Shuttle Bay

Kyle had finished up the assignments for the Bridge crew and made his way to the Shuttle Bay. He entered and found his group off to one side, with crew members busily bustling around each shuttle making last minute preparations. He caught site of Liv standing next to the Scobee. This would be their main ride while the others were manned by the rest of his team. He was still looking for Chief Mulchano. Being new to the Challenger, Kyle hadn't had much chance to talk to and get to know the Enlisted man. As Kyle approached Liv, he noticed the PADD in her hands. She was no doubt doing exactly what he would be doing. Checking the readiness of their shuttles and the supplies they would be carrying.

"Hey. How's it looking?" he asked trying to stay professional.

[Shuttle - Scobee]

Liv had been busy checking the supply crates against the checklist she had made on the PADD as she liked to be organised and certainly wasn't going to sign off of anything unless she knew that everything was correct and nothing was left behind. She did this for all three shuttles that were part of the Gemini group and had just signed off the Jarvis and Smith as completed when she heard her husband's voice from behind her.

She turned and smiled at him, knowing that he had to be professional even though she would like nothing more than for him to scoop her up into one of his famous strong hugs but that could wait until they were alone again. She was pleased that she was getting to help out with aiding the planet below and even though it was another water world this time she wasn't wearing a dress to meet with royalty but black pants and a pale blue shirt something practical.

" Hey you and its looking good all supplies and rations are aboard all three shuttles and I'm just about to sign off the Scobee as being complete " she replied looking down at her PADD for a moment to add her thumbprint receiving a beep for confirmation.

" That's everything done and I'm ready when you are " she said as she moved closer to him.

Lek

[Shuttlepod Chaffee]

Lek sat next to Ensign Oveur and waited for the captain to give the order for Apollo group to launch. As he waited, not unlike what he'd begun to do with the Challenger, he absently tinkered with the Chaffee's shielding.

"I wish we would start already, the sooner we start, the sooner this will be over. Normally, I don't mind waiting, but when you know deep in your gut that a mission is going to go horribly bad, it makes every second of it torture. I get that most Starfleet missions have things that go wrong, but they at least have the decency to be unexpected complications. This mission is expected complications simply waiting for some fool to fly into it."

He sighed and continued to tinker and waited for the inevitable disaster to happen.

[Shuttle Resnik]

As the pilot called out the pre-flight checks, Rayek confirmed the proper readiness and called back his affirmation.

The Resnik pilot continued with the checks, until all was clear.  Only then did the man open a channel.  "Resnik to McAuliffe.  We are green for departure."

Rayek turned to glance back to the two medical Techs.  "I would advise the use of your seat restraints as we are likely to encounter severe turbulence."

He then readied himself and waited for Dr. Vaughan's order.

Shuttle McAuliffe

Lizzie gave a nod.

=/\= Received Resnik. Soyuz flight, please stand by. =/\=

She closed the channel and opened up another one.

=/\= Shuttle control, this is Shuttle McAuliffe. Soyuz flight requesting permission to depart. =/\=

"Great job. Thank you." Kyle said as he led her onto the Scobee. "We'll take this one down. Chief Mulchano will be in the Jarvis and Lieutenant Donahue will pilot the Smith." He went about doing the preflight check. When all was done, he contacted the other shuttles in his group. Both reported ready. Now they were playing the waiting game.

"I want you buckled in and safe." he said as he turned to Liv. "It's gonna be dangerous down there." He released a sigh. "I almost went to the Captain and asked you not be sent." he said, being honest with her.

[Shuttlebay]

Dylan arrived in the shuttlebay, and saw the crew they had gathered, ready to go. He had arrived just in time to hear Ensign Oveur's excited tones, followed by Lek's perpetually pissed-off pessimist voice. He strode over behind the Ferengi, not saying a word. He smiled as he spoke. "You're quite right, Ensign. This will be quite the experience. Are you sure you're up to the task?" he asked, as he learned from a passing deckhand what Loginoff had said. It made him smirk. And plot, of course.

"Alright, everyone! Let's load up! Our window is closing!" he said, as he hefted the last box for his pod and moved his way toward the cramped compartment.

