[Deck 1- Main Bridge - USS Discovery]

Red alert was still going on, and while the shuddering of the ship was much more muted, the power levels were still dropping as the strutural field was pushed past their limit.  Their Chief's suggestion was perfect for what it was... it gave them time, now they had to find a way to either break the beam, or at the very least neutralize what was happening to the ship.

The Captain had moved over to the main science station, looking at the readout from their scans.  No real solutions, but they were getting closer.

"Here... there is a secondary effect.... that's the key.  There is a repulsing pressure being exerted from our own shield network.  We could try to force the ship out with what systems we have available, or we can stop the stress on the ship completely and then worry about the beams.  The question is... how to we repel the repelling effect of the beams?"

[U.S.S. Discovery - Bridge]

Anastasia shot a speculative look out of the side of her eyes at Zed to gauge his reaction. Tractor beams weren't her specialty but she was a physicist and she understood the principles at play. As soon as she made the decision to speak up she stopped herself. Ve are not even part of zhe krew yet, she thought, starting to chew her lower lip. Hugging her midsection, she wavered for a moment longer before steeling her nerves. Ve said ve could 'elp so 'elp.

Stepping from behind Master's, Anastasia cleared her throat. "Umm... Keptin? I 'ave not officially yoined zhe krew yet. I vaz vis Counselor Masters going zhrough zhe check in process. Ve felt zhe ship shudder and 'ee suggested ve come up. I am rambling." Closing her eyes she took a quick breath. "Peetee Officer Zhestakova, Sciences. I am vondering if flooding zhe shields vis antigravitrons voodn't let us slip free from zhe beams? If not I am zhinking it should buy us some time vis vhatever is causing zhat sheering effect." Anastasia smiled as she finished speaking, proud of herself. Zhat vas not so... Дерьмо! "Zur." Von counselor tells you no 'Zur' and you're back at zhe academy.

[Bridge - USS Challenger]

"On it!" Ruth said simultaneously sliding into a seat at Sciences.  Humming quietly to herself she walked from the turbolift past Ops,[either way has to go past Ops to Sci layout ] she saw him look back and gave him a wink.  It wasn't that she didn't want to be near him, but she really didn't like sitting twiddling her thumbs, and Skye was in her crate asleep so given that having the 'Duracell puppy' actually clapped out asleep was a rarity, she'd opted to make herself useful rather than trying to do a 3 mile hike in a holodeck!

Ruth smiled at Litt, "Sure, I believe we have an outstanding date with Mr ch'Verret... maybe we should make a foursome with Sammy?"

Her hands were so used to the Science controls that she could work and talk at the same time, she knew Captain Galloway well enough to know he probably wouldn't mind a little banter and chat at the moment so long as work was getting done and they were able to flick the switch to totally focused at a second's notice.  Like he said himself, there wasn't much they could do at the moment.

Ruth chuckled at Lahr's 'little mystery'.  He knew that she loved a challenge and she picked up the 'gauntlet' and ran with it.

"As it happens, it seems when our lot have had their way with them, then their biosigns... well can't read them as biosigns but, can read them as Tzenkethi and distinguish between warrior and worker classes. Just need to alter filters a little ... there...They're the ones I can see now...So yeah, there are still 12 about, and... yeah sending the info your way... you got them?  We just had to tune the scans into their bioluminescence.  Just gotta light them up! They pretty much give themselves away, I'm also sending the info to the Security teams tricorders."

=/\=Challenger to all Security teams.  Have sent you a quick update to your tricorders/scanners, Click the folder marked 'Siggy' to run update, it will add a bioluminescence scanner, it exists in the tricorders but you need to go thru the menus, this will bi-pass your need to do that.  It'll show up the Tzenkethi for you, might give you that extra few seconds you need.  You're welcome! =/\=

Ruth chuckled.  "Guess that's why you need us Scientists, if you don't know about these things you don't know to look for them!  But I confess, you got lucky there, I was reading a paper on Tzenkethi about a month ago.  Our beasties... 3 teams of 4 in different places, I read, you coping that Lahr? Challenger security I read as 69 and the Ares added 30.... I know 3 are WIAs did we really lose 9 in action?  Oh man, Captain, I know it's not my job anymore but if you want me to help write... you know." she sighed as a tear trickled down her cheek.  Didn't matter how long you'd been in that seat, that particular job never got any easier.

