Perhaps it was his former training as a Search and Rescue specialist or his boxing experience, but Mahak could self-diagnose an injury fairly accurately.

"I appear to have internal bleeding," He said with absolutely zero emotion in his voice. "I would recommend that we contact my parent's at their ranch."

"I concur. Mahak, are you unwell?" Strov asked blandly when he had reached them. He was already groping around in his pack for the comm.

"I need medical attention, uncle," He replied, pain starting to creep into his voice now that the shock had worn away.

Strov tapped on the comm several times and appeared to be having a conversation with someone.

"Kali, are you injured?" Mahak asked, concerned.

She didn't know why, but for some reason she felt a head rush of emotion. Kali let out a very animalistic whine and pulled Mahak hard against her she could nuzzle his jaw and breathe in his scent. The word spoils kept entertaining her thoughts, clouding it. She wasn't injured, far from it. There wasn't even a scratch on her.

Kali tasted a bit of blood when she kissed him full on the mouth. It made her smile. "You'll be alright," she reassured him. "You're strong." Very strong. The combatant lying nearby was an attest to that. She pressed her lips against his dirtied cheek while Strov was on the 'phone' and rewarded Mahak with a little tiny rumble of her chest. She was purring.

Mahak would usually have luxuriated in her attention, but even with his injuries he felt just a bit awkward with Reyes's affection.

So did Strov, too, apparently. The older Vulcan had clomped over to them and awkwardly dropped a hand on Reyes's shoulder.

"T'Vak is on her way, with a transport." Strov said. "I do not believe she would feel comfortable with a human woman clutching her son."

It was the hand on her shoulder that deterred her from rightfully comforting her mate. Kali blinked through the cloudy thoughts and shamefully shuffled back and away. Disapproval. She tried to focus on the poor unconscious sod instead. He stirred a bit when she checked the really nasty bruise on his chin.

It was official. Vulcans were weird. It explained why she was one-fourth of that. The pig-kitty she dropped earlier, Joffery, actually stuck around and nosed around her ankle until she picked it up and played with its nose. It looked like she'll have to get affection from this little bugger for now.

T'Vak's mother was not long in appearing. A dune buggy of sorts, but on two rubber treads, came rumbling down the hill. It came to a precise stop. The hatch opened on the driver's side and a long legged, rangy Vulcan woman stepped out.

Mahak was quite young, only 29, and to someone unused to Vulcans it could appear that T'Vak was his sister. She wore her hair short, but not in the prim style of a Vulcan officer in Starfleet. Hers was rich black, as were the eyes that were just as rimmed with yellow from being outdoors as her brother's, Strov. She wore a pair of tight fitting trousers and boots, a top that was open at the throat with the sleeves rolled up. When she came over to her son she took off her work gloves and put each one it in its corresponding pocket on her jacket.

"Strov." T'Vak said briefly, and dropped to a knee next to her son.

"Mother," Mahak began.

"You are talking, which is good, but logic dictates that you do not waste your strength on it." She replied smoothly. "Brother, let us load him up into the vehicle."

The dune buggy had an impressive cargo area, for hauling around crops or construction materials. Strov and T'Vak loaded the ailing Mahak into it, and he just had to bend his legs a little, but his spine was stable.

"Our medical equipment is at the ranch." T'Vak said. She then turned to Reyes for the first time.

It was evident upon locking eyes with her that she was not as young as her quick movements or easy strength would have one believe. There was a lifetime of experience in her eyes, those that spent so many years looking out over a harsh sun-drenched colony planet that they were discolored. Her face was wrinkled here and there: under the eyes, the jawline, the cheeks. A scar wound it's way from her chin down to the side of her neck, just skirting the jugular, showing how close she'd come to death. Her hands were long fingered and elegant, but constant work had ravaged them, the fingers toughened and the palms callused.

"You must be Chief Reyes," The old Vulcan woman announced with the same deal with it tone that Mahak never failed to use. "My son indicated to me that you were coming. I have been looking forward to meeting you. But perhaps we should save our human style pleasantries for a time after my son is treated."

"Agreed," Kali told her meekly.

