A Romulan Night (Rayek/Tess) (COMPLETE)
« on: June 01, 2020, 04:39:04 pm »
Lt. Cmdr. Tess t'Lhoell (6 months pregnant)
[Katra Station - Deck 20 - s'Movel quarters] (beginning of June)

"It was really delicious, Phara." Tess smiled at the Romulan woman. She was gla that they had been able to arrange for a meeting so quickly after Phara and she had first spoken about it at the Orion celebration a few weeks back. Tess really felt like connecting with Romulans more and maybe it was just as nice for Rayek to get a deeper connection to the local Romulans on the station. As yet, that connection had been almost non-existent.

Phara had created a menu for them that evening. Osol twist - a Romulan confection - was the delicious last course of it. The entry had been viinerine, by the recipe Phara had been taught by her mother. The main course had been travit, a meat dish with vegetables at the side. Tess had loved every bite of it. And the desser had been right up her alley. Along with it Lared had served a Romulan wine made of lehe'jhme, which Tess of course couldn't try right now. Tess wondered if Rayek liked Romulan wine since Terran wine wasn't his thing.

The evening had been very enjoyable, Tess love the s'Movel children. Tordel was a very bright young lady and her younger siblings Cemee and Jinsux were just adorable. Even Karinne had joined them for the evening.

When Tess saw that Phara started to stack the plates, Tess stood up. "Let me help you", she said and picked up a small stack of them to help carry them to the kitchen area.

Ensign Rayek tr'Lhoell and
NPC's Phara t'Movel and Karinne t'Movel
[Katra Station - Deck 20 - s'Movel quarters](beginning of June)

As much as Rayek had enjoyed the company of the s'Movel couple out in the arboretum following the Orion Wing-slug celebration, he had been initially hesitant and wary at being invited over for a traditional Romulan dinner.   His however tempered his reaction at seeing Tess' obvious delight at the invitation and as with all things of late.... he deferred to her decision.  Though he did caution her that the elder Karinne would also be present - not having a clue that the interactions between the two had improved to much more than just feigned politeness.

However, it seemed Karinne was capable of at least following proper Romulan etiquette when it came to guests.   It was considered the height of dishonor to insult, much less harm a guest while they were under your roof.  Karinne had managed to keep her acerbic comments limited to mainly just her son's salvage business and Phara's cooking, the comment of which Rayek found to be ridiculous since the homemade meal was much better than anything the replicators or he could prepare - when it came to Romulan dishes.   He would need to get her recipes.

When Phara rose to begin clearing plates, Rayek initially started to rise as well being the one at home to do most of the domestic chores, but Tess vocalized an offer to help so he remained seated allowing the two women to move off with the stack of dishes.  That left Rayek alone at the table with Lared and Karinne.  The former who was sipping the last of his Romulan wine and the latter who was observing Rayek closely but hadn't yet spoken on ill word of his the entire evening.  He bet it was nearly choking her to have to keep so silent.

The three children - Tordel, Cemee and Jinsux - had politely excused themselves after finishing their meals a short while before. Rayek found them extremely well-behaved and respectful, which he expected was likely due to the firm yet supportive parenting that he observed from both Lared and Phara.   Tess had seemed to connect with the children almost immediately.  She was so good with children.

Rayek sipped slowly at his own wine, which he had barely touched throughout the meal. Not because he didn't like its taste but because he didn't want to become drunk.  The beverage was potent - moreso than Romulan ale but went down so much smoother.  It was easy to over imbibe without realizing it.

"So as I was saying, with a bit of feedback from you and Phara I can easily edit the Romulus holodeck program to add in personality traits to a few of the character templates to better reflect individuals you feel your children should know."

At the same time he would remove all references to his own family.  While it was likely they had put one and one together with his clan name his choice of honeymoon location, he didn't need to give them proof of their suspicions... especially Karinne.

He glanced over towards the elderly Romulan woman and noticed her watching him intently.  "Yes? Is there something you wish to say, lhhei?"

