked out of her. "Can't. Breathe."

"Sorry, sorry!" The Puzzles server apologised quickly and released her, a laugh in his voice and his eyes crinkling in the corners with amusement.

"You're working, Jack?" Felicity shook her head, grinning as she readjusted her dress. "I told you at least a week."

"Man's gotta make bread and honey. I've got six mouths to feed, woman!"

"I know, I can clearly recall them taking over my Sickbay."

He laughed and then offered her a cheeky wink. "And you had the patience of a saint."

What a glorious lie! For the most part, Felicity was a very patient person. There were few who tried her; her mother was one. Xander Dorset was another. And children... No, that wasn't entirely accurate. She liked the cheeky ones, though truthfully they were usually the worst behaved. "How did Conor's biology test go?"

"Very well. That reminds me, the kids want to thank you properly for, y'know, the me not dying thing. Can you come over for dinner some night? You and Lieutenant Dorset."

"Um..."

"Please, Flick? It would mean a lot to the kids." Jack was being called away to serve, but he still managed to turn those puppy dog eyes on her. No wonder he has six kids.

She sighed, beaten, though she didn't look at all unhappy about it. "...Sure."

"Great! I'll send out the invites tomorrow. Catch you later, Counselor." He bounded away and Felicity suppressed a groan, her eyes already searching for alcohol and Leanna.

With everything ready and up to her standards, Leanna began directing her servers to begin handing out lays made with colourful fresh flowers and painstakingly hand made by the diminutive Bar Owner. She herself took some in her delicate hand after allowing Seamus to place one around her neck as the band also suitably dressed for the occasion began to play the first song.

Humming along to it as she picked up one of cocktail creations, served in a coconut shell with obligatory umbrella, fruit skewer and straw. Enjoying its fruity taste as she moved towards the entrance and spotted her best friend as Jack moved off to continue serving.

Smiling she approached Flick. " Flick welcome and you look stunning " she said " Although you definitely need one of these " she said reaching to place the garland over her friend's neck whilst Seamus appeared with the same fruity concoction that Lea had.

[Puzzles]

People had begun to gather at the establishment already when Nikki arrived. She had been on the station only a couple days but had been told that there was going to be a fun little get together in the form of a BBQ. The idea itself had interested her, and after only a small amount of argument from herself, she had opted to go. She was informed that the theme of the BBQ was more a reflection of summertime on earth, and she needed to dress appropriately and comfortably. Easier said than done. The young redhead had only a handful of outfits upon arriving, none of which were suited for a summer day.

As luck would have it she managed to buy a couple things, using her meager savings, from one of the many merchants on the station. A simple Green Bikini and a pair of sandals. From her own outfit, she added a pair of nearly too short denim cutoffs and a baseball cap. The outfit was simple, but it was exactly what she might have worn back on earth. Given that this was her day off, and that she was going to be wearing shorts she had even opted not to wear her prosthetic leg. This was both a cosmetic and a comfort choice for her.

Nikki had managed to slip in rather easily, moving swiftly past some of the other patrons, and not drawing too much attention as she moved on her crutches towards a place she might sit. Perhaps it was her small stature that aided the lack of attention, or perhaps it was that many of the guests were already beginning to converse among themselves. Either way, she was thankful to manage to get in before bumping into too many people. Once seated she slipped her crutches off her arms and leaned them against the table. It was nice to see people interacting outside of work. So far most of her interactions had been in uniform and she hadn't really had a chance to get to know anyone let alone start making friends. Tonight was going to be a good night to change that though.

[Puzzles]

Felicity broke into a smile at Leanna as she approached, and she helpfully brushed her hair to the side so the garland would sit comfortably. "Back at you," she responded, appreciating her friend's easy confidence while rocking a bikini. "I definitely need one of those." She eyed up the coconut shell Seamus was holding and eagerly reached for it. If Seamus was less of a gent he probably would have rolled his eyes at her.

She took a testing sip and her eyes closed with pleasure. "Just what I needed." She didn't even want to think about what Jack had just talked her into. For the first time she had a proper look around Puzzles, taking in all of the work Lea and her staff had put in to simulate a proper beach party. Without having to use the holosuite, thankfully.