"If it would take something off Kyle, they're his teams, it's gonna hurt.  Oh Gods!  Please tell me none of the dead or injured are he?  I couldn't face telling Liv.  But good news is that scans of the area say no more nasties, just the 12 left on the Saviour."

Ruth turned and grinned. "Oh it's good to be back!  I feel like I've taken over from Mr. Lek on hair-brained schemes though... that one was based on Science however!"

"Well, you've at least got a choice now... stay out of the way or finish the buggers off!  Now that we can see them we can at least give the Security teams a fighting chance. "

[Bridge - USS Challenger]

Ian managed not to wince at the constant chatter and nodded absently at Ruth's commentary about needing science.

"Typical boffin. Loves ta talk."

He thought as he conceded her basic point on the utility of the science department, but he drew the line at her offer regarding writing letters, replying evenly.

"Thank you for the offer, but it's my responsibility. I'm the one that sent them in, I'm the one that has ta answer for that decision. Good work on isolatin' the Tzenkethi lifesigns. Hopefully, that will prevent there bein' more than nine letters."

[Polar City - Ki'lowo]

In its time, the vast city would have been a hot spot of activity.  If there was something to be said about the architecture, it was resilient.  It was difficult to see what the basic aesthetic was, but the shells of the buildings suggested the simple geometric footprints found on many other worlds.  From the surface, the sister planet was clearly visible in the sky, large enough to see planetary details and was more than ten times the size of typical moons usually seen.  Discovery was barely a dot in the sky, and not visible in the light of the star.

There was plantlife reclaiming the lost city, but otherwise the streets were filled with stone-like rubble and dust... a lot of dust.  There was a breeze blowing in waves throughout the streets, but for the most part, any kind of advanced life was... missing.  Only small creatures, insects, and plantlife still lived here.

The facility that seem to house the tractor beam was large, with a tall emitter-like protrusion on the top of the building.  There was surprisingly no visual beam coming from the building, only the tricorder's reading of a high power output suggesting that this had to be the facility itself.

Around the facility there were barriers put up, apparently long since abandoned, at least from the look.  Considering this was the site of a massive weapon attack with a nuclear signature, the fact that there were stacks of old supplies, weapons, and salvage was... odd.  But there was also a thick layer of dust on them too.  What was not there was the inhabitants, or former inhabitants, that used this facility to its use.  At least not around the outside.

There were no windows visible for this place, and the door seemed shut.  Somehow it was stuck... with a magnetic field powering it.

[Ri'lowo - Polar Capital City]

Panning his tricorder to scan the side of the huge building facing him, Lek quickly found the door and the magnetic field. He frowned as he went through his options, but what made the decision for him was time. The Discovery didn't have an endless amount and they needed to get inside the building as quickly as possible, which dictated his next action.

"Normally, I'd say we try to bypass that magnetic field, but this time, I'm going to go with the club rather than the scalpel approach."

He said as he drew his phaser and set it to maximum.

"If my lone phaser won't do it, I'm certain with four of us firing at maximum, it will cut through the wall quickly enough. Let's see what happens."

And he pressed the firing stud.

[Bridge - USS Challenger]

Ian looked up at Ruth and sighed.

"Honestly Commander, there's bloody little for us ta do. We're movin' for the Savior as slow as a ruptured Alvanian goon-ox. Only thing I can suggest is takin' the science station and makin' sure the Tzenkethi don't try ta drop back in for another visit without us knowin' about it."

[USS Challenger · Bridge · Helm]

Litt was having a hard time, trying to stay calm, but, flying a vessel like the Challenger with only thrusters in a situation like that wasn't the best thing for a helmsman, but he knew that everyone was doing what was possible, but he was wishing he could do better.

A few minutes latter Ruth entered the bridge, Litt gave her a looked when she talked to him.

"Any time you need ma'am!" He said to her and nodded about the coffee... "I'd love too, Sammy was excited to know you." He said to her and thought about something. "Maybe we can go to Luigi's sometime..." He said.

