Something had changed in Constance. Maybe it was for the better. If you asked her what a ship's personality was a year ago she'd have pulled up the technical specifications and pointed out the minor details herself. But... she was a bit different now. She'd grown. Letting herself get attached to people, letting them in, causes one to mature (and have a few near death experiences sure didn't hurt).

The ship pulled up and the airlock door opened. She smiled,

Then, taking the privilege of the first on the new ship, she stepped on to the USS Athena-A.

[Observation Lounge]

Dylan followed the Captain close behind, after the Athena came and docked with the station. He followed the space jetway down to the airlock, as he emerged out on the ship. He smiled as he turned around, a broad grin growing on his face as he looked around the familiar corridors, with some subtle differences. He turned and found a turbolift, taking it down to Engineering where he found the warp core and engine room.

[Engineering]

He took a few readings and frowned. "What have they done to my engine room?" He exclaimed. All the microenhancements and projects that had ever gone on in this room removed. They'd need to be recompleted but that could wait. Right now he just ran his fingers across every surface he could... as if proving to himself that this was still real.

"So be it. By now you know that I might be a little slow to get in the right headspace"

Anastasia realized that feeling a ship's personality took perhaps as long as feeling a person's personality, especially since a ship's personality can be modified a lot more easily, especially if it is easy to replace parts for something different. Engineering personnel may tinker with it as needed, she understood as much. The most important parts of the ship's technical manual to her will pertain to the scientific equipment, knowing that the three most power-hungry items onboard will be the phasers, the shield generators and the engines, so she would not expect the scientific equipment to take up that much power. And she had to consider the computing equipment as scientific equipment, too. Because data processing (signal or otherwise) is a key component of how exactly the equipment fits into boldly going where no one has gone before.

said the tall human named Warez.

His eyes lighted up as he spoke and he smiled tight lipped at the young ensign.

"Ah yes, I will help you out with the calibration of those systems"

Something that had twice the computational power but was much more high-maintenance than the old system? She had mixed feelings about those. On the one hand, twice the computational power was something that would help, but she also remembered that the computational power required often went up exponentially rather than linearly as the theories being tested get more complex, and that it is entirely possible that the software part of this. Then again she remembered that there were items that could generate cruft, such as feature creep, increasing operating system complexity, and most of these had to do with the software part of the equation.

[Computer core room]

She remembered that what they were doing were mostly on the hardware side, so she wasted no time in coordinating the gel systems neural network. Of course, ensuring that the coordination was properly made was more on the software check side, so she made sure to bring the proper PADD to this end.

The ship pulled up and the airlock door opened. She smiled,

Then, taking the privilege of the first on the new ship, she stepped on to the USS Athena-A.

[Observation Lounge 4]

James offered a small sigh as he looked over to see the Vesta taking off and realizing that there was a refit intrepid behind it. "Right there. To my knowledge the duty rosters haven't been filled out yet. I think we're probably going to be heading there in a few moments to shove off to her maiden voyage. Report to the bridge when we get there." Carter replied walking to stand next to the captain. "Cap, have we received orders on a new mission yet? I'm ready to get off this station."

[Observation Lounge]

Moment's over. Alex thought almost regretfully, following the Captain and her crew onboard their new ship. He felt very much so like an outsider, but then again, he was. Over the past several weeks, he had been working on the board investigating their actions while engaging the Borg, and even though they were vindicated at the end, Alex knew it wasn't an easy process. He had been on the receiving end of that scrutiny before.

Normally, he would've suggested that the board wait a bit of time, allowing the crew to familiarize with their new ship before going onboard, but the Athena's mission tempo was unrelenting. Starfleet needed the experimental technology she was testing, and they needed proof that the Captain who commanded their testbed vessel was solid.

Coming up to Constance and her XO, he greeted them both openly. "Captain Lafayette, Commander Carter. My name's Alexander Wu, I'm a JAG Officer attached to Columbus. Is there somewhere private where we could talk?"

[Starbase Columbus - Secure Quarters]

Lying on her stomach on the simple bed in the otherwise empty room, Ash was happy to have a book at least. Upon arriving at the Starbase after the incident, she had been escorted by Starfleet to this room, where she had been required to stay since. In the days that followed, she was permitted to leave on occasion... When being submitted to questioning... Or medical testing... But she hadn't been allowed to visit her friends, nor had she heard anything from them in that time. Having her books provided a small distraction from her relentless thoughts in the otherwise boring silence.

