Main Engineering
Jada had been focused on managing the EPS power distribution, phasing in the fusion power during the lulls and switching it out during the peaks, while Mortier reduced power demand across the board. Since when did I become an engineer? she wondered in despair at this tedious task. But it wasn't exactly engineering, she decided, more like the kind of economic management Orions had a knack for. 'EPS fluctuations 13%, 5%...' she reported coolly.
But no sooner had she reduced the EPS fluctuations to tolerance levels, then they started to rise again. 'EPS fluctuations rising 31%!' Of course! The mini-universe had detached, it was no longer draining power from the nacelle. The EPS network had been working overtime to supply power; now it was supplying too much. The system was surging, through the nacelle and back out into the rest of the ship. But thankfully Mortier and V'kee had reduced power demands and unnecessary supply, and Jada quickly disengaged the back-up fusion power. 'Disengaging fusion power...' Now the EPS power levels rose steadily back to the specified levels. 'EPS fluctuations 1.54%, well under tolerance.' she reported with relief. Wait. There was no way her job was going to be repeating what the computer said. 'I fixed it.'
She sat back from the chair with relief. It wasn't every day one was attacked by a whole universe. They''d escaped, but Jada couldn't help but think they'd been lucky it was so easy. They were still in the Outer Dark, there were worse things out here yet.