"The bar looks great, lads," she told them, her head nodding a little to the rhythm of the very catchy tune the band was playing. Her sweeping gaze stopped when she noticed the girl with the crutches, her eyes narrowing for a second while she tried to place her. She glanced at Leanna, and back toward the young woman. "New transfer. Engineering, I believe. Shall we?" Felicity offered her arm to Leanna, ready to start their mingling engines.

Once they'd approached their latest addition to the Columbus crew Felicity stook out her hand and began the introductions. "Nikki, isn't it?" She asked. While fairly certain that she'd memorised the name she still wanted to be sure. "Felicity Ellis, counselor and CMO. And this is Leanna Mazal, proprietor of Puzzles, the best bar on the Promenade."

told Mormor said, nudging Xander right back as they took in the loose, colourful, and, in some cases, revealing outfits of the party-goers. Nora, for her part, had chosen to dress in a white cotton dress that she wore with worn leather sandals. Xander was almost certain he had seen her gardening in that outfit back home... Or maybe he only thought so because she wore it with her loopy gardening hat.

Everything was so well set up. The temperature was perfect. The blue skies were vibrant. Even the sand felt wonderful between her toes. It really was like a day at the beach. On the nearby tables, she spotted the food and drinks. All manners of food were placed upon them. Various salads that one would find at a BBQ. Hot dogs and hamburgers, No doubt cooked up on the grill just moments earlier. Even an assortment of cold drinks. Nikki already knew what she was gonna go for. Macaroni Salad, a burger, and a cold beer. Her thoughts lingered for a moment on the beer. How long had it been since she had a drink? Nearly 7 months now. She certainly wanted a cold brew to break the unintentional alcohol fast.

Nikki looked up confused when she heard her name. She hadn't expected to be addressed so directly, after all, she had only been here a very short while. Having someone know her by face and name already meant one of three things. This woman was an officer, a fellow engineer, or a counselor.

Quote
"Nikki, isn't it?"

"Err. Um Yes." Nikki said standing up and taking the woman's hand. Her balance was impeccable as she stood without even a hint of wobbling, despite only having one leg to stand on.

Quote
"Felicity Ellis, counselor, and CMO. And this is Leanna Mazal, proprietor of Puzzles, the best bar on the Promenade."

There it was. Counselor and CMO. She had called it to a tee. The other woman with her had been the owner of Puzzles. "Thank you. It's a pleasure to meet you both." She said as she looked up at the two women. While they weren't as exceptionally tall as some of the people she had met, they were still taller than her, which she wasn't surprised by.

"I just transferred in this week. I'm still getting used to things out here, but I'm greatly enjoying it." She flashed a smile as she released Felicities hand and extended her own towards Leanna. "Miss Mazal, You have done a wonderful job with this evening. I can say that It really feels like a summer day back on earth." She cast another quick look around as more people entered, many of whom were dressed for the event. Strangely there were even a few people who looked a little overdressed. She wondered since the ambient temperature was on the warmer side if they were feeling the heat.

Leanna smiled at her bestie's reaction to her outfit and the drink that was soon handed over by Seamus as she took a sip of her own fruity concoction. " Thank you and I thought you might " she replied as Seamus then left them and Flick complimented the bar and what they had done. " You know me when it comes to parties and after the debacle of the ... well lets forget about that and enjoy tonight " she said knowing she didn't have to talk about the holodeck as Flick then suggested that they go over and speak to the new Engineer.

" Sounds good to me " she stated as she linked arms with Flick and they walked over to Nikki and smiled as Flick introduced them.

"Err. Um Yes." Nikki said standing up and taking the woman's hand. Her balance was impeccable as she stood without even a hint of wobbling, despite only having one leg to stand on.

As the two spoke and shook hands, Lea noticed two familiar people enter but for now wouldn't mention it to Flick that her favourite person had arrived besides there would be plenty of time to tease Xander later and speak with the beloved Mormor.

When Nikki then mentioned that she had only transferred in this week, again Leanna offered her a friendly smile as she let go of Flick's hand and reached out her own towards Lea. Lea shook it warmly as Nikki spoke and complimented her about the beach setting she had created.

" It's good to meet you Nikki and thank you, I'm happy with how its all turned out and that everyone is enjoying it and please help yourself to food and drinks as there is no limit".

"Lovely to meet you," Felicity returned the smile as Nikki shook her hand, then turned to clasp Leanna's. She nodded in enthusiastic agreement at the engineer's words of praise for the set up.

