[Shuttlebay]

While it was unusual for them to utilize all four of Discovery's Type-9 shuttlecraft, Alex wasn't overly concerned; they had an abundance of pilots with the MVA system inoperable, and the shuttles had all recently gone through their full maintenance rotations. Boarding the first, he nodded towards his co-pilot, a young andorian ensign. "Get us up, Malvar."

Keying the comms system as soon as they came online, Alex hailed the bridge. =/\="Bridge, this is the shuttlecraft Stockwin. Requesting launch clearance for ourselves, and shuttlecraft O'Brian, Forester, and Ludlow."=/\=

[Bridge]

EQ tapped a few buttons.  Then opened a channel.  -/\-You are clear to launch, Mr. Wu.  Godspeed-/\- Kimball said and then ended the transmission.

"Aye, sir. No surprises coming up." LK's voice had dropped as she spoke, her fingers moving over the console rapidly.

Trying to remember everything she knew about Talaxians, Dr. Reede nodded to herself and started looking for any other piles of debris or storage areas. And there it was.

What appeared to be storage containers a good 40 km from the city. She turned to the XO. "I don't know if this means anything, sir, but there's a cache of something to the northwest."

[Bridge]

EQ looked up at the main screen, thinking he would see what LK had mentioned.  Instead he saw movement off to the port side of the screen.  "Sir, I think we have company" Kimball said.

The waiting game... that was the worst thing to do on a starship.  Lifesigns were tracked, transporters were locked, but until they heard from the Admiral... it was just waiting.  So much so that Nevir missed the clearance from Wu.  Luckily, Kimball was right on the money as it were.

LK's words snapped him out of it, and he looked up at the viewscreen, seeing just the planet ahead.  He thought for a moment... if anything, this would be a good chance to prove if they were the vultures.

"That might be what we're looking for... onscr-"

Nevir's head crooked to the left as his eyes shot to the edge of the screen.  He thought he saw something, but it was just out of view.  At least for this current angle.

"Full sensor sweep.  Find that object.  Advise the shuttles that there may be something up here with us."

Kirok looked from Geefix back to the doctor.  When the silence went long enough he turned back to Geefix.  "Perhaps that is something we might be able to discuss in private" he suggested.

"Certainly.  If you will follow me" Geefix said.  His excitement of making a quick sale dwindling as he did.  But he turned and let the way.

Interesting. They were selling. “An offer well that will be up Starfleet,” the Vorta replied. “It is not my choice. I was always afraid the Borg will always come back to its wounded puppy. You know a mother who protects her kind always come back.” Sadly. It was another attempt on these feathered head creatures.

Now, if he was a diplomatic mission with this with Dominion. He would figured the Jem’Mar would look forward to fight the Borg one on one. Or ship by ship. In their pathetic military brains that would be a dream of a fight. Then they would be over run by the Borg and be part of their collective. So if he was running that some sort of mission for the Founders. He would excute these fools with everything on this planet.  It that was how he would do from his point of view in his old life. However, he was practitioner of medicine. A complete failure saving the Founder who had the disease which The Great Founder of ALL Odo had saved the gods. A true god of power.

[Science Lab]

Awen glanced down at the console before her, making a few adjustments regarding how often the data in the lab synced with the main computer system. Running the synchronization again, the system seemed to retrieve the data a little faster. It wasn't ideal, but while repairs were still being completed the adjustment would help. The Bajoran glanced back towards Kinley as she spoke.

"I can do that," Awen replied with a nod. "As head of the department, I believe it's your prerogative if you want to head to the bridge, Commander." Perhaps once Kinley completed the updates, that would also improve the connection speed. She could still run her tests as well. "Good luck, ma'am; if you need any assistance, let me know. And I think we've probably had enough explosions on the ship for awhile. I don't think Operations or Engineering would be very happy about additional repairs."

Thus far, she hadn't worked with the man Kinley had mentioned, though she had seen him around the labs. Awen could imagine that working with potentially dangerous chemicals was something one would need precision and care to do. It certainly wasn't her concentration, but she had a working knowledge of it regardless.

Awen nodded to Kinley before looking back at the screen. A planetary analysis would likely be useful... As she began setting up the parameters for the analysis, the Bajoran heard Admiral Kirok's voice.

