"Quarantine protocols have been engaged.   I think you just entered a contaminated zone.  We're not going to be able to leave until the threat has been cleared" Zex said to Howell.

Then the Deltan looked from Howell to Dr. McConnell.  "Should we sedate Sevoc?  What's the standard Dr. McConnell?" she asked.

...
A bead of sweat trickled down Jamie's forehead, down her cheek where she wiped it off with her shoulder.  A fury swept over her as she glared at the man, then held back the urge to scream as she responded to Dr. Zex.  "Sedate him and run an analysis on his brain function.  I'm sure you have scans of him, use those to compare to his current state so we can see what we're dealing here.  Right now he's our only subject because we can't get Dr. Dano out of there.

...

While his fellow officers started working on sedating him, Sevoc had another delusional fit.

"MURDERERS! ASSASSINS!" he cried out. "DON'T LET THOSE PINK-SKINNED KILLERS NEAR ME!"

He lunged toward Zex in an attempt to wrestle the hypo away. In his delusioned mind, that hypo was a knife that was ready to be plunged into his heart.

The scathing malediction that leaped into his mind would not have been proper for even the meanest dive bar on the Columbus. Stafford breathed slowly and focused. One of his gifts was to remain calm in any situation, no matter how major or minor. He reached for his calm then and found it.

"=/\=Acknowledged, Dan. I can't say I am happy that the three of you are in danger, but while you're there you might as well try to help. Dr. McConnell, Dr. Zex. Have both of your staffs set up two seperate quarantine zones in the infirmary. We might be able to beam you away from ground zero and to relative safety. Keep me appraised. Stafford out.=/\="

[Ops]

"Intentionally?" Stafford asked. "I don't think we know enough to make that assumption, ensign. But in any case, you are correct. Lock down."

As he said it, the commander sighed inwardly. This would be twice in two months that the Columbus would go into an emergency situation. First a murder, now a plague. I thought being posted on a base would be boring.

"Ensign Harmon, you're on the horn already. Divert all incoming traffic and let Starfleet Command know we've got a possible outbreak. Keep it quiet, no need to let the other powers that be in the quadrant that Starfleet once again can't handle their business here on the Columbus." Stafford said briskly.

"And Ensign D'Angelo, go back up the Chief with whatever he needs. Harmon can handle the comms and the lockdown, but your department will be needed elsewhere." The commander said.

[Ops]

"Mr. Hust." Stafford's grip on his cane was turning his knuckles white. "Dr. Dano appears to have broken containment on these pathogens. 'Mechanical failure' is something I would truly like to avoid right now."

"Aye, aye, sir," Alex said. He suspected that his deployment on Columbus would be eventful but he never expected a plague outbreak. He went to work ensuring that all nearby trafic were diverted. He then composed a message to Starfleet Command.

TO: Starfleet Headquarters, San Fransisco
FROM: Ensign Alex Harmon, Operations Officer, Starbase Colombus
SUBJECT: Potential Pathogen Outbreak

Starbase Colombus is under threat of a Pathogen Outbreak. Various Contagions released. Quarantine procedures initiated. Do not approach. Will update as more information become available. I say again, stay away.

Before sending the message to Starfleet Command, Alex composed another message. This one was encrypted much better using Intelligence encryptions. He would use the 'proper' message to Starfleet Command to disguise the message to Intelligence as it travelled Subspace so no one at Starfleet or Columbus would discover the message.

TO: Starfleet Inteligence Sector Command
FROM: Watcher Six
Subject: Potential Biological Attack on Starbase Columbus

Starbase Columbus is currently facing a potential Biological weapons attack. Should it be an intentional attack and not an accident, suspect Doctor Ebroch Dano. Will update with more information when possible.

With the messages sent, Alex went about locking down the station. First, he activated force fields in the Flight Deck and locked down the doors in the flight decks and all other points of exit such as airlocks. He overrode the commands for the doors and set up an authorization code so that only he could open the doors again.