As she was turning the page, she was startled by the opening of the door. Exhaling slowly, she closed her book and moved to the door, ready to follow the officer to whatever room she'd be spending the day in. Surprisingly enough, however, she found herself face-to-face with an unfamiliar ensign holding her personal belongings. "You're free to go, Miss Morgaine. You can catch a shuttle home to your family if you wish, or you can rejoin the crew of the Athena."

"The Athena? I can go back? Where should I go for that?" She didn't hesitate in her response, running back into the room and grabbing the book off her bed before jogging back out and slinging her heavy bag over her shoulder. The ensign looked uncertain, but pointed her down a hallway to the right. "Ummm... Observation Lounge 4 I think? Are you... Are you sure you want to go back? I mean-"

Ash cut the young ensign off with a glare. "You mean?" She propped her hands on her hips and looked up at the taller man with fire in her eyes and her mouth set in a thin line. He took a step backwards and muttered, "Nothing." Shaking her head, Ash started off down the hallway, determined to make it back to her crew. She needed to see if they were okay. And apologize to them... Especially Cat.

[Observation Lounge 4]

She slipped into the room and quietly stood in the corner as people began heading into the Athena-A. She stood in indecision as to whether or not she should follow them, instead taking the moment to just stare at the new ship.

[USS Athena-A - Transporter Room]

He materialized onto the newly christened Athena. The transporter chief smiled at the Vulcan on the pad.

"Welcome to the Athena, crewman," The fellow said, a portly human with a walrus mustache and thinning hair.

Mahak said nothing as he shouldered his pack. He knew the layout of the Intrepid class refit inside and out, having studied the schematics on his own time.

"Crewman Mahak, Operations." He said into the awkward silence.

"Ah, right." The chief replied. "Bet you want to get right to work, get your hands on the new sensors and communications tech."

"I will be performing my duties, chief." The Vulcan said shortly. He never understood humans and their toys. The new Athena, for all of its cutting edge technology and ability, was a mere tool. Protocol dictated that he find his new quarters, not begin fiddling about with something needlessly.

"Right. See Lieutenant Koukos, she'll get you your quarters. Welcome aboard."

(Walking Towards Turbolift)

Constance nodded to Race and gave a little smile.
She hadn't been referring to the sensors but to the ensign, but if he got something out of it for the sensors- so be it.

"Anything worth doing takes a while Gospozha. See if you can set up a fresh mental kernel from scratch and build from there." She replied to Anna and gave another polite nod.

As she talked she walked- she never had time for boring pleasantries.

She said with proper decorum as she continued to observe the onboarding process.

She spoke like a teacher as a parent/teacher confrence. She clearly had respect for Alexander but saw something more in his arrival than the others. Despite this, she was not offended but rather she seemed to find it wholly acceptable. After all- she loved the law as much as one could and having a JAG officer would, at the very least, afford her a chance to discuss it with someone knowledgeable in it.

"I'm glad," Leo replied. "I'm not mad at you. I just want to work past this and get back to the way we were. It was a bit stressful and I'm sorry if I came across a bit aggressively. I love you and don't want to lose you."

He hoped his honest would go a long way to smooth things over.

"Now, shall we make our way on board and get our quarters in order?"

[Observation Lounge 4]

Cat smiled awkwardly. Leo was all ready to sweep the last couple of weeks behind them, and pick up where they left off. Maybe he had the right of it, but she still felt emotionally fragile and unwilling to commit. She patted his arm gently, the contact jolting her with his own mixed emotions of love and uncertainty. She bit her lip before responding.

"That's probably a good idea. Why don't you go on ahead and I'll find you later?"

Her smile turned genuine when she spotted Ash entering the lounge.

Abandoning Leo for the moment, Cat ran to Ash and swept her friend up in a hug. Happiness tumbled out like a waterfall, and so did her words.

"It's so good to see you, Ash! I've been trying to come check on you, but I didn't have the right clearance or whatever."

She stood back and held her at arms length, and clucked over her like a mother hen. Her protective streak came out in full force.

"How are you feeling? Have you been eating alright? They didn't treat you rudely did they?"

Leo just stood there with a look of disappointment and hurt on his face. He wasn't sure what had happened, but he didn't want to stay on the station any longer.

He entered the new ship. It still had the smell of freshness. He didn't care though. He just wanted to get back to work since it seemed apparent that Cat was otherwise preoccupied.

He made his way to the turbolift.

"Bridge," Leo said coldly.

He arrived shortly and took his typical seat and got more acquainted with his new console.

And realizing that wasn't the case at all lifted a noticeable weight from her shoulders. As Cat pulled away and fussed over her, it almost became too much and Ash started tearing up.