Raising an eyebrow, Awen looked up from her work and caught Kinley's eye. Apparently neither of them would be working on what they thought. Although Kirok hadn't specified it, she presumed the summons meant that they were going down to the planet. It would have been helpful to know their purpose so she could have prepared properly for the away mission...

"I'll gather up some supplies, then head to the Transporter Room, Commander. You don't need to wait for me, but I'll leave that up to you," Awen told her. Since Kinley was her superior, Awen left the acknowledgment to Kirok to her.

Awen took out a PADD and transferred the data they'd collected onto it. Theoretically they wouldn't need it, but it seemed wise to take it just in case. Moving to a shelf behind her, Awen picked out a small over the shoulder away case and sat it on a nearby table before opening it. She collected some sample containers, a basic testing kit, and a specialized scientific tricorder, then placed everything in the case along with the PADD.

After one more glance around the room, she nodded, satisfied that she had everything she could think of. Time to meet up with the others in the Transporter Room. Awen slipped the case's strap around her neck, adjusting the case so it was next to her opposite hip, before heading out of the science lab.

[Transporter Room 1]

After acquiring the rest of the standard away mission gear on her way, Awen arrived at the doors to Transporter Room 1. This would be her first official away mission as a member of the Discovery, so she hoped to make a good impression. She wasn't particularly thrilled with the idea of the Vorta coming with them, but there was nothing she could do about that.

The Bajoran stepped forward and moved into the room, nodding to the transporter operator, standing ready to beam them out. She moved off to the side so she was out of the way and waited for the others to show up.

OFF: Tag Kinley, away team

[science labs – transporter room.]
Kinley nodded her agreement as she followed Awen out to the transporter room and to the transport room. Awen knew what she was doing, and for the time being, Kinley was content with just following, and grabbing the necessary standard tricorders. Grinning her acknowledgment to the others, Kinley stepped onto the transporter and braced herself for the inevitable queasiness that would follow going on the transporter.
Beaming down, Kinley looked at the Talaxians with a look of confusion. Leaning over to Awen, she whispered. “This doesn’t feel quite right Awen, keep your eyes open”

Awen's attention turned briefly back towards Kirok and the Talaxian; it seemed they wanted to speak in private. She wasn't sure if Kirok meant just the two of them or if the away team was meant to follow as well. The Admiral hadn't specified, so for the time being she kept following them. If nothing else, the rest of the away team could wait outside.

Beaming down, Kinley looked at the Talaxians with a look of confusion. Leaning over to Awen, she whispered. “This doesn’t feel quite right Awen, keep your eyes open”

"Yes, something does seem off," the Bajoran acknowledged. It seemed as if Kinley was distracted by the Talaxians or perhaps something else....or the Chief Science Officer hadn't heard her over the rest of the conversation. Maybe she'd dropped her voice a little too low.

Regardless, she reached into her away case and pulled out the scientific tricorder as she addressed Kinley again. "I'm not sure about you, Commander, but I must admit that I'm rather curious about that city. If it's abandoned, there might be some interesting finds; if it's occupied, perhaps the inhabitants could shed some light on what's happening. Either that or somewhere on this planet there might be some explanation as to why the Talaxians chose it over other planets."

Awen's dark eyes glanced back at the city as they moved further away. Something about this place, this situation, or both was definitely not right. Based solely on what they'd seen, she couldn't quite figure out what though.

Turning on the scientific tricorder, she quickly tapped on the screen and adjusted its settings. Awen decided to start by running a basic scan, then leaving it to a passive scan mode while she did more in depth scans of particles and minerals in the area. With a final tap of a button, the tricorder began its work.

"Commander Garrison, I'm doing a basic scan, then will do some more detailed analytical scans of particles, minerals, and other items of scientific interest to see what I can find. Unless you want to do some of that and have me look into something else," Awen said to her.

The Bajoran glanced from the Lieutenant Commander in services gold to her own department head. They were ranked the same, so she wasn't entirely sure who would be in charge if Kirok did speak with the Talaxian alone. What she really wanted was clearance to investigate that city. Of course, if one of her scans came up with something, that would also give them something to look into.

"Aye, Sir.  Running sensor sweep now" Kimball called out.  "Three vessels heading toward us in a v formation.  Sending the info to Mr. Wu now" he said as he tapped away at his board.

