Book Club (open to all)
« on: April 16, 2020, 11:25:35 pm »
[Lounge, Katra Station]

Feeling confident after her art class, Jada had had another idea for a hobby group to host on Katra. She wanted, needed, to put herself out there, try to make friends, explore other interests, and get away from the darkness of last year, and the Outer Dark out there. So, for lack of a better idea, she started a book club in one of Katra's quieter lounges with a ready supply of coffee and treats. However, rather than make everyone read the same book that might be well outside all their tastes and languages, she invited people to just talk about a book of their own that they'd read recently, which would share their respective cultures and might encourage others to read it next. It was bimonthly, to give everyone time to finish reading something, so this was the first session.

Jada would be talking about The Chronicle of Agnes Barre, which expanded on the English legend of the green children of Woolpit to tell the story of an Orion woman marooned on 12th-century Earth.

[Lounge, Katra Station]

Though Miss Judy had retired from counseling him, Rayek found that he still had her words in the back of his mind prompting him 'be more social'.   However, he had so few interests that were of a social nature that finding opportunities that were of interest to him were few and far between.  So when Jada put out the announcement of a Book Club, Rayek was intrigued.

While most of what he read currently was factual reports or datafiles, Rayek recalled from his youth his enjoyment of the magazine short stories and the blackmarket fiction novels - items that his friend Latihk's father was able to smuggle onto Romulus.  Rayek had first read them as a teen to improve his understanding of Federation Standard.  Now he had an opportunity to read just for the enjoyment of reading.  And if his reviewing of the book out loud was considered socializing then perhaps Lt.  Beja would be less concerned about him.

It wasn't surprising that Tess encouraged this interest and even spurred him to attend the first session even though he hadn't yet selected a book to read.   He was considering Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie solely for the reason that he and Lek's holo-novel program had stalled with their busy lives and Rayek wanted to find out who was the murderer.  But he was hesitant to give up on the holo-novel entirely... as slow and frustrating as the scenes had been, he'd enjoyed spending the time with his Ferengi friend.

The lounge was quiet when he and Tess first arrived.  Currently, it seemed like it was just them and Jada.

"Jolan tru, Jada." Rayek greeted the Orion with a slight courteous nod.  Spying the offered snacks, the Romulan smiled to his wife, "Can I get you some refreshment, e'lev?"

After retrieving Tess' order and his own selection of a camomile tea, Rayek sat down at one end of a lounge sofa and looked over to Jada. "Thank you for the invitation.  I'm looking forward learning about how a Book Club is conducted.  The concept of it is very appealing, as I do enjoy reading."

Jada looked up from her notes on Agnes Barre, having been rereading her earlier notes and scribbling a few new ones. Beside her copy of the book, she had an Orion tea. 'Uh, hi. Welcome.' she greeted Rayek and Tess, feeling a little nervous about this first session. She could battle a Jem'Hadar warrior to the death without flinching, but hosting a book club terrified her. 'I've got to say, I don't know how, I'm making this up as I go.' she admitted.

It was odd to see Jada looking discomfited.  She had always seemed very self-possessed and sure of herself.  To help put her at ease, Rayek relaxed back into the couch cushions and sipped at his tea.

When he lowered the mug again, Rayek commented on Jada's uncertainty with a sense of assurance. "I'm sure it will go well."

Though the literacy level seemed to be aimed at higher, Rayek made sure to indicate his expectations.  "I hope to get some good suggestions of books to read aloud to the baby." saying this he glanced over to Tess with a warm smile.

Rayek had read that reading to the baby even while in the womb was developmentally good for the fetus. It would recognize tone and voice.  So the Romulan intended to read to the baby nightly - if Tess was accepting of that.  A light romance novel or poetry perhaps.  Nothing dark or sinister.  Even now he wanted to protect his babe from the harsh realities of life.

After the end of her first shift, Zex went to her room, showered and changed into a newly pressed uniform.  She wasn't on duty any longer, but didn't know the social rules regarding on station regarding such things.  So, she went with the safe route for now.

While in her office, she had been able to access a list of some of the clubs that were active on the ship.  So was no good at art.  So she make her way to the Lounge to get involved with the book club.

Still unfamiliar with the station, it took her awhile to find her way to the Lounge.  The starbase was so big.  But she finally made it.

The door parted for her as she entered.  She saw two people talking and approached.  She waited for a pause in the conversation, than said "Excuse me, is this the book club?"

"I hope to get some good suggestions of books to read aloud to the baby."

At that, Jada raised a curious eyebrow and said with a smirk 'Well, I didn't expect to be covering them tonight, but I could discuss Meenie the Slave-Girl or The Very Hungry Wing-Slug, or even My First Book of Plunder?' The Orion children's books she'd listed may or may not be real, of course. Either way, the joke had helped her relax a bit. Now, if only more people showed up...

One did. Jada looked around at the new arrival, seeing an unfamiliar face, a bald woman; she wouldn't assume she was Deltan, not when she'd shaved her own head a few times herself. She couldn't sense the famous Deltan allure, but then, she was near psi-blind, was heterosexual these days, and was pretty well inured to the pheromones of her own species. 'It may be, when a few more people show up... Welcome.' She gestured her in, then went to the replicator to create a plate of biscuits to share around.

"Good.  I'm in the right place then.  I'm Zex.  I'm fresh off the boat" she said.