" It's good to meet you Nikki and thank you, I'm happy with how its all turned out and that everyone is enjoying it and please help yourself to food and drinks as there is no limit".

"I recommend trying one of these bad boys." Felicity held up the cocktail-in-a-coconut concoction and shook it from side to side. It made no sound; she'd already guzzled the entire thing. "Enough rum in one to turn you pirate." It had certainly loosened her silver tongue. She turned around, searching for Seamus, or Maggie, or Jack... anyone that might be carrying a handy tray of drinks, and caught sight of a certain sweatered lieutenant of sciences and his grandmother at the other end of the room.

Aw, crap. She was going to have to tell him, wasn't she? She'd just have to face his wrath when he realised what she'd gotten him into. The alternative was to leave him blissfully ignorant, and run the risk of someone else telling him first and receiving a point-blank refusal. Then she'd have to go alone, abandoned, surrounded by six noisy children that were not her own. She'd find some way to convince him.

Seamus, who was never really all that far from Leanna, appeared to take their refill and drinks orders. "Do me a favour, Seamus," she asked softly when he'd finished and began to move away. When he nodded, she continued, "Would you ask Nora and Xander if they'll join us? I need to tell him something."

Trying to suppress another grin at her reaction before asking Seamus to go over and ask if they would join them.

Seamus being Seamus immediately agreed, taking the empty coconut shells with him as Lea turned to Flick. " I spotted them earlier but didn't want to spoil your fun" she teased as she took another sip of her refreshed drink.

After dispensing of the empty shells, Seamus walked up to Xander and his grandmother.

" Hi there, Flick and Lea wanted to know if you would both like to join them as Flick has something to tell you"the Irishman said politely.

Seamus being Seamus immediately agreed, taking the empty coconut shells with him as Lea turned to Flick. " I spotted them earlier but didn't want to spoil your fun" she teased as she took another sip of her refreshed drink.

[Puzzles]

Felicity had been absently stirring her new cocktail with the fruit skewer, watching Seamus approach the the other pair when Leanna spoke. She turned to her, a teasing smile of her own on her lips. "Such a good friend." She tapped her coconut against Lea's in a quick 'cheers', before taking a long drink from the cocktail in preparation for what was to come. "Thankfully, there's more rum."

definitely

Her face broke into a delighted smile when Mormor pulled her into an enthusiastic hug, and Felicity returned it with a quick squeeze. "Love the hat, Nora," she told her softly, mindful of it when she pulled back. Felicity's eyes met Xander's as he made himself comfortable in a lounge chair, her smile no less bright as she took him in properly. While Mormor's choice of outfit screamed casual summer chic and would keep her nicely cool, Xander's sweater and uniform combo on the other hand, said 'I didn't read the invitation'.

"Hi Xander. You look really hot." She kept her expression purposely innocent as she fanned herself, whether swooning from the heat or his general appearance, nobody would ever know. Too easy, she thought, unable then to stop her smile from changing into something with a cheeky edge. Logic might have dictated that she wait until he'd at least agreed to what she was about to ask before she started slagging him off with abandon, but it would seem that she couldn't help herself. Even the fact he'd referred to their invitation as a 'summons' tickled her.

She decided she was just going to get it over with. She'd lay it all out and wouldn't stop or give him a chance to interrupt until it was done. The smile faded a little as she bit down on her bottom lip, thinking through her next words. "So..." She sucked in breath and launched. "Jack invited us to dinner, you and I. Or well, his kids did. To say thanks. I said I'd go and you have to go too, Xander, you can't abandon me. He has six children, Xander. Six, for crying out loud. And they'll all be there, at the same time..." Her voice was just above a stage-whisper, and she sounded just a tad horrified at the prospect. She really was doing a bang up job of selling this dinner.

Lea grinned as Flick teased her back before clinking her coconut against hers but before she could comment back, Mormor and a rather flustered looking Xander arrived. " I agree with Flick, Nora I love it " she said regarding her hat as Nora also enveloped her in a hug which she immediately reciprocated.

" So Nora have you tried one of these yet?" Lea asked gesturing towards her fruity and very alcoholic filled coconut as Flick began the usual teasing conversation with Xander although for a moment wondered if she actually meant what she was saying. Hmm interesting I better watch these twoshe thought to herself and maybe after a few more coconuts she might comment on it. Then again it was always fun whenever the haughty arrogant Science Officer was around.

