Yellowstone Class Runabout

In 2371, development began on the Yellowstone Class Runabout, which was intended to be an upgrade to the Danube class.  Although the Danube class had proven immediately successful upon its release in the mid 2360's, speed was a perceived issue limiting the class' utility.  The Yellowstone project sought to increase speed by employing supercharged Tetryon plasma in the warp systems, but there were initial problems with dilithium fracturing.   By 2375, Yellowstone development was complete, and the Yellowstone entered production.   Many older Danube class ships eventually had their warp systems refit to the Yellowstone standard, and were reclassified as being Yellowstone class on official Starfleet rolls to differentiate them from the original Danube class configurations.

By employing Tetryon Plasma in its warp systems, the Yellowstone class runabout can achieve a much higher warp efficiency and increased warp speeds.   By the late 2390's, the Yellowstone itself had become a ubiquitous runabout design used in all corners of Federation space, and Starfleet was reaching for its next big warp development for small mission craft.

Cobra Class Light Patrol Craft

The Cobra Class Light Patrol Craft is more accurately classified as a light fighter, and is often referred to as such.  It was deployed during a time when the Federation was showing great reticence in labeling any piece of hardware with a hostile tag, regardless of its actual intended use.

The Cobra is the uprated, warp-capable, and armed version of the Garter Class Flight Trainer in use at Starfleet Academy from 2365 to 2385.   Intended to perform system patrols in potentially dangerous territory, the Cobra is designed to respond to any threat inside the envelope of a system's Oort cloud within 1 hour.

Sporting four nose-mounted phaser arrays and one aft array, the Cobra class is capable of engaging threats more capably than a shuttle, but lacks the firepower of a Runabout.  Usually employed in flights of 4, the craft rely on their maneuverability and on-board electronic countermeasures to survive enemy fire.  They do possess limited shielding, but this is seldom adequate to resist more than momentary energy weapon contact or a near-miss with torpedoes.

The Cobra is capable of nimble atmospheric maneuvering, and can land and take off vertically from a planet's surface if necessary.

By the late 2390's, the Cobra was a somewhat outdated design which had been superseded by more capable craft in most regions, but it remained a valuable tool in combating pirate and criminal activity in places where the presence of Starfleet was not well established.

Specifications
Length: 12 meters
Width: 10.5 meters
Height: 2.5 meters
Crew Complement: 1 Pilot
Passenger Capacity: None

Propulsion:
Maximum Warp Speed: Warp 5.5 (303c for 30 minutes)
Sustainable Warp Speed: Warp 4 (102c for 18 hours)

Armaments
Five Type VI Phaser Arrays with ACB jackets for superluminal engagement

King Cobra Class Heavy Patrol Craft

The King Cobra Class Heavy Patrol Craft is an evolution of the Cobra Class.  In the late 2390's after a Dosi attack on Katra station, the station commander Captain Solluk requested permission from Starfleet to explore potential upgrades to make a more robust patrol platform.  Those upgrades culminated in the creation of the King Cobra.  This uprated craft sported twin forward/aft torpedo launchers, a tetryon pumped warp core, and uprated deflectors.  The design also included a second seat for a tactical specialist who also served as a signals officer, specializing in ECM/ECCM as well as target tracking.  This specialist could be pulled form either Operations or Tactical departments, and was often drawn from the enlisted personnel pool.

Specifications
Length: 12 meters
Width: 10.5 meters
Height: 3 meters
Crew Complement: 1 Pilot, 1 Tactical/Signals Crewman
Passenger Capacity: None

Propulsion:
Maximum Warp Speed: Warp 7 (656c for 1 hour with Tetryon Plasma Superchargers Active)
Sustainable Warp Speed: Warp 4 (102c for 18 hours)

Armaments
Five Type VI Phaser Arrays with ACB jackets for superluminal engagement
Twin fwd/aft torpedo launchers which can be equipped for micro-torpedo launch (12 torpedoes in a magazine feeding both launchers), or standard torpedo loadouts (2 torpedoes pre-loaded, one per tube.)

