"Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying." - Arthur C. Clark
It would seem that the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute is currently investigating what may be a Kardashev Type II civilization. On May 15th, 2015 a mysterious signal from the solar system orbiting the star HD 164595 was discovered by the RATAN-600 Radio Telescope operated by the Russian Academy of Science. HD 164595, while about a billion years older, is very similar in properties to our own sun. Although this remained a secret from the international eye until August 27th, 2016 when Paul Gilster broke the story. After working out the strength of the signal the researchers have been able to say that it originates from an Isotropic beacon. Assuming that the signal was not directly aimed at our solar system and was more widespread the beacon would have to have a power source built by a Kardashev Type II Civilization. (If it was aimed at our solar system the beacon could have a power source built by a Kardashev Type I Civilization like our own.) At the moment only one, Neptune-like planet is known to be orbiting HD 164595, it is possible there are others that have yet to be discovered.

I have read all of this and it's certainly exciting. However, all of the follow up research done since the signal has turned up nothing. Yet another tantalizing indication of extraterrestrial life.

...but still, how could a signal like this come from a planet?!

So, looks like there's already a resolution to this story. Turns out the signal was in fact terrestrial in origin.

Of course it's terrestrial.

The disgusting little planet is putting out so much noise and crap that all intelligent life is showing its intelligence by avoiding us.