[Shuttle Grissom]

Dylan paused before he entered the shuttlepod's control cabin. The shuttle was rather ominously named. It was obviously named for Gus Grissom, former North American astronaut who had been in command of the first planned mission for the newly-formed Apollo program... and the Commander of Apollo 1, an exercise that had cost the lives due to poor planning and rushed development of all three men. Dylan had to wonder here, was he leading another crew to their deaths with this name?

Skirting a hurricane was theoretically possible, but the last telemetry indicated failing systems and a need for immediate evacuation from beneath the surface of the Planet. If anyone was going, Dylan was. He climbed aboard, and looked to his pilot. The woman was a skilled pilot named Margaret Edmondson. "Ready?" he asked her, as he keyed the comms systems.

=/\= All shuttles, depart and form up in your groups. We don't stop until we reach the station- no looking back. We've got one shot at this- let's make it count, people. The station is relying on us. =/\= he said, before looking at Edmondson. "There's 480 kilometers to the Ocean, we've got a full tank of deuterium, relief supplies, it's wet, and we're flying a shuttlepod..." he said, before breaking into a ridiculous grin.

"Hit it."

The shuttle lifted off, flying out of the now-opened shuttlebay doors and forming up just outside the shields of Challenger, as the crew got a good look at the disaster they had just walked into. Dylan sighed. He had to find some way to keep crew morale up, and there was one way he'd learned best to do that. Some of that old time rock 'n' roll.

He pressed a button. =/\= Computer... access historical musical database. Earth Year 1979. =/\= he instructed the computer. He pressed a few buttons, and in all of the Challenger's craft, a song began to play.

The music began to blare as the shuttles began to streak toward the surface. He turned down the music as he began to speak again. =/\= All flights, check-in. =/\=

Shuttle McAuliffe

At the Captain's order all the shuttles lifted off and headed straight out of the shuttle bay. Her shuttle was flying point with the other two about 100 meters on either side and slightly to their rear. Once she had visually checked the other two shuttles were in position. As soon as the music started, she gave a smile before opening a channel.

=/\= Soyuz flight to Captain. We are in position and heading to the eye of the hurricane. ETA 2 minutes. =/\=

She then closed the channel and opened up another.

She then turned to Loginoff.

"Take us in Chief. Steady as she goes."

Lek winced at the captain's choice of music and wondered again if all hyoomons were dropped on their head's as infants. Lek wasn't certain about the motivations of the others, but he certainly wasn't in a hurry to discover what the Vault of Eternal Destitution looked like yet. Ensign Oveur could barely restrain his eagerness to dive into the whirling maelstrom that was waiting to swallow them whole and it was all Lek could do not to slap him in the back of his head.

When the music blared over the comms, Rayek seemed a tad bit surprised and glanced to the pilot in question.  The man merely chuckled and started nodding his head in time to the beat of the music.

For the first few lines, Rayek tried to catch the meaning of the song but the manner in which it was sung made the lyrics near impossible to decipher; all that he could really understand was the chorus... which in itself seemed rather self-explanatory.  Maybe he didn't need to understand the whole of the lyrics to get the gist of the song?

By the second round of the chorus, Rayek's own head was bobbing along to the rather motivating heavy drum beat.

While the pilot flew the shuttle into position behind and to the left of the McAuliffe,  he gestured for Rayek to reply to the Captain's check in request.  Rayek obliged. "Shuttle Resnik. Soyuz team. Ready."

Afterwards, he pondered the conflicting orders received  - Á¢â,¬Ëœno looking back' vs Á¢â,¬Ëœdo not hesitate to head home'.  His own training and experience had him inclined to follow the Captain's initial orders both in that the Captain had rank and that it suited Rayek's personal mindset a bit more than retreating back to the Challenger if problems did arise.

One of Rayek's favorite Terran quotes came to mind as the shuttle began its descent with the others.  Á¢â,¬ËœStrength doesn't come from what you can do, it comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn't.'  This mission might certainly test their strength.

Liv smiled when he thanked her " You know how much I like to be organised " she replied as he led her onto the Scobee nodding when he explained who would be taking each shuttle before sitting down in the seat just behind him. When he then told her to buckle up and stay safe, she appreciated his concern and understood the risks that awaited them of the surface. She also appreciated his honesty when he confessed that he almost went to the Captain and asked for her not to be sent. It was just another reason why their marriage worked so well and why they were so suited for one another.

