Zex continued listening.  The part about D'Nesh's pheromones interested her.  Until then she had forgotten that Orion women, like Deltan's could use their pheromones to manipulate people.

That curled her lips upward into a smile.  She was thinking of all the trouble she and Jada could get into if they ever decided to go clubbing together.   The good kind of trouble, of course.

So Zex made a mental note to talk to Jada after the meeting.  Hoping it might start a budding friendship.  Fingers crossed.

But for the moment, she returned her attention back to Jada's story.  It had finally progress to the point that interested the Deltan the most.  The romance.

But, of course, that is where the Orion woman chose to sip on her tea.  Some how, though, she got the impression that Jada was purposely pausing at that exact point.  Then some how, she know that that was exactly what Jada was doing.

She looked from Jada to Rayek.  When he said nothing, she looked back to Jada.  "and?" she prompted politely.

Engrossed in the story synopsis that Jada was providing, Rayek leaned forward.  It sounded like a very interesting tale.  Though her warning about 'raunchy' scenes did give him pause.  Perhaps it would be okay to skip those parts when reading aloud? Rayek glanced to Tess to see if any of this was of interest to her.

While he was distracted with his wife, Jada paused, earning a prompt from Zex.

He wondered if the authors idea of Orion romance would involve more of the 'raunchy' scenes.  He glanced back to see Jada sipping her tea unhurried.  Rayek smirked...Orions were very good manipulators.  Which was evidenced by the fact that he too wanted to know what happened next.  He didn't utter a word though... one prompt for continuation was enough.

[Lounge, Katra Station]

Jada put down her tea, grinning slightly for her teasing. 'And this is a time of arranged marriages, made for convenience, business, or alliance. Agnes knows this from the Orion Empire as much as from England. So, when Richard Barre, a travelling official of King Henry the Second, visits the knight Sir de Calne, Agnes sees in him an opportunity to escape a life of servitude, even to find some way of contacting space-travellers for rescue. She always dreams of home and the stars... Of course, it's easy for the beautiful and exotic green Orion woman with pheromones to seduce a studious, repressed primitive human man, persuade him to take her away and marry her. It's not love for her, not yet, but it's clear there's an attraction between the two, that Agnes wouldn't choose him if there wasn't. How they grow into love covers much of the rest of the book.' Jada explained carefully, not wanting to give away that plot too early and lose her audience.

'So, Agnes leaves with Richard and finally gets to explore the world beyond Wykes. He's a lawyer and representative of the monarch, so his work takes him and her across England and Europe. But very soon they face a serious test, when King Henry feuds with his former friend, Archbishop Thomas Becket. Their feud is over the extent of crown and church authority in various legal and land matters, and the author, Pilenna, frames it as a contest between theocratic and autocratic rule, between religious and secular power, the decline of the former and the rise of the latter. She mirrors and inverts this with the decay of autocratic power in the Orion Empires in another flashback. It gives an image of civilisations rising and falling; the modern Federation and modern Orion Colonies having a distant basis here. This long view of history is common in Orion fiction, because we've been in space for such a long time; it's the idea that the story can't be fully put in context without the centuries before and since.' she digressed, and sipped her tea.

'Barre then becomes a pawn in the feud. He advises the king on how to handle the dispute, and it becomes personal when Becket denounces and excommunicates him and other counsellors. To appeal and deliver messages to the Pope, the ultimate head of the church, Richard and Agnes travel to Normandy and then to Rome; Agnes makes more interesting observations on life in Earth's Middle Ages and the fallen Roman Empire that again mirrors the declining Orion Empire. There's a lot of back-and-forth travels and intrigues, battles with knights and bandits, and a notorious murder, but I won't spoil the plot.' Jada said with a hinting smile. A key plot point was suggesting just who had persuaded the four knights to be inspired by the king's complaint to go and murder Thomas Becket. 'While the culture here would have Agnes be just a woman and erased from history, she uses all her wits and wisdom to manoeuvre through these intrigues, advising Richard, serving as a go-between for him and the pope's officials, and working with him and independently to aid and protect her husband. At first, it's just to preserve his position and her own, but then it becomes more personal.'

