The Lounge [Open]
« on: April 06, 2017, 11:54:43 PM »
Welcome to the Lounge! The Lounge is a large room, located on deck 8, starboard. It has a very relaxed and congenial air about it; the Lounge is the only place on the ship where rank means nothing - "sir" need not be uttered when a person of lower rank addresses an officer, and everyone is on an equal footing. Everyone, that is, except for the Lounge Manager and Lounge Staff. Opinions can be voiced in complete safety. This lounge is the social center of the ship. As of this point, the Lounge on the Challenger does not have a name, but the arch on the door outside in worn paint still reads "Starbound". This will be a persistent holodeck thread that can take place alongside missions as appropriate, or just as a nebulous "sometime".

The events that take place are non-canon, however if referenced in one of the mission threads the event, if not the exact dialogue and like, can be considered with some form of canon.

[Lounge]

Dylan sat back in his Civilian clothes, in the rear of the Lounge. Today was a good day- He was off duty, he was out of uniform, and he was in the one place on the ship that people would publicly not call him Sir. That, and he had a deck of cards and some replicated small ceramic cookie-like things. These were, however, not meant for eating. No indeed, it was Poker. An unfortunately fun game he'd found himself introduced to in Starfleet Academy, playing off and on on the way to his first posting and beyond. He flipped the chips around a little as he sat back with some replicated Talaxian Firenut Coffee, one of the hallmark beverages brought back from the Delta quadrant by Voyager.

The drink was potent: About twenty-five to fifty percent more caffeine than regular human Coffee. If one didn't want to sleep, this was your beverage. Dylan didn't know if the caffeine addict called the Captain had found the drink, but he wouldn't put it past Will. Dylan himself had only just stumbled across the drink, quite by accident. Dylan sat back as he watched the room from the corner, looking also past the room out at the wall of windows that showed the ship at warp. He didn't know if anyone would be around- but right now Dylan was more than happy to socialize.

[Lounge]

Jettis had stepped into the lounge, not entirely sure what he had expected. It wasn't the Discovery, he didn't see the friendly face of Kali already sitting at the bar, demanding another drink from the bartender. Nor was he coming to meet Kinley to chat while they were both off duty. In fact, all of the faces were unfamiliar, save for a couple he had informally met in passing.

Gripping the handle of his mug, he sipped at his tea absently. He had just gotten off shift, and as such had made the switch from coffee to calming tea, in the hopes of somewhat reversing the effects the three cups of black coffee had inflicted. It was a fruitless endeavor, but he didn't have much better to do anyhow.

Doing another scan of the room, his eyes finally landed on a semi-familiar face - one of the XO, toying with what appeared to be poker chips. Moving over towards him, he offered a mute smile and a nod as he met his eyes. "Looking for company, or planning on playing poker for one?" He inquired curiously, choosing to ask before taking the seat beside him.

A little darkness went into Dylan's vision as an approaching figure blocked one of the lights. He looked up, fully expecting one of the people who worked the lounge, but he didn't expect another officer- even with ranks dropped a lot of people weren't exactly interested in buddying up to the XO. It was a welcome surprise. "Mr Jyur!" he said, smiling up at the man as he set down his mug and stood. "Welcome to the Lounge."

He smiled at the man's comment. "Well for some reason even out of uniform Crewmen don't come talk to me, so I was just kind of sitting. But if you play, the more the merrier." he said. The man already had a drink, so that took care of that problem. The smell from Dylan's mug gave the area a more charged feeling, but it was great in Dylan's opinion.

When Jettis sat down, Dylan did likewise. He shuffled the cards. "Unless there's anyone else... what's the game?" he asked, indicating the chips. "Feel free to divide however you want." he said, as he shuffled and mixed up the cards into a random order, or at least if there was an order Dylan wasn't aware of it. He lay the deck down to be cut, and waited for the response.

He offered Dylan a grin, tilting his head slightly. "Thank you, sir." He replied, purely out of habit.
Smirking at Dylan's predicament of no officer wanting to approach him, he couldn't imagine why. Of everyone he had met on the ship so far, Dylan seemed to be the least intimidating, XO or not. His enthusiasm was infectious, and far from the usual stuffiness that radiated off of Officers on duty. "Well, younger officers are typical intimidated by the big honchos in charge. I don't blame them," he commented, taking a sip of his drink.