Karinne narrowed her eyes at the former station Executive officer.  She'd been amused to hear of his incarceration when gossip of it had first ran through the station.  She'd known it was only time before the Feds took back the authority they'd given their Romulan stooge.  That his demotion came on the heels of Leyton's takedown was not lost on the shrewd woman.

Starfleet only had need of their pet Romulan Commander when there was a threat to the Alpha quadrants peace. Now that the threat was gone it didn't surprise her at all that the man had been cast aside.  Yet from his attitude - he didn't even see how he's been used!  Well, she wasn't going to the one to educate the traitor.  She might have a tentative truce with the man's wife but the respect she gave the doctor did by no means transfer to her husband.

He, of course, had noticed her staring.  The man was the most alert individual she'd seen in years.

Karinne didn't bother feigning a smile. As long as she didn't insult him the dictates of host/guest would be met.  "If Ki Baratan is the main city in this program.. Can I assume that that Hall of State will be fully detailed?  This 'holiday' my son has planned might as well be used to educate my grandchildren of their illustrious history."

She met gaze with the traitor.  She may be old but as a proper Romulan she recalled who the Praetor and Proconsul were for the entirety of her life.  So she recognized the name tr'Lhoell.

Lt. Cmdr. Tess t'Lhoell (6 months pregnant)
and
NPC Lared tr'Movel
[Katra Station - Deck 20 - s'Movel quarters] (beginning of June)

Tess entered the kitchen with Phara. The s'Movels had a proper kitchen in their home and not just a kitchen nook like she and Rayek had in their quarters. Tess thought with a large family like this and three generations under one roof it made sense.

"Would you mind giving me the recipes?", Tess asked Phara as she put down the stack of plates. "During the week Rayek usually cooks for me but I love to do some cooking at the weekends. I'd love to try to make some of your dishes together with him. Unless it's not some kind of secret family recipe", Tess chuckled as she turned to the Romulan woman. She really liked Phara, she had clicked with her immediately. Unfortunately they have had not really opportunity to chat ever since they met the first time in the arboretum after the orion celebration, but she was sure Lared had told her of his mother's behaviour when she had been in sickbay for treatment one month before they had set off to Ba'ku. And Tess knew now at the latest that Phara had to endure the Romulan woman's poison daily. Tess didn't have a mother-in-law, unfortunately, but having none was probably better than having one like Karinne. But whlie she had been quite civil towards her and Rayek, she had not held herself back towards Phara and Lared.

Tess looked at the plates and wondered if they were replicated so they would simply have to return them to the replicators to recycle them or if it was the family's own possession. "Do you need me to help you clean these up?", Tess asked.

Lared was pretty aware that he had been left in the lion's den. His mother had been half way decent to their guests. Perhaps it was because of the many times he had spoken to her beforehand that he didn't want to have the evening being ruined just because they had invited the station's XO with her Romulan former XO husband. She had stuck to that but obviously insisted to continue to spit her poison towards him and his wife. Well, that was better than at their guests.

But now with the distraction of the dinner over, Lared was alert to intervene if necessary. He had just put down his empty glass of wine when Rayek continued the topic they had been speaking of before. At Rayek's offer, Lared showed him an appreciating smile. "That would be fantastic. The capital city was a sight to see. The Apnex Sea ... the famous market ... the fire falls ... I've only been to Ki Baratan twice and that had been decades back. Memories fade so quickly ..."", he said with a little bit of a wistful smile.

His attention shifted to his mother as Rayek pointedly asked her if there was something she wished to say for she had been staring at him the whole evening already. Lared quietly cleared his throat as he looked at his mother who sat at the other head of the table opposite him. Be civil, his gaze seemed to say to her.

Of course the Hall of State had been a must to see for every Romulan. And he was not against showing it to his children. He just didn't think anymore of the Romulan history to be that 'illustrious'. And he was certain that his mother's 'education' of his children would turn into some propaganda talk.