Looking at her best friend for a moment before Xander being his usual self asked about why they had been brought over. Trying not to think too much about their body language or any hidden thoughts as Flick revealed why she had wanted to speak to him.

Now she understood and decided to help Flick with her cause. " Yes you can't let those six kids down Xander especially after saving their father's life" she said having plenty of experience with Jack's children ever since she had hired him.

Also with being the hostess that she was despite it now being her night off, Lea was also keen to avoid any embarrassing silences or awkwardness as she looked at those gathered. " We might as well make ourselves comfortable and how about food and more drinks?" she suggested sitting down at the table.

[Puzzles]

Her face broke into a delighted smile when Mormor pulled her into an enthusiastic hug, and Felicity returned it with a quick squeeze. "Love the hat, Nora," she told her softly, mindful of it when she pulled back.

"I agree with Flick, Nora I love it" she said regarding her hat as Nora also enveloped her in a hug which she immediately reciprocated.

Mormor beamed as she reached up to flick at the brim of her floppy hat. Nora fussed with her hat for another moment before abandoning the effort, then continued, stunning

"So Nora have you tried one of these yet?" Lea asked gesturing towards her fruity and very alcoholic filled coconut as Flick began the usual teasing conversation with Xander although for a moment wondered if she actually meant what she was saying. Hmm interesting I better watch these two... she thought to herself and maybe after a few more coconuts she might comment on it. Then again it was always fun whenever the haughty arrogant Science Officer was around.

Nora was struggling not to roll her eyes at her grandson when Leanna stepped in with a welcome distraction. She delicately sniffed at the coconut and smiled before motioning for her own from a server. She shook her head with an exasperated smile on her face and graciously accepted her own coconut cocktail from Seamus.

After a sip, Nora sighed contentedly and turned back to Leanna.

Wait, what? Dinner? Six children? Who the hell is Jack? Before he could open his mouth to voice any of his questions, Leanna chimed in to the conversation again.

Now she understood and decided to help Flick with her cause. " Yes you can't let those six kids down Xander especially after saving their father's life" she said having plenty of experience with Jack's children ever since she had hired him.

"Modesty must do it for me," Felicity drawled in response, her eyes catching the movement of the sweater before lazily returning to his face. She then studiously ignored the teasing reveal of skin, raised her coconut and took a long and noisy sip with her straw.

Wait, what?

Felicity nodded along readily when Leanna spoke and she jumped on her friend's assist with enthusiasm. "Imagine those six little disappointed expressions, all staring up at you, rejected, and all they wanted to do was say thanks for saving their beloved papa's life!"

It was probably the rum to blame for the exuberant description, but she was definitely finding her stride. She gave Leanna a grateful glance.

that Jack? He has six children? What sort of person has six

At first, Felicity felt only exasperation when she recognised the expression of confusion on Xander's face and she realised he wasn't aware of who Jack was. When understanding dawned on his face and he began to speak, the exasperation faded and was replaced by something else. A look that was dangerously similar to genuine affection flickered across her features. She managed to stop the eye-roll, but the smile wasn't as easy to hide.

She wondered just how many lucky souls Xander saved on a regular basis to have forgotten the name of the man he'd helped heal on the Orient Express. When she realised he was still talking she refocused and had the good grace to wince. "Well, I didn't mean to, I swear. I just couldn't say no... How could I say no to that!? And I didn't correct him when he assumed I was saying 'yes' for both of us."

Also with being the hostess that she was despite it now being her night off, Lea was also keen to avoid any embarrassing silences or awkwardness as she looked at those gathered. " We might as well make ourselves comfortable and how about food and more drinks?" she suggested sitting down at the table.

"Capital idea, Lea," she declared as she followed the ladies' example and moved toward the table. "I could use more pirate juice." This was all very stressful. She sat down in a chair next to Xander and leaned over, placing her hand atop the armrest of his lounger. Her expression was serious then as she looked at him, a small frown-line appearing between her eyebrows.  "Please say you'll come, Xander." All sorts of empty threats fluttered through her mind; swearing she wouldn't talk to him again, or swearing she'd have lengthy conversations with him three times a day, depending on which he'd find most irritating. But she opted for a sweetener instead. "I'd owe you one...?"

Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these, 'It might have been.'