"Commander," Alex said once he had finished everything. "I have sent a message to Starfleet command and I am monitoring traffic and diverting anything that comes close. I have also locked down the Flight Deck and all other potential points of exit."

Jamie stared at her boss across the space of glass and force fields and could see that he was not himself.  According to the vault all the pathogens were still secured in their viles so why the Betazoid man was acting this way would need further investigation.  She would need to give him an exam, but at the moment he was in a place where that was not about to happen and until she realized what was going on, there was no way she was getting anywhere near him.
"They're gone, my dear."  Dr. Dano responded and waved at her with his fingers, tapping them one at a time against the glass.  "I killed them, Jamie...but I don't know why."  He shrugged then smiled, "Now, if you'd be a good girl and give me full control of the vault.  Go on then, I'm giving you an order, child."  His face began to turn red in anger, "I'm ordering you, McConnell!! Give me full control of the damn vault or this will go on your record!  What will they say....what would you family say....what would you hu..."
Jamie cut him off as the man began stomping and banging against the glass.  Suddenly, the Andorian began to act paranoid and what she could guess was not his normal self.

She frowned and bent down close to him.  Her eyes quickly surmised that, like her, he wasn't completely Andorian and the shape of the ears made him perhaps half Vulcan?  Jamie didn't really have time to guess what was going on.  Before she could do anything about the science officer's symptoms the sound of a  transporter filled the room and a human man appeared.  This was insane and Jamie did not know how he overid the containment quarantines that would usually prevent transportation in or out of the contaminated areas.

"As for you."  Jamie stood to her full height and pointed a finger at the so called XO.  "I don't care if you are the president of the Federation, for you to just transport yourself in a contained area without regards to your life is completely.....idiotic!"  Her Vulcan side kept her from trembling with anger at this obvious breach of containment.  "As Dr. Zex said, you cannot leave here, and you would have been more help on the outside than stuck here with us!  There is nothing wrong with the containment Vault or the force fields!  We do not need an engineer at the moment so until we do, stay out of our way......sir."  The last part came out almost as a growl as she turned to her two technicians.

The two men were going over the vials and confirmed that there was no breach.  In fact all of the viruses seemed to be dormant and in stasis.

=^= There will be no beaming of any individual in the containment zones, Commander! =^=

Jamie responded quickly before anyone else was beamed in or out.
=^= Sir, there is no containment breach and we're still investigating what has happened to Dr. Dano but he's not the only one that has been affected.  Science officer Sevoc seems to be showing some symptoms.  In the meantime, please take away any of Dr. Dano's access...I don't have authority to do so, all I can do is hold him off for now.  His access is higher than mine....if he puts in any of his codes he can release all the viruses in the vault.  Do you understand, sir?  Please take away all of Dr. Dano's access codes. =^=
Before she could stop speaking there was a familiar sounding klaxon, a smaller one that came directly from the Vault.  "Dr. McConnell!"  One of her technicians cried out, "It's Dr. Dano, he's managed to release several viruses."
Jamie sucked in some breath as she began to tremble slightly, she wasn't feeling very well either but wasn't about to say anything.  "Which ones?  Quickly!"
The Technician swallowed hard as his eyes read the scrolled information.  Jamie quickly joined him and read for herself.  She swallowed hard and tapped her intercom.
=^= Commander, I hope you've stopped Dr. Dano's from further access but I have bad news.   He's managed to release a few viruses.  I'm sending them to you, with your medical background you know what they are.  These are mutated strains and we're already working on the cures, but there are some that may not get them on time.  In the meantime, sir, this whole station is now quarantine.  They may or may not have spread but we can't take chances =^=
With that Jamie nodded at the technicians who quickly began to formulate the vaccines using the Columbus' own stores.  "Dr. Zex, I'll need you to coordinate with the Columbus medical staff to start working on these.  The faster the better and we need to figure out a way to spread this out...I have a feeling we won't be able to inject everyone individually."
She then turned to the engineer, the XO she had just yelled at, "Mr. Howell, you will be needed now....we will need to get that vault out of there and into the incinerator without releasing any more pathogens and we will need to figure out how to inoculate the entire population of the Columbus, the faster the better...."  Her green eyes flickered with a light of madness or perhaps a little terror, "....any questions?"

