Character Bio:
Charles was the second born of two Son's to David and Belinda McTavish, though Charles never knew David owing to the latter's sudden departure from his families lives. Last heard he had moved back to England and shacked up with another woman. Belinda brought up the two boys alone and at times found it to be a struggle, they would constantly bicker and brawl over the silliest things. One of which was using Charles' first name as such, he absolutely came to hate it and would happily go by Mac and later in some cases would answer to Chuck.  Though Chuck was usually reserved for his Mothers use only, but he would still answer to it from anyone else.

When both boys were in their teens, Belinda met Reginald the proprietor of a small hotel in Atlanta, they were married a year later and ran the hotel together. Begrudgingly the boys had to work in the hotel, often doing repetitive tasks and resenting their Mothers new found love. However as time went on they adapted and came to appreciate a lesson their Stepfather had given them and that was essentially life was not easy and they had to work hard to achieve their goals.

When they reached the required ages the McTavish boys joined Starfleet, Brendan became an Engineer and Mac would later become a Marine. So in 2374 Charles entered Marine Boot Camp, where he endured some of the hardest training of his life, which would see him through a costly war.

A lot happened to Mac in '74, firstly he passed Boot Camp with flying colours and made PFC.  Straight away he was deployed to the Tyra system to try and hold off Dominion forces.  It turned out that young Mac was one of the lucky few to survive following a staggering defeat.  Tragedy struck the McTavish family and countless others no doubt, when Brendan perished on the USS Sitak which was part of Operation Return.  Chuck did not learn of his brothers death until months later at his own request, the thinking was that a couple of things would happen.  One would be his state of mind and possible inability to function effectively.  The other was out of fear that his actions might become that of revenge, which in turn would put his fellow Marines in danger.

In 2375 Mac's unit was deployed to the Kalandra system, which would essentially become the limit of the Federations advance.  During said deployment a hopper McTavish travelled in came under fire and was subsequently shot down killing nearly everyone on board.  A few managed to crawl to safety while Mac dragged his dying Platoon Leader from the wreck, the craft exploded while both were still in close proximity.  The explosion finished off the Platoon Leader, but it also had nasty consequences for Chuck.  He suffered a traumatic amputation of his right leg above the knee and was showered with flying metal fragments.

The war came to an end soon after and McTavish was returned to Earth for treatment and rehabilitation.  His physical injuries were easily repaired, though he opted to keep the scars on his back from the shrapnel wounds.  His lost limb was replaced with a bionic one.  However his mental scars took a little longer to get by, he suffered with what was described as Survivors Guilt.

With the rank of Lance Corporal, Mac carried on to serve with his unit and underwent further training, including advanced tactics and an NCO Cadre.  He passed both and was promoted to Corporal and assigned as a fire team leader within his Platoon.  This new responsibility was not something he took lightly, in fact he would go out of his way to help those few under his command.

McTavish retired as a Sergeant amidst rumours of his unit being disbanded and everyone who wanted to stay being integrated in other Starfleet roles.

Retirement didn't sit too well with Mac for long, to begin with it was great having his own routine, without orders being shouted and having the responsibilities for others beneath him.  Though it was only a matter of time before he needed that routine and discipline back in his life.  One thing he never gave up was exercising, with his new leg he was able to keep himself match fit and would often run or swim.
With the Marines being a thing of the past there were only two options he could think of, one would be a Merchant service or enlist in Starfleet again in one of its regular units.  The idea of security or of being a Medic both appealed to him.

Sample post:

After thinking on and off for weeks about his choices, Charles McTavish had decided he needed order in his life once again.  Though he had concerns that his age might be a factor, was he too old to be considered for training in Starfleet?  He had no aspirations of becoming an officer, though he knew for a fact that service was his calling.

Dressed in his best suit Mac entered his local recruiting office, the suit was a fine cut charcoal grey with a black shirt beneath, around his neck was his proudly worn SFMC tie.  He was freshly shaved about the chin and groomed to perfection, he had to give the right impression.

"Hello there, can I be of help?"  Asked a younger man who Mac estimated to be ten years his junior.

"Yes."  His voice was gravelly for a moment until he cleared it quickly.  "I'm looking to enlist."

"Excellent excellent."  The Recruiter replied.  "Please come this way and have a seat."  He said gesturing towards a desk off in one corner.  The two of them headed over and sat at opposite sides to face one another.  For a minute or so the Recruiter tapped at a computer terminal and brought up what appeared to be a form and literature.  That gave Mac a moment to observe the guy, sandy coloured hair, brown eyes, pale complexion and wearing command red with the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class.  "Do you have any idea as to which division you would like to join Mr...I'm sorry we haven't been introduced.  I'm Petty Officer Reilly and you are Mister?"

A wry smile crossed Mac's face.  "McTavish, Charles and I was thinking Security or possibly a Medic?"

Jada

Welcome to the fleet!

I'm the Enlisted Persons Course (EPC) instructor. Because you're new here, you are required to pass the EPC to demonstrate your Trek knowledge, RP skills, and understanding of posting requirements. It helps you get familiar with Shadow Fleet style and be eligible for promotions, and gives you something to do until you get active in a game. :) It's pretty simple, you can write what you like for it within the prompts, and work at your own pace, but it's better to do it quickly.