There had to be some sort of unwritten rule somewhere against letting your guy's parents find their kid harmed as a first impression, and boy was Mahak's mom an intimidating sight to behold.

They loaded Mahak into the vehicle and Kali didn't want to sit there all useless, so she smartly tapped at S'trel face until he stirred and bleary eyes caught her's.

"Up you get, wonder boy," she said unkindly. "Or we're leaving you behind." Correction - two men were hurt because of her. It wasn't a very good impression she wanted to leave for Mahak's tightly-knitted community.

To his credit, S'trel looked like he was recovering - at least mentally. He didn't make any untoward moves when he let her haul him up for the transport. She ended up miserably beside the Vulcan to avoid making any waves. As Strov had said earlier, she'd rather not press her luck being beside Mahak right now.

Joffery snuffled happily through the ride on her lap.

The dune buggy was a handy vehicle. Its tread made short work of any dips or twists in terrain, and it threw up an awesome cloud of stony dust in its wake. The interior of the vehicle was scarred and a bit dirty from hard use, but the engine purred as sweetly as a newborn kitten.

"She brought a tlanda," Strov ventured once during the ride. "And named it."

"Later," T'Vak said. "My son is hurt."

And that was the end of that.

The ranch appeared below them. There was a prefabricated style modular house, very modest and without art. The facilities for the animals were a bit more primitive: all open air and very clean and well lit, but despite their modern construction materials they looked as if they belonged to a bygone era. There was a barn, a stable, with troughs and more dotted around the landscape. There was very little to see except for open badlands with a few buildings clinging to a hill.

The dune buggy roared down the hill as if it had been born to do so. They arrived at the main house and T'Vak was the first to exit.

"Herd's coming in soon," Strov said. "And if I am going to tend to the injured we'll be a hand short."

"I'll tend to them," T'Vak replied smoothly. "With Chief Reyes's help. Thank you, brother."

S'Trel was able to walk on his own to the house, green blood congealing on his jaw. The other two Vulcans carried Mahak into the house.

The interior of the home was a bit less foreboding than the ranch outside. It even had a quaint, down home decorating touch, but with a Vulcan flair. Of art and knickknacks it had very little, but there was a traditional Vulcan meditation and prayer shrine in the corner, the fanciest item the family owned. Everything else was strictly utilitarian, strictly for efficiency: replicator, dining area, and bathroom, all of it immaculately clean but showing its age. There was a second story to the place where the family apparently slept.

"S'Trel, you will wait." T'Vak said in a tone that brooked no argument.

The medical suppplies, as they were, consisted of a standard issue medkit and a woven cloth bag full of more antiquated instruments. Mahak found himself stretched on on the guest cot, a rack as hard and unforgiving as any he'd slept on in Starfleet.

There were rumblings outside, and Strov stuck his head out of the door. He announced that the herd and the ranch hands were returning and that he'd join them later.

"Chief Reyes, would you kindly assist me?" T'Vak asked, taking instruments out of her frontier style doctor's bag and snapping open the kit.

Kali wasn't sure where to put Joffery when they arrived. It was plenty obvious that she was making things worse by bringing 'vermin' to the household, so she put him back in her hat and let him doze while Mahak was put on a cot.

Nothing in the e-books mentioned what to do at this point. She was going to have to stew in her own grave and wing it. Surprise colored Kali's expression when T'Vak asked her to join her to take care of the injured. "Uh... yeah! Sure, of course!"

She had her tricorder at least. So when she knelt beside the cot, Kali ran the readings. There was internal bleeding for sure, but his vitals were pretty stable so it didn't look like he was in danger of dying. "I'm still not sure what happened," Kali admitted bleakly. "S'trel just went all bonkers."

S'trel hovered dourly nearby and tried to look anywhere but at them. "I was meditating. It was disrupted." He brooked no more quarter than that, but that was probably because he could make little use of his busted up jaw.

"Your scanning device is correct. There is internal bleeding, but the organs are not damaged." T'Vak palmed another instrument and ran its healing reddish light over Mahak's torso.

