History:

Jada hails from Thirat, a sweltering high-gravity jungle world deep in Orion space. It is home to an isolationist, martial Orion culture, one free of rampant crime and piracy, maintain its corporations and noble families, but almost as honour-bound and duelling-obsessed as Klingons.
http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Thirat
She comes from a lesser clan, the Nozama, who dwelt in the jungles themselves. Her mother D'Nush loved her daughter, but her father Gaztak was overbearing and work-obsessed, always pressuring his eldest child to succeed. To get away from the bonds of family, Jada developed a desire to explore, both the jungles around her and to dream of the stars above. Per custom, at age 11, her parents sold her as a slave to a local company owned by the ruling Teish family. This was no abuse, but traditional Orion apprenticeship and education. She was trained to hunt the jungles for valuable products (foodstuffs, plants, drugs, and others), to survive on her own, and to fight. She soon became a skilled hunter and a budding warrior who could defend her clan and company in the occasional skirmishes, and she could move easily between city and the jungle's heart. But she learned not to overreach when a shadow-cat pounced on her from behind; she slew it, by forcing her fist down its throat, and still has souvenirs of its fangs and fur. The company paid to heal the wounds, but not the scars. She worked hard to earn enough to buy her freedom.

However, whereas company conflicts had once been settled by duelling between executives and less elegant brawling between workers, inter-corporate rivalry finally erupted into open warfare in 2390. The different ruling families were backed by external Orion, Ferengi, Klingon, and even Federation business interests. The company and the Nozama were dragged into it. Once a hunter, still a slave, only 16, Jada was now a warrior defending both company property and traditional Nozama lands, protecting her kith and kin from opposing forces and corporate headhunters. But ultimately suffering a hostile takeover, the Nozama were forced to flee. Lest they be seized as property by a rival company, they escaped offworld as refugees, wandering the space-lanes in search of a new place to call home. Eventually, their failing ship drifted into Federation space illegally and they were caught by Starfleet, and given aid and escort. The proud Nozama didn't want charity, just the opportunity to work their way. Some in the Federation objected to taking Orion, especially Thiratin, refugees, fearing they would bring crime, slavery, and suicidal conflict, the perennial fears. Ultimately, however, they were welcomed by Holcomb's World, which had already shown the benefits of having Orion immigrants a century earlier, and allowed to settle there.
http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Holcomb%27s_Planet

Jada soon decided to enlist in Starfleet, following an Orion code of payback, that is, to repay Starfleet and the Federation for accepting her people. She wished to offer her service and herself as a hostage to their good behaviour. This was against her family's wishes, who desired a more peaceful, profitable trade, but Jada was a warrior now, and stars were in her eyes. The Security/Tactical department seemed a natural fit. She successfully completed training, mostly through a stubborn determination not to fail, and is now ready to serve.

Personality:

Jada is proud and has a prickly, aggressive attitude. Owing to Thiratin custom, direct orders or statements of the imperative mood sound like insults to her ears (only used for animals or low slaves), but she accepts what comes through the chain-of-command and acknowledged superiors. As a result she finds most people rather rude; a simple "please" goes a long way. On the other hand, she is unfailingly polite and a stickler for proper protocol. She might challenge those who particularly offend her to a duel, which, not just with weaponry, can take the form of boxing, wrestling, arm-wrestling, athletic contest, or a game according to the scale of the offence. Victory or defeat, this settles the matter, and Jada bears no grudges afterward.

She is more relaxed and open around close friends, lovers, and proven shipmates. At such times, she displays an earthy good humour and a liking for simple pleasures, such as drinks with friends, leading to a joyous party mood and a wild passion. She has laconic speech and a wry humour. She is shy though, slow to let anyone come close. She has a strong urge to help and protect her fellow crew, seeing them as an adopted clan. Per custom, she is utterly loyal to her captain, provided she can respect them.

She follows Thiratin Orion codes of honour (largely of the face-saving nature) and hospitality. By the code of cluros, she tries to never reveal weakness, shame, fear, or failure, and to always keep her cool. However, she is not rigid in her codes, but rather adaptable and pragmatic, accepting what she must to get along with others, and she has a streak of low cunning. She is highly self-reliant and thus unwilling to seek help with any personal problem. Otherwise, she is curious to learn the customs and interests of other races, baffling as they may be. She deeply respects nature and performs hunting rituals to pay homage to animals and plants she takes. Though she swears by (or at) gods, she is not religious.

Skills, Abilities, Hobbies:

As well as being a trained Starfleet security/tactical crewwoman with all necessary skills and combat techniques, Jada is skilled in Orion martial arts, namely the kickboxing tatharoc style and the use of sword, machete, and knives. She combines these and Starfleet unarmed techniques into an effective mixed martial arts style. She does not enjoy violence itself, but rather the physicality and competition of a fight. She approaches her Security work into the mindset of a hunter, always vigilant for a foe, tracking her prey, and finally delivering a swift strike.