[Medical Bay - BioHazard cleared lab room]

"He's insane" Zex said.  "He either intended to release those pathogens on the station all along or has been possessed or something.  Don't listen to him Dr. McConnell" the Deltan encouraged.

Then she offered the woman a nod.  Sevoc was acting oddly.  Scary in fact and it was putting the otherwise anxious Deltan on edge.

"It get that that as soon as I've been able to sedate our friend here" Zex replied.  She went to a nearby cabinet and loaded a hypospray.  Hopefully the man would allow her to administer it.

"Sevoc, calm down.  I'm Zex.  You know me.  Give me your arm please" the Delta said as she slowly approached the man.

Quote from: Hust Kinun on November 08, 2016, 02:35:52 AM

[Ops]

"Aye sir." he said, taking over one of the secondary consoles before a new batch of alarms sounded- full base quarantine. The pulsing red lights were now met with a piercing medical blue, with an automated voice informing them a full base quarantine and lockdown was now in place. As such, the transporter, ventilation, and airlocks shut off, cutting off the station from the outside world, and automated "stay away" beacons came online.

Other than that, Hust was trying to focus. He was unable to figure out what went wrong- at the first sign of trouble on his console, when the XO ordered a site to site and the force fields raised, everything should have locked down, but instead they had had a quarantine incident. And by incident, it was more like a containment breach. The federation used a 7-point scale, analogous to the International Nuclear Event Scale of old Earth.

"Sir..." he said, looking around. "We're facing a possible INES-7 disaster here... we need orders." he said, trying to keep himself focused.

He looked over the transporter logs and frowned. For some reason, the transporter systems had stayed online after the state of emergency in the quarantine chamber had remained online. His temper flared. Engineering obviously hadn't been doing their jobs. He slammed his fist into the control panel beneath him, almost shattering it as a spiderweb lattice of cracks formed, spreading out and causing the display beneath him to buzz and almost fade out. "Engineering needs to get their ACT TOGETHER" He exclaimed, obviously agitated and flustered, manually disabling the transporters- just in case anything else wasn't working right with the shutdown.

After this outburst, something in the back of his mind... clicked. A little tiny voice telling him something was wrong... but then a louder voice screamed it out. This pattern continued, each time everything getting louder and louder. Unbeknownst to anyone, a pathogen of some kind had escaped and already propagated around the station- and Hust had fallen prey to it. He started shaking, as if in anger, and he looked up around, bloodlust in his eyes. His anger was enough to rival that of a Klingon warrior. The reasonable part of him looked up and he tried to lock eyes with the Commander. He spoke, his voice vulnerable like a small child, weak and fearful. "Sir... I am afraid I must be relieved of duty..." he said, before the redness in his eyes returned and he smashed the console again, it fully shattering the console as he went into a bezerk rage throwing anything in sight and then storming off the ops deck and quickly getting lost in the midst of the station's civilian populous, ditching his commbadge. He was almost impossible to track now.

[Ops]

"God..." The commander muttered. The young, trim ensign had moved a great deal faster than Stafford could have, even in his prime. No one in Ops had had any time to react to the sudden departure.

"=/\=Chief Tritter, Ensign Hust is sick. He threw away his commbadge. He's somewhere on the promenade. Find him before he hurts someone or himself.=/\=" Stafford said. "=/\=I'll see what help I can give you up here. Use as many officers as you have to.=/\="

Tritter nodded slightly to D'Angelo, before he replied with "Good. Phasers may not stop the Pathogens, but they will stop people from coming in or going out, thats what is more important. Containment is key with something like this." He than noticed a few more of the Security Team arrive, the man would direct them where to go and what the objective would be. He would than look back towards D'Angelo and state "I wager we should make sure the lock down is proceeding smoothly, hopefully better than last time" He knew last time, it nearly resulted in riots and he wanted to make sure that such would not happen again.

