Personality and Quirks
Calm, soft-spoken, and passionately curious, Almar is often said to be the spitting image of his biological father. He resents this and, instead, thrives to be a confident, well-spoken, and strong man like his adopted Father. He prefers asphalt to nature and the comforts of contemporary society over camping, as well as the roar of the city or hum of an engine to the pristine silence that others hold tightly to.

At 6'1", Almar stands tall and firm, though his eyes are often cast down. He bites his lower lip when he is lost in thought.

History
Though at the time tensions between the Cardassion Union and United Federation of Planets ran high, nothing could stand between the friendship of Astor Cullen and Dahkin Dah'Elo. Astor owned and operated his own cargo freighter, dragging his eager wife and a hodgepodge crew over the Quadrant running whatever business they could get their hands on. Dahkin was a low-level Cardassian military officer, working security and the docks at a small trading and listening outpost near the Federation-Cardassian-Maqui border. It took only two deliveries to the station for Astor and Dahkin to spark a relationship. Dahkin loved a good joke and Astor loved telling them - the more inappropriate, the better.

Astor found steady work in the sector and became a regular at the station, running trade goods and personal between regions and before long the men introduced their wives to one another, hosted drunken get-togethers and formed a bond that was blind to race or politics.

Even as tensions rose with the Maqui rebellions and Cardassian actions along the border, Astor and Dahkin remained steadfast in the friendship. Though Astor often lost crew, who grew uncomfortable trading with "spoonheads", and Dahkin found himself frequently passed up for promotions by his commanding officers, the two families only grew closer with the birth of their first children, John Cullen and Almar Dah'Elo. Like their fathers the boys became inseparable.

After some years, Almar was permitted to stay with the Cullen family when they did short runs between stations or nearby planets, and it was with the Cullens that Almar first saw what warp looked like out a window or felt the hum of a warpcore in between games of hide-and-seek. It was on such a trip that Almar found himself a permanent part of the Cullen family.

By 2373 the Dominion had absorbed the Cardassian Union and trade between the Federation and its new neighbor virtually stopped over night. The Cullen's ship remained one of the few vessels that ran the routes near the border, and despite the fear of increased danger there was still, in theory, peace between the two powers. Nevertheless, Ana and Mailo agreed, for their husbands, that they would have to take a break and suspend the business. Jumping aboard his best friend's father's ship for what was supposed to be the last time, Almar waved goodbye to his parents with the promise of returning the next day from their final cargo run.

That was the day the Dominion moved against the Maqui rebellion and once-and-for-all silenced the group. Barely escaping into Federation space, the Cullen family desperately attempted to make contact with the Cardassian outpost. When their call was finally accepted they pleaded their case - they had a Cardassian child aboard - but were shocked when a Dominion officer responded, coldly, that Dahkin and Mailo were no longer available for contact. "Traitors to the Dominion and the Cardassian people are no longer tolerated," was the response.

Heartbroken, the Cullen's retreated into Federation space with their newly adopted son. The war waged on and ended, and Almar adapted well to his new surroundings. While his brother helped his father navigate, Almar joined his new mother in the engine room, learning the ins-and-outs of their little cargo ship. As the years flew by their Almar never felt put-out, and any crewmember who dared show any sign of coolness, let alone outward hatred, towards the boy was quickly fired and replaced.

Eventually the Cullen family reached out to Cardassia following the end of the war and retreat of the Dominion, seeking out any surviving family or news of their friends. Overwhelmed with their rebuilding efforts and millions of true orphans, the Union never sent back a reply. Almar grew up to respect the federation and adore his family, and when his hunger for exploration finally outgrew the confines of a cargo ship there was only one place left to go. Starfleet.

Sample post:
Almar didn't really mind being assigned to sewage and waste-reclamation maintenance duty. It was a good thing, too, because he was always assigned to this duty. The Chief personally saw it. Luckily the duty often brought him into warm spaces with a pleasant array of engineering challenges. And, most importantly, only once did he ever come in contact with any actual waste. He never spoke of that moment, though. The smell still haunted him.

"Of course," answered Almar respectfully, ignoring the happy snickers of his fellow crew mates. "I should have it repaired in about three hours."

"That long?" replied a human engineer with mock surprise.

"Exactly that long," Almar said, proudly. There was no need to put a fight. He knew for a fact he was at least twice the engineer of that fool. In truth, he was at least twice the engineer than most of the Chief's crew. Not that it did him any good - how could it, when the man had lost an actual arm in a Dominion raid all those years prior.

He retreated to the supply closet and then, tools in hand, climbed the only ladder in their small Main Engineering and made his way to the jefferies tube that led to the problem area. Almar enjoyed tight spaces but, most of all, preferred the heat from the exposed wires and exhaust tubes that ran the length of their tiny ship. With less than a hundred crew their vessel was in constant need of repairs, and the mild neglect to basic necessities was always showing. He stopped for a moment and let the heat sink in, cracking his fingers just as the blood began to flow again.

Main Engineering was always freezing, and the young was positive it was due to purposeful tampering of the environment controls - not that he would ever dare to check. There was a pleasant hum coming up from the grav-plating and the Cardassian synchronized his breathing to its pulse.

An hour passed and he was hard at working repairing a loose panel. The ship shook so much when it jumped to warp that too-often bolts just popped off. No one seemed to think this as big a deal as Almar, though, so he said nothing. The space was a tight squeeze, and he had took jam both hands at an awkward angle to keep his tool steady. He was halfway done with tightening the bolt when the ship shook violently.

The klaxon shrieked through his tiny hallway and the captain's voice came overhead. "All hands report to battle stations." A moment later another explosion rocked the ship and Almar's tool, and the panel's bolt, fell to the floor and vanished. He gave a heavy sigh, an unwelcome but familiar smell confronting him.

"Great," he muttered to himself, desperately searching for his lost possessions.

Almar,

A very nice application!

Our greatest need at the moment is in Ops.

I have an opening on the Starbase.

Would that work for you?

Please let us know,

Kirok

PS - Would you like to take the Enlisted Training Class right away or hold off a bit (it is a short class that helps you acclimate to posting here ;-)?

Thanks! Excited!

Ops on a Starbase seems well enough! Let me know the next steps.

And sure, I can take the class now, no bother.

Hi Almar,

I was actually going to join with a Cardassian character initially, so I had dug this avatar out of my old files. But if it is better suited to your character, please feel free to use it! Otherwise just ignore this message :)

Regards

Adami.