"Ever played Billabong?" He queried cutting the deck and waiting for a response, before he started dealing the cards. "'s pretty similar to Texas Hold 'Em," he tacked on to the end of his sentence.

Dylan raised a finger in warning as Jettis spoke. "Watch that 'S' word. You know better here." he said, a friendly and open grin on his face. "Don't want you to be kicked out of here on your first time." he said, as he relaxed a bit.

"Younger officers? Are you calling me old?" He asked with an air of mock hurt, before a concessional tone took over and admitted, "Aye, I don't blame them either. Now let me tell you... Captain Lafayette was my last CO. Man she could make your head spin with paperwork for a week." he said, shaking his head. "She was a great Captain though. Quite the act to live up to," he said, as the man sat down too.

"Can't say I have, no." he started, before hearing the qualifier. "Well sure. Let's go for it. What do I have to lose but my pride." He said, as he handed the cards over. "Thankfully we're not playing for stakes either, so I think I'll be ok." he said, as he took another sip and leaned in to focus on the game.

Jettis chuckled at Dylan's description of his last Captain. "Well then I'm lucky I got a pretty relaxed Captain and relaxed crew. First assignment was with a Vulcan, but half-Vulcan at that, not as unrelentingly formal." Smirking, he took the deck, quickly running over the rules in his mind, before running them down for Dylan. "Highest up-card starts betting, four hole cards, three community cards on the first round, add one the next, five in total.  Gotta use three or four cards of your own for the showdown."

Beginning dealing, he then set the deck beside him, glancing at his up-card. Eight of hearts, not too bad. Looking over, he glanced to see if Dylan's was higher or lower, to determine who would start the betting.

OOC: Hope you don't mind me jumping in here. Caelene's not really a poker/cards type of person and actually tends to be more of a loner (less so now with the previous host's influence), but if people want to jump in and attempt to interact with her, feel free.

ON:

[Corridor outside the lounge]

Caelene approached the doors to the lounge slowly, as if her feet were encased in cement. Her heart was racing and she desperately wanted to turn around and retreat back to her quarters. What was she doing going to the lounge? It wasn't her - she should be curled up in her quarters with a nice meal and a peaceful atmosphere.

Unfortunately it had been suggested to her that she should "get out more". The Trill could feel the desire from the previous host pulsing through her - the desire to be around others and have fun. It was far from Caelene's natural inclination.

Still, she was already here and she had promised the last counselor she spoke with that she would try to be more sociable and try more of the things Milara had enjoyed.

Taking a deep breath, Caelene stepped forward and walked in. The lounge was fairly busy, but not completely packed with people - much to her relief. Now the next question...should she sit at the bar or find a table? The Trill spotted a small empty table near one of the viewports and made her way over.

She oriented herself so she could view the room overall if she wished or could simply stare out into space. Caelene nervously clasped her hands in her lap, one index finger tapping the back of her other hand.

"Can I get anything for you?" A woman's voice asked from just over her shoulder.

Surprised, Caelene turned to find a waitress coming up behind her. "I...um... Do you have any lida juice?"

The dark-haired woman smiled and nodded. "Of course, I'll be right back."

Caelene nodded and watched the woman wander off to get her beverage. It wasn't going too badly thus far... Her eyes moved slowly about the room, taking in the scene. Some people were in uniform, others weren't. Caelene had come out of uniform - wearing black slacks and a turquoise top; her hair was loose around her shoulders.

She noticed most people were simply talking or eating, but two people seemed to be playing some kind of card game. Caelene hadn't particularly gotten into card games -  preferring to watch instead of actually play.

A few minutes later, the waitress returned and set her beverage on the table.

Caelene smiled and nodded quietly in appreciation. Slowly she reached for the glass and took a tentative sip. It wasn't as good as fresh lida juice, but it was the closest she would get here.

Corridor Outside The Lounge

Lizzie, having decided that she needed a break after the last few days, was heading to the Lounge to see if she could meet with some of those Officers and crew that she had not yet had a chance to say hi to. She had decided to dress up a bit, so was wearing a maroon dress, one of her favourites and black heels.