PO1 ShranLahr ch'Verret
[USS Challenger - Deck One - Bridge]

Lahr had hoped that the security forces would be able to overwhelm the Tzenkethi forces quickly and without many losses but that wasn't possible.  With each status update call that came in he dreaded hearing about the losses.

Lahr continued to keep track of the numbers as things progressed.  For a while he'd been able to use his scans to get a clearer picture of the Tzenkethi numbers.  He'd told Commander Briggs between 3 and 4 dozen and he'd hit it pretty much on the nose.  Detailed scans confirmed the Tzenkethi count as 43...  and the reports talled 31 of those dead.  That just left 12 unaccounted for.

The Andorian would have loved to give the boarding teams direction on where to find those remaining 12 but a fair number of the Tzenkethi had been roving quite a bit the last time he had a clear scan of them.. but now they had some disruption interfering with his scans of their bio signs.

"The Tzenkethi are down to their last dozen.  Between the Ares and Challenger we send over 110 so we're going to eventually find them... but we've lost 9 and have another 3 Wounded in Action aboard the Ares" he informed Captain Galloway, just moments before the lift doors opened to reveal Ruth.

Lahr wondered if she had been missing him and therefore felt compelled to come to the bridge to see him?  Or more likely, she was one of those types that needed to be in the thick of things and participating even if she didn't need to... she wanted to.   Yeah, Lahr saw Ruth as that type.  He glanced back towards her even as the Captain spoke to her.  Yeah, that notion made sense to him especially since she wasn't even looking at him.

"Ooh, that would be bad.  Yeah ma'am, I have my sensors trying to assist the security team aboard the Savior but they are somehow masking their bio-signs, but not disrupting comms...  if you can figure out that little mystery while you check for unwanted visitors that'd certainly help me." he remarked.

[Bridge - USS Challenger]

When Ian heard the casualty report, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He let it out slowly and when he opened his eyes, his expression was hard.

"Nine. Nine letters I have to write to families. And for what? Some money? What a waste!"

He raged internally. He knew he could say what he was thinking out loud, but it's what he felt and that wasn't even counting the staggering casualties from the Hermes, now wrecked and a hazard to navigation that he would have to destroy.

Outwardly, he replied in a calm voice.

"Thank you Mister ch'Verret. Track the away team as well as you can and let me know as soon as the Savior is secure."

The Challenger continued to limp a long as was finally make enough progress that it was time to fire the forward thrust to bring her to a halt within transporter range, just three more minutes and they'd be in a position to directly aid the security forces if they needed it.

I've got a post mostly written, but I just wanted to check something. I've seen references to a USS Hera and a USS Hermes - I think it's just a typo and there's only the one ship, but I want to check myself before I wreck myself.

[Lieutenant JG Nira Said | Polar Capital City | Ri'Lowo]

Nira couldn't help smiling, being around Lek. It seemed funny, given that the Ferengi was shorter than even she was. She could see the other two men in the distance. At least she's not losing sight of them.

"I see it, Lieutenant," she said, looking at her tricorder. Hard to pinpoint, scattering effect indeed, but it's not too far.

As she walked, she stepped on something. She looked down and saw that she stepped on some sort of insect, close enough to an Earth cockroach. So maybe there was some form of life after all, something that managed to survive. She noticed one or two more scurrying around.

"Interesting," she said as she drew closer to the men. "Some form of life has clearly survived this apocalypse these worlds endured. Give enough time, millions of years, they could potentially evolve into something sentient, like us."

As they proceeded, she wiped her brow a little and took the city in. She was impressed with how it looked. Looking up, she realized she could see the twin planet in the sky. She was duly impressed with how aligned the planets were. Then she pressed on, drawing closer to the emitters.

[Ri'lowo - Polar Capital City]

Lek looked over at Nira as she commented on a hardy lifeform and his expression became wistful.

"They look tasty. I'll gather a few samples on the way back. Who knows, they might be a new delicacy and make me a hefty bit of latinum. However, our objective is just over that ridge."

Scampering up what proved to be a sloping pile of debris, the away team reached their vantage point and could finally see the tractor emitter. The only questions at this point were, was it protected and could they shut it off.