Lared glanced back to Rayek. "I can imagine the Hall of State would be one of the locations that would be rather well detailed", he admitted. "I will speak to Phara about the amount and variation of holo characters we'd like to have in there. Romulus had some beautiful landscapes, I'm sure Tordel, Cemee and Jinsux would enjoy to see." As he said that he reached out of the decanter. "Rayek, can I offer a refill to you?", he smiled.

Phara looked over to Tess as she began stacking the dishes into the replicator/recycler.

"Oh of course, Tess. I'd be happy to share with you my recipes.  It's nice to know I'm not the only one who appreciates the difference a 'hands on, home-cooked' meal brings to the table." the Romulan woman answered as she pressed the recycle mode on the unit and the first load of dirty plates and left over food were broken down into their component base matter.

Tess' offer to help was met with a smile and she motioned to Tess approach the recycling unit.  "It should work for you.  We have the controls child-locked -  so that Jinsux doesn't try to recycle Cemee's toys if he's upset with her.  That boy is quite the handful."

NPC Lared tr'Movel
[Katra Station - Deck 20 - s'Movel quarters] (beginning of June)

Lared was pretty aware that he had been left in the lion's den. His mother had been half way decent to their guests. Memories fade so quickly ..."", he said with a little bit of a wistful smile.

Rayek nodded.  All of that he had within the program. Lared's comment about memories fading quickly struck Rayek as odd.  Memories for him were normally quite vivid and detailed.

As he said that he reached out of the decanter. "Rayek, can I offer a refill to you?", he smiled.

Something in the woman's tone seemed to be asking more than just what the words would suggest.    "Yes, the Hall of State is one of the locations Tess, had shown interest in seeing." Much to his dismay and concern - even knowing that holodeck safeties were on and that he had full control to delete the character of the Praetor - like he already had Vandar -  Rayek had been nervous during the entire scenario.

"You can even have the children converse with the Praetor.  Currently, I have the simulation set to display Chulan... though I have access to several scan templates for others prior... perhaps a meeting with Shinzon would be of interest? Or perhaps meeting Praetor Colius for whom the Via Colius pathway is named.". The Via Colius was one of several  famous pathways in Ki Baratan that traversed the city radially, each named for a former praetor.

At the offer of a refill, Rayek hesitated.  While he was no longer in Command and therefore no longer needing to be held responsible for the station, the notion that he could 'relax' more was very foreign to him.   The wine however was very good... he was actually tempted to ask if it were the real stuff, because the versions of replicated wine he'd had in the past never tasted this good.

"Yes, another glass of the wine would be nice."

While Rayek held out his glass for a refill, Karinne studied the man.  He hadn't given away much of anything on that answer.  Time to be more direct.

"It is more the role of Proconsul that I'm interested in teaching them about. "

Karinne was gratified to see Rayek turn his head sharply towards her, which caused him to move his hand which held his wine glass as it was being refilled.  As a result a splash of wine covered his hand and the table over which the glass was being refilled.

"As I recall, there was a Lhoell in that position... about 15 years ago now yet disappeared before the end.  A relative of yours?" she asked pointedly.

Lared listened with interest as Rayek told him what he could do with the program and he was impressed. It surely would make for some great lessons in Romulan history. Even he could probably still learn from it. "It sounds intriguing, I think the children will like it."

He was happy when Rayek accepted more of the Romulan wine. He wanted to do good to his guests and making sure they felt safe and comfortable in his home. He had opened the bottle after he returned to the table and was just refilling Rayek's glass when one of his mother's comments seemed to throw Rayek off. His hand jerked away with the motion of his head to look at Karinne and Lared - unprepared for this - kept pouring out the liquid which splashed on Rayek's hand and the table beneath. Letting out a surprised gasp Lared put the bottle aside while his mother continued to comment on a former Proconsul that held the same name as Rayek. From the way Karinne had asked that question it seemed obvious that she knew the answer full well and that it really had been a relative of Rayek who had been Proconsul. Lared was astounded. His family must have been so very influential. But maybe it was just a conincence of the name?

