The Aerie Class civilian cutter was Yoyodyne Propulsion's 2350 entry into the civilian starship market.  Previously known primarily for constructing discrete warp engine systems, Yoyodyne had been looking for an affordable way to expand their operations into 'complete starship solutions' for decades.  Their challenge was to come up with a design that could be constructed within the older nacelle manufacturing facilities which they already owned and operated.  A light civilian cutter proved to be just what the engineer ordered.

Available in 3 models ranging from the A-Type 4 deck hull to the C-Type 'compact' 2 deck hull, the Aerie quickly became popular among civilian operators due to its versatility and suitability for virtually any job.  From freighter, to transport, to scientific research vessel, and even paramilitary craft, thousands of Aeries entered the market and briefly dominated the lightweight ship sector from 2350 to 2358.  Construction of the Aerie Class came to an end in 2365 with over 50,000 units sold.

The Red Phoenix is a Type C Aerie Class often seen operating from Starbase Columbus.  Constructed in 2350, it was among the first models of Aerie to see service.