[Bridge]

Nevir kept a curious look on his face, staring at the viewscreen.

"On screen." he aid, as the screen adjusted to show the incoming ships.  They looked... well frankly they didn't seem that well built.  Almost as if they were salvaged, restored, and altered.  It seemed very likely to be the Talaxians.  Nevir relaxed a bit, and shrugged.

"Hail the lead ship." he called, as they approached.  When he didn't hear a confirmation chime, he stood up.  "What's wrong?" he said, turning to one of the other Ops officers on the Bridge.

"Sir, they aren't responding.  I can't read the Captain anymore... or the away team.  I think..." he started, when Nevir's eyes went wide and he turned back to the screen.

"We're being jammed!  Shields u-" Nevir shouted, but the command came too late.

It didn't seem possible, but the alterations on the three small ships gave them weapons that they shouldn't be able to use.. but three torpedoes fired from all three ships, followed by a barrage of phaser fire as the three made a pass over them.  The torpedoes hit in three locations: behind the Bridge, on the engineering spine, and the upper port-side nacelle.  With no shields activated due to their repair work, the hulls were damaged.  The dorsal mini-nacelle, and the larger port nacelle both flickered repeatedly, and then went out; the port nacelle started venting plasma to space.

On the Bridge, consoles blew, and even Nevir was thrown off, landing face-first on the front console level.  As quickly as he could, he stood up.

"I need a damage report!  Engineering!  We needs shields, now!" he shouted, taking his seat.  "With the exception of Wu, we are on our own.  Kimball, do what you can to get power to the defensive systems.  Tell engineering this is a priority command."

Geefix looked at the man for a long while.  It the Vulcan was not interested in his ware, then perhaps the Vorta would be.  He made a note of it and smiled at the Vorta before leading the others to the meeting spot.

Once inside the tent, Kirok spoke again.   "We actually did come down to speak to you about the borg technology you are selling.      But before we get into that, would you mind if my Science team and doctor explore the area?" the half Vulcan asked.

"But of course" Geefix quickly answered.  "And should they find something to their liking then we can negotiate a good trade.  We leaned that from your Captain Janeway" he said.

Kiork offered a nod to his team.  They were free to depart.  And explore if they so wished.

Her screen went dark. LK began to look around to discover what happened and to see if it was her console or everyone's. The bank of computers began to sputter, throwing sparks then the entire ship became a living, writhing thing. LK grabbed at the under edge of the first thing she could see to help steady herself as the ship gained momentum. All in the wrong directions. She'd heard of earthquakes. Was this what it was like? Her feet lost ground and as she fell, she saw the acting captain land face down.

Nevir had a small cut on his chin which didn't seem serious so she would get to him as she worked her way around the bridge. Looking around at each crewmember in turn, LK drew out her medical tricorder. When the ship settled down, she stood, somewhat shakily, and moved from one to another to check for wounds.

[Shuttlecraft Stockwin]

Well that didn't take long, Alex thought to himself grimly as the warning flashed up on his display. O'Brian was on their right in a two ship formation as they did a wide orbit around Discovery; the other two held station next to their mothership. =/\="Discovery, this is Stockwin."=/\= Alex tried to hail Tekin while eyeing the three derelict looking vessels steadily approaching. Frowning when the commlink didn't connect, he glanced down at his console to troubleshoot when a startled yelp from Malvar drew his attention back up.

To his astonishment, the three ships had suddenly accelerated far faster than he had expected. Tabernac, we're out of position! "Malvar, try to hail the others, move them to intercept." Alex snapped, taking manual control to wrench them abruptly around. O'Brian followed them, but they could only watch helplessly as Discovery was caught in the vicious volley. The two shuttles left on guard didn't seem to have much of an impact either, their microtorpedoes and phaser fire blocked by impenetrable shields.

"Fire at will." He directed as they caught up to weapons range, chasing the ships off Discovery's back.

With Kimball's work, the shields slowly appeared, rippling in static across the ship's bubble as it activated.  It wasn't at full strength, but it won't leave them defenseless.  Nevir waived away LK, his chin, while it burned, was not too bad.  Besides, he was wearing red, he could hide it.  As he looked down at the Captain's console, he heard the comm chime.