Shaking off the initial shock Lared refocused on the mess that needed to be dealt with. "Apologies, Rayek. Let me get something to clean that up with. Will you need to change your clothes?" He wasn't sure if Rayek's sleeve had been stained in the process as well. "I could replicate them for you."

A reply that she already knew how much of a handful Jinsux could be from the time when he visited his grandmother in sickbay was on the tip of her tongue, but she managed to swallow that thought before any words slipped out. To hide that near-slip and to distract herself from the bad feeling that her dissimulating caused she turned to the replicator and began recycling the plates and left-overs of food. She didn't like to keep a secret from Phara, especially since it was about her child. But she didn't like to break a promise either. Maybe there would eventually be a time when she could tell her about it.

"Oh, I definitely appreciate home-made food over replicated", she picked up on Phara's comment from before. "I grew up in a society without technology whatsoever and I recall my brother or my father cooking every single day at home."

It didn't take long until all the dirty dishes were returned to the recycle system and Tess turned around to smile at Phara. "Your children are adorable. I believe Tordel will be an enrichment for Starfleet." On the note of children, Tess suddenly realized something. "Oh! I haven't told Rayek about the Romulan Baby Welcome we wanted to do." Tess was excited about it. But before she could suggest for them to return, Lared appeared in the door frame to the kitchen, looking slightly annoyed.

"Is something wrong?", Tess asked.

Lared seemed to ponder over his answer for a moment while he wetted a cloth. "Just a little bit of spilled wine", he replied and only thought to himself that he might needed to have another word with his mother.

"Oh", Tess smiled. "Rayek really likes your wine. He's not that fond of Terran wine, so I can't wait to try Romulan", she said as they then returned to the living room area while Tess wondered if Rayek was squiffy already.

Rayek narrowed his eyes at the woman's direct question.  What did she know? and more importantly whom might she tell?

Lared's fussing about the spill and his clothes just barely registered for Rayek but feigning a smile he turned to look to the salvager and nodded.  "Thank you, yes a fresh shirt would be appreciated - medium size, please."

He waited until the man had moved out of the room before rounding on the elderly woman with a scowl.

"Ma'am, I don't know what your game is..." he hissed in a low voice, "but it stops here and now! My past is exactly that - in the past.  You may have some grand scheme and hope to return to the Empire.  I do not!  My home and my family are here now and I'd thank you kindly to stop insulting it and threatening it with your barbs and questions!" he whispered emphatically.

He stood up and took an intimidating step nearer.  "Do not underestimate what I will do to protect my family!  I fired on the last threat posed to my wife, do not think I will hesitate to do the same again if your nosing about my past puts her in danger!"

He glared at the woman menacingly.

Phara listened with interest as Tess spoke about growing up where there was no technology.  While it sounded primitive, it obviously worked well for Tess.   She found herself smiling in agreement when Tess commented on her daughter.  "Yes, even Karinne has become less vocal of her opposition to it.  Though it worries me that the Academy is so far away.  Is it wrong to wish that there was a satellite campus here on Katra?"

Abruptly the discussion topic switched when Tess noted that she hadn't yet told Rayek about the "I think tonight would be the perfect time to inform him that it is being looked after.  Though to be honest, I doubt the men care much, as long as the babe is hale and hearty."

When her husband appeared in the doorway a moment later to get a cloth to clean up a spill ... and to replicate a shirt from the household's one replicator... she took over the task of getting a wiping cloth ready for him.   "Oh dear... that's a shame, but not to worry, it is easily cleaned up."

Tess' remark that Rayek was partial to the Romulan wine was not surprising, she'd tried the Terran wine herself awhile back.  Much too dry for her own tastes.  "If he likes it that much we'll have to send you home with a bottle or two.  Consider it a late wedding gift from us, and you both can enjoy a glass after the baby is born."

With the shirt and wiping cloth collected the trio returned to the dining room.

Hearing Lared and the women returning, Rayek's dark expression smoothed and he moved to meet the them at the dining room door.  After accepting the proffered shirt from the man, Rayek turned to Tess, "I'll be back in a moment, e'lev"   Rayek headed for the washroom to change attire.

