Mission Proposal - A Prisoner of Circumstance

Mission Title: A Prisoner of Circumstance

Synopsis: The Tempest receives a distress signal- but not via subspace.  A member of the crew with empathic or telepathic sensitivity is contacted by an alien individual who claims to be trapped on a nearby planet.  When the Tempest investigates, they find a perfectly habitable Class M planet, but no indication of civilization, structures, or sentient alien life.  The alien continues to contact the Tempest and request aid, urgently, and claims it will soon die.  It is a race against time to uncover the truth of the situation and rescue the alien in distress.

Starting Point: The Tempest receives a distress signal- but not via subspace.  A member of the crew with empathic or telepathic sensitivity is contacted by an alien individual who claims to be trapped on a nearby planet.

End Goal: The Tempest frees the alien, and the alien thanks the Tempest by revealing the location of a treasure.

Story points that must be passed?:

I) The Tempest receives a distress signal- but not via subspace.  A member of the crew with empathic or telepathic sensitivity is contacted by an alien individual who claims to be trapped on a nearby planet, held within an energized iron cage.

II) The Tempest arrives at the source of the 'transmission.'   It is a previously unexplored Class M world orbiting a yellow star.  However, there is no sign of habitation or technology on the world.  The alien continues to transmit its woes, and says it will soon die if it is not freed from confinement.

III) Away Teams are dispatched to the planet to conduct exploratory investigations, while personnel on the ship try to figure out where this trapped alien could be.

IV) Away Teams on the surface must deal with some hostile wild life, but nothing sentient that could possibly capture someone in an energized iron cage.   Personnel on the ship note very little of interest about the planet, other than the fact that it has a nickel-iron core with an unusually powerful magnetic signature.

V) While discussing their findings (or lack thereof) the alien's transmissions become ever more desperate.  It laments that it has lived for centuries, and that it will now die this way, captured in an energized iron cage while flying through the system.   Further inquiries will reveal that the alien had no ship- it is able to fly without one.  Even to go to warp without one.  Eventually, the alien will reveal it is an energy-entity, composed entirely of electromagnetic energy patterns.

VI) Science may now put together the truth- the alien was probably captured- not by any intentional act- but rather by the natural properties of the nickel-iron magnetic core of the planet.

VII) Personnel on the ship brainstorm a method to momentarily disrupt the magnetic core of the planet, providing a window for the alien to escape.

VIII) Implementing their solution, they free the alien, which is just an amorphous blob of electromagnetic energy that has somehow attained sentience.  In gratitude, the alien mentions that it has noticed that the Tempest uses a dilithium crystal at the heart of its energy core.  It says there is a nearby planet with vast stores of such crystals, and gives the Tempest directions on how to get there.  Then it departs, flying off to explore the galaxy in its own way.

Departments: (To make sure everyone has something to do.)

- Flight: Shuttles or runabouts might be dispatched to perform a detailed surface scan of the planet

- Engineering: Will be responsible for creating the nuts and bolts manifestation of the solution.

- Operations: Will be responsible for coordinating away teams and also optimizing power utilization to allow the solution to have enough power to work.

- Security and tactical: Will be part of the away teams who search the planet.

- Medical: May help to treat the empath/telepath on board whose health may be impacted by the frantic psionic calls for help.   May also verify that the experiences are real, and not a figment of the crewperson's imagination.

- Science: Will probably be instrumental in coming up with the solution, and also in analyzing the planet.
