Seeing Doctor Vaughan's gesture, Martin headed over.  "What can I do for you, Doctor?" he asked with a smile.

Lizzie lifted Alys, who had noticed Martin and was gurgling at him, slightly and looked at the Crewman.

"Would you like to hold her? You are going to be her Godfather after all." She asked.

Lek watched the exchange between the doctor and Jackson with fascination and great relief as he was terrified she was going to ask him to hold the youngling, something hadn't the slightest idea how to do or wanted to do.

"I will leave you two to discuss your ceremony as this is not a task I know anything about. I'm much more comfortable with aligning warp fields than anything to do with younglings."

He maintained his smile, but he stepped back to make sure he was out of reach.

Lizzie lifted Alys, who had noticed Martin and was gurgling at him, slightly and looked at the Crewman.

"Would you like to hold her? You are going to be her Godfather after all." She asked.

"Absolutely, thank you!" Martin answered, leaning down and taking the baby.  He wasn't quite absorbed enough by the action not to notice the increasingly-uncomfortable mannerisms of Lek, which gave him a small chuckle.

Perhaps it was his imagination, but it always seemed that Alys quite liked Martin.  He liked to think she was just naturally adventurous, and liked high places.  Then again, he did show her positive attention at every possible opportunity.  Doctor Vaughan was an amazing medical professional, of course, but Martin had been doing plenty of studying on his own in his downtime regarding Bajoran/Cardassian hybrid children.  This had become increasingly important to him since he found out that he was going to be the child's Godfather.  Miss Vaughan would certainly take care of the girl's health, but Martin's fitness expertise and passion could be a useful influence on a growing child.

Martin put his forehead against Alys's, saying, "Hey, you, are you enjoying the ceremony?  Liking the attention?"

Jettis Jyur

Lizzie nodded, touched again by the generosity of the crew.

"Thank you Jett. Both for your offer and compliment." She replied, blushing slightly at his kind words. "Though a good CMO is only as good as their team. And I have an excellent one." She replied, trying to stave off more praise.

Jettis chuckled again, smiling. "Of course, and a team is only as organized as their leader." Falling quiet and sparing her from any more compliments, he fell quiet and listened curiously as the Engineering officer arrived.

As the conversation came 'round to traditions and the like, Jettus decided to pipe up again, albeit quieter, his soft spoken and asocial nature kicking in. "In certain factions on El-Auria prime we have many many traditions for when children are born or taken into a family. Doubly so depending on their heritage, and especially hybrid children. It's, ah, perhaps what a human would call too much welcome." he smirked, sipping at his water.

"However it is overwhelmingly kind both to the parents and the child, save for keeping them both up past their bed time."

Rhymus sauntered into the mess hall, formal uniform freshly pressed. As he walked, he grabbed a nearby glass of champagne and walked up behind the Ferengi. Patting him on the shoulder, he smirked.

"Kids not your thing, Lieutenant?"

Lek sighed as Cleroux spoke as this was not a discussion he wished to have with anyone, let alone him, but he wouldn't be backed into a corner by anyone.

"Younglings are an expensive investment with extremely high risk and requiring far too much effort to justify the cost. It is not a sound business model. I am here as a courtesy to Doctor Vaughn as this event is important to her. Before you judge me, do you see yourself tied to a youngling crewman?"

Rhymus sipped his champagne.

"Depends on who the 'youngling' is. I seem to be doing just fine with you." He chuckled. "More seriously? Seeing myself tied to a child requires I have one myself. So to answer your question, No. Perhaps in the future. Humans don't see children as an investment, it's a step. Whether that step is in the right or wrong direction remains to be seen. But Doctor Vaughan is a very capable woman. I'd be surprised if she even broke a sweat caring for little Alys. And even if she does, she has 550 aunts and uncles to help take care of her. Or is it 549?"

Rhymus looked down at the Ferengi, an eyebrow raised.

Lek kept his expression neutral as he replied.

"Height is not a sign of superiority Hewmon. Of all that you said, the only part I know I can agree on is that Doctor Vaughn is most capable for a Fee-male. This youngling faces more challenges than most because of her heritage and if anyone can succeed in her upbringing, it will be the good doctor."

"Just you watch, Lieutenant. That little girl will be brokering peace agreements between Bajor and Cardassia before even we know it. In the meantime, however, she'll need some negotiating skills training from her top Ferengi. Think you can help?"

Lek eyed Cleroux skeptically.

"All things are possible, but I doubt Doctor Vaughn would have must interested in me instructing her youngling on business and the Rules of Acquisition. Besides, she is feemale, it is unlikely she will have the Lobes for such things."

"Don't be so sure. Cardassians are cunning, Bajorans are strong-willed. Sounds to me like perfect traits for Starfleet's next great diplomat."

"She might be a most suitable diplomat, but I was speaking of business as stated in the 94th Rule of Acquisition, 'Females and finances don't mix.'"

"Perhaps on Ferenginer, but young Alys is most certainly not Ferengi. You would be surprised what a strong woman can do with the right resources. Take Joan of Arc, for example." Rhymus took another sip, always delighted to bring up his own country's history, it would seem.

Lek frowned as he went through what he knew of human history and finally shook his head in exasperation.

"Hewmon history is not my specialty. I do not know this Joan of Arc person. However, despite not knowing, I know that many cultures view feemales differently than do Ferengi. Even Grand Nagus Zek thought so, but his successor Grand Nagus Rom wasn't strong enough to hold back the reactionary forces of two hundred years of deeply ingrained traditions. Zek and Rom are now considered the deepest of heretics.

"In Starfleet, I have seen many feemales that were extremely competent and Doctor Vaughn is among those. This youngling will have many opportunities she otherwise would not have thanks to the Doctor's intervention and we will all simply have to wait and see what course those opportunities reveal."

Bonnie Moors

Enlisted Mess Hall

Bonnie walked into the mess hall full of people, large crowds were gathered in various positions and Bonnie stopped just before the door. She sighed quietly to herself. 'How did I end up getting here then?' Bonnie asked herself. She'd only got on the ship the day before, and she found herself at the CMO's adopted daughter's christening. She knew the girls name was Alys, but not the CMO's name and yet she was still invited.

Bonnie wasn't really sure what to wear when she'd got the invite, she spent a while trying to think on something and settled in a shirt with the sleeves rolled up to just before her forearm, a pair of fitted smart black trousers, and a pair of smart shoes, the kind of clothes she'd probably wear when she was working but with the exception of a lab coat, or something to wear to make her look a little more official. But it looked smart enough, or at least she thought it did.

Bonnie walked further into the mess and looked around, the groups of Starfleet officers put Bonnie off socialising, she couldn't just walk over to a group and introduce herself. They all know each other, Bonnie didn't know anyone. Rather than walking up to one of the groups, Bonnie opted to sit down and wait for the christening to start, introduce herself to the CMO and congratulate her, then leave after. Unless someone came and introduced them-self to her.