She waited for the Orion to return before continuing. "Thank you so much for the cookies.  Which department are you in" she asked curiously.

Jada's book suggestions earned a slightly skeptical look from Rayek, though he did mentally note the titles to check into later.

He was about to clarify what type of genre he was looking for when another entered.  He immediately recognized the Deltan diplomatic officer, having read through her file prior to her posting on Katra, though with his recent demotion, she'd reported in to the Captain.   This was his first time actually meeting her.

He inclined his politely.  Since she introduced herself by just her name (they were on their personal time currently) that is how he replied back leaving out their ranks but offering their positions since she had asked about department. "Hello Zex.  I am Rayek -  Rayek tr'Lhoell.  Security." He introduced himself then indicated Tess beside him "And my wife, Tess t'Lhoell. Chief of Medical."

He glanced to Tess after speaking, wondering if she would have preferred to introduce herself.

'Boat? Oh, ship.' Jada realised after listening to her Universal Translator. Not the one that sailed on water then. 'Well, welcome to Katra.'

Returning, she laid out two plates of biscuits of various common Federation varieties, then sat back down. 'I'm Jada, of Security/Tactical. Master at Arms and Assistant Chief.' she introduced after Rayek, and waited for a reaction she'd found was, if not exactly inevitable then common enough to brace for. An Orion female in Security? Now to be followed by A Security crewman hosting a book club? Jada: she practised martial arts, listened to Orion pirate metal, got tattoos, hunted, and took apart Jem'Hadar with a chain-sword. Jada: she held book clubs and art classes, drew pictures, and watched wildlife documentaries with her elderly snake. She was a woman of contrasts.

Lt. Cmdr. Tess t'Lhoell
[Katra Station - Lounge]

Tess was glad that Rayek seemed to show some interest in a socializing activity. While - if it had been her choice alone - rather chosen the art class, she was just as happy to go to the book club with Rayek. The book she had chosen was a rare one - a book of Ba'ku fairy-tales. Actually it was only for her adoptive father that such a book existed. He had made a copy of one she had as a child.

Test greeted Jada with a warm smile. She felt since their dinner she had come just a little bit closer to the woman, and Tess enjoyed it. She totally was up for spending some more time with her - maybe for something more active and fun. She might ask her sometime for that.

She asked Rayek to get her some green tea with lemon and then sat down on the sofa where Rayek joined her a moment later. She thanked him for the tea and started sipping at it while Jada and Rayek - and soon Zex - talked about books. She smiled over at her husband, finding the idea rather endearing that he wanted to read to their baby even while it was still in the womb.

Leaning forward Tess took one or two of the offered food niblets and chuckled when Jada named a few suggestions for Rayek to read to the baby. "I'm not entirely sure those books even exist, but I will look them up", Tess grinned.

Then she looked up to Zex. "What kind of books do you enjoy to read?", she asked, curious.

Species: Ba'ku
"You explore the universe. We've found that a single moment in time can be a universe in itself."

"I't is nice to meet all three of you" she said.  "Jada, Rayek. and Tess" she repeated the names back.  It would help her remember them later.

She touched her left hand to her lips and blushed a bit.  "I'm a bit embarrassed to say.  But romance novels are the thing I read the most" she admitted.

"Sure maybe I'm falling into a sterotype.  Single woman who prefers romance novels.  But that's what I like" she added.  "What about the three of you.  What do you typically read?" she asked curiously.

Jada nodded at Zex's answer, but didn't think she'd heard of that stereotype. Most Orion fiction could be counted as being in the romance, or least bodice-ripper, genre, so to her it kind of went without saying. she decided with a grin and a nod to Zex. 'I also got into Earthian comic books, after I found a lot of the characters were green. That was eye-opening.'

"Perhaps" she said regarding the possibility that it might be a stereotype.  Her shoulders lightly rose.  Then she returned Jade's smile.

"It's possible, though, that you like it for the same reasons you chose a career in sec/tac.  Except for the romance part that is.  That could be totally unrelated" she added.

She tilted her head slightly.  "Before the Earthian's were warp capable, I know that they tended to use the color green as the skin color of aliens they had not yet met.   I didn't know that there were many green skinned superheros though.  But I guess that make sense if they were using the color green to explain things different from themselves" she said.

Rayek smiled at Tess when she joined the conversation, asking Zex about her preferences.   When Zex replied romance, Rayek nodded.   He had yet read many non-fiction stories, but if movies were anything to go off of Rayek thought he too would tend to enjoy the romance novels and was about to remark such when comments about stereotypes were made.  Romance novels were for mainly single females?  This gave him pause.

When Zex asked the group as a whole what books they typically read, Rayek frowned in thought, listening as Jada answered first.  She also read romance.  The Romulan decided that selective honesty was best. "While I read almost constantly, I haven't read a work of fiction since my teen years.  I am hoping to change that with this club. Suggestions are appreciated."

Zex looked from person to person.  She didn't want to say first for fear of embarrassment.  But no one ever died of embarrassment, right.

"'A Hot Summer's Night on Risa' is pretty good.   If follows that lusty relationship of a Human woman and a Risan male.  She was a princess on her planet and was supposed to marry a specific man, but had not love for him.  So she left her home world before the wedding and went to Risa and fell in love with someone she met there" she said.