Jada shuffled in her seat and at last got back to the romance bit. 'Through these adventures, Agnes and Richard come to deeply respect each other, for their intellects and insight, for their cleverness, cunning, and courage. They challenge and inspire each other, they go to any lengths to help each other. It's an Orion understanding of love, the love of each other's mind, and the love of mutual service. If you've ever read Bonner the Stochastic, with the "Let me help" theme, you might be familiar.' she suggested, referring to an Orion novelist once popular in the Federation, a century ago. 'It's a love that's forged over time and in fire and made stronger and more lasting for it.'

Zex clapped her hands.  That's what one does when another finished readying a story and it sounded like Jada had just finished.  So she clapped.

"Jada.  You are an excellent story teller.  You took something that at first seemed bland to me into something that I might actually pick up and read" she said.

She would likely, though, skip straight to the romance part of the story.  But that would be her secret for now.  Nonetheless, she offered Jada a warm smile.

OOC: I forgot a link to the real Richard Barre.

[Lounge, Katra Station]

Jada looked a little surprised and embarrassed, not expecting claps or compliments. Excellent storyteller? People usually praised her as a fighter. And bland? The novel had seemed quite interesting to her. 'Oh, I'm just summing up what Pilenna wrote.' Jada said, self-effacing. Aliens of Egypt.' Jada pursed her lips, remembering the source of that. She'd told quite a story then too, hadn't she? But had that book existed before she went back in time to inspire it? 'And she makes her home on Earth, but never loses her longing for the stars and Orion space.'

she concluded, feeling mostly relieved she could stop talking now. Had she really said all that about a book?

Thankfully Jada didn't make him or Zex wait long before continuing the synopsis.  During his time researching customs for his own wedding, he'd learned about Earths various marital eras.  Prior to that he'd just assumed arranged marriages were mainly a Romulan custom for the noble families.  Thankfully his own parents, who had married for love, never bought into the tradition when his father lifted the family name from disrepute.

Rayek was glad to hear that the story developed into a bit of a romance.  Tess knew by now that it was his favorite genre of movie.  He could only imagine it would be a preferred reading genre as well.  Hearing about the main characters desire for children, Rayek could relate and he gave Tess' hand slight squeeze.

That D'Nesh (or Agnes) had been unable to conceive or carry to term a child with Richard was disappointing but Rayek was glad to hear that the story offered a solution of adoption.  He and Tess were fortunate their species were compatible enough to make conception and carrying to term viable - though there were potential complications - Tess as a doctor was aware of them and was taking all the possible precautions.  The Romulan pondered if he and Tess would have considered adoption if their genetics had been too different.  Thinking of his affection even now for Lizzie's adopted Cardassian/Bajoran hybrid daughter Alys, Rayek was certain they would have.

When it seemed that Jada had wrapped and Zex clapped, Rayek added his own applause as well.  He committed the title to his memory to download a copy for reading... maybe later tonight, if Tess was open to the idea.

But Jada hadn't quite finished and he listened as she summarized and then reviewed it.  Afterwards Rayek offered a nod in appreciation to the Orion.  "Thank you for that amazing synopsis and review, Jada.  I'm looking forward to reading it."

Zex felt a bit embarrassed that she had clapped - before the actual conclusion of the story.  It was not a huge social faux paux, but a faux paux nonetheless.  Thankfully Reyek had clapped too which helped to dull the burning in her cheeks.

Finally thought it seemed that Jada had actually reached the real end of the story.  Zex did not clap this time and she waited to Rayek to respond first.  Then she rejoined the conversation.

"I agree.  You did such a nice job of it" she said.   "Can I download it from the database library or do I need to get it directly from you?" she asked.

'Oh, thanks.' Jada accepted, surprised that they were both so interested after all. She must've really sold it. Maybe she should post about it on fan forums? 'You should find it on most of the online retailers, as a ebook or repli-book. Or if you prefer a genuine dead-tree copy, the book shop in the Saucer 1 shopping section can order it, if it doesn't already have it.' she suggested. 'And a portion of profits go to the Golden Hearts slave girl charity.'

"Wait!  There is a charity connected to the sell of the book?  The hard copy only or virtual copies as well?" she leaned in.

This bit of news had obviously peeked her interest.  "And what is the Golden Hearts slave girl charity exactly.  What is it's mission?  Who do they serve?" she asked with a bit of intensity she had not demonstrated before.

