Declan was a third-generation colonist on Daran V, a world where the predominant and indigenous species was a race of Avians.  He grew up in the more seedy 'foreign' district of one of the principle cities, Daraniss - population of 10 million. It his youth, he had crossed paths with the more nefarious denizens of the city whose attempt at greed or consumption was very evident. Ferengi and Orion 'merchants' had long made a foot hold in the district and by the time Declan was a police constable, their power and influence had become a black stain. Declan was among the few who wasn't intimidated by the Orion crimelord, Orton Va'sule, whose Syndicate connections were well established in the sector. Even as the Dominion War was heating up elsewhere, Orton was trying to sell black market weapons and information to the Cardassians in the hopes of furthering his little fiefdom on recently occupied Betazed.

His precinct was bombed, several officers were murdered before a joint Starfleet/police task force finally brought Orton down. He was sentenced to Tantalus V for life. Declan's involvement as the police force's point man gained him promotion as well as a bulls eye by Orton's cronies.

Declan met and fell in love with an Andorian colonist/doctor, Sona h'Awh. They met during one of his many stops at the local hospital for an assortment of wounds inflicted during his career. The courtship led to marriage where he came face to face with the distinctive Andorian reproductive necessities. His new wife was a shen, one of the four genders of her people. He could inseminate her, with medicinal assistance, but another female Andorian, a zhen, would carry the fetus to term. Ta'al resided with the couple like a surrogate mother and the bond between the three was extremely close.

Orton's revenge was a patient one. By 2385, ten years since his incarceration, his attempt to eliminate Declan had cost Sona her life. The death of his wife had taken a toll on Declan who was left to raise an eight year old boy, whose appearance was more of her than him. Ta'al returned to help raise him as he spiraled into  his own depression, leaving the police force to enlist in Starfleet during the Iconian war. He followed orders as a security specialist, getting commendations but had little interaction with his fellow crewmen. After his five-year enlistment that had included the conflict, he returned to Daran V. He had an affair with Ta'al, as some counselor might expect was his own way of connecting to his dead wife. He drank, he gambled, he was a mess.

by 2395, he had changed his ways, his now estranged adult son had since joined Starfleet and Declan, tired of simply coasting through what ever life he had, reenlisted into Starfleet, hoping to leave Daran V and her ghosts behind him.

Sample post:
Declan stared in the mirror at his reflection. His uniform was impeccable; nothing out of place. His hair, on the other hand, had been receding as if a Klingon bird-of-prey had begun an all out attack. Human vanity had become less ominous over the centuries but his awkwardness was not caused by simple appearance but what it meant. He was getting old and even if by chance he survived to 125 years, the decades that had passed him by were gone, along with his youth and innocence.

On this ship, many of his grade were less than half his age with dreams so big he could not sigh fast enough. His own son, should their paths ever cross, was an officer and thus a superior. Was he being foolish trying to recapture something? He wasn't sure and was fairly confident that the days ahead would either surprise or horrify him.

His roommate, one of those 'half his age' recruits was lying on his bed watching him. The smile on his ebony features had fractured into a smile then the accompanied laughter. "If you keep looking at yourself, I am sure you will not get any younger. Besides, your Security, at the very lease, as long as you can keep up to the other guards without panting, you'll be fine."

Declan turned with his serious demeanor at Augustus Duguay, the mischievous corpsman who only shrugged. "Aren't you on duty in Sickbay in fifteen?"

Augustus shook his head. "No, my shift got changed around so I'm going to the Holodeck with Miles for that ancient western program. The Sheriff kind of looks like you but less gray in his beard." The young recruit joked as he stood up. "You should join us sometime. I told Miles you are a heck of a fast draw."

Declan smiled, his demeanor softening. "Jesse James keeps gunning you down, I probably have too."

=/\= Recruit Vincent, report to the Armory for away team deployment. =/\=

Declan tapped his commbadge to reply, his serious, duty expression having returned. =/\= Recruit Vincent here. On my way. =/\=

Whether a policeman or a Starfleet security guard, to serve and protect was still his motto.

Declan,

A very nice post.

I typically give people their first department choice and that is still an option.

But greatest need is currently on the Discovery numbers-wise.  We could use an Engineer on the ship.

Would you be ok starting in Engineering there and moving to Sec/Tac later (a Sec/Tac spot on the Discovery will likely open soon).

Please let me know,

Kirok

Yes, the engineering position will be fine, Kirok

Kirok

Perfect!

You can start posting on the mission right away.

Tekin is on the Bridge and needs some help in Engineering.

If you can reply from Engineering, that would be great.

Welcome aboard,

Kirok

PS - I can have your Enlisted Class started right away if you like.  Please advise.

Welcome to the fleet!

I'm the Enlisted Persons Course (EPC) instructor. Because you're new here, you are required to pass the EPC to demonstrate your Trek knowledge, RP skills, and understanding of posting requirements. It helps you get familiar with Shadow Fleet style and be eligible for promotions, and gives you something to do until you get active in a game. :) It's pretty simple, you can write what you like for it within the prompts, and work at your own pace, but it's better to do it quickly.

Your Level One EPC starts here:
