Rayek, who had been expecting some manner of discussion about the self-assessment he had just provided, was a bit put-off by the sudden change of topic.   It took a moment for him to change gears from 3rd person perspective back to 1st.

"Yes," he answered thinking of Lek... which reminded him of the letter he'd last sent the Ferengi - admitting to him of having tried to read his mind and potentially passing on what could be a lethal disease.  Lek's had reply had arrived nearly three weeks ago yet that was about when Saqa7 had first left .. and Rayek at the time wasn't in any frame of mind to learn that Lek was through with being his friend as well, so the Romulan hadn't dared open it. "Well, perhaps...  I hope so."

Beja hadn't been sure what he had meant by the answer that 'perhaps' he had a best friend, which had almost negated the affirmative answer of yes he had given initially to her question. She wanted to pursue that more, but didn't feel that now was the right moment to do so. She hadn't wanted to overwhelm the commander with too many questions or bombard him with an overloading of issues. It was always best to tackle things one at a time, and slowly over time. Otherwise a person would get too overwhelmed with it all, and break down or worse.

Tell me, how do you think your best friend would assess your job performance?’Beja asked Rayek. Captain Solluk probably didn't realize just how in a way he as lucky to have Rayek as his right hand Romulan. Solluk couldn't have ever been as critical as Rayek was of himself.

Beja's question had him puzzled for a moment.  He'd never considered how Lek might view his work before.  He did recall that prior to their falling out Lek had been in full support of his promotion and had tried to encourage him to believe in his own abilities when he was first uncertain after Mondo's incident.

"I suppose if he were still feeling kindly towards me, he would likely say that I was doing as good as any might given the situation. If not feeling kindly because I recently betrayed his trust then he would likely describe me and any of my work as sneaky and maladaptive."

Despite the clearly insulting descriptives, Rayek smiled a bit wistfully, almost fondly.  Lek could certain call it straight, he wished the Ferengi were here to help him find his way.

"It sounds like there is truth in all of that, and that seems to be the nearest to the most truthful and honest assessment that you have told me," Beja responded to the commander. In fact the small smile that Rayek had on his face, told her than any words could have. It also gave her an idea of what he could be working on.

Beja continued, "I have some homework for you commander. I'd like for you to try and make a new friend. Make a real effort to learn about someone on the station, and put yourself out there in return. Try and be vulnerable, and reach out to someone in friendship."

"In our next session, you can tell me how it went, and we can discuss it in depth next time," Beja smiled over at Rayek. She knew that if he could find a new person to connect to, it would be beneficial to him, not just professionally but personally. Sometimes it was having that support system in place that allowed people to reach their highest success in life.

At Beja's comment about his 'most truthful and honest assessment' Rayek hesitated. He was unsure what she had been trying to get across with that statement.   Was she suggesting that he had been lying about how he assessed himself?  Or that Lek's assessment of him as sneaky and maladaptive was accurate?  No, surely not.  That seemed like it would go against the principles of counseling.

When she continued on to speak about 'homework' Rayek looked slightly annoyed.  Counseling 'homework' never went well with him.   And as she stated her request, Rayek frowned.

Learning about others was not where he had difficulty.  He likely already knew most people's past better than their own friends, but applying that knowledge to forming a friendship back was something that Rayek had trouble doing.  Her suggestion for him to be vulnerable didn't sit well with him.  People got hurt when he let others in.

Rayek considered outright telling her he had no wish to form another friendship, but then realized that would likely cause issues... that could get Miss Judy back involved his case.   He slowly nodded his head.  "I will work on that." he answered vaguely.

"Is that the end of this session?" he asked, ready to leave the moment that counselor gave the go ahead.

Katra Station -  Deck 18 - Counselor's Office - After S1M6

Beja slowly took a sip of her tea, and looked over at the Commander. He seemed so anxious to have the session over with, she could draw it out but that was not her way. She really believed that it was always best to go at the pace of the person. Pushing a person to talk and work on things they were not ready to, never ended well for anyone. In fact, trying to force someone to deal with issues they were not ready for, did more damage than good.

"I do hope you really will Commander," she replied to him. "I know that it isn't an easy homework assignment I've given to you. But as I trust in your experience and knowledge with command, I hope that you will do the same to me in return in my department."

She nodded over to him, with a smile, "Yes I believe that this is a good place to end the session. I hope that you found it helpful." They both knew that he had started the session believing it was a waste of time, and that nothing would be gained from it. She could only hope that during the session that might have changed for him. She had felt he had made some headway, and was optimistic that she could help him, if he allowed it.