Nevir grimaced, looking down at the ship's status.  This wouldn't work.  "Negative, Engineering.  I need more than that.  We have no communications with anyone, no way to direct attacks.  Take everyone you need, I want this ship combat ready yesterday!  Bridge out." he replied... falling back to classic move of command telling engineering to do the impossible.

"I need sensors!" he shouted, as he felt the ship rock with another run across the top.

"Sir, fighters have engaged.. but we can't raise them."

"Alright, helm, break us from orbit and bring us about.  We're not going to expose our wounds... but I am not about to lose Wu to a dogfight. I need someone on tactical.  We're mute, not blind... let's show these dukats what happens when you fire against the Federation."

Kirok's left eyebrow arched slightly.  "You knew Captain Janeway?"  the half Vulcan asked.  He stared doing the math in his head.

"Yes" Geefix said.  "I was rather young at the time.  But I was very attentive.  A skill that has served me well, as you can see.  Would you like some tea or a refreshment" the Talaxian replied.

[Planet, Talaxian Camp]

Awen watched as Kirok and the Talaxian moved into a tent. The tent flap was held open, which she took to mean they were meant to go in as well. She followed the rest of the away team inside, curious as to what would be discussed. Nothing seemed particularly out of the ordinary inside, so the Bajoran simply entered and tried to stay out of the way, glancing at her tricorder every so often.

Hearing they had received permission to explore, Awen perked up, and then glanced over at Kinley. Now was their chance... Of course, it sounded like Demlion would be exploring as well and she still wasn't comfortable around the smug Vorta. Steven hadn't been mentioned, so presumably he was staying behind with Kirok.

Awen nodded to Kirok, then slipped back outside the tent. When Kinley emerged after her, she turned to the Chief Science Officer, "Commander, if it's alright with you, I'd really like to get a look at that other city over there... I'd suggest we split up to cover more ground. We could then meet up again after a time to compare notes..."

Once Kinley responded, Awen nodded to her and then started towards the city at the edge of the Talaxian camp.

[Planet, City]

As Awen neared the city, it became more obvious that the city had been abandoned. Exactly how long ago that had occurred wasn't clear, but it was long enough that the buildings were in disrepair. Based on the building materials and the general appearance of the city, whoever had built it was a society with a decent level of technology, but either they were killed or abandoned the city at least fifty years ago based on its current condition.

Her eyes slowly took in the area around her. What once might have been well kept lawns and gardens were now overgrown. Vegetation was growing out of cracks in the streets and trees had fallen on some of the buildings, damaging them. Most of the building materials were neutral, drab colors.

What she really wanted to do was check inside some of the homes and also the larger buildings. Seeing a slightly larger building further down the street, Awen began walking that way. Partway there, though, she heard the sound of a door opening. As she watched, a small group of Talaxians came out, carrying various pieces of equipment. Apparently they had already begun searching for anything valuable...

Quietly, the Bajoran said to herself, "Hopefully they've not emptied everything out already. I'd really like to get a look at what they have." Frowning slightly, she pulled her tricorder out again and began scanning the area to see if anything stood out.

Kirok eyed the refreshments for a moment.  Food and drink had already been put out before they had arrived.  But still there was a possibility of poison.

"I'll have whatever you are having" the half Vulcan said.  It was the most diplomatic answer he could come to.  At least he thought so.

[NPC on Shuttlecraft Stockwin]

"Aye, Sir.  Firing now" the Sec/Tac Officer replied.  Phaser fire ripped a path across space.  It hit the first target.

[Bridge]

With Kimball's work, the shields slowly appeared, rippling in static across the ship's bubble as it activated.  It wasn't at full strength, but it won't leave them defenseless.  Nevir waived away LK, his chin, while it burned, was not too bad.  Besides, he was wearing red, he could hide it.  As he looked down at the Captain's console, he heard the comm chime.

=/\= "Engineering to Bridge!"  =/\=

"Engineering, go." he responded.

=/\= "We're diverting all we can, but that strike took out one of the nacelles.  We're venting plasma.  Best I expect is 60% Shields and phasers."   =/\=

[Bridge]

"I can help with tactical.  If needed, Sir" EQ volunteered.  His board pinged.  "The ships appear to have some Borg tech.  Maybe that is what is blocking comms, Sir" he added.

"Mr. Wu had been working on a solution to that possible problem last month.  We might be able to look into his history.  Maybe try out the idea he had been working on" Kimball suggested.
