Zex shrugged.  "OK" she said following Jada's eyes to Tess.  Hopefully no one assumed that Zex was suggesting the they just leave Tess here.

'Gods, no' she thought to herself.  She had noticed that the medical officer had fallen asleep which is why she suggested the end the meeting.  Her idea to go to Blue Belles was intended with the assumption that they carefully move Tess to the comfort of her own bed first.  But perhaps she didn't make that clear.

"Good question" she said after Rayek spoke.  She nodded.  Then went back to eating the cookies.

"I do have a question about the book.  You indicated certain sections were 'raunchy'.  It is merely an explicit descriptive of a consensual act or are the scenes something Tess might find disturbing due to darker themes?"  This was something he needed to know since he was looking to read the story aloud to her and the babe in her womb.

'Oh. Hmm.' Jada had begun, then sipped her cooling Orion tea as she thought about it, realising what Rayek was referring to. 'You mean rape scenes? No, there's none of that. It's a risk as villainous characters threaten to claim Agnes, but she's canny enough to avoid them. There's also a mention of an old custom,' Here, Jada riffled through the book to check, and struggled with the French, 'Called droit du seigneur, the right of the lord to a woman on her wedding night, but it's suggested to be a myth or something no longer, rarely, or never practised... The actual sex scenes are consensual, used for romantic character development and to add a little action as much as the fight scenes.'

[Katra Station - Lounge]

Tess wasn't sure what had woken her. If it was the brief period of silence during the conversation, her subconscious noticing that the other's focus was on her for a moment or if her body just have had enough rest for now.

Whatever it was - Tess started to stir from her light slumber, blinking her eyes open. She noticed that she was leaning against Rayek's side - and then she realized that they were in the lounge and that she must have dozed off during the blook club session.

Sitting up straight she looked around at Jada, Zex and Rayek in slight embarrassment. "I'm sorry I nodded off", she said sheepishly as she ran a hand through her hair to make it look less like she just woke up.

As the conversation then went on, Tess was slightly confused. What kind of book were they discussing? "It seems I missed the most part."

Zex looked over to Tess.  She hoped that she had not done anything to wake her.  It would have a been another embarrassing faux paux for her.  The first being her comment about going to Blue Belles.

"I'm not sure what you last remember, but Agnes' story had a rather happy ending.  Jada is a gifted story teller, of course, but I might buy the book and read it myself" she recapped.  "And a portion of the purchases go to a charity" she added.

As Tess woke up right when she was talking about the sex scenes, Jada chuckled lightly 'I guess you woke up at a bit of an awkward moment.'

After Zex's summing up, Jada offered 'I could get you a recording from internal sensors, but I can't promise I won't put you to sleep again.' She grinned, and added 'And I'm not going into podcasts.'

[Katra Station - Lounge]

As Jada began to answer his question, Rayek became aware of Tess shifting in the crook of his arm.  He turned his head to look at her leaning against him and was able to watch her beautiful blue eyes blink open.  He smiled softly at her confusion.

"That's okay, e'lev.  No need to apologize.  I'm sure Jada understands." He stated even as Jada herself offered to provide Tess a recording of her synopsis.

"That won't be necessary." he remarked to Jada, then looked to Tess in explanation,  "Since I fully intent to add the book to my reading list. You can experience the book without knowing the ending - as it is fully intended. We can even start on it later tonight if you aren't feeling too tired."

Zex agreed with Jada's assessment.  If all Tess heard when she woke up was 'raunchy' coming from her husband, she would have been a bit alarmed too.   So, yes, and awkward moment was an apt term for the situation.

She smiled when Reyek mentioned the possibility of starting the book with Tess later tonight.  Had Zex been younger she might have made googly eyes and teased 'oooooo."  But she didn't know the couple that well yet, so she held her tongue.  But smiled and chuckled in her head.

At Jada's slightly teasing comment that she didn't know if an audio recording of the summary would put her to sleep again Tess gave an apologetic grin back to the Orion. "It wasn't you, really", she chuckled.

Apparently the book seemed to have piqued everyone's interest - Rayek wanting to read it to her and Zex too hinted on her intention to get a copy of the book.