She entered into the Lounge and looked around her. Spying two Officers she knew having a game of cards, she decided to avoid them. The last time she had played cards, she had been accused of card counting. So as cards tended to bore her anyway she decided to steer clear. She headed to the bar.

"Long Island Iced Tea please." She asked the Barman.

"Coming right up Doctor." The Barman replied.

A few minutes later, he handed Lizzie her drink.

Taking a sip through the straw, she took another look around. Over by one of the windows she saw the engineer that she had met briefly during the last mission, sitting rather uncomfotably at a table on her own. Not having had a chance to speak to her properly then, she decided to take the chance now. Picking up her drink, she headed over to her.

"Excuse me! Ms Tam isn't it? Hi, I'm Lizzie Vaughan. We met briefly when you helped me get into Sickbay a couple of days ago! Do you mind if I join you?" She asked. Not wanting to intrude if she was waiting for someone.

[Lounge]

Caelene was glad she had ordered the drink. It gave her something to do other than simply sit a table and watch others, while also keeping her hands occupied. The Trill took a few deep breaths, trying to keep herself calm. Her little visit to the lounge was going just fine. No need to be anxious.

Part of her wondered if she should've sat closer to...someone. She could've either been learning more about them or seem involved in what was happening - like the card game. Then she could've simply sat silently while she watched and listened.

Caelene had already chosen her table though. And there were still several open tables, so most likely she would have this one to herself. She could nearly hear Milara telling her that she needed to put herself out there more. Caelene sighed quietly, knowing that the previous host was right - at least a little.

Caelene looked up in surprise as the doctor she'd met previously appeared at her table. Admittedly she was a little surprised that someone would bother to speak with her, but perhaps it was because she was new. And alone.

Remembering that the doctor - Lizzie - had addressed her, she said, "Yes, doctor; I'm Caelene Tam. Feel free to join me if you'd like." The Trill offered the woman a slightly uneasy smile and took another sip of her drink.

She nearly added a comment about how she wasn't likely to be very good company, but Milara's instincts had stopped her. Caelene knew she should try to be more sociable...it was just that she was usually so awkward. Milara had never had that problem. In truth, Caelene did alright once she got to know people or around colleagues who were working professionally together. Being on a new ship, though, meant she had to start from scratch.

Lizzie smiled brightly and accepted Caelenes' offer to sit.

"Thank you. Well now that we're not in EVA suit's, Pleased to meet you!" She said, holding out her hand.

She was curious about Tam as she had little experience, medically speaking, with Trills. Especially with joined ones. In fact she had only ever met a joined Trill once and that was years earlier.

[Lounge]

Caelene took another sip of her lida juice as she quietly watched the doctor, waiting for her response. As Lizzie sat, she put her drink back down and placed her hands in her lap. Feeling fidgety, she brushed a stray strand of blonde hair behind her ear idly, letting her fingertips run down the strand slowly.

Seeing Lizzie's outstretched hand, Caelene quickly brought her hand back up to shake it. She did her best to smile, albeit a bit awkwardly, "Nice to meet you too, doctor."

As the doctor took her seat, the Trill struggled to come up with some kind of conversation starter. Even with Melira's experience, she was struggling to come up with some kind of small talk.

It seemed like the doctor was almost studying her, but then again her perceptions of other people weren't always on point. Perhaps the doctor wasn't good with small talk either? Lizzie certainly seemed rather friendly and outgoing, but maybe Caelene was wrong.

Her dark eyes glanced around, trying to find something to talk about. Eventually she spotted the doctor's drink. Looking back up at Lizzie, Caelene asked, "What did you find to drink?"

Lizzie smiled as Caelene shook her hand.

"I'm drinking Long Island Iced Tea!" She replied. "It's an very alcoholic Earth drink that can trace it's origins to 1930's New York. That's in America on Earth in case you didn't know." She continued.

She then realised that she was staring at the Trill opposite. She immediately tried not to.

"I'm sorry for staring, I hope I'm not making you uncomfortable. It's just you are only the 2nd joined Trill I've knowingly met. The only other one was during a MSF posting to Xantex III. There was a joined Trill working there as part of the relief effort called Libuh Lon. Do you know her?" Lizzie asked, trying not appear too curious.

Shaking her head, the Trill replied, "Not to worry, doctor." To be honest, until she got more used to her crewmates, just about anyone could make her uncomfortable. Mostly Caelene needed time to adjust.

It wasn't overly surprising that Lizzie hadn't met many Joined Trills. There really wasn't an overabundance of them, after all. A limited number of symbionts were available, which was why the selection process was so selective. "I'm afraid I don't know her. I actually only became Joined recently; it's a new experience...one I'm still adjusting to."

New and a surprise. After being rejected by the Symbiosis Commission, Caelene hadn't put another thought to the idea of being Joined. A freak accident was the only reason she had received a symbiont. And now it was as if she were a new person - or at least was becoming one.

Lizzie smiled back at Caelene.

"Well I enjoy it. It's got too much alcohol in it for some tastes. It's made of a mixture of 5 different spirits with cola added to make it look like a genuine iced tea." She replied to the first question before pausing and thinking.

"I suppose it was a long shot that you knew her. It's got to be nearly 15 years since I met her. For I know the symbiot has changed hosts since. How long have you been joined?" She asked, trying not to be too nosy.

Caelene nodded, indicating she was listening to the doctor. She'd never tried a Long Island Iced Tea herself. Honestly, it didn't sound all that appealing to her. Lizzie seemed to enjoy it well enough, which was the important thing since she was drinking it. She offered her table-mate a smile and took another sip of her beverage.

"I suppose it was a long shot that you knew her. It's got to be nearly 15 years since I met her. For I know the symbiot has changed hosts since. How long have you been joined?" She asked, trying not to be too nosy.

Fifteen years ago Caelene had only been nine years old. Of course, she had met some Joined Trills during her childhood, but either the host or the symbiont mentioned by Lizzie could be dead or in a different host, respectively. Regardless, she didn't recognize the name of either the host or symbiont offhand.

"Actually, doctor, I Joined with the Tam symbiont a couple weeks prior to coming aboard the Challenger. It was...unexpected and obviously rather new to me. I was scheduled to rendezvous with this ship around that time, but the Joining delayed it slightly," Caelene explained.

The Trill could have used more time off to try to adjust to incorporating another personality with her own. Maybe even a couple months so she could have travelled back to Trill to take part in a zhianítara, but duty called. Instead, she was doing the best she could. It wasn't easy for her.

Dylan looked at his cards after he was dealt them. "OK, let's see how much money you can rake me out of." he said, grinning as he tried to place all the rules. He realized much too late that he had forgotten most of the rules and skills for a game. Either that, or he just had crappy cards. Two of diamonds showing as his up-card. It would appear that Jettis had the advantage. "My training cruise, that was an adventure. Got assigned to a Sovereign class ship, almost got my Captain killed my first mission." he said, as he sat back. "I guess the betting starts with you."

He looked over the board. There weren't enough cards out there to see how bad he was doing overall, but his gut told him this would not be his lucky night. Thankfully, nobody was playing for real money now. He looked over and saw a few more arrivals, Ms. Tam and Ms. Vaughan. He nodded in their direction, but didn't make any overt attempts to talk to them. Right now he focused on the card game.

Lizzie listened to Tam's response and raised her eyebrows at the word Unexpected. As far as she knew, there would be only one reason for an unexpected joining. And that was the unexpected death or terminal injury of the previous host. That didn't quite fit either, as even in that case she would have been told that she was next on the list to receive a symbiot. So while she may have been caught by surprise with the timing, it certainly wouldn't have been unexpected in the traditional sense. It sounded more like she had not been expecting to receive a symbiot at all but circumstances had given no choice. She had heard about situations like this, where a Trill host was either killed or seriously injured with no chance of recovery and they were too far from the Trill home-world for a selected replacement host to arrive in time. In such cases, the nearest Trill would be asked to take on the responsibility in order to keep the symbiot alive. Lizzie wondered if that was the case, maybe she was even a washout from host selection, a gruelling process that many aspired to, but few achieved. She decided to stop her musing as it was a personal matter and none of her business. She smiled brightly at Tam.

"Please, call me Lizzie." She said, pausing before continuing. "I'm only Doctor when I'm on duty and also please never use my rank to address me unless there is no alternative. In sickbay, rank has no place. The person in charge is the senior Doctor, no matter their rank. In medical matters a CMO who is a Lieutenant can overrule a Captain or even an Admiral should the situation call for it." She finished.