She is skilled in the ways of the jungle, such as tracking, survival, climbing trees, use of poison, hunting, collecting plants, and handling dangerous beasts. These skills make her useful in surveys of new worlds and in planet-side operations.

Coming from a harsh, high-gravity world, she is exceptionally strong and hardy with good balance, though she lacks the grace and agility Orion women are known for. She also doesn't dance, unless one counts the deadly grace of her fighting, which she does. Those who expect her to be a typical Orion slave girl are soon sorely disabused, but she's not afraid to use it to her advantage where she can. She is no seductress, but takes the lead in romance when she desires. She has possesses the potent pheromones of an Orion woman and the high sex drive, especially when she's in heat, but tends to burn off her energy in hard training and cold showers. She doesn't feel beautiful beside the leggier, bustier, and more stunning women of her species, but is proud of her fit physique.

She enjoys exercise, training in martial arts, hunting, learning about nature, tattoos, sketching (natural scenes primarily), Earth movies, and Orion warp metal. She has a pet snake, named Snake.

Physical Description:

Jada is a small but powerful woman, only weighing 100 pounds and standing 5 feet tall. She has an athletic build and toned body, with strong thighs and shoulders, good balance and predatory step, and firm and wiry muscles that give great strength, speed, and agility. Her skin is a warm and rich green that hints of the jungle. She has short-cropped black hair, the better not to be pulled in a fight; tigerish dark golden eyes that gleam with intent; and a hard-set jaw. Perhaps not classically beautiful and with a small bust, her exotic green hue and healthy and confident nature demands her to be seen as attractive, in a savage and dangerous way.

She wears the yellow-trimmed uniform of Starfleet Security, snug but not confining about her figure. Off duty, she wears plain, casual clothes, usually loose and suitable for working out in. Owing to the great humidity on her world, she's used to wearing little, even going topless, at least in private or when training or working. For jewellery, she favours a necklace of shadow-cat fangs and owns a shawl of its pelt.

Beneath her clothing, her body is a jungle, adorned all over with black-ink tattoos displaying clan markings, Orion script, stylised maze-like art of beasts and the wild, and a few battle-scars. A poisonous dragon wing-slug spreads its wings across her back, its tail down her spine. On her right shoulder-blade and left midriff are claw marks; beside the former, Orion script reads "Watch your back." Over her left shoulder and chest pounces a hunting cat. A vine creeps around her belly and thighs, bearing beautiful flowers and wickedly jagged sharp thorns. A snake coils up her left leg. On her left upper arm is a curling caterpillar. Down her right forearm, Orion script lists her slave history, followed by the start of her Starfleet service record. On her right upper arm is a recent addition, the Starfleet chevron. She has plans to get another tattoo representing her first posting.

Sample post:

Jada pounced on top of Jake, throwing a leg over him and straddling his hips with her strong green thighs, holding him close and tight. Breathing hard, she flashed him a dangerous smile. 'Heard of the Orion kiss?' Then slammed forward, butting her forehead into his. Stunned, falling back, he thrust his arms up, guarding his head; she switched to a rapid series of blows against his chest and gut. Recovering, blocking her, opening up her guard, Jake delivered a strike up at her chin, forcing her head back, her teeth biting hard into the guard. It hurt, it brought tears to her eyes, both in pain and shame. But, unwilling to show it, Jada made a bitter smile and took it as encouragement. Winning or losing, she enjoyed the contest.

Seizing the opportunity, Jake threw her off. Jada lashed out with a claw-like rake-punch, and caught an elbow in the ribs for her troubles. Snake-like, she twisted around Jake's body, green limbs entangled with brown, as they struggled for lock and counter-lock. Briefly, she had his head between her thighs, and teased 'While you're down there...?' but they had no time for fantasies. The fight itself was exhilarating enough, her every sense alive like fire, her prowess proved.

Finally, Jada caught Jake's arm behind his back, her legs entwined with his, locking him down hard. She waited for him to tap out, but Strov called out. 'Enough!' Jada hissed, annoyed at the interruption; she needed to know who would have won. Nevertheless, both fighters disengaged, Jada helping the larger man to his feet, then they bowed to each other. Jada removed her mouth guard, wiped green blood from her lip. 'Good fight.' Jada murmured to Jake, and he responded breathlessly, grinning 'Yeah.' It was true, they'd both fought well, and Jada was pleased by her performance. But she wasn't yet satisfied.

The Tellarite instructor's nostrils flared as she regarded the two panting Starfleet trainees. 'Hmph. Good enough, I suppose. Phillips, keep your guard up. You're not so pretty she won't mess up your face. Jada: you don't have the reach you think you do in kicks.' she observed with typical Tellarite criticism.

Irritated by the perceived insult and feeling self-conscious about her height, or lack of, Jada straightened, acknowledging curtly 'Yes, Mistress.'

Strov liked to quiz them after a fight, trying to keep their minds in gear even during the adrenaline of combat. 'Who can tell me where Philips missed an opportunity?'