Jane nodded, it was good thinking as unrest could become a major problem if not handled properly.

"Should we get a team or two down to the promenade then Sir? To assure the Civvies that everything is being handled and they they should not panic?" She asked.

The field would be down for about .2 seconds. Is that to much?"

With that order, Jamie took a deep breath, fixed a strand of raven black hair behind a tapered ear and took a moment to think about their situation.  She watched with interest as the Deltan dealt with the Andorian hybrid and watched as the man knocked himself out as he ran against a door that did not open for him.  It would have been funny if the situation wasn't so dire.  She winced and almost did not hear what the engineer, Howell, was saying to her.

He replied "It may have been idiotic, but I have a duty to everyone on this station and I really don't care if that means staring danger in the face." Her eyes moved over to him and tried hard to understand what the man was saying.  It usually was not difficult to do so but for some reason Jamie had to concentrate really hard.  She was still sweating but after running his words through her head a few times she got the idea of what he had just suggested.

"That's perfect, Mr. Howell...that's just enough time to get the ones in the vault to the disintegrator, as for the ones that have been released, my team and the Columbus staff will have to deal with them."  She nodded at him, "Please set that up immediately, we need to get that vault away from Dano as soon as possible.  If he does pass out, that's fine..."  She took a deep sigh, "...I have a feeling he's way past the point of being able to cure him, so at least we can keep him from causing further harm.  Let's keep him unconscious, his mind is strong even if his body is stuck behind the force fields."
Her attention was taken by Zex's suggestion and she listened carefully to it and pursed her lips in thought.

But she watched closely for an opening of any type.  Luckily the man knocked himself out.  So she shrugged and pocketed the hypospray.
The Deltan walked cautiously over to Sevoc and then leaned down to make sure he was still breathing.  "Could we beam the released virus into space?  If we mixed it with something, we might be able to give it some mass" she suggested after she noted the rise and fall in Sevoc chest and not obvious bleeding from the man's head.

"No, we can't."  She responded to the other woman's suggestion.  "A virus can remain in stasis in space, and if it breaks against an asteroid, or hits a ship or worse, travels to some unsuspecting M-Class planet, it'll murder the population and we'd be responsible for it.  Space is not an option, we have to completely destroy the viruses."

She leaned over and ran a medical tricorder over the injured Science Officer.  "He's given himself a concussion.  Keep him sedated and keep running scans on his brain activity."  She ordered and motioned for one of the technicians to help the Deltan with Sevoc.  "Also keep him restrained if you can.  Look around the lab, perhaps there's something we can use."
So Howell and Zex had something to do, leaving Jamie to deal with the problem of the vaccines and keeping track of the infected.  She moved over to the control panel and called up the station's schematics, then called Commander Stafford.
=^= Sir, may I suggest that all unneeded personnel go to their personal quarters, and that all civilians either go to their assigned quarters or to their ships.  We can't allow any of those ships to leave.  The Curie can help make sure there are no runners and I am positive that the Eisenhower and the LeBlanc will too.  As horrible as it sounds, sir, they will have to disable and ship that tries to escape...we cannot allow any infected to slip through our fingers and spread the infection. =^=
She sighed and continued...
=^= In the meantime, sir, Mr. Howell is working on how to remove the Vault from the secure area and into the incinerator.  The vaccines have been formulated and we started sending them to the medical staff in order for them to start reproducing them.  Which leads me to my next concern, sir....how do we inoculate the population of the Columbus? =^=

The events took place so fast that no one in Operations had any chance to respond.

"=/\=Computer, restict mission specialist access codes for Dr. Dano, authoeization Commander Luke Stafford, alpha, oscar, hotel.=/\="

It was too little, too late. The base was already contaminated.

"=/\=All medical staff report to duty stations and prepare quarantine procedures.=/\=" A rapid tap of the commbadge. "=/\=Zex and McConnell, do what you can down there. Stafford out."

[Ops]

"Good work, Harmon." The new Operations officer was proving to be on point. "Re-calibrate the internal sensors and scan for Ensign Hust's bio-signs."