"I believe the damage is repaired," The old Vulcan woman announced. "However, he should remain off of his feet to rest. Do you require something for the pain, son?"

"Nothing." Mahak said, indomitable hard ass that he was.

"Rest." There was no kiss on the head, no pat of the hand, but great regard in her eyes as she contemplated her son. There was less in them when she turned to S'Trel.

"You have attacked a member of my family in the throes of your pon farr," T'Vak said bluntly. "If you can walk into my house under your own power you can surely walk out of it. Do so now."

Like a beaten dog, the horny Vulcan slunk out.

"Now," T'Vak told Reyes. "You are both probably hungry and thirsty after your ordeal. I could use the replicator if you prefer, but I think it is logical that you should sample the local cuisine while you are visiting."

Eating and drinking didn't sit well with her while Mahak was spread out like that and injured. She'd rather just curl against his side and apologize for pretty much screwing up their first night on his home planet. That, or just drink something heavy in peace.

But there was no way she was gonna say either of those things aloud. "I can eat something," she agreed and set the tricorder down. "Do you mind if I can use the replicator for uh..." Maybe she was overstepping her boundaries when she gestured at Joffrey's disquieting chitter. He was probably hungry too.

"Your beast." T'Vak said.

"Mother--" Mahak began.

"Son." was all she said.

It was curious, the mother completely bulling over the son with a single word. Mahak had never been so cowed. He did not flinch, he merely nodded, accepting that mother knew best.

"I would recommend keeping your beast outside," T'Vak told Reyes in her declarative voice. "Tlanda are not customarily housed indoors. The beast will be happy and healthy if he is allowed fresh air and sunshine in the stable. For now, you can feel free to replicate whatever you like for it."

"Now," The old woman said. "I do not have meat for you, Chief Reyes, but the traditional dish here on Harmony consists of a bean stew with bamba root flavoring. It may not be as elegant as the food on a starship but it is a good meal for us working people."

Kali really couldn't argue with that. It wasn't like she was an expert with tlanda - and as long as Mahak's mom wasn't hiding in the shadows with a shotgun to do a bit of pest cleaning, she visibly relaxed.

"Well, I'm all for trying new things," Kali shrugged at her suggestion. Meat was kind of a treat for her on the ship anyways. A replicator never really got the authentic taste right. "I ate all sorts of vegetarian dishes on New Canton. We didn't dare try eating the livestock there. Too poisonous or too clever."

The relationship between Mahak and his mom was... pretty entertaining. She wanted to rib him a bit for being kind of a mama's boy, but she didn't dare open her mouth in the presence of the Vulcan woman.

"New Canton?" T'Vak asked. She was at the kitchenette, already pulling out ingredients for the meal. First she found an old fashioned and large metal pot for the stew, which she filled with water. In went a great measure of beans and some of the chopped up bamba root that Strov had found on their journey. Soon a rich smell filled the house.

Mahak took in the scent and sights of her preparing the bean stew and was filled with many memories of his childhood. He tried to get up to move and grunted softly in pain. Apparently, he was healed but still tender.

Wincing, Kali pushed Mahak back down. "Easy there, tiger." Her hand lingered, her fingers idly rubbing at his chest, but then she remembered her place and slowly pulled away.

T'Vak's voice drifted out from the kitchen. Kali stiffened at the question. It just slipped out - she didn't mean to mention New Canton at all. "It's uh... just a small colony near Tellarite space. It's not important."

Mahak struggled to sit up just a bit, if only to be included in the conversation.

"I see." T'Vak actually sounded a bit softer, more approving. "You were raised on a colony world. So was I, and so was Mahak. But his father is from Vulcan."

"Where is Avarin, mother?" Mahak asked.

"Your father sent me a message indicating that he was returning from Vulcan soon, but he did not say exactly when." The old woman was spooning up bean stew into matching bowls. "Here you are."

She passed a steaming bowl and spoon to Mahak, and the same to Reyes.

"We work much harder, physically, than most Vulcans do." T'Vak told Reyes, hand still on the bowl, her sun-yellowed black eyes locked with her. "This is our traditional and most filling dish. I do hope you approve."