Since he seemed lost for words, Jada answered for him. 'I thought he avoided the chest area... It would've been worthwhile punching me in the boob. It stings.' She looked blandly at an embarrassed Jake, showing her lack of concern for fighting dirty.

'Yes. You have no room for notions of chivalry in a fight between sexes. Don't be polite... Now, Philips, do you think Orion pheromones had an influence?'

Philips thought for a moment. 'If it, ah, boosts adrenaline, then it was probably in my favour?' he suggested. He glanced helplessly at a smirking Jada now. 'But now I feel... compromised.'

Strov snorted at that, and didn't disagree. 'Lieutenant Suvok has come to take you out of my sight.' She waived a Vulcan officer forward; Jada had noted a new arrival in the background during the brawl. Jada stood automatically to attention, wishing she was better presented than sweating like a spine-boar in her sportswear, sporting green and orange bruises amidst her tattoos.

With little preamble Suvok passed them each PADDS. 'Congratulations on completing advanced training. Here are your orders.'

Jada would look later. She bowed. 'I thank you, sir.' Jake meanwhile embarrassed himself in his eagerness to find out his posting.

'I will see you at 0600.' Suvok departed, and Jada sneaked a peak at her orders. Huh.

Strov too was done with them, and shooed them with her hoof-like paws. 'Alright, warm down, massage, and hit the showers. Together or separately, I care not.'

As the Tellarite stalked off, Jada turned on Jake, gazing up, golden eyes gleaming with intent. Her hot blood was pumping, her heart thudding; she was excited for her new posting, and she felt like celebrating. Even after training, there was no reigning in her drives now. Right now, she could let it go. She licked the blood off her lip. 'Together sounds good...' Then she hit him. Time to find out who would have won.

Additional information:

How did you find Shadow Fleet? Frustrated with the typically unreliable Trek games on RPOL, I went looking for options. I found this site advertised at its Offsite Gaming board.

Hmm, I started this yesterday, so my reporting in date is wrong.  ::)

Jada,

What an impressive application!

We have not seen an Orion applicant for a long while.

The greatest need at the moment is in Operations.
But I do have opening in Sec/Tac as well.

We can put you on Starbase Columbus at the starting rank of Crewman.

Please let us know if Ops will work for you, or if Sec/Tac is your desired department.  Note - you can always switch departments later ;-)

Sincerely,

Kirok

Thanks! I'm glad everyone liked it.

I guess Starfleet doesn't trust her with the heavy weaponry yet. Okay, I'm happy to go where Jada's needed or there's an opening for her, as the GMs wish. My first preference is for Sec/Tac, but I can certainly give Ops a go until she has a chance to switch.

However, I'm having a hard time finding out what Starfleet Operations actually does, since the wiki is down right now. Jada doesn't strike me as a technician, but maybe she could work in logistics and cargo. I don't know where planet-side scouting and other activities would come in, but I guess they'd be only an occasional requirement.

Since I gave her a strong natural focus, a third option might be Science, putting Jada to work with alien fauna, flora, and ecological matters. She'd be a rather tough and scrappy lab assistant, but there's no reason for her not to be. Those tribbles can be dangerous, and someone's got to get the mugato into the cage.

Jada,

It isn't that at all ;-)
Just trying to fill a vacancy.

Data & Harry were Operation Officers on their ship.

But, I can put you into a Sec/Tac spot on the Tempest.
She is a fine and fun ship.

Let me know if that will work.

And if you would like to take the Enlisted Training Course now or at later time (it help new player acclimate to our system ;-)

Finally, please let us know which image you want to use.  We will use it in the ID badge for your character.

Kindly,

Kirok

PS - Please let me know if you would like you name to show as Jada.

Operations is always difficult to explain or define because they do everything from running the transporters to keeping the lights on. An example of an Ops Officer is Data in TNG. I'm a Sec/Tac Officer so I'm not exactly the best person to explain Operations but from what I've seen and read they tend to do a bit of everything.

I'd also like to say that I enjoyed reading your app and I'm exited to see an Orion on the site again. We haven't had one of them in quite a while.

EDIT: Oooops it seems Admiral Kirok posted while I was typing

Sure, I can take the Sec/Tac spot on the Tempest, thanks.

I can take the Enlisted Training Course now. I've been looking over the training boards, they seem fun and easy. I had kind of dreaded it would be a quiz or test of some kind, but I can write little vignettes easily.

I'll look at finding or making an image later, if you don't mind. It's hard to find an image of an Orion girl who's not a glamour model.

And expect to see more Orions from me later. :D I love the species, for more than the obvious reasons, and played as many ways against type as I can find.

And yes, please change my name.

Welcome to the Tempest! Finally I get someone else in my Department.

I also noticed that you set your flag to Australia. It's good to see a fellow Aussie on Shadowfleet.

By reporting in, do I have to do anything special, or can I just go say hi at the Tempest board? Which I'll do anyway, of course.
