She has also studied and continues to practice several kinds of martial arts. While in the Militia, Awen became skilled at hand-to-hand, knife, and small weapons combat. She also gained a little experience with starship weapons in her final year with the Militia. Awen's skills with computers have increased as during her university and StarFleet training she would sometimes need to do some troubleshooting if her Science programs had issues, however it is not her forte.

Bachelor's Degree in Science, concentration spatial anomalies and particles
StarFleet Concentration: Science

Personality
Due to the residual effects of the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor, Awen grew up much faster than most other children. It taught her to be wary of people, seeking out their intentions before opening up to them. She is very dedicated to her causes and is loyal, determined, and strong-willed. Her time with the Bajoran Militia taught her courage, planning, and organization. Not wanting to leave things to chance, Awen has a backup plan for nearly everything. She is also adept at looking at situations and ideas in various ways and from different perceptions, allowing her to make good assessments.

Despite her somewhat skewed outlook on society, Awen has a kind soul deep down. She is very warm and friendly with her friends and family. Her loyalty and caring can sometimes be shown through her protectiveness of others.

 Early life

Awen was born on October 22, 2367 on Bajor, the youngest of three children. Mira and Korin raised their children well and taught them to worship The Prophets. They firmly believed that the Prophets would help save them from the Cardassians. Mira worked as a teacher and their local school, but Korin had joined the Bajoran Resistance several years before Awen was born; he hoped to make a difference and allow his children to finish growing up without the Cardassians' presence.

The year Awen was born, her oldest brother Jorak joined his father in the Resistance. Both Nolis and Awen were far too young to join or help the Resistance, but Nolis eagerly listened to stories of his father and brother's Resistance Cell when they would visit. Unfortunately, late in 2368, Korin returned home without Jorak. Jorak had been captured along with two others during an operation with their Resistance Cell. Despite attempts to find their captured comrades, the Cell had been unable to locate them or confirm if they were still alive. Korin continued working with the Resistance Cell and looked for his son until the end of the Occupation with no luck.

When the Occupation of Bajor ended in 2369, the Fala family did their best to adjust to the new world they lived in. Korin joined the Bajoran Militia, in part to continue looking for Jorak, but also to help his people transition. When he was home, he continued telling his children about the Occupation and Resistance; he didn't want them to forget the world they were born into.

While Awen looked up to her brother and father, she also took an interest in Science. She enjoyed hearing about the Celestial Temple and loved looking at the stars in the night sky. Mira encouraged her daughter, telling her more about the Prophets and astronomy. She also worked on experiments with her.

In school, Awen excelled in science and history. She was a bit of a loner, but had a few casual friends. Her parents had some difficulty trusting others after their experiences with the Occupation and some of that had rubbed off on Awen.

The family eventually learned that Jorak had been killed trying to escape from the Cardassians several months after being captured. One of the other Cell members had been able to escape and tracked the Fala family down to inform them. Upon finding out about the death of his brother, Nolis decided to join his father in the Bajoran Militia.

With both her brother and father gone quite a bit while they were with the Militia, Awen split her free time between Science, joining sports teams, and studying military history. In part, she wanted to honor the memory of her fallen oldest brother whom she had never really known, and also she felt one of the best ways to help Bajor would be to join the Bajoran Militia once she finished school.

In 2384, at the age of seventeen, Awen did just that. She was able to get into the Bajoran Militia's officer training program due to her father and brother's excellent service. While they were glad to have another Militia officer in the family, Mira had hoped that Awen would follow another path. Awen did well in the program, picking up tactics and close combat skills quickly with the help of Nolis and Korvin. A few of her training exercises took her to Deep Space 9, where she got experience on the security team. It was there that she first met StarFleet officers and learned more about the Federation.

As she was finishing the program in 2387, the Hobus star went supernova. Awen became very interested with the event, which also renewed her interest in Science. If the Hobus star could go supernova, which others could potentially devastate other worlds? Although she felt rather torn as to what she should do, Awen ultimately decided to leave the Militia to pursue a degree in Science.

She was accepted into the University of Bajor, where she majored in Science with a concentration in spatial anomalies and particles. Most of Awen's time was devoted to her studies, but she also joined two research teams – one studying the Hobus supernova, the other concentrated on the Bajoran Wormhole. Other than the research teams and her regular classmates, Awen had little time for friends as she threw herself into her studies.

When it was time to graduate in 2391, Awen found herself uncertain of what to do next. She thoroughly enjoyed her studies, but also missed the feeling that she was making a difference on a daily basis – a feeling she had had in the Militia. Unfortunately the Militia was not looking for scientists, but she remembered her conversations with the StarFleet officers stationed on Deep Space 9. Thinking that StarFleet might be a good way to combine her interests, she applied that same year.

Starfleet Career

StarFleet Academy 2391-2395
Awen began her career in StarFleet by joining the Academy in 2391. At the age of 24, she was one of the oldest cadets there which set her apart from the others right away. Feeling somewhat out of place, Awen mainly concentrated on her studies. She missed her family and kept in touch with them regularly; this was her first time being separated from all of them at once.

Since she already had a degree in Science, she had less Science courses to take than most of her fellow cadets. However, she took a few additional programming classes and most of the Security/Tactical courses to help round out her knowledge. Four years later,  Awen graduated from  StarFleet Academy with a major in Science and a minor in Security/Tactical.

Career

Following her graduation from Academy, Awen returned home to visit her family while awaiting her first assignment. While they were all proud of her, she could tell that her father and brother were still disappointed that she left the Militia. Not long after their reunion, Awen received word that she was assigned to the USS Discovery as a Science Officer.

Sample post:
[Bridge, Mission Day 3, 0755 hours]

The turbolift doors swished open as Awen walked onto the bridge for her first shift as Science Officer since graduating the Academy. Some people would be rather nervous about stepping onto the bridge for the first time, but not her. The three years she had spent in the Bajoran Militia had strengthened her confidence in her abilities and her time in Academy and at the University of Bajor made her confident in her knowledge of Science.

Awen nodded to the Commanding Officer, Captain Kagame (NPC), acknowledging his presence as she made her way to her console. If anything, that was what made her slightly on edge - the people. It wasn't that she couldn't work with or handle them - she could. It was because at the moment they were unknowns. She had read their files, but didn't truly know them. After how her people had been treated and oppressed by the Cardassians, her parents' stories about what Bajor was like during the Occupation made her more cautious until she got to know someone.

That would come in time. For now, she had a job to do. The ship was on its way to an outpost at the edge of Federation space. Technically, there was nothing specific for Awen to do just yet, other than to run standard particle and sensor sweeps. It wasn't the most glamorous duty, but it was her duty and she would do her best.

The Bajoran's dark eyes looked up at the main viewscreen; currently there wasn't much to see. Turning her attention back to the console, Awen pulled up the particle scan settings and adjusted them to look for high concentrations of known or unknown particle matter. Her index finger tapped at the screen to start the scan and then brought up the long-range sensors.

Her console beeped and a warning flashed on the screen. Frowning, Awen switched over to monitor the particle scan. Her fingers flew across the screen, bringing up the results and overlaying them onto the map on her screen. "Captain, I'm picking up a large amount of E-band radiation at 242 mark 16; it looks like a star is about to collapse!"

So much for a boring first shift on the bridge. Awen had been certain that her scans would pick up nothing, but it seemed she was wrong. The star was directly in their path...