" I understand babe why you almost did as I know you worry about me but I'm glad I got to do this with you instead of waiting up on the ship pacing the room until you return " she answered just as honestly before the Captain's voice piped through the comm and Kyle then turned and asked if she was all set. " I am " she replied as the myriad of shuttles started to exit the ship and began their descent to the planet below.

Grinning at the Captain's choice of song that played and could see both the funny side and irony of such a song given the situation they were about to go into but still enjoyed the boost to morale. Listening to the chatter between the shuttles also made Liv realise how happy she was to be able to participate in such a mission that she had a purpose and yes she knew Kyle cared about her and didn't want to put her at risk and protect her and that's why she loved him, thankful that she had someone like that.

The shuttlecraft had seemed less cramped and threatening when she was watching Mulchano and Lek modify one. Now that she was actually seated inside with all the hatches sealed, it felt like a coffin.

Bad mental imagery, think of pleasant things. Like bunnies or kittens. She mentally chided herself. Bunnies or kittens.

It hadn't taken her long to return Trip and Archer to her quarters where they would keep out of trouble. While she was there, she switched to her waterproof knee high boots and double checked her away team medkit. It never hurt to be prepared for the worst. Her thoughts returned to the present, and the hypospray of anti-nausea medicine she clenched in her fist. Flights in a shuttle never made her sick, but on the water, her stomach contents tended to revisit.

Lieutenant Orkan Tzak got the shuttle in motion and followed in line. He looked back to check on Cat, who had managed while completely strapped into place, to bring her knees up to her chest in the chair.

"You ok, Dr. Maddux. You look a little green. Sure you're not part Orion?" he inquired, with a bit of a cheeky grin. He found humor tended to take the edge off nerves. For a moment, despite his blue skin and antennae, Catrin was reminded of her favorite pilot, Leo Scott, and she smiled despite her reservations.

"I'll be fine, no worries, Lt. Tzak. And you can just call me Cat if you want. It's gonna be just us in this flying fish for a while anyways."

"As you wish, Cat. I'm fine with you calling me Orkan." He smiled and turned to the flight controls.

"This is gonna be a weird question, but I've always wondered, do your antennae move reflexively or do you move them like you would a finger?" If she didn't ask now, it was going to bug her the whole flight/dive.

Orkan kept his back to her but the antennae in question twitched in mirth. "The answer is both, Curious Cat." She couldn't see his face, but the smile in his voice was obvious.

The counselor debated how ready she actually was, but kept her commentary to herself. She would definitely let Dylan know her thoughts on his taste in music later though. One hand clutching the hypo, and the other's nails dug into the armrest of the chair. This was going to be an adventure.

Bonnie nodded at Rhymus and pulled her restraint down, fastening herself in tightly and looking forward out the view screen. She breathed out slowly, trying to calm herself as the shuttle set off for the surface of the planet.

When the shuttle got out of the bay and the planet was in view, Bonnie's reaction was one of amazement. She raised herself up so she could get a better view and smiled in amazement. "The true potential of what nature can do to a planet, it's amazing. And beautiful." Bonnie paused for a moment. "It's a shame, what impact it's had on the people, though." Bonnie finished.

McNair

[Shuttle McNair]

Rhymus made a few final checks before opening a channel with the Captain.

He then looked out where Bonnie was looking, down to the massive hurricanes.

"There is a strange beauty in power, is there not? I remember reading that long ago, back on earth, people would armor their vehicles and go charging into weather like this. Tornados, hurricanes, and the like, and study them up close. Many gave their lives to see the raw power nature could unleash. It almost makes you wish you were born before the weather control system went up..."

He turned to look at her, smirking.

"Almost."

Lek

[Shuttlepod Chaffee]

Lek gripped the arms of the seat as he fought to keep his eyes open as the Chaffee entered the atmosphere and tossed the tiny pod about like a piece of straw.

"I will not close my eyes, I will not give this child pilot the satisfaction of seeing me be afraid."

He wailed internally as he glanced at Ensign Oveur who fought the controls with a look of absolute joy on his face.

"He's insane, all Hyoomons are insane."

Lek continuously monitored the structural integrity field and the shields and hoped beyond hope that the modifications would hold.