The work of course would be up to him, all she was there for, to help him navigate through the journey, and help to mark the success as they were made.

Beja stood up, and reached out to shake his hand, "It was a pleasure to speak with you Commander. I look forward to talking with you more in the future."

Cmdr Rayek tr'Lhoell
[Katra station - Deck 18 - Counselor's office] (after S1M6)

Rayek felt a slight twinge of guilt at Beja's words... since up til then he really hadn't intended to follow through on his 'homework'.   Friendships rarely went well with him.  True, this was not the Empire where his closest would be tortured or their lives threatened because of him - or at least Rayek hoped not.  But recently even those few friendships he had formed, with Lek and Saqa7 were both barely viable now, so that Rayek wondered at the wisdom of asking him to form more.  Especially when he was an emotional wreck.  But he couldn't say any of that to the counselor, not if he wished to keep from being taken off-duty.

"Of course counselor.   Thank you.  The session went better than I expected." Rayek commented, which was true.  It certainly went better than almost any session he'd had with Miss Judy.

Rayek stood up, offered a slight bow and head nod towards the Klingon then headed out.

[Katra Station - Deck Two -  Briefing Room (aka XO's office)](couple of weeks after S1M8)

The scheduled counseling session to discuss Rayek's 'homework'... got preempted by his mission to retrieve Saqa7 and then further delayed by his capture by the Drecacon and incarceration by the Thinkers.   So much had happened in the intervening time that Rayek had quite literally forgotten all about his counseling sessions and his 'homework' until he checked this mornings agenda and saw that the counselor had booked him an appointment for that afternoon.

The usual dread he would feel at such an appointment didn't manifest this time.  Rayek was too happy at Tess having said 'Yes' to his proposal the night before.  Nothing could burst his mood... not even a counseling session.

So 5 minutes before the scheduled meeting a chime on his PADD alerted him to the upcoming meeting.  Rayek saved and closed down his work file glad that the day, recycled his empty tea cup and basically cleaned up the Briefing Room so that it was near impossible to tell that the room was where the Romulan did his 'paperwork' from.  He quickly checked his messages, smiling at one he received from Tess and took a moment to reply back... his own smile becoming a bit mischievous. Then realizing the time, Rayek hurried him way down to the Counselor's office.

[Katra Station - Deck 18 - Counselor's office]

Arriving at the counselor's office at exactly the scheduled time, Rayek chimed the door and waited to be granted access.  Once granted he entered, offered a bright smile towards the Klingon counselor.  "Good afternoon, Counselor. Thank you for booking this appointment on my behalf... I wasn't trying to avoid this session... it just slipped my mind."  That had been a more and more common occurrence of late.

Katra Station -  Deck 18 - Counselor's Office - After S1M6

Beja glanced up from her cup of tea as the Commander entered the counseling office. Honestly, she had thought the session was going to be canceled. She still hadn't been able to tell if he had found her session helpful at all. The Commander was hard to read, and he had already admitted that he hadn't cared for counseling at all, and hadn't put much stock into her being any better at it than the others. It wasn't the first time that people had underestimated her. It wouldn't be the last either, she figured.

She smiled over at him, as he had surprised her with actually showing up to the session. Well, that had to be a good sign, at least she would take it as such. "Commander, it is good to see you. Please have a seat," Beja's arm swept over the tea set, "Care for a cup of tea?" she offered him.

Beja allowed him to get settled in, while she took another sip of her tea. Then she picked up her PADD and rested it on her lap, "Tell me, how are you doing?" It had been quite an eventful time at the station and for the crew. The challenges with the Dord, and their servant class, the attack by the Dreacaon, and Thinkers, none if had allowed for a lot of the crew to digest and fully deal with the traumas. She had been especially concerned for the senior staff and how they were holding up.

At the offer of tea, Rayek nodded, answering as sat down in the chair indicated.  "Yes, thank you.  Cream, three sugar."

The counselor was kind enough to hold off on making her queries until after he was settled and had taken a sip of his own tea.   The sweetness on his tongue reminded him of Tess.  At the counselor's question, he smiled expansively.  "I am doing well!  In fact, I have never felt so good, Lieutenant."

Without a doubt the counselor would view his response skeptically, especially given his many concerns mentioned last time they spoke officially.  But so much had changed since then - for the better!  Yes, there had been difficulties with the Drecacon and the Thinkers - it worried him that he had been unable to protect Tess... and the others.   But they were all safe now... she was safe.

While he was certain that the counselor knew about his relationship with her direct superior - he wasn't certain if word of their engagement had spread.  He had only mentioned it to the Captain and to Hrafn that morning - it was likely that Tess had mentioned it to some of her staff, possibly Beja specifically.