She leaned back and took a breath.  "Sorry, I get a bit excited about charities.  Good ones are a passion of mine" she explained.

'Well, Pilenna donates some of her profits to Golden Hearts.' Jada clarified, a bit surprised by Zex's intensity and questions. Whom did a charity serve anyway? The people they aided, or those who created them? For an Orion, there was a subtle distinction. 'They rescue and help Orion women kept as sex slaves against their will. They have benefactors like Pilenna and Princess Volinna Voltab of Ayirn. I did some stuff with her on Earth a few years ago. ' Of course, when they went up against the likes of the Syndicate and other gangsters, Golden Hearts agents weren't above roughing up traffickers and owners and taking donations by force. Jada wondered if maybe charity work would be worthwhile, after she left Starfleet?

From what Jada said, it seemed that both hard and virtual copied bought would result in a donation to the charity. "Oh, that's quite good" Zex replied.  "I will download a copy as soon as I get back to my room" she promised.

She went back to nibbling on the remaining cookies.  Wondering what they might do next.  She smiled and looked from Jada to Rayek.

When the talk turned to the various ways to purchase the book and what charity benefited from such a purchase, Rayek's interest drifted.  Tess had at some point during Jada's synopsis leaned her head against Rayek's shoulder, and only now as he turned to inquire as to her take on the book, did Rayek realize that his wife had nodded off.   He smiled softly at her and ever so slowly readjusted his position so that he could slide the arm she was leaning on out from under her and wrap it around her protectively.

Tess' long days as Executive Officer and the normal tiredness that came along with being pregnant had meant this wasn't the first time she had dozed off against him.   Twice before she had dozed off during movie night.  This however was the first time in public.

He was certain she might feel some embarrassment but he knew from past times that if he woke her now rather than allow him to take her home for a properly sleep she would insist that she was 'Fine after that power nap' and good to continue their activity.  This time Rayek was just going to let her sleep and get the rest she so obviously needed.

He looked back to Jada and Zex smiling softly.  "Zex, is there a book that you might review?... I think if we got quiet that might wake her and I'd rather she rested more."

Zex felt a bit embarrassed.  She hadn't prepared anything.  And see felt like all eyes were on her.

"Besides the Princess who escaped to Risa story, I haven't read anything of note in quite a long time" she said honestly.  "I just gave a summary before.  But I could give it a more through review if you like" she said.

"Unless you have something prepared you would like to share" she offered.  She was silent for a moment.  "Or, if you guys are interested, maybe we could go to Blue Belles and have a drink" she suggested boldly.

Seeing Tess had fallen asleep, Jada didn't take it as any kind of indictment on her oratory, instead recognising it might be a product of her pregnancy. Anyone talking steadily for a long period could have that effect; she'd learned that in lectures. She smiled, and turned her attention to Rayek and Zex; she might've only had two in her audience, but it had been enough.

'I've finished all I had prepared.' Jada admitted. She frowned at Zex's suggestion; Tess plainly wasn't going to Blue Belles. 'Sorry, I can't stay out, I have to feed my snake and prep some stuff for tomorrow's shift. And I spend enough time at Blue Belles.' What was this, was she getting responsible with age? 'We can talk a bit longer now though. For Tess to sleep along too.'

Rayek shook his head when Zex once more asked if he'd brought anything.  "No, Tess was the one with book to review.  I will be better prepared next time, though."

He frowned when the Deltan suggested going to the strip bar.  Rayek had never frequented the establishment outside of his work duties in the year and half he'd been on the station, and he certainly wasn't about to start with or without the presence of his pregnant wife.

However, Rayek didn't wish to offend the new diplomatic officer he was pondering how best to turn down the offer when Jada made it so much easier with her offer to just remain here and converse.  Rayek gave her an appreciative nod.  "I also have an early shift in the morning.  But yes, if we could converse a little longer that would be wonderful."

He thought back to some of the discussion they'd had already.

"I do have a question about the book.  You indicated certain sections were 'raunchy'.  It is merely an explicit descriptive of a consensual act or are the scenes something Tess might find disturbing due to darker themes?"  This was something he needed to know since he was looking to read the story aloud to her and the babe in her womb.