"Already on it, sir," Alex responded. He recalibrated the sensors so he had a clear reading of bio-signs. Be began trying to isolate Hust's bio-sign. He frowned in contemplation as his sensors picked up an unusual bio-sign that bore some  similarities to human but wasn't quite human. "I'm picking up some unusual readings, sir...I've found bio-signs that look like they could be Hust but...well I can't explain it. The signs aren't human. It could be a glitch...or perhaps the virus is affecting our sensors or worse, Hust."

Her eyes moved over to him and tried hard to understand what the man was saying.

"You.  You want me to tie him up?" Zex asked pointedly.  "I know he was acting strangely, but he's unconscious" she added in an effort to get an explanation.

But her thought we more focused on protecting herself and the Starbase for exposure to the virus and dropping the shields even for a millisecond sounded dangerous too her.  "I don't mean to second guess.  But are we sure that is the best option?  Could we not simply drop the temperature in the room to make the virus dormant?" she suggested.

"Keep trying to lock on, ensign." The reason why the sensors could not identify Hust as Betazoid were not as important as locating him. For now, anyway.

[Promenade]

There was a general quarters alarm, but the sickness had spread too quickly. There was no way that even a starbase's facilities could be secured quickly enough to prevent an infection of 50,000 inhabitents.

Crowds were grudgingly responding to the red alerts and to the roving security squads when all hell broke loose.

Screams and panic broke out on the Promenade, the most densely populated area of the Base. The crowd of sentients shuffling to their homes was reduced to a trampling mob in seconds when a handful of infected erupted in violence.

A chubby Tellarite barely had time to grapple with a blood crazed Betazoid, her face speckled with enormous sores.

The porcine alien was able to hold off his attacker when he was taken behind by another. Once he fell, a crowd of bloodthirsty figures surrounded him, savagely biting and ripping into the squealing form.

A humanoid alien was able to crawl on top of a shop, and spent a few frantic minutes kicking off the increasing number of climbing infected that tried to make their way up the shop front. But he could only move so fast for so long, and he was eventually overcome, knocked headlong off of the shop's roof and devoured below.

Jamie frowned at the Deltan and quickly responded, "I want you to restrain him and yes he's unconscious now, but we don't know how long he'll remain that way and what he'll do once awake.  I don't know about you, doctor, but I don't want to deal with a paranoid Andorian hybrid.  Do you?"

She raked fingers through her hair in frustration at having all her orders second guessed, especially when there really wasn't any time to explain everything.  "We are only transporting the viruses in the vault which are secure, and it's too late for the ones that have been released, don't you think?  And we can't just drop the temperature, we'd need to get that room in vacuum, which will kill whoever is still alive in there.  Although Dr. Dano said he killed the others, I am reading lifesigns from two of the technicians.  What you're asking would kill not only Dr. Dano but those two other technicians.  Do you want to do that?"
Jamie turned to Howell, "Please get rid of that vault, Mr. Howell....before more of those viruses are released!"

She responded to the Commander,

=^= Hypospray is not an option, Commander, in the best of times that would take days, perhaps weeks, in this situation we couldn't manage in months.  We need to hit them all at once...perhaps through the ventilation systems?  We can basically gas everyone..the effects should be immediate as well since it's going straight through the lungs and into the bloodstream.  Can that be done? =^=
Jamie knuckled her forehead and then crossed her arms to hide hands that were starting to shake.  She was feeling incredibly unsure, frustrated and angrier by the moment.   Whatever had affected the Andorian's Vulcan side seemed to be affecting her but she wasn't experiencing those type of symptoms.  It was baffling to try to figure out what was going on.  It would take scientists and doctors a long time to figure this out, but they did not have hours, let alone days.
She shut her eyes and thought of Cayden, wondering what he'd think of all this.  He thought she would be safe away from starships and doing boring lab work.  He was wrong.  "Ah, sweetness..."  She muttered, "...I definitely don't want to leave you now...not know...please not now.."
