Character Bio:
Born to the humble roots of a farming family on Coltar IV in August of 2374, Silas' love of adrenaline and adventure was quite apparent from an early age. While his brothers could often be found tending to the duties of the farm, Silas would spend his days in and around the race yard watching races roaming the pits or trying to steal a ride on one of the ultra modified shuttlecraft. His love of speed lent to both great accomplishments and utter disasters, such as becoming the youngest racer to win the Trials of Coltar and crashing his fathers brand new shuttle racing in unsanctioned territory.

In late 2389 an accident with some farming equipment took the life of Silas mother, Jane. It was harvest time, the busiest of time of the year, and once again Silas had shirked his duties and disappeared into the pits leaving his mother to pick up the slack. While Jane was used to her second born dodging his duties and having to pick up the slack, this days work load was far too much for one person to handle and as such her concentration was all over the place. It was nearing the end of the day and exhaustion had came and went leaving Jane in a sort of zombie like stupor, not the best state while working with high power high speed machines, especially ones in such disrepair. Missing guards, exposed wires, and sharp corners were just a few of the safety violations found during the investigation following the accident. A simple misstep into an area that should have been protected by a safety guard left Jane standing directly in the pathway of moving parts and ultimately ended her life. The first few days following her death were filled with shock and disbelief, as with most untimely deaths, but it didn't take long for the grief to turn to anger and then turn to hate.

James, Silas' father, had no shame in pointing the finger and laying all the blame squarely at his sons feet, after all if Silas has not ditched his work his mother wouldn't have needed to operate that machine. His father was also fond of mentioning that the guards that should have saved her life were only missing because Silas had scraped them to be used on one of his ridiculous racers or some other nonsense that did nothing to contribute to the family. It wasn't long before Silas tolerance had worn thin and he made the decision to strike out on his own. At the ripe age of 15 he had little in the way of money or valuables but his time in the race pits had earned him a fair amount of contacts and favors and at least a place to call home.

Silas spent the next few years delving deeper into the race scene and culture spending much of his time working on and racing a wide variety of planetary and eventually spacecraft both legally and not so legally. He used racing to earn a living but it was also much more then that, it was his escape from reality, his drug. When the adrenaline was pumping through his veins his mind was free and clear, his thoughts were rarely of his mother or father or the burdens of life. Eventually though the high slowly disappeared, the breath taking stunts and death defying near misses that once had his heart racing no longer excited him. Performing them time and time again left them feeling boring and like second nature. It was around this point that Silas began to search for new possibilities, having recently turned 18 meant he had a far greater range of choices and he felt the need to explore them and leave Coltar IV and his old life behind. He would never be relegated to a life such as his fathers, that of a farmer.

It was his closest friend Dean that first suggested Starfleet, up to that point it had never really crossed Silas' mind, but after some thought it did seem to fit. Starfleet offered a lot of opportunity and adventure, far more than this world would ever show, and best of all it meant leaving Coltar behind for good. By the time Silas reached Earth he turned 21 a bit older than most recruits but still just as eager.

Previous Role-Playing Experience: I've been rping since age 11(about 19 yrs now) in various settings including everything from dungeons and dragons/middle earth to star trek, both tabletop and play by post. I did quite a lot on msn in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Department Preference: Flight Control

Secondary Department Preference: Engineering

Commissioned, Enlisted or Civilian: Commissioned

Sample post:
(Location: Starfleet Academy, Starship simulator)

Silas studied the readings coming across the terminal in front of him, a look of displeasure streaked across his face as he spoke.

"I'm sorry Sir, but from what these readings are telling me its far too dangerous to pilot through that asteroid field, there are too many variables for a ship this size."

Silas sat in Silence and kept his gaze on his station, there had to be a solution here he just wasn't seeing. There were no discernible patterns within the field nor were there any smooth flowing sections, asteroids of varying sizes danced about bouncing off one another in an endless cycle, never resting for more than a second or two. It was mesmerizing, beautiful, and had Silas almost entranced by its seemingly defiant nature.

As he stared at the screen his thoughts drifted back to his teenage years and racing the canyons in the mountains of Coltar IV, dodging the rock-slides and random debris deposited by the most recent storms gave him an idea.

"Sir, I have an idea i think could get us through this," Silas spoke with confidence.

"Back when I raced pods on Coltar we would do team runs through the canyons for practice. The first one through would always report back what they ran into so the rest could adapt and keep pace. If we use that same technique here, with a shuttlecraft screening our movements, it would at last give us better odds at making it through."

Silas turned in his chair to face the captain eager for his approval. This would be the first chance for him to stand out and make his mark on his fellow peers and instructors and his heart was ready to burst at the mere idea of it. So he sat there awaiting the captains response almost the way a dog waits for a ball to be thrown.

Additional information: Silas is driven and confident in his abilities, though not so much as to lend to arrogance. He is an adrenaline junkie through and through and is always willing to push his limits physically and mentally. He tends to be a bit headstrong and wants to stand out from the crowd. He is loyal to a fault always looking out for those he cares about, this comes from his days rolling with the racer crews on Coltar IV. His humble farming upbringing with its boring lifestyle and his love of adrenaline combined within him and brought forth a desire to be greater than the sum of his parts, to leave a great mark on the universe whatever it may be.

Silas,

An interesting application.

The Challenger needs a Flight Control Officer.

Would that work?

Welcome to the fleet!

I'm the Flight Control Course instructor. Because you're new here, you are required to pass the Officer Training Course to demonstrate your Trek knowledge, RP skills, and understanding of posting requirements. It helps you get familiar with the Shadow Fleet style and be eligible for promotions, and plus it gives you something to do as you prepare to join your crew. The OTC is actually quite simple, you can write what you like within the prompts, and you get to work at your own pace, but the longer you take, the longer it will be before you become active within the SIMM.
