Character Family:

Father - Ambassador Khanar Trilarck [Acting ambassador of Halii to the United Federation of Planets.]
Mother - Megarrah Trilarck [Philanthropist, society wife. Deceased.]
Brother - Twin brother [Stillbirth. Deceased.]

Character Bio:

The marriage between Khanar and Megarrah was not one based in love but was an arrangement by two high ranking societal families. Although they were familiar with each other through various events hosted by other noble families, they had barely spoken more than five words to each other. In order to keep bloodlines and societal standing strong, the marriage accord was struck between the families, blending city with country. While Khanar hailed from the capitol city of Halii, Megarrah hailed from the countryside and knew a more rural way of life. Khanar was destined for a life of politics and diplomacy, a mantle that was preordained for him, a burden that made him feel restless throughout his youth. As he settled into his secondary schooling, he slowly began to succumb to the idea that his life would be filled with great purpose. The Haliians were in need of a leader that could help strengthen ties between the Haliians and the other planets of the Alpha Quadrant. Once his secondary schooling was complete, he knew the next direction for the rest of his life. Marriage.

Megarrah was allowed to finish her secondary schooling as well and obtained a degree in Agricultural Studies and Government, knowing these skills would help her support her husband in his quest to provide for his family. They were merely strangers in a loveless marriage, barely speaking unless spoken to, but their sense of duty to their familiar bonds and country superseded their basic needs for affection. In public, the two Haliians put on a brave face at societal galas and functions that were hosted by the elite class, creating an image that was far removed from the truth. What they lacked in love, they made up in respect and admiration for one another, a familiarity existed between the two that grew into a fondness. Megarrah found her days filled by serving various committees that pursued a philanthropic agenda, discovering a bit of purpose in her mundane life while her husband's career trajectory continued to rise in government.

Khanar was poised to become Prime Minister of Halii after he had completed four terms as Magnus (Mayor) of the capitol city when he heard rumors that a position was opening up on Earth. Upon hearing of a vacancy for the ambassador position for Halii, the same familiar pang of unrest began to ache in Khanar's stomach. Although living a life of great purpose was pleasant enough, a part of him longed to etch out his own destiny and he applied for the position. Upon receiving news that he was accepted as Halii's ambassador, he informed his wife. While Megarrah was upset with the news of having to leave her homeland to travel to a strange and distant world, a spark of inspiration kept her hopeful. She would convince her husband to begin a family in order to feel that connection with another human being that was severely lacking in her relationship. Perhaps a family would help her strengthen her bond with her husband and alleviate the mundanity that had wracked her life, leaving her without a feeling of purpose.

Upon arrival to San Francisco, Khanar submitted to the will of his wife and agreed to begin a family. The newly appointed Ambassador believed that the optics of having a Haliian child reared on Earth would solidify his relations with the United Federation of Planets. After familiarizing themselves with human customs, their lives continued; days spent working for the Federation and nights spent at galas and commencement ceremonies. Soon enough, Megarrah found out that she was not only pregnant but with twins. She was elated upon hearing that she would give birth to two children who she would be able to mold and grow to love. On the day that she was set to give birth, everything seemed to be going without a hitch. However, during labor, complications began to arise, but due to their strict Haliian customs regarding childbirth, surgery was not an option. The heartbreak of having to deliver a child who was no longer living was overwhelming for Megarra causing all of her hearts to seize and she passed away mid-delivery, leaving only a daughter in her wake.

Calandra was born on November 6th, a cold day in San Francisco, without a mother and with a father who felt indifferent towards her. The daughter of the Ambassador grew up around caretakers who waited on her hand and foot while attending the best schools that money had to offer. Although a bit aloof, Calandra was very disciplined when it came to her schooling, knowing that a career in diplomacy and government would be carved out for her by her father. Due to her father's position, she spent half of her year on starships as she traveled with her father and his entourage as they helped strengthen ties between the Haliians and other planets on behalf of the United Federation of Planets. It was then that her burgeoning interest in politics and diplomacy began to grow, devoting herself to her studies, devouring all the information that she could find on the cultures of different species that the databases had to offer. When meeting foreign diplomats, Calandra found herself used as a prop by her father and the Federation, impressing dignitaries with her knowledge. However, the pomp and circumstance of her life was boring and left her with a feeling of emptiness that she could not quite explain.

Rebellion was beginning to stir within Calandra's heart. On her seventeenth birthday, Calandra was introduced to her housekeeper's son, Michael, who attended the urban high school at the opposite side of San Francisco. Calandra was fascinated with how the other half lived and as they continued spending time together, the daughter of the Ambassador found herself starting to fall for the young man. Unbeknownst to her, Michael was a member of the Maquis underground, who recruited other disgruntled teenagers to serve outside of Starfleet. Michael introduced her to several Maquis rebels and Calandra began to feel a deep sense of belonging, of wanting to experience a life that existed outside the confines of what had already been set in place by her familiar standing. Calandra became an informant for the Maquis, using information that was privy to her due to being a diplomat's daughter and passed it along the rebel using encoded transmissions. While her role was primarily behind the scenes as to not alert the attention of her father, as the year passed, she found herself longing for the day where she could immerse herself fully into the Maquis.