Karinne stared after the former Federation Commander pensively a moment before looking to Tess. "Tess... you are the Clan Head of s'Lhoell now.  Come with me there is something you and I should speak of privately."

She stood up and motioned Tess to come with her, heading down a hall opposite of where Rayek left.

Tess looked at Phara empathically. "I know it's far away. But going to the Academy is an incredible thing to experience. I bet Tordel will love it." She smiled, trying to emphasize the good thing to it. Fabiano had always been encouraging to her to make experiences of her own, or maybe it was because Tess had been away from home from an early age on. But then again, Phara had made very different experiences - horrific ones. So her fear was understandable.

Tess' eyes gleamed with excitement at the prospect of telling Rayek of the they were planning. While Phara's comment about fathers not being very interested in this Tess was positive that Rayek was an exception. He wanted to know everything that was going on with her or the baby. "I bet he'll be pleased to know", Tess smiled.

Then Lared joined them and Phara offered for them to take a bottle of Romulan wine with them. "Oh thank you, that is so kind of you", Tess smiled, genuinely happy about it.

Tess smiled at Rayek when he announced he'd be right back. "Okay, ciccino", she replied quietly to him as he passed her. Then something unexpected happened. Tess looked to Karinne who addressed her in saying that there was something she wanted to talk to her about. Tess looked surprised at her but her curiosity spiked immediately. Only in second thought she wondered if she had gotten word back from the Romulan contact she had asked Karinne to establish for her.

Lared looked at his mother in wary displeasure. He wasn't sure what she was going to tell Tess, but that she wanted to speak to her alone and seemingly had waited for a moment when Rayek was not present was reason enough for him to be suspicious. But obviously he couldn't really forbid his mother to talk to Tess privately if she agreed.

"Don't take too long", he said light-hearted but the look he directed at his mother would let her read between the lines. When they had left the room Lared looked to his wife. "What is she up to now", he muttered before he went clean up the spilled wine from the table and then finally to refill Rayek's glass properly.

Phara was happy that Tess was looking forward to the Romulan tradition, one of the others assisting with the planning had remarked that the Ba'ku woman, being a Federation member, might have a bias against it.   That didn't seem to be the case.

When they returned to the dining room and Karinne asked to speak to Tess privately, Phara looked to her husband in concern.  He seemed wary to her, but he didn't stop his mother.  Phara couldn't help but mirror his remark.   "Yes, don't be long.  Tess and I have some news to inform Rayek." she added.

[Karinne's room]

The elder Romulan led Tess down the hall past the bathroom and into a bedroom that contained very sparse furnishing.  It probably reminded Tess of what Rayek's quarters had looked like before she moved in.   The furnishings consisted of a single bed, a wardrobe a nightstand and a footlocker on one side of the room and a single desk and chair on the other side.  It looked an vacant cadets' room at the Academy.

Karinne, nodded toward the chair by the desk.  "Have a seat if you like."

She, however, went to the foot of the bed where sat the footlocker and unlocked it with her biometrics.  She opened it.  The truck seemed to hold all the personal items that would normally be set out to add that homey feel to a place.  Photos and holo-cubes.  Throwblankets of Romulan weave and little treasures and mementos of cherished moments.

Karinne uncovered a small wooden chest - a jewelry box - which she opened.   It held an assortment of rings, necklaces, and earrings and earring cuffs which she dug through until she came across a small metal pin.

"Now I want to be clear.  I am not giving this to you, but you may borrow it to scan so that you can replicate your own." the elder Romulan made sure stipulate the condition of her passing on the item.  "This is a Clan Pin..  See on the back, is the Clan name."

The pin that Karinne held out to Tess, when looking at the back, had the word s'Movel.  "These are worn by the Clan heads on celebratory days. As such it is only proper you have one for your Clan." she stated brusquely.

"Also..."  Karinne paused to glance towards the doorway and listened a moment - clearly checking to see if anyone was outside in the hall.  A concern that worried her enough to rise from her crouched position by the foot locker to go to the door and close it.