The Strix Class Federation Attack Fighter was a product of the Dominion War, and it served in several of the important battles of that conflict.  Prior to that war, the Federation did not have a tangible fighter doctrine.  Academy training protocols included the use of 'flight trainers' which fostered the skillset of using nimble craft in combat maneuvers.  However, this sort of task was usually relegated to armed shuttles when it became necessary.  In later years, some of these flight trainers would be redesigned to serve as patrol craft, but there was reticence to label these armed craft as 'fighters' and to use them as such.

In the late 2340's, the Federation became embroiled in skirmishes with the Cardassians which would eventually lead to open warfare.  This conflict required rapid resupply of vital equipment and personnel into combat zones.  The Peregrine courier was quickly prototyped and commissioned in 2350 to fulfill this need.  Capable of attaining Warp 9 for limited durations, and maintaining Warp 8 long-term, the 25-meter long vessel could get up to 6 personnel or 1000 kilograms of equipment across a sector in less than a week, and into a neighboring star system within 48 hours.  Its atmospheric flight optimization allowed it to make landings on planets with ease in areas where transporter use was being jammed.  The Peregrine was lightly armed, focusing on speed and maneuverability to deliver its passengers and freight safely, along with a robust hull to survive the occasional weapons impact.

In 2370, a handful of decommissioned 20-year-old Peregrine class couriers fell into the hands of the Maquis.  The Maquis were a terrorist group in opposition to the Cardassians, because the Cardassians had acquired their colony worlds as part of a peace treaty with the Federation.  The Maquis up-armed their Peregrine couriers and used them with great success in raids upon Cardassian assets.  The Federation took note of this, and began investigating the possibility of issuing an uprated Peregrine class to serve as a type of heavy patrol craft in Starfleet.

In 2372, a conflict with the Klingons and their fleets of small, swift Birds of Prey created greater urgency for the development of the uprated Peregrines, and the following war with the Dominion in 2373 settled the matter.  By the end of 2373, the Strix class of Federation Attack Fighter had entered service.  At this time, the political constraints of nomenclature had fallen by the wayside, and there was no longer any pretense at labeling these craft as anything other than 'fighters.'

The Strix was more than just an armed re-release of the Peregrine courier.  Its internals enjoyed a major redesign, replacing the cargo and passenger holds with upgraded shield and power distribution systems, and giving the class an uprated warp core to provide the power needed for its attack role.  The nacelles were also upgraded with a Tetryon supercharger to enhance short-duration emergency warp speed.

The resulting Strix class attack fighter was capable of carrying 4 full size photon torpedoes and 2 full size quantum torpedoes into battle.  In addition, it sported six Type V phaser emitters and two Type VII pulse phaser cannons.  Its shield systems were capable of absorbing a high-yield photon torpedo impact without failing, an essential feature for a combat-survivable fighter.  This robustness required capital ships to invest a lot of their attention and firepower to destroy these potent craft.  It was in this that the fighters became most useful.  The fighters' weapons did too much damage to be ignored, and yet devoting sufficient firepower to deal with them would mean that Starfleet frigates and cruisers would go unchecked on the battlefield.

The Strix attack fighters would eventually be mothballed shortly after the Dominion conflict, and it was hoped that such craft would no longer be needed within the Federation.  However, in 2399 Captain Solluk of Katra Station would request the re-activation of twenty-four Strix fighters after his squadrons of King Cobra patrol craft were decimated by Wanderer pirates.

Despite being based on a design nearly fifty years old, the Strix was a much more robust and heavier-hitting platform than the King Cobras they were intended to replace.  At twice the size of the King Cobra, the Strix took up much more room in hangar bays, but its survivability was much greater.  After losing an entire squadron of King Cobras, Solluk hoped that the venerable but proven Strix would have greater combat endurance.