"I'm fine. They treated me as well as I deserved." She had dark circles under her eyes and was a bit thinner than before, but that was less from ill treatment and more from her own stress. "I - I'm so - I'm so sorry, Cat. I never meant to do any of those things. I never wanted to hurt you - or anyone. I just - I'm sorry..." At that point what little composure she possessed cracked, and she pulled Cat into another hug, burying her face into her shoulder before Cat could see her cry.

The Captain stood in front of her chair, the stars of space turns to rays of light as the new USS Athena-A moved along at warp speeds. They had been scheduled to do a tour of the system to put the ship through her paces. No assigned mission- just run her through the checklists, though she was technically still on duty.

Constance seemed lost in thought. There were wheels turning in her mind, that much was clear, but she didn't seem to want to let anyone else in on what they might be about.

[Bridge - USS Athena-A]

Mahak stood in the Operations station, his eyes on the instruments. They were on what humans called a milk run. The etymology of the idiom slightly nettled Mahak. The proper term, per Starfleet protocol, was shakedown time. That was being tossed around, too, but the Vulcan wasn't sure why there needed to be a definition for what was a logical procedure anyway. Humans were always eager to label things.

"There is a point two variance in the warp field caused by the unneeded velocity," Mahak said in his blunt way. "Slowing to the appropriate speed would compensate."

A faint smile crossed Alex's lips as he followed the Captain. "I'm afraid you're correct, ma'am. If this was simply a case of law and protocol, I reckon they would have selected someone more...politically correct." Most people that he met or worked with seemed to instantly assume that his rank reflected upon his experience, a falsity he found himself admitting more often than he would like. "Just milk with my tea, thank you. And whenever is convenient, I know your crew's eager to set off again."

Columbus' Ops had practically done the entire outfitting, and most of the ship was well appointed, if not fairly drab. Grabbing a PADD and slipping it into his pocket, he headed for the top.

Race was simply looking around enjoying the people watching when he saw Ash slip into the viewing deck. Instantly he felt a hard lump in his throat. Ash had been Borg.

Warez was intimately familiar with the look a hunter gives it's prey. Ashley Ren Morgan had given him that look. At the time she was full of Danny's nano-probes and not in control of her actions, of course.

He still wasn't sure how the Borg molecular-machines didn't win. Since they where to continue as ship-mates, he thought he might help her suppress the Borg technology, if he could learn more about it.

Well, there was no better time to break the virtual ‘ICE' than the present. Especially given the ship's Councilor was already taking to her. Race took a deep breath and strode the distance to where two young ladies were talking.

He waited politely outside their area until most of the hugs and tears were done.he opened.
He looked both Cat and Ash in the eye, He paused. And he bowed and clicked his heals together two times before turning sharply and walking purposefully away towards the gangway to the new ship, his cheeks turning redder with each step and breath.

[Ready Room]

Constance entered her new ready room. It was bare bones- nothing in it except for the desk, terminal and a chair facing her. Most captains would spruce it up but she had always left it very spartan- like her personality. She placed a small brass sculpture of a violin on her desk, the single momento she kept with her. However, today she had a new momento. It was a single scrap, a piece of outer hull fragment of the original Athena, shaped into a Starfleet chevron.

=/\="Mr. Morgaine. Could you please bring some tea to my ready room? One ginseng with an elevated caffeine supplement, and some tea with milk."=/\=

Constance hadn't had time to talk with Ash since the events on the Borg cube. She needed to thank the girl- she'd literally saved her life.

[Computer core room]

Anastasia was amazed by how similar this ship looked, in terms of internal layout, to the old ship, and at the same time, different. It might promise twice the computational power but effectively making use of said computational power required that the homeostatic systems were properly aligned or else the multi-threading of the software may not be fully effective, and improperly coordinated gel systems could also have similar effects. Once she was handed the PADD containing the technical manual of the ship, she would examine carefully where the homeostatic systems were, or the gel systems (assembled in a neural network), if she was to align the homeostatic systems or to coordinate the gel systems neural network. She frantically and minutiously adjusted every single component of the homeostatic systems she could think of, recalling on what knowledge she had of homeostasy.

=/\= Lieutenant Warez, stand by for alignment check of the homeostatic systems =/\=

Then came the coordination of the gel systems. Unlike pattern enhancers, it wasn't quite as straightforward, from her standpoint, to know when the gel systems would be properly coordinated, unless a diagnostic check was run on the whole system. Perhaps error messages would show up on a diagnostic check if the homeostatic systems were improperly aligned and/or the gel systems were improperly cordinated.