"I have a contact name and info for you as requested."

Tess followed Karinne into what seemed to be the old Romulan's room. It was as sparsely furnitured as Rayek's had been before she had moved in with him. It was odd to think that Rayek and Karinne were alike on many levels. She wondered if Rayek would be even more like Karinne if other circumstances had forced him to live in Federation territory - and for herself she answered that question with yes.

When offered a seat, Tess sat down on the chair before she watched the Romulan woman walking over to a footlocker, retrieved a small wooden chest and rummaged around in it.
Tess' curiosity grew. Karinne had mentioned her being the clan head now that had made her taking her with her in the first place. So what could it be?
Karinne then handed over a small item to Tess, but not without making it clear that it was just borrowed. Tess took the small pin from her that showed the bird of prey that was the symbol of the Romulan nation.

Tess looked at it in awe while Karinne explained its meaning to her. Prompted by her words, she turned the pin over and looked at the clan name 's'Movel'. It was clear that Karinne's motivation to give her this pin so she could replicate one for the s'Lhoell clan was not out of sentiment towards her, but purely out of the woman's desire to follow Romulan custom and honor it. But Tess was able to look over that and appreciate the gesture anyway. "Khlinae arhem, lhhei", Tess said quietly. "It means very much to me."

Karinne moving to the door to close it had Tess' attention divert from the pin back to the woman. When she said she got a contact name ind information for her, Tess of course instantly knew what she was talking about. Her eyes went wide with anticipation. "That's incredible!" She tried to keep her voice low but it was hard. Tess shifted a little so she sat on the edge of the seat. "Who is that contact?"

NPC's Phara t'Movel and Karinne t'Movel
[Katra Station - Deck 20 - s'Movel quarters - Karinne's room](beginning of June)

Karinne appreciated that the foreigner replied to her with the respect due her age and position as Clan head of the s'Movel family.  The elder Romulan doubted that there were many in her position that would be as open minded as she to inform the woman about the proper clan etiquette.  It seemed the woman’s husband hadn’t bothered. Her impression of him soured even further.

She watched the doctor’s expression at her statement of having found the requested  contact.  It had taken many months of sending letters and carefully couched messages back and forth with her military friends still in what was left of the Empire.   Tracking down someone with knowledge of the even who had run the facility had been difficult.  But Karinne now had a name to provide Tess -  her debt to the woman would be cleared.

”The woman’s name is t'Raghaellh.  She was a promising Arrain in the Empire's Star Navy before Hobus.  I hear the ship she was on was the one that was assigned to deal with the facility after the riot.   If she doesn't know who to talk to specifically, she may at least know who to put you in contact with."

Having returned to the dining room after washing up and changing shirts, Rayek immediately noticed Tess' absence.  He glanced to Phara and Lara, very much aware that Karinne was also absent.  He didn't like what that implied.

"Where is my wife?" he demanded to know, his tone clearly unhappy given his conversation earlier with the elder Romulan.  His paranoia had him wondering if the spilled drink had been planned - if hadn't seemed so at the time but perhaps Karinne knew her questioning would cause Lared to spill.

Phara was a bit surprised at the serious and dark tone from what she had though of as their friend - but he didn't seem friendly now.  She looked to her husband uncertain as to what to say.

Tess listened carefully. She was sure it wouldn't be appreciated if she would write down anything of this information, so she tried to memorize the woman's name. "t'Raghaellh", she repeated, just to commit it to her memory easier. "Thank you, so much", Tess said once more. "How can I contact her?", she wanted to know.

Lared raised his hands defensively as he offered a reconciling smile to Rayek. "Please don't worry about her. We would never let anything bad happen to her in this house." He paused briefly as he made an inviting gesture to Rayek to return to the dining table, but half-expected the Romulan would ignore it. "My mother indicated she had something to discuss with Tess, as she is the Clan Head of your family now." In an attempt to alleviate the concerns Rayek might have, Lared added, "My mother is meticulous about ensuring Romulan tradition is carried out correctly."