"I was told something amazing last night and it's like everything is lighter now." he commented in slight hint, watching the Klingon's reaction to see if she already knew or if he would be the one to inform the counselor.

The commander certainly was much different person this time around. Perhaps she was a much better counselor than she thought. Not likely, though it could of course just be an act of his, being done to convince her he was fine. Not the first time that a person would try and fake it to make it appear that the person was doing better than they actually were. Why do that? It was strange to Beja. Counseling was there to help the person, lying would only end up hurting the person in the end by keeping them from getting the help and support they needed.

Beja poured some cream and counted out the three sugar into the tea cup before she handed it over to Rayek. "Here you go commander."

"So do tell me your amazing news. Are you getting your own command?" she asked him, she hadn't known him long, so she wasn't sure what would make him so happy. She assumed a person who was second in command dreamed of having their own command. That was the next step in the order of things.

Rayek chuckled at the counselor's guess, and shook his head amused.  "No, this is far better than that." he exclaimed with a wide smile, before pausing in hesitation.  If Tess hadn't told Beja yet... was that for a reason?  Was he about to steal Tess' thunder by announcing it to her staff member?  Hmm.. perhaps he should have clarified with Tess earlier who she planned to tell herself.  Oh well, he couldn't rightly not answer now after being so open and boastful just seconds ago.  Hopefully Tess would forgive him.

"Last night I asked Tess to marry me... and she said 'yes'" the Romulan beamed.  His cheek muscles were actually beginning to ache from the uncharacteristic amount of smiling he'd been doing the past day.

Beja couldn't imagine what would have been better than getting his own command, but then he told her about his upcoming wedding, and to Doctor Moreno. She hadn't even realized the two had been dating. She wasn't doing a very good job at being Katra's counselor, if she didn't even really know the people she was trying to serve. Sure, she had just arrived not too long ago, but she really needed to make a better effort to get to know the crew.

"Well, congratulations, commander. I'm happy to hear of the good news," Beja lifted up her tea cup to clink it against his in a human like manner to cheer good tidings. Neither of them were humans, but it was good to embrace other cultural norms.

She smiled over to Rayek, "I'm happy for you two." It was always good to see people fall in love, and find their partner in life. Beja wasn't sure how it would work with them both being in command, but she was positive the Captain most likely already had that worked out.  Surely, neither of them would have to step down from their post, no one should be penalized for falling in love.

"Though that does not count as completing your homework," Beja stated to him, with a smile still on her face as she took another sip of her tea. She was curious to know if he had actually made a new friend. He made a new finance, so surely he was able to make a friend.

Rayek continued to beam happily and when Beja raised her tea cup in salute his engagement, Rayek likewise raised his and clinked it against her cup lightly.

"Thank you.  I can scarcely believe how fortunate I am." he said happily.

Even her statement regarding his homework couldn't dampen his mood.

"I made several attempts by resuming my 'Meet and Greet' sessions with new staff.  My intention being to find someone I share similar interests with but each session seemed very strained.  There was a very clear separation between them and I.  Some I even feel were intimidated by me and as such our conversations were very stilted and brief.  Perhaps over time they might get use to me but ... no doctor... I didn't manage to garner a friend as you tasked me to, even with the extension of time given since our last session."

His smile didn't dim in the slightest.

"Perhaps I'm not presenting myself the right way?  How would you go about gaining a friend?"  Rayek turned the task back to her.

"Well I'm glad you asked, I've got some thoughts on it, that I hope that you will be open to commander," Beja answered him. She had known that her homework assignment wouldn't be easy for him, but she really had wanted him to try his best. It had been good to hear that he had. Sure, he might not have been successful, but that wasn't the point of the exercise.

It was hard to open up to others, but the more people tried it, the easier it would be. And the commander was in a challenging place for it as well. Being friends with subordinates could be difficult and tricky. There had to be a professional relationship maintained, but that didn't mean that he couldn't and shouldn't try to be friends with the crew. A hard balancing act, one of the many challenges that came with command itself.

"Have you had a chance to talk and spend any time with Toji?" Beja asked Rayek with a smile on her face.

When the counselor said she had some thoughts on ways he could present himself better, Rayek expected her to provide some actual advice instead she asked a question.  Had he had a chance to talk to Toji?  Toji he recognized as the name picked by the Dord refugee aboard the station.

Rayek's smile which up to this point had been unwavering, slipped.  He shook his head. "No.  I have not." Rayek did not offer more than that.  If she wanted to know why, she'd have to ask directly. He wasn't going to offer up an explanation if he didn't have to.
