Laurent Severbridge was born in a family of intellectualls and was expected to continue his father's line of work as an educator and a scientist. Indeed,  he showed interest in the sciences as a child and even skipped several grades due to his intellectual capability. Due to the frequent grade-skipping, Severbridge has not formed an interest in people or friends,  instead intereacting with only a small group of people.

Severbridge showed an interest in debate during high school,  despite lacking social skills. It was more than compensated by his calmness, knowledge, and incredible reason and as a result won a few local competitions. At this time,  he also caught the attention of Michel Clairbone, his history teacher. He would help shape Severbridge's interest in history. While he mostly excelled at school,  he was mediocre at PE.

Severbridge was torn on whether to study science as his father wished or to study history,  which interested him at that time.  Convinced by his father,  Severbridge learned science in university. However,  his desire for understanding the history of certain cultures had not ended.

After finishing university early,  Severbidge decided to enlist in Starfleet, as to gain experience in the field of science and to satisfy his interest in the history of cultures.

Severbridge was standing in his father's study.  He liked his father's collection of paper books,  and often ventured inside the study to read them.

Amidst the paper books,  Severbridge saw something he had never read before. It was a study on the attitude on long periods of space travel of Starfleet personnel.

Severbridge began to read the study. He began to remember the words of Mr. Clairbone,  his history teacher.

"Where no man has gone before, " he had said.

"Where no man has gone before, students! It seems exploration and curiosity is indeed only human!" said Clairbone sarcastically.

A Starfleet officer had come to tell the students about Starfleet, ending his pitch telling the students that they would go where no man has gone before.

"But the truth is,  Starfleet does go to where no Vulcan has gone before.  To where no Klingon has gone before. To where not a species has gone before! " Clairbone had said.

"That is not to say they think the same. Every species has its differences, and what better way to learn those than history! "

Severbridge smiled.  He thought, what if he was the experiment? He knew the anatomy, history,  and psychology of many different species from his reading, but he did not know those of himself.

That was the moment Severbridge decided to join Starfleet.