Ensign Rayek tr'Lhoell and
NPC's Phara t'Movel and Karinne t'Movel
[Katra Station - Deck 20 - s'Movel quarters - Karinne's room](beginning of June)

At the doctor's question of how to contact t'Raghaellh, Karinne moved to her desk where she activated the computer.  "I will send her an introductory message, tagging you on the message so she will recognize all future correspondences you make.  I would recommend not using your Starfleet mailing address - it's unlikely she will respond otherwise.  Also, as you seem to imply that this is a sensitive subject if you would like it kept that way I will provide you both with an encryption key to a code that I developed myself."  The code was one she would use when sending messages to other family members which she didn't want to be easily intercepted by just your every day snoop.
She doubted it would keep serious hackers out but it was better than nothing.

She opened a message recorder and with Tess sitting off to the side, out of view of the camera for the moment, Karinne began recording.

She faced the camera and inclined her head respectfully.  "Jolan tru, Arrain t'Raghaellh." she greeted before introducing herself.  "I am former erei'Riov t'Movel of the Romulan Star Navy.  In a matter of mnhei'sahe, I have been requested to facilitate the introduction of someone seeking information to which you may have knowledge of."

Karinne continued speaking. "The woman's name is Tess and she is the wife of a... " she hesitated a brief moment switching out her usual term of traitor for something more likely to gain Tess the information she sought.  "relocated Romulan.  During my few dealings with her over the past few months, she has impressed me with her integrity and sincerity.  I make this introduction certain in the knowledge that she intends no harm to any Rihanssu and that this request has no political motivation.  She is seeking information on the status of an individual after Hobus - a relative of her husband, I believe."

Karinne kept her eyes directed towards the computer camera, though she was curious as to Tess' reaction to both her positive introduction and her assumption on who the individual was. "I would ask that if you are able to respond to her request without breaking oath that you please do so.  I will be passing on your contact information to her this night and anticipate that she will be in touch with you shortly.  For her privacy and yours, I am including with this message an encryption key that can be downloaded only once, so please don't lose it."

Feeling that was all that needed to be say,  Karinne began to wrap things up.  "I remain ever faithful to the Rihanssu." she inclined her head once more towards the camera. "Jolan tru."

She reached out and turned off the recorder, before turning to look to Tess.  "Will that suffice as a message of introduction?"

[Dining Room]

Rayek was not mollified by Lared's assurances of Tess' safety; and he ignored the gesture to sit back down at the table.   However, when the other man commented about Karinne's interest in Tess as Clan head, there was a look of hesitancy.   Rayek knew there were traditions that he was not well-informed of.  Still frowning, Rayek returned to the dinner table.  The elder Romulan had been civil during the dinner.  It was a big ask of Rayek but he would give the woman the benefit of the doubt.  He would give the woman 10 minutes after that he would retrieve his wife regardless of any traditions.

Tess nodded at Karinne's instructions. The Romulan didn't have to tell Tess not to use or wear anything that would give away that she was in Starfleet. When Karinne started to record, Tess got up and quietly moved to the door so she could warn Karinne if someone was approaching the room they were in. Especially with Rayek she wasn't sure if he would not barge in here given the history of them and the former Romulan Commander.

While Tess listened at the door she also overheard Karinne's message. She smiled a little when she spoke well of her and it brought her hopes up that this Taheen would actually be willing to help her.
Tess did glance over to her though when she stated her assumption as to who the man was she was asking about. The woman had a sharp mind. Though it probably wasn't too far off to guess for her either. Tess broke eye contact and looked away, trying her best not to give any hints of her assumption was correct or not.

When Karinne finished the message, Tess looked over to her and nodded her head at her question. "This will do." She smiled a little. "Thank you. Your help really means a lot to me."

Lared waited patiently for Rayek to react and as expected, their guest ignored the offer to sit back down. But something he had said must have made Rayek think, for eventually he accepted his offer and moved to the dinner table.