Looking to Rayek she smiled, resisting the temptation to snuggle back up to him again. That spot had been rather comfy. But she liked the idea of them reading the book together, or rather him reading the book to her and the baby. "I'd love that", she smiled.

'Ah, well, I hope you enjoy it then.' Jada said to them with a smile, feeling rather glad she'd managed to interest them in the book after all. The first (and possibly last) book club meeting had been a success. She thought of some other points to make. 'Oh, while there are some fight scenes, it doesn't get too violent or gory either, though that might depend on your standards. Since it's written from a first-person point-of-view, Agnes doesn't really need to describe things blow-by-blow and isn't present for some of the more gruesome bits, they're just related second-hand after.' she noted. 'Overall, I thought it was a good exploration of a primitive period of Earth history through an outsider's eyes.' she summed. 'It's written in Federation Standard and Kolari, the Orion language, but the computer can do you a translation if you like, as well as historical annotations for more research and context.'

Zex was not a linguist, so she would have to read it in Federation Standard.  Federation Standard was otherwise known as English.  The dominate language in the Federation.

"I did enjoy it" she said pushing to cookie tray away from her.  She had already had her fill and would have to spend tomorrow running laps around the treadmill to work off the excess calories.  "Thanks so much for sharing the book with us" she said sincerely.  She toughed her chest and dipped her head to emphasis the sincerity of her words.

Rayek appreciated Jada's further clarification, both about the battle scenes and the language options.  "Duly noted." he acknowledged wrapping up that portion of the meeting before moving on.

"Before we wrap up here...  I just wanted to mention to the others that Tess did bring a book to the meeting as well.  Maybe we can give her a moment to briefly review it for us?"

'Sure.' Jada agreed, sitting back to relax and listen now whilst she sipped her Orion tea. She wondered what kind of book Tess would talk about, and if it was something she'd be interested in. Given the vast size of the Federation, and the myriad of cultures within it, and the infinite variety in the tastes of its billions of people, it was almost impossible to disseminate fictions and genres very far. With too much to ever choose from, people inevitably stuck with what they already knew. Ironically, in this extreme information age, people got their recommendations the old-fashioned way by word of mouth, such as right now. And at this point, after successfully encouraging Zex and Rayek to pick up Agnes Barre, Jada would have to give whatever it was a go.

"Certainly" Zex replied.  "I have no plans after this.  So, I have all the time in the world" she said sincerely.

She took a sip of her water.  Then replaced it.  Then turned her attention to Tess.

When Rayek mentioned the book Tess had brought to the book club she smiled and turned away to pull her hand bag towards her. After opening it, she retrieved a leather bound book and put it to rest on her lap.

"It's a collection of Ba'ku fairy tales", she explained with a soft smile on her face. This book meant very much to her. Picking it up she turned it so the others could see the cover of the book. "Those are 'qordlur' - wolf-like creatures. They barely come close to the village so they're kinda 'mysterious'." Tess chuckled. "Not really, but very little is known of them. So they made it into several fairy tales of the Ba'ku. Usually they seem scary at first but then they turn out to give wise advice to the person in the story."

Turning the book back to her, Tess leafed through it. It was written in Ba'ku and there were nice illustrations in it. "Animals are very important in the tales, usually it's them who show the way for the protagonist. My favorite story is of a girl who was chosen to save her home from a mysterious force that threatened to destroy her world. She had very little faith in herself to accomplish what was asked of her but as she set forth, while struggling at the beginning, she coped with her task and when she returned from her journey, she had learned to believe in herself and what it was she could really do."

At Tess talked, Jada leaned forward so she could get a closer look at the qordlur. 'Yeah, I think I saw one of those.''Though I think it was a little rhyl that showed me the way.' she added with a gentle smile as she remembered the cute furry little creature.

Tess's outline was an age-old model for countless tales, so it was easy for Jada to tell see elements of it in her own trek through the Ba'ku wilderness, and she wanted to know more. 'Is it a long story? Maybe you could read a bit or tell it to us?' she tried to coax her.