Khanar was beginning to pester his daughter, reminding her that she must serve in Starfleet and that the deadline was approaching for her to submit an application. Calandra had convinced her father that after her graduation, she would return to Halii for a year's sabbatical in order to get to spend some time with her people. After the year's time, she would return to San Francisco and pursue a career in Starfleet, to help strengthen her family's ties to the Federation. This was a ruse. On the eve after her graduation she slipped past the guards of her estate and made her way with Michael to a freighter that was set to rendezvous with a Maquis raider, Gavroche, hidden in an asteroid belt masked by the Bajoran moon, Jerrado. Calandra disappeared into obscurity as her father believed that she was kidnapped, awaiting to hear a ransom demand by some disgruntled citizen. The truth was much more sinister.

Calandra immersed herself into the Maquis way of life, never once using her name or father's position to her advantage. In fact, she grew an icy demeanor as a way of protecting herself in fear that she would be abducted due to her standing. Growing up on starships had given her a small advantage and she proved to be a trusty adviser to the captain of the Gavroche. The Maquis found her indispensable and Calandra found herself under the tutelage of a Vulcan dissident, who helped to train her and expand her empathetic abilities. During a skirmish that broke out on a Cardassian transport ship that was smuggling the bodies of dead colonists in order to conduct experiments on the corpses, Calandra watched as Michael was killed by a Cardassian security officer. After picking up his phaser, setting it to kill, she watched as the Cardassian collapsed to the ground before vowing to herself that she would never kill in cold blood again. It was that day that Calandra felt every wall that she had started to build for herself rise up around her hearts, guarding her emotions in fear of experiencing grief ever again.

Calandra was useful in areas of intelligence, reconnaissance, and a master interrogator, using her skills in diplomacy in order to extract information in order to help further Maquis causes. The Maquis believed she would best be utilized on Earth, working with the underground as a recruiter due to her skills of negotiation. She was transferred to the Maquis transport, Eponine and as they were making their way to rendezvous with another freighter, the ship was intercepted by a Federation starship that abducted the "traitors" and transported them to Earth in order to be interrogated then thrown into jail. After her identity was revealed, Calandra was sequestered from the rest of the Maquis crew until she was reunited with her father. Kharan was ashamed of his daughter but felt partially guilty that his lack of affection caused his daughter to explore this dark route. After pleading with the United Federation of Planets to expunge her record, the Federation decided that Calandra would be an asset to Starfleet due to her Maquis experience and they conceded to his request.

At first, Calandra was furious with her father, remembering all of the days he spent acting indifferent towards her in private but praising her in public. That level of apathy stirred within every fiber of her being when she confronted him. When she questioned him as to why he vouched for her, Kharan used her mother's canar in order to reveal his guilt and his unrequited love for her mother. Her rage continued to burn hot as he shared his memories of her mother, confused as to why he never confessed his love for her, for Megarrah might have lived if she had something to live for. She snatched the canar from his hand and shattered it against the ground before reluctantly agreeing to join Starfleet. Disregarding his daughter's wrath, he collected the pieces of the canar and fashioned the remaining pieces into a set of earrings and a hair clip, which she would receive upon graduation.

Calandra breezed through her time at Starfleet Academy, already having the experience of serving with the Maquis. She excelled in areas of diplomacy, xenolinguistics, psychology, basic psychiatry, sociology and the sciences. However, her weakness in combat caused her to have to repeat several courses and although she was disinterested, for the sake of graduating, she passed her finals and went on to graduate. On her graduation day, her father presented her with the earrings and the hair pin that he made, proclaiming how proud he was to have a daughter who could redeem herself, yet the resentment that she felt towards him never ceased. Ambassador Khanar also informed her that she would join his office at the embassy and that her place was not on a starship. Calandra believed his reasoning were jaded since she had fled at such an early age and the ambassador wanted to keep tabs on his daughter, monitoring her in case she contacted AWOL Maquis dissidents.

Calandra was content enough for several years, working at Starfleet Headquarters with her father but upon hearing through the pike that a position was opening up on a starship, Calandra jumped at the chance to transfer but knew that she would have to be discreet. The position was for a ship's counselor and although she was not one to make small talk with her crew, Calandra knew that this opening was her way out to explore space and escape her father's watchful eye. When her paperwork was accepted, she tendered her resignation to her father. While he disagreed, he knew better than to push his luck with the Federation by trying to sabotage his daughter's attempt to leave his sight. With her records sealed off to only commanding officers, she was ready to embark on her journey to explore the great unknown.

Sample post:

Calandra bit her lip in thought as she stared at herself in the mirror of her shared quarters. Her rearing had taught her that appearance was paramount and this was a lesson that she carried until this day. With meticulous precision, she scooped up curls of her dark chestnut hair and continued to tuck the loose strands into the pin that clipped her hair at the back. She adjusted the bottom half of her Starfleet tunic and brushed off of her sleeves before inspecting herself one last time in the mirror. Straightening up her spine, she knew that if she continued to be critical of her appearance, she would never make it to her meeting in time. Days where she could flex her expertise in First Contact where few and far in between, most days she spent working with the Doctors in Sickbay or in rarer occasions, she would work with the science officers, assisting in various tasks, lending her knowledge when she could.