Lared gave a relieved glance to his wife before he joined Rayek. Picking up the bottle of wine once more, he refilled Rayek's glass and careful not to spill any of the content put it down in front of Rayek. "To resume where we were interrupted before", he said as he then refilled his own glass and then looked to his wife. "You want some more too, e'lev?" Then regarded Rayek again. "I think it would be interesting for the children to actually visit a session of the Senate. And for me as well, admittedly", he chuckled softly. "Would that be possible to program?"

Karinne nodded accepting the gratitude that Tess showed with words and smile.  "You aided Jinsux and Tordel... mnhei'sahe would not be satisfied without doing something in kind."

Standing, she turned off the computer.  "Now we should go before your husband comes searching for you."

She opened the door and ushered Tess out into the hall.   "Phara tells me that she is preparing a H'dl Aefvadh for the babe when it is born.  At first, I was appalled that such an event was being planned for a mixed breed - but realized that perhaps that makes it ever more important.  You can't be too careful." the elderly Romulan commented, following behind as the pair neared the dining room doorway.

Rayek held his glass out at little further away this time - in case of another spill.  Then while Lared refilled his and his wife's, Rayek sipped at the Romulan wine trying not appear tense and ruin what had been, up until just a moment ago, a very pleasant evening.

His attention returned to Lared when the man spoke about wanting his children to experience a session at the Romulan Senate.   Having sat through City Council meetings in his youth, Rayek doubted there would be much interest there... at least for the younger children.  Tordel  would be of an age to understand better the strategy and tactics involved in politics.

"Yes, programming a Senate session would be rather easy.  Though I think you might be a little naive in thinking the children would fine much interest in seeing one."

Hearing the muffled voice of Karinne approach, Rayek turned towards the Dining room doorway to greet the returning women.   He hadn't caught the entire conversation... in fact all he'd managed to catch was the last statement of 'You can't be too careful'.   Rayek certainly agreed with that sentiment.

"Can't be too careful about what?" Rayek asked, trying to join into the conversation to be sure Karinne wasn't making her evening difficult.

Even if everyone tried to take it lightly, there was a certain tension in the room now. Lared hoped, if they gave Rayek a moment longer, he would relax again.
After he had refilled his wife's and his own glass with wine he leaned back in his chair while Rayek answered his question. He raised his eyebrow slightly when Rayek suggested he was being naive. He found the statement a little bold, but he didn't let it show on his face - apart from the raised eyebrow maybe. He took another sip from his wine before he leaned forward again to put down the glass and give his guest a good-natured smile. "I am aware that Jinsux and Cemee might not find it the most exciting thing in the world, but I welcome some level of educational activity for them as well once in a while."

Hearing the muffled conversation coming from the hallway Lared turned his head to watch the women's arrival.

Tess too stood up and made sure she tucked the clan pin in her pocket so she would not lose it. Stepping outside into the hallway, Tess listened as Karinne brought up the Romulan baby-welcome-ceremony Phara was planning for her - and what Tess still had to tell Rayek about. She couldn't wait for it. Tess had read about the H'dl Aefvadh and knew why that ceremony was held in the first place - but of course Tess had a different view on that than Romulan culture dictated. That Karinne stated that mixed breeds were more prone to develop abnormities wasn't even an untrue thing to say, just that it didn't matter for her.

Before Tess could reply something to that they arrived at the dining room where Rayek seemed to have been waiting for them - and apparently had picked up on the last thing Karinne had said to her in the hallway since he was asking what they were talking about.

Tess smiled at Rayek and moved over to him with a big smile when she saw him in stainless top once more. It seemed now was the moment she would tell Rayek of their plans. Tess briefly looked to Phara with a grin and then back to Rayek. "We were talking about something we have planned for when our baby is born. There is the Romulan tradition of H'dl Aefvadh, a welcome ceremony for the baby." Tess beamed at Rayek. "Phara is so kind to organize it." The huge grin lingered on her face as she observed Rayek's for his reaction to that, anticipating a smile in return.
