Season 7, Mission 08: Command Decisions
« on: October 24, 2011, 06:11:12 pm »
Scott was sat at his desk in his quarters, sipping on a mug of coffee, going over his morning reports. He still had a few hours before he was on duty, and he was relaxing in his pyjamas. This was a more relaxing morning than most, but he still felt it necessary to go over the happenings on his ship. As he pressed a few buttons to apply his signature to the work orders for the day, he was very aware of the noise. His room was very quiet, and he did not wish to wake Riley, who was asleep in the adjacent bedroom.  She always liked to lie in longer than Scott did.

As he took another sip, he felt the warm liquid make its way down his throat. The caffeine hit having its desired effect. He looked at his desk, still a few more pads to go, most likely requests from the astronomy department to gain more time on the main sensor array, as the Discovery was busy exploring a Binary Star system.

"...initiating micro-cellular scan." Alyssa said to the young lady as she placed her finger onto the pad. At first there was an image, it was the overall finger and one could barely make out the finger print. A small green horizontal light appeared at the tip of the finger and continued to the base of it, gathering all the available information that the finger was keeping stowed away. The image began to zoom in, becoming more and more detailed with every magnification. It continued to zoom in until the outlines of cells were visible.

The young lady had been complaining about a constant pain and sickness. Alyssa had tried every test in the book, yet this one was the only one that had wanted to work for her. It seemed like all of the medical items had begun to plot against her, to make her job much more stressful and irritating.

There was a strange occurrence in the cellular makeup. As Alyssa examined this, she raised an eyebrow in perplexion. Something wasn't adding up. There was a tinge to the cells that didn't belong there and upon further testing it had appeared that the glowing had appeared at around the same time as the sickness and pain had. It was obvious that it was radiation poisoning and that the girl had contracted it recently. The only problem was that Alyssa had no idea how the girl got it.

"Stay here."  Alyssa said as she typed the information onto a pad. "I'm scheduling the next few minutes to get this issue treated. Make yourself comfortable on the biobed. I'll just be a minute."

Shelaf sat on one of the bridge stations, nursing a warm cup of coffee and monitoring the outside world. The quiet space surrounding the Discovery sped by and he gazed out of the main viewscreen at the two orbiting balls of gas.

"You'd think after this many years you'd get bored..." He mused to himself.

" Bored of this? Never. It makes a nice change of pace though, not having anyone shooting at us. "

Alyssa did several scans on the girl to reassure that the tricorders were not faulty. Nodding to herself as she read the display, she reached for the hypospray filled with hyronalin. She injected the substance into the girls next and then did a double take with the tricorder. The readings were still high but they slowly began to diminish. It would probably take a few hours with several more injections to completely rid of the radiation.

"Here." Alyssa said to the young girl as she grabbed another device from her small side table. She placed the device, a cortical stimulator, on the temple of the girl's head. "I will keep an interface between this and the sickbay console in order to check your vital signs while you are away."

The girl muttered a word of gratitude before getting up to leave. She was still looking a tad sickly, but a whole lot better than when she had entered.

Alyssa watched her leave, sighed, and turned around. That was when her heart skipped a beat. As she turned she stared right into the face of a dark figure. She let out a gasp of fear and tripped over herself, faceplanting the floor. She closed her eyes in hopes that she was just seeing things and laid there for a moment. After her moment of silence she opened her eyes and began to move.

Turning herself over to see the ceiling, her heart skipped another beat. It had not been a trick of light after all. the thing was crouched down and facing her. It was mouthing something to her and spoke in a very soft, yet eerie, whisper.

"You have...." was all that it said before it turned its head towards the door and vanished. Trisha entered a moment later and dropped the padd she was carrying.

Lee chuckled along.

" When does that ever happen? "

the two shared a further laugh.

" So, how's things with the Mrs? Haven't seen much of Safi lately. "

Seth sighed lazily, as often was his habit upon doing nothing. He was walking around at a casual pace through the ships winding corridors, nursing a cup of black coffee. Each bitter sip reminded him that he dispised the taste, yet he was feeling abnormally cold and drowsy so he thought it might perk him up a bit. The thought occured to him to go to sickbay but he drowsily shook his head to himself and continued on his destination-less walk, past the holodecks and towards the Mess Hall. He could use a sit down, after all he thought.

As Alyssa struggled to get up, Trisha arrived at her side. "Are you alright?" Trisha asked her superior officer in a concerned tone as she placed a hand on her shoulder and stared at her. It was the same tone that she had used when Alyssa had woken up from that nightmare a few months ago.

"Yeah," Alyssa said, "I'm fine." She brushed the hair out of her face before dusting off the dirt. She thought it had stopped after her transfer to the Discovery, but now it was back. She knew it wasn't real, but it never had spoken to her before. It scared her, scared her to know that it would never leave her.. "I need a break. You have the floor." She removed Trisha's hand off of her shoulder and left the room.

Scott had gotten ready and left his quarters. Riley was still there as she was off duty today. However Scott had first watch and decided to go grab some fresh coffee from the messhall. It was strange, replicated coffee and real coffee where essentially the same. But like most people, he could just feel the difference in the drink. He got lost in recalling some other meals which weren't quite right, when he found himself walking alongside Crewman Sinclaire.

" Morning Sinclaire, what do you hear? "

Seth perked his head up and twisted his neck to face Commander Bradley with a slight look of suprise; he seemed to have appeared from nowhere in his daydreaming wander. He cleared his throat before speaking groggily with his morning voice.

"Not much, patrol, routine, everyone doing their job. How have you been, sir?"

He felt slightly surprised at the Commander's casual inquiery and he felt slightly at ease. Although he couldn't quite tell whether it was from his drowsy state, the bitter coffee, the Commander's attitude or a mixture of all three. Whatever the reason, he felt quite relaxed.

Connor walked out onto the Engineering deck. The familiar blue glow of the warp core played across the room's surfaces, offset by the bright yellows and blues of the LCARs displays on the engineering consoles. Connor wandered over to the main console, playing his hand over the controls, then raising it self-consciously to the hollow pip on his collar.

Only just a junior grade lieutenant, and commanding the engineering section of such a powerful vessel. Under his command was one of the most destructive energies over discovered by humanity, chained to the will of a huge starship. The weight of the responsibility settled on his shoulders. If he messed up, he could kill everyone.

Connor was jerked out of his reverie by a crewman, who ran up to him.

"Sir. Got the results of the calibration you asked for." The crewman handed over a PADD, then his eyes slid to Connors collar. "And congratulations, sir." Connor nodded and smiled at the crewman, then reviewed the PADD. The compression and injection rate of the deuterium compressor was slightly off. He'd have to fix it. He set the PADD down, straightened up and walked off.

Back to work...

" Can't complain. After recent events I'm just glad we have some relatively quite days ahead. How have things been with the enlisted crew, after the abductions? "

Scott smiled, he had gotten to know Sinclaire better than most of the enlisted crew. He was cool under fire and reliable. Someone Scott could depend on.