With a final sigh signaling that she was finished, she gave herself one last inspection before pivoting on the heel of her boot and scooping up her PADD from her bed. In another fell swoop, she reached for her tricorder and tucked it into the holster of her belt. Upon reaching the threshold, the door to her quarters slid open automatically and she stepped outside to the bustling corridor. According to her calculations, Calandra had given herself just enough time that she would arrive three minutes before her duty shift was set to begin. Another officer did not have such a luxury as he rammed into her mid-sprint down the hallway, looking back with a pathetic yet apologetic look in his eye as he continued to make his way across the hallway, then disappearing before he rounded the corner. Her eyes narrowed in disdain as she rubbed her throbbing shoulder before rolling it back several times while the pain quickly subsided.

Calandra listened to the clicking of her boot as she tried to refocus her thoughts, her lips pursed to the side as she continued to mentally organize herself. The familiar of hiss of the turbolift doors opening filled her ears, interrupting her thoughts. She stepped inside, "Bridge," she called out, devoid of any emotion in her voice. As the turbolift began to slide down, she opened up her PADD in order to retrieve the information that she had gathered about their nomadic visitors, the Vraq, scanning all of the intel she had received after being debriefed. Her lips curled up into a sneer as she once again processed what she was reading, mentally trying to prepare herself to not make a fool out of herself in front of the Dinosyus, the head of their tribe, who was seen as a religious figure due to his skills as the sole playwright and composer of the species.

From what she had gathered, the Vraq, were a nomadic species of aliens, who culture was deeply steeped in providing entertainment, or what Starfleet would consider entertainment. For the Vraq, putting up plays and concerts was in reverence to their deities and they believed they were providing a cathartic experience to those who paid to see them. The Vraq had been rescued by her starship after a fee dispute caused them to anger a Klingon warlord, who chased them out of Qo'nos. The Vraq also secreted serotonin out of their pores, causing anyone they came in contact with to experience unintentional elation. They were a jovial band of minstrels and their greetings included what was similar to a hug, but involved the Vraq splaying their seven fingered hands over the face of those that they greeted.

As the turbolift began to slow down, she turned the PADD off, looking at her reflection once again. She watched as her sneer began to morph into a jovial smile. Calandra couldn't recall the last time that she had smiled that large and her mind began to wander to that time, completely ignoring the voice that had interrupted her thoughts. "Wow, Trilarck. I've never seen you smile before. I don't like it," one of the Ops officers remarked.

Her face completely fell into a scowl. "Don't worry, after today, you'll never have to look at it again," she said simply, her eyes glistening with hints of contempt. She inhaled sharply and once again, plastered that artificial smile and made her way towards the front of the bridge in order to meet the Vraq with a minute to spare.

Additional information:

Calandra is very reserved, calculated, and can be perceived as distant. For the most part, she does not speak unless she is spoken to first. Every response is measured and calculated and her reputation for being aloof has often given her the nickname of 'Ice Princess'. The daughter of the Ambassador is a bit of an actress, though, when it comes to First Contact and dealing with foreign dignitaries. She is able to immerse herself in their culture, giving them a false sense of familiarity that allows her to gain the trust of other species. Her sense of loyalty runs deep once you have broken through her barriers and asserted yourself as someone who she can trust.

At first glance, the perception is that Calandra is ill equipped to be a ship's counselor. Her distant demeanor can be off-putting but she does her function well. With the help of the Vulcan dissident aboard the Maquis raider, her empathetic abilities are slightly more enhanced than the average Haliian. Outside of the realm of empathy, she is also a natural lie detector, hooking into the combination of emotions when one tells the truth versus when one lies. She uses this ability in order to relate to the officers aboard her ship. What she lacks in a warm demeanor, she makes up in her abilities to listen effectively and carry out her duties.

Her record was sealed and expunged. No one aboard the ship knows about her Maquis affiliation except for the Commanding/Executive officers aboard. Unbeknownst to the crew, she is allowed to carry her canar in the form of the earrings and the hair clip that she received. At times, you can see her fiddling with her earring, which activates the canar in order to extract memories. The memories are more like flashes of insight since the crystal has been shattered. She is only allowed to use the canar at the discretion of her captain or if explicitly allowed by another crewmember.

All good, Kirok, take your time and keep me posted!

Enlisted training sounds dandy to me.

I'm the worst with graphics so a double yes to the help in appearance. The actress is Marion Cotillard by the way, in case you don't want to use that image. I'll make a face claim shortly.

Welcome to the fleet!

I'm the Enlisted Persons Course (EPC) instructor. Because you're new here, you are required to pass the EPC to demonstrate your Trek knowledge, RP skills, and understanding of posting requirements. It helps you get familiar with Shadow Fleet style and be eligible for promotions, and gives you something to do until you get active in a game. :) It's pretty simple, you can write what you like for it within the prompts, and work at your own pace, but it's better to do it quickly.

Your Level One EPC starts here:
